Abstract:
A service organization differs from a manufacturing industry in several ways. Most importantly, the sale, production, and consumption take place almost simultaneously. Over 90 per cent of relevant activities is beyond the immediate influence of management. Effective human resources management becomes the key to building excellence in service organizations. Based on his experience with the Taj Group of Hotels, Mahesh identifies eight human resources management factors as crucial for any organization striving for service excellence.

Abstract:
The successful assimilation of group decision support systems (GDSS) in the Command, Control, Communications, Computers, and Intelligence (C4I) systems of military organizations is critical for making fast and accurate modern military operations decisions. This study empirically examines factors affecting military group decision support systems’ (MGDSS) assimilation and the mediating effect of structural appropriation in the Korean Army in a technology-organization-environment (TOE) framework. Two hundred and forty-eight users or former users of the Army Tactical Command Information System (ATCIS) participated in the survey and a partial least squares (PLS) analysis was used to analyze the data. The results found that institutional pressure (IP) has the strongest effect on structural appropriation, followed by IT infrastructure (ITI) and top management support (TMS). Structural appropriation plays a significant mediating part between the TOE factors and MGDSS assimilation. The results provide implications and contribute valuable insights for military organizations’ successful assimilation of MGDSS.

The gender† dimension of science and technology has become one of the most important and debated issues worldwide, impacting society at every level. A variety of international initiatives on the subject have been undertaken, including the continued monitoring of the status of women in science by Unesco Institute for Statistics (UIS) or the annual reports “Education at a Glance” by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) as well as field-related working groups and networking in order to collect data in a consistent manner. The majority of the international organizations have made clear statements about their discrimination policies (independently of their main field(s) of action), including the International Council for Science whose regulations are followed by the IAU. Gender equality at large is one of the eight United Nations Millennium Development Goals, which clearly calls for action related to science, technology and gender.

<p>Based on the idea of learning organization, schools should be a place for everyone to learn, including teachers and the principals themselves. Hence, schools’ leaders should be prepared to face various possibilities in implementing the concept of learning organization in school. This paper discuss about a study aims to identify future challenges for school principals as leaders in learning organizations. A total of eight school principals have been appointed as panel of experts and involved in a focus group discussion. The results from qualitative data analysis show that there are seven main elements forecast to be the challenges for school leaders in developing their schools as learning organizations in future. The implications of the study suggest that school leaders apply a variety of leadership skills as a result of their learning to overcome those challenges.</p>

Abstract:
Kentucky has the highest cancer incidence and mortality rates in the United States, and lung cancer is Kentucky’s leading cause of cancer deaths. Males in Kentucky have higher lung incidence and mortality rates than females. Through support from the SelfMade Health Network, Kentucky developed a Regional Resource Lead Organization that collaboratively developed a multi-component worksite intervention on lung cancer among male populations. The intervention targets eight Kentucky counties. The first component and focus of this manuscript included focus group meetings with organizational representatives in each county that provide health, educational, and social services to men and worksites. The focus groups discussed four distinct areas: (a) lung cancer-related resources and services in each county; (b) perceived ways men in worksites learn about and access health-related services; (c) identification of potential challenges and barriers to reaching men in worksites; and (d) creation of linkages and potential partnerships between community organizations and worksites. Forty-five organizational representatives participated in the eight focus groups. Most resources and services discussed were related to tobacco treatment. Employers were the most commonly perceived way men learn about and access health-related services, while attitudes and behaviors were the most commonly perceived barriers preventing men from accessing services. The most common potential linkages and partnerships across all areas were community organizations and groups, employers, health-care providers, and mass media. Partnering with employers may provide an opportunity to reach males with lung cancer prevention and control resources and services.

Abstract:
This research study explored how a large, complex global educational organization operationalizes its mission and socializes its constituents to support its mission and values. The study’s unit of analysis was the United World Colleges (UWC), a group of complex international schools whose multi-campus and multinational structure shares a values-driven and activist-oriented mission. With an interest in exploring causation, the researcher employed case study methods to understand how this large organization brings its mission to life on a daily basis.Extensive interviews, observations and document analysis at five units of the organization led to eight themes consistent across all data collected. The research study revealed that the following factors play a significant role in mission operationalization and alignment: (1) The entrance and exit strategy for members of the organization; (2) selection of the organization’s members; (3) curricular choice and teaching methods; (4) use and structure of the physical space; (5) programming; (6) residential life; (7) reflection; and (8) simplicity and tangibility of the mission statement. The study has implications for international schools and organizations keen to create strategic alignment between their mission and daily operations. The findings in the study are generalizable and could inform international organizations in their attempt to implement best practices and make resource allocation decisions to maintain mission fidelity.

Abstract:
Introduction: New communication technologies allow new opportunities to optimize medical work. Objective: To determine the assessment of WhatsApp for communication and organization of group work among resident physicians during a healthcare management course. Methods: Descriptive, prospective, cross-sectional study. The population consisted of 140 resident physicians who participated in a healthcare management course in 2019 and 2020. A non-probability convenience sample of 132 participants was obtained. We applied the instrument to assess WhatsApp for regulating group work, through the dimensions “WhatsApp for organizing group work” and “WhatsApp as a communication system for group work”, with a reliability of 0.92. Based on the scores assigned to this dimension by the participants, we divided them into three groups: low, medium and high rating. Results: Resident physicians from eight specialties participated: psychiatry, internal medicine, otolaryngology, clinical pathology, cardiovascular surgery, anatomic pathology, legal medicine and pediatric ophthalmology. The average age was 33.37 years. 86.4% of residents use WhatsApp daily. Activity planning and sending text messages and brief instructions had favorable scores. Both dimensions scored 47.36% in the low rating group, 46.35% in the high rating group and 39.3% in the medium rating group. The global result showed a predominance of the high and low rating groups. Conclusion: The majority of resident physicians use WhatsApp as a non-formal communication tool, helpful for sending messages, developing group tasks and planning activities. Additionally, resident physicians and professors consider WhatsApp to be a useful app, and it could facilitate knowledge acquisition.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Of 24 ethyl methanesulphonate-induced, recessive-lethal mutations in the region 9E1-9F13 of the X chromosome of Drosophila melanogaster, eight fall into a typically homogeneous lethal complementation group associated with the raspberry (ras) locus. Mutations in this group have previously been shown to be pleiotropic, affecting not only ras but also two other genetic entities, gua1 and pur1, which yield auxotrophic mutations.—The eight new mutations have been characterized phenotypically in double heterozygotes with gua1, pur1 and ras mutations. Despite their homogeneity in lethal complementation tests, the mutations prove quite diverse. For example, two mutations have little or no effect on eye color in double heterozygotes with ras 2. The differences between the lethals are allele-specific and cannot be explained as a trivial outcome of a hypomorphic series.—Taken alone, the lethal complementation studies mask the complexity of the locus and the diversity of its recessive lethal alleles. By extension, we argue that the general use of lethal saturation studies provides an unduly simplified image of genetic organization. We suggest that the reason why recessive lethal mutations rarely present complex complementation patterns is that complex loci tend to produce mutations that affect several subfunctions.

Abstract:
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to contribute to research on learning organizations in higher education institutions (HEIs), by researching the role of individual, group, and organization competencies and skills that support the (NUB) Al Nahda University in Egypt toward becoming a learning organization.Design/methodology/approach: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight executive academics and researchers in (NUB) Al Nahda University in Egypt. Questions emphasised leadership competencies, including those at individual, group, and organizational level, for utilising their skills in creating, sharing and transferring knowledge for modifying and changing their behaviour to achieve a learning organization.Findings: Leadership competencies emerged as a complementary component to the DLOQ framework and it was found that the Seven Characteristics (7Cs) proposed by Watkins and Marsick (2003) did not lead to being a learning organization, nor did being a learning organization lead to knowledge performance and financial performance by itself unless fully supported by leadership competencies, as was confirmed in the case of the Al-Nahda University operating in Egypt.Originality/value: There is still a lack of investigation and global response to the question of how leadership competencies can support learning inside higher education institutions. The outcomes of this research allow a better understanding of how leadership competencies can support the process of becoming a learning organization in HEIs, via a qualitative investigation of the DLOQ framework.

The main objective of this article is to explore the validity of the Factors of Creativity and Organizational Innovation (FINO) Measure in a Brazilian sample and ascertain the predictive power of individual, group, and organizational factors in relation to the perceived innovation in the organization. Evidence of the validity of this measure was previously found with workers in the Basque Country and in Latin-American countries. A total of 265 workers from various organizations participated in this survey study. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and linear regression analysis with observable variables were performed by means of structural equation modeling. The CFA results indicate that the model with the best fit has eight correlated factors. The regression analysis suggests that the factors Work Characteristics, Leadership, and Personal Traits for Creativity and Innovation predict the perception of innovation in the organization.

Hyland, Lee. "Electroless deposition of group eight metals." Thesis, University of Hull, 1995. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:3902.

Full text
Abstract:
Electroless plating is the controlled chemical reduction of metals without the use of an applied external potential. The use of electroless plating has a number of advantages over electroplating including the ability to deposit coatings onto complex-shaped objects which can be metallic or non-metallic, such as plastics. The most widely used electroless coating is electroless nickel prepared using sodium hypophosphite as reductant. This results in coatings which contain phosphorus. The properties of metal coatings containing non-metals are frequently superior compared to those of the pure metal. The first part of present work was concerned with the development of an electroless plating solution capable of depositing palladium-boron coatings. The plating solution is based on EDTA-stabilised palladium (H) ions in the presence of dimethylamine borane as the reducing agent. At a pH of 10.5 the solution deposits bright adherent coatings at 1 μm per 10 h. The plating solution operates at room temperature within narrow limits of composition and concentration: small deviations in composition from the optimum results in solution decomposition.Characterisation of electroless palladium-boron coatings indicates that the inclusion of boron decreases the corrosion resistance of the coating. Examination of palladium-boron coatings by X-ray diffractometry show that the lattice parameter has been increased by 2.86%.The second part of the present work was concerned with the development of pure ruthenium coatings. The plating solution developed uses hydrazine hydrate as the reducing agent with methylamine as stabiliser. The plating solution operates at a pH of 13 and at 60°C, and deposits 65% of the available ruthenium in 5 h. This corresponds to a 3 gm coating over a substrate surface area of 25 cm2.The coatings produced are bright and adherent. The roughness of the substrate surface was found to be important to obtaining adherent coatings over 2 gm thick. A roughness in the order of 1100 A was found to be satisfactory. Scanning electron microscopy shows the coatings to be dense with no obvious pores. The porosity of the coatings was found to be low, decreasing with increasing coating thickness. However, the electrochemical properties of the coatings indicate that ruthenium coatings have poor corrosion resistance. The chemistry of the plating solution, particularly for ruthenium, is considered in some detail.

Koger, Janae. "POWER AND COHERENCE MATTERS: DOES PERCEIVED GROUP ORGANIZATION INCREASE ATHEIST PREJUDICE?" CSUSB ScholarWorks, 2018. https://scholarworks.lib.csusb.edu/etd/751.

Abstract:
Atheists are some of the least liked people in the world. Previous research has demonstrated that in most stigmatized groups, increased prevalence of the group increases prejudice towards the group. However, the opposite has been found with atheists- increased perceived prevalence decreases prejudice towards atheists. One post-hoc explanation provided for this difference is that since atheists are easily concealable and unorganized as a group, their greater prevalence may not be perceived as a threat. In the present thesis, I 1) attempted to replicate the existing finding that perceived increased prevalence would increase trust towards atheists and 2) directly tested the hypothesis that if atheist groups are presented as collectively powerful and coherent, increased prevalence will no longer decrease anti-atheist prejudice. I did not find support for the hypothesis that prevalence increases atheist trust, nor did I find support for my hypotheses that power and cohesion would manipulate distrust. Atheist prejudice is still pervasive, however, prejudice against atheists may be changing.

Cress, Daniel Miles. "Mobilization among the homeless: A comparative study of organization, action, and outcomes in eight United States cities." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1993. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/186536.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examines mobilization and collective action by the homeless in eight U.S. cities. Much of the focus of social movement research emphasizes either broad macro-level social processes or micro-level individual characteristics to understand movement dynamics. This research focuses on the organizational context and dynamics of homeless mobilization. I argue that the organizational level not only mediates dynamics at the macro and micro level, but that organizational processes themselves shape the possibility and course of mobilization and collective action. I identify the environmental factors that constrain the possibilities of organizational action by the homeless and the organizational characteristics of homeless social movement organizations (SMOs) that are associated with the ability to successfully negotiate these environments. The core of the dissertation is organized around four related issues: the organizational environment, resources, form, and action and outcomes. I map the organizational field of homeless mobilization and illustrate how the presence or absence of various organizational orientations within the field influences the potential for resource acquisition, the type of form adopted, and the types of collective action tactics and outcomes available to the homeless. Next, I examine the resource relationships of homeless SMOs, the types of resources they mobilize, and the influence of particular types of resources on SMO viability. Following this, I explore the role of organizational form on homeless mobilization and collective action and the various pathways by which the homeless SMOs came to adopt or not adopt nonprofit form. Finally, I examine the determinants of collective action tactics utilized by homeless SMOs and their efficacy in procuring various outcomes. By emphasizing the organizational level, this dissertation operates at the intersection of the organizational and social movements literatures. Thus, the research offers theoretical insights for both while addressing a neglected level of analysis in the study of social movements.

Abstract:
We present the survey strategy and early results of the "Satellites Around Galactic Analogs" (SAGA) Survey. The SAGA. Survey's goal is to measure the distribution of satellite galaxies around 100 systems analogous to the Milky Way down to the luminosity of the Leo I dwarf galaxy (M-r < -12.3). We define a Milky Way analog based on K-band luminosity and local environment. Here, we present satellite luminosity functions for eight Milky-Way-analog galaxies between 20 and 40. Mpc. These systems have nearly complete spectroscopic coverage of candidate satellites within the projected host virial radius down to r(o) < 20.75 using low-redshift gri color criteria. We have discovered a total of 25 new satellite galaxies: 14. new satellite galaxies meet our formal criteria around our complete host systems, plus 11 additional satellites in either incompletely surveyed hosts or below our formal magnitude limit. Combined with 13 previously known satellites, there are a total of 27 satellites around 8 complete Milky-Way-analog hosts. We find a wide distribution in the number of satellites per host, from 1 to 9, in the luminosity range for which there are 5 Milky Way satellites. Standard abundance matching extrapolated from higher luminosities predicts less scatter between hosts and a steeper luminosity function slope than observed. We find that the majority of satellites (26 of 27) are star-forming. These early results indicate that the Milky Way has a different satellite population than typical in our sample, potentially changing the physical interpretation of measurements based only on the Milky Way's satellite galaxies.

Abstract:
With the rapid advance of information technologies, human beings increasingly rely on computers to accumulate, process, and make use of data. Knowledge discovery techniques have been proposed to automatically search large volumes of data for patterns.Group Support Systems (GSS) play an important role in streamlining group activities and improving group outcomes. Various attempts have been made to help automate several tasks in group activities under GSS environment. One of the approaches is to apply automatic approach to idea organization task in GSS.This research designed and tested an SVD-enabled system to automate the idea organization task in GSS. Specifically, this research was conducted to examine how the idea organization task, typically regarded as the most labor-intensive and cognitively demanding in group problems solving, can be automated using a system enabled by singular value decomposition techniques. For the purpose of evaluation, we compared the performance of our automated approach using SVD algorithm against that of human subjects. Two separate experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance of the automatic approach on two essential components of an idea organization; namely, generation of topic categories and placement of relevant comments into their respective categories. The general conclusion that can be made from this research is that idea organization in group problem solving can be facilitated both efficiently and effectively with the SVD-enabled system that can automatically generate topic categories and place relevant comments into their respective topic categories. Therefore, our automatic approach may provide a useful and promising tool for the idea organization task in GSS.

Abstract:
AbstractSocial media has nowadays become an important driver for sharing information, knowledge, and marketing promotion, used by enterprises and universities around the world. After COVID-19 crisis businesses and organizations have accelerated procedures for the implementation of new technologies. This research aims to shed light and to add to the existing literature in regard to the Greek case and the implementation of social media in Higher education. This study investigates Greek Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) students’ actual use of social media for educational purposes. The research questions are the following: What is the higher education students’ use of social networks for educational purposes in the classroom? How can universities integrate social media as an important tool to ameliorate their curriculum and knowledge sharing? A structured questionnaire was sent to a convenient sample of forty-eight students from Greek universities and a focus group with three students from a Greek university was created to support this research. This consists a pilot study research which is part of a broader study and preliminary results illustrate that at the moment there is little or no use of social networks for educational and creative purposes in Greek HEIs, although students believe that media and technology in general can help the education process. Understanding why and how social media can be integrated in the classroom might become a key competitive advantage for universities in the future. When using social networks for educational purposes and also for sharing information and promotion, universities can significantly improve their research opportunities, profit, academic and organizational arrangement.

Abstract:
This paper proposes an approach to classify the organizational structure of a group of moving target agents that are continuously monitored by a smaller group of moving observer agents. The approach considers that the group of target agents can organize themselves according to eight different paradigms. The agents communicate through the exchange of messages whose contents are speech-act performative. We evaluate the approach considering seven techniques to solve the problem of classifying the group of target agents' organizational structure. The results show that the approach is promising, as it obtained a good performance, measured during experiments using agent-based simulations.

Abstract:
In recent years, the health characteristics of those employed in hazardous working conditions have been featured by a decrease in the level of occupational morbidity with a simultaneous increase in the number of general somatic polyethological diseases. This determined the topicality of industrial-related morbidity leading to the loss of vocational fitness of the employees. The purpose of the work was to study the expert activity of the health authorities of the primary and specialized levels of the regional occupational pathology service to develop the technology of the expert activity increasing its effectiveness. Method of retrospective analysis of medical organizations reports and the health authorities protocols at the Center of Occupational Pathology has been applied in the work. Results of comparative analysis of the health authorities' work for eight years showed that at the Center of Occupational Pathology the level of diseases detection included in the approved list of contraindications was four times higher than the level of detection at all medical organizations of the region. Application of the technology developed at the Center, including allocation of the employees requiring vocational fitness assessment to the groups; routing of the patients ensuring the cooperation of the Center, primary care organizations and the employer, has made it possible to set up a dispensary observation group. Vocational fitness has been restored to 30% of this group employees. Conclusions are drawn about the necessity to develop the expert activity of the occupational pathology service as a tool for the prevention of industrial-related morbidity leading to the loss of vocational fitness of the employees taking into account the leading organizational and coordinating role of the Regional Center of Occupational Pathology.

Abstract:
School socioeconomic segregation has an impact on students’ academic performance and affects equity in education. This study aims to evaluate socioeconomic segregation in schools and its changes in the previous decades, using data obtained from international large-scale assessments (ILSA). In this study, data from eight European Union (EU) countries bordering the Baltic Sea (i.e. Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Poland and Germany) were analysed. Data from two International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) studies, i.e. Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) 2015 & 2019 (Grade 4), and International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) 2009 & 2016 (Grade 8), and data obtained from 7 cycles (2000 to 2018) of Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) were used for the analysis. School segregation was assessed by calculating Dissimilarity Index. In each country, students in the highest 10% of socioeconomic status (SES) of their families and in the lowest 10% of SES of their families were examined. These two groups accordingly had the highest and the lowest achievements in students’ tests in each country. The obtained results show that the highest school segregation can be observed in Germany, Lithuania, Poland, but the lowest – in Finland and Sweden. The authors conclude that there is no significant decrease in segregation in the previous two decades, which would promote equal education opportunities. OECD PISA 2018 results show that in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland highest segregation for low SES group is in large cities, but for the high SES group – in rural areas. The causes of school segregation might be explained as – (1) high SES students reluctance to (or parents preference not to) attend small schools, (2) exclusion (e.g. through entrance exams) of low SES students from schools in large cities.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to gather recommendations from organizational leaders, faculty, and students as an input to curricular reform for healthcare programs. The method was a qualitative research with a focus group and interviews with 26 leaders, faculty, and students. Focus group participants were leaders who dialogued reflect on the future tasks of healthcare professionals of the future. The data from the focus group was analysed learning environment dimensions. Five themes emerged from the focus groups. Eight leaders from associations, hospitals and medical schools remarked the importance on: 1) patient centered care, emphasis on prevention and well-being, 2) professionalism and identity formation, 4) innovation, research, and technology, 5) leadership for healthcare systems. Interviews showed that biomedical contents develop critical thinking and self-directed learning. Interviewees recommended starting patient care earlier on the program. There was a significant curricular reform to address opportunities and suggestions from participants. Perspectives from different stakeholders helped to develop inter-professional education for five programs. Patient Centeredness is learned from the first year of the programs through challenge-based learning. This approach which started on August 2019 is intended to develop leaders for the improvement of the healthcare systems. Even that scientific and technological advances demand radical change for universities, there are centuries of history that restrain them. At Tecnologico de Monterrey, School of Medicine and Health Sciences an integrated curriculum with challenges for wellness instead of diseases is now a reality. In 8th International Conference on Human Interaction and Emerging Technologies. AHFE International, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.54941/ahfe1002773.

Full text
Abstract:
In recent years there has been more development of automation solutions for underground mining operations. Various vendors usually provide their proprietary machines and remote operation stations (ROS) to their customers, which makes information for remote supervisory control increasingly distributed and scattered for the operators. Integrating existing automation solutions such as introducing unified ROS could be considered potentially beneficial to ameliorate the problem of information fragmentation, enhance user experience and improve productivity, but it is critical to understand the effect of such future technological solutions in the sociotechnical system where elements of human, technologies and organization interact with each other. Integrating automation solutions is essentially bringing changes to the work system which would potentially pose new demands on the human operators and existing rules. This paper aims to uncover the challenges that may emerge in the sociotechnical system of remote underground mining as well as their design implications. A field study to a modern underground mining site in Sweden was conducted to explore the user perspectives of a diverse range of the workers who are designated different tasks per current organizational structure and goals. During the field study, eight participants including six remote control operators and two management personnel were invited for in-depth individual interviews. Additionally, two of them and another five operators were invited for a focus group interview. The participants were asked about their experiences of remote control operations and their interaction with the existing systems, together with their perceptions and views on how a unified remote operation station can affect their daily practice. The qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings have revealed a range of inter-connected challenges for the realization of the unified ROS, covering cognitive, organizational, physical, technical and interface design aspects. They suggest that whether the operators can continue succeeding in remote supervisory control does not only rely on the capabilities of the futuristic notion of unified ROS, but also on how the human-technology interaction relationship unfolds in the new working context. These insights inform the value of a holistic systems approach when it comes to feasibility studies on new technologies and their impact on human users. To address the concerns of the operators and ensure improved user experience and safety, it is important that the design of the systems is aligned with reorganization endeavors. Besides, collaborative efforts among industrial vendors are considered necessary to ultimately benefit the users.

Abstract:
Digitalization enables public organizations to personalize their services, tuning them to the specific situation, abilities, and preferences of the citizens. At the same time, digital services can be experienced as being less personal than face-to-face contact by citizens. The large existing volume of academic literature on personalization mainly represents the service provider perspective. In contrast, in this paper we investigate what makes citizens experience a service as personal. The result are eight dimensions that capture the full range of individual experiences and expectations that citizens expressed in focus groups. These dimensions can serve as a framework for public sector organizations to explore the expectations of citizens of their own services and identify the areas in which they can improve the personal experiences they offer.

Abstract:
The Belgian Safety Authorities requested to address the severe accident issue within the periodic safety review of the Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs). The key elements of the approach applied in Belgium include the implementation and the validation of the Severe Accident Management Guidance (SAMG). The present paper focuses on the validation of the SAMG that has taken place during the last four years. The validation process aims at verifying the ability of the Technical Support Center (TSC) to manage severe accidents thanks to the implemented Severe Accident Management Guidance. The validation was practically realized by table-top drills based on Westinghouse Owner’s Group SAMG scenario templates. Eight scenarios were exercised: 7 at full power and 1 at shutdown state. One of the scenarios consists in a fast evolving scenario. This paper details the methodology used for the validation process as well as the feedback of the validation exercises realized in the NPPs. In a first phase the objectives of the exercises were defined in agreement with the Safety Authorities; successively, the exercises were realized in the TSC in presence of the Safety Authorities with the active participation of the members of the crisis team that would be present in the TSC. For each exercise, a scenarist presented the chronology of events until the opening of the SAMG. Then, during the severe accident phase, the scenarist regularly provided the evolution of the parameters and was playing also the role of the control room, if needed. That organization is described and analyzed. Moreover, the paper reports on the general feedback from the exercises and the major findings of the validation. Possible adaptations and improvements of the guidelines have been identified, such as for example additional or alternative entry criteria to the guidelines, priorities definition due to the existence of the safety injection-containment spray connection, evaluation of the application of the WOG SAMG to shutdown states and supplementary information for alternative electrical supply in case of station black-out.

Abstract:
In September 2006, the regulatory body of Japan, the Nuclear Industry and Safety Agency (NISA), issued an interim report entitled “The improvement of the inspection system for nuclear power plants” which had been reviewed by the Subcommittee of the Advisory Committee on Nuclear and Industrial Safety. The report addresses the potential use of risk information in order to identify the safety significant inspection scope, to select and evaluate performance indicators, to evaluate the safety significance of inspection findings, and to enhance the maintenance program. NISA has been preparing for the new inspection system in Fiscal Year 2008. Before the implementation, technical bases such as the detailed design of the new inspection system and the pilot application of major issues need to be developed. The technical support of this new inspection program is now in progress by the Japan Nuclear Energy Safety Organization (JNES) to develop methodology and technical bases for improvement of efficiency and transparency of regulatory inspection, application of risk information to develop maintenance program guidelines, selection of performance indicators, identification of the safety significance of inspection findings and comprehensive evaluation of individual plants. This paper shows the development and sample calculation of significance determination process (SDP) which is one part of the new inspection program. The SDP is applied to evaluate the significance of inspection findings. The inspection findings are categorized into four groups such as the safety function facet, the risk facet, the public and occupational radiation exposure facet and the safety importance (SI) of the inspection findings are evaluated with risk information. The sample calculation with this SDP indicated that the level of SI is the same level by the current deterministic evaluation process. At present, the SDP models have been developed into the eight types of typical Japanese nuclear power plants for Boiling Water Reactor (BWR), BWR-3, BWR-4, BWR-5, Advanced BWR, 2-Loop, 3-Loop, 4-Loop Dry Containment Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) and 4-Loop Ice-Condenser PWR.

Abstract:
One of the well-known results of the theory of management is the fact, that multi-stage hierarchical organization of management is unstable. Hence, the ideas expressed in a number of works by Don Tapscott on advantages of network organization of businesses over vertically integrated ones is clear. While studying the basic tendencies of business organization in the conditions of globalization, computerization and internetization of the society and the results of the financial activities of the well-known companies, the authors arrive at the conclusion, that such companies, as IBM, Boeing, Mercedes-Benz and some others companies have not been engaged in their traditional business for a long time. Their partner networks performs this function instead of them. The companies themselves perform the function of system integrators. The Tapscott’s idea finds its confirmation within the framework of a new powerful direction of the development of the modern interdisciplinary science – the theory of the complex networks (CN) [2]. CN-s are multifractal objects, the loss of multifractality being the indicator of the system transition from more complex state into more simple state. We tested the multifractal properties of the data using the wavelet transform modulus maxima approach in order to analyze scaling properties of our company. Comparative analysis of the singularity spectrumf(®), namely, the difference between maximum and minimum values of ® (∆ = ®max ¡ ®min) shows that IBM company is considerably more fractal in comparison with Apple Computer. Really, for it the value of ∆ is equal to 0.3, while for the vertically integrated company Apple it only makes 0.06 – 5 times less. The comparison of other companies shows that this dependence is of general character. Taking into consideration the fact that network organization of business has become dominant in the last 5-10 years, we carried out research for the selected companies in the earliest possible period of time which was determined by the availability of data in the Internet, or by historically later beginning of stock trade of computer companies. A singularity spectrum of the first group of companies turned out to be considerably narrower, or shifted toward the smaller values of ® in the pre-network period. The latter means that dynamic series were antipersistant. That is, these companies‘ management was rigidly controlled while the impact of market mechanisms was minimized. In the second group of companies if even the situation did changed it did not change for the better. In addition, we discuss applications to the construction of portfolios of stock that have a stable ratio of risk to return.

Soares, Tatiana Fontes, John Eriksson, Marco Velarde, and Alejandro Soriano. IDB-9: Corporate Results Framework. Inter-American Development Bank, March 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0010518.

Full text
Abstract:
In IDB-9 the Board of Governors of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB or Bank) mandated implementation of a corporate results framework (CRF), leading to greater emphasis on results throughout the Bank. This background paper responds to the Governors' request that the Office of Evaluation and Oversight (OVE) evaluate the completeness and effectiveness of CRF implementation at the IDB-9 midpoint. The findings of this paper are based on a review of relevant Board and Bank strategic and operational documents as well as interviews with mid- and senior-level staff and Executive Directors. Given the Board¿s emphasis on the experience of other multilateral development banks (MDBs) and donors in implementing corporate results frameworks, eight representatives from five organizations (four MDBs and one bilateral donor) were also interviewed and relevant documents reviewed. OVE finds that the IDB has made significant progress toward managing for development results anchored in a CRF. However, the CRF has not yet become an integral tool to guide the Bank¿s overall strategy and operations, as IDB-9 envisioned. Inconsistencies and gaps in the CRF structure reduce the value of the CRF for purposes of setting corporate goals and future (post-2015) targets, monitoring corporate progress, evaluating corporate performance, reinforcing corporate accountability, and supporting corporate decision-making. Quality control of data and reporting of CRF information are further weaknesses. The Bank is still in a relatively early stage of implementation, given that many of the targets are only formally effective in 2012 with the first round of subscriptions to the capital increase. This paper thus identifies a number of issues that can usefully be addressed going forward. Based on these findings, OVE suggests that the Bank (i) correct inconsistencies and gaps, to the extent possible, before the 2013 Development Effectiveness Overview (DEO) is issued; (ii) strengthen identification and measurement of outputs and intermediate and sector outcomes to provide a stronger link between operations and higher-level results; (iii) study existing examples of good practice, such as that in the Andean Countries Group, for possible wider applicability within the Bank; (iv) prepare a document describing the process of generating, collecting, entering, and vetting data that go into the CRF and submit to the Board for formal approval to ensure transparency and accountability; (v) de-emphasize descriptive project narratives in the DEO and synthesize project information to illustrate issues that emerge from the CRF tables; (vi) at the end of the current CRF period in 2015, assess implementation experience since 2010 and make warranted revisions in the framework before the period beginning in 2016; and (vii) focus the work of the recently established CRF "Community of Practice" of the MDB Working Group on Managing for Development Results on the complex issues facing all MDBs, such as moving to higher results levels and using CRF information for evaluating staff performance.

Abstract:
"A recent industry trend survey of CEOs found that only 11% of organizations report having a strong enough bench to fill leadership roles (Rhyne, 2021). As such, effective leadership development is an imperative for any high-performing organization. Rather than focusing time, money, and energy on only a small subset of “high-potential” employees, organizations can realize the full potential of their entire workforce by providing tech-enabled leadership development to leaders at all levels. This paper shares the following insights for Chief Learning Officers interested in leveraging evidence-based practices to accelerate leader development at scale and unlock the collective potential of their workforce: • A brief overview of why we need new ways to develop leaders and a high-level description of the new digital assessment and development tools that meet individuals where they are – offering a highly personalized approach to development in-the-flow of work. • A review of eight research-based learning practices that provide a foundation for leveraging technology to make in-the-flow leadership development better, faster, and more accessible to leaders at all levels. For every learning practice, we provide implementation tips and discuss illustrative example tools. • We conclude with a discussion around the strategic use of the eight learning practices for enabling better organization-wide development outcomes.
