Hyland, Lee. "Electroless deposition of group eight metals." Thesis, University of Hull, 1995. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:3902.

Full text
Abstract:
Electroless plating is the controlled chemical reduction of metals without the use of an applied external potential. The use of electroless plating has a number of advantages over electroplating including the ability to deposit coatings onto complex-shaped objects which can be metallic or non-metallic, such as plastics. The most widely used electroless coating is electroless nickel prepared using sodium hypophosphite as reductant. This results in coatings which contain phosphorus. The properties of metal coatings containing non-metals are frequently superior compared to those of the pure metal. The first part of present work was concerned with the development of an electroless plating solution capable of depositing palladium-boron coatings. The plating solution is based on EDTA-stabilised palladium (H) ions in the presence of dimethylamine borane as the reducing agent. At a pH of 10.5 the solution deposits bright adherent coatings at 1 μm per 10 h. The plating solution operates at room temperature within narrow limits of composition and concentration: small deviations in composition from the optimum results in solution decomposition.Characterisation of electroless palladium-boron coatings indicates that the inclusion of boron decreases the corrosion resistance of the coating. Examination of palladium-boron coatings by X-ray diffractometry show that the lattice parameter has been increased by 2.86%.The second part of the present work was concerned with the development of pure ruthenium coatings. The plating solution developed uses hydrazine hydrate as the reducing agent with methylamine as stabiliser. The plating solution operates at a pH of 13 and at 60°C, and deposits 65% of the available ruthenium in 5 h. This corresponds to a 3 gm coating over a substrate surface area of 25 cm2.The coatings produced are bright and adherent. The roughness of the substrate surface was found to be important to obtaining adherent coatings over 2 gm thick. A roughness in the order of 1100 A was found to be satisfactory. Scanning electron microscopy shows the coatings to be dense with no obvious pores. The porosity of the coatings was found to be low, decreasing with increasing coating thickness. However, the electrochemical properties of the coatings indicate that ruthenium coatings have poor corrosion resistance. The chemistry of the plating solution, particularly for ruthenium, is considered in some detail.

Koger, Janae. "POWER AND COHERENCE MATTERS: DOES PERCEIVED GROUP ORGANIZATION INCREASE ATHEIST PREJUDICE?" CSUSB ScholarWorks, 2018. https://scholarworks.lib.csusb.edu/etd/751.

Full text
Abstract:
Atheists are some of the least liked people in the world. Previous research has demonstrated that in most stigmatized groups, increased prevalence of the group increases prejudice towards the group. However, the opposite has been found with atheists- increased perceived prevalence decreases prejudice towards atheists. One post-hoc explanation provided for this difference is that since atheists are easily concealable and unorganized as a group, their greater prevalence may not be perceived as a threat. In the present thesis, I 1) attempted to replicate the existing finding that perceived increased prevalence would increase trust towards atheists and 2) directly tested the hypothesis that if atheist groups are presented as collectively powerful and coherent, increased prevalence will no longer decrease anti-atheist prejudice. I did not find support for the hypothesis that prevalence increases atheist trust, nor did I find support for my hypotheses that power and cohesion would manipulate distrust. Atheist prejudice is still pervasive, however, prejudice against atheists may be changing.

Cress, Daniel Miles. "Mobilization among the homeless: A comparative study of organization, action, and outcomes in eight United States cities." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1993. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/186536.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examines mobilization and collective action by the homeless in eight U.S. cities. Much of the focus of social movement research emphasizes either broad macro-level social processes or micro-level individual characteristics to understand movement dynamics. This research focuses on the organizational context and dynamics of homeless mobilization. I argue that the organizational level not only mediates dynamics at the macro and micro level, but that organizational processes themselves shape the possibility and course of mobilization and collective action. I identify the environmental factors that constrain the possibilities of organizational action by the homeless and the organizational characteristics of homeless social movement organizations (SMOs) that are associated with the ability to successfully negotiate these environments. The core of the dissertation is organized around four related issues: the organizational environment, resources, form, and action and outcomes. I map the organizational field of homeless mobilization and illustrate how the presence or absence of various organizational orientations within the field influences the potential for resource acquisition, the type of form adopted, and the types of collective action tactics and outcomes available to the homeless. Next, I examine the resource relationships of homeless SMOs, the types of resources they mobilize, and the influence of particular types of resources on SMO viability. Following this, I explore the role of organizational form on homeless mobilization and collective action and the various pathways by which the homeless SMOs came to adopt or not adopt nonprofit form. Finally, I examine the determinants of collective action tactics utilized by homeless SMOs and their efficacy in procuring various outcomes. By emphasizing the organizational level, this dissertation operates at the intersection of the organizational and social movements literatures. Thus, the research offers theoretical insights for both while addressing a neglected level of analysis in the study of social movements.

Full text
Abstract:
We present the survey strategy and early results of the "Satellites Around Galactic Analogs" (SAGA) Survey. The SAGA. Survey's goal is to measure the distribution of satellite galaxies around 100 systems analogous to the Milky Way down to the luminosity of the Leo I dwarf galaxy (M-r < -12.3). We define a Milky Way analog based on K-band luminosity and local environment. Here, we present satellite luminosity functions for eight Milky-Way-analog galaxies between 20 and 40. Mpc. These systems have nearly complete spectroscopic coverage of candidate satellites within the projected host virial radius down to r(o) < 20.75 using low-redshift gri color criteria. We have discovered a total of 25 new satellite galaxies: 14. new satellite galaxies meet our formal criteria around our complete host systems, plus 11 additional satellites in either incompletely surveyed hosts or below our formal magnitude limit. Combined with 13 previously known satellites, there are a total of 27 satellites around 8 complete Milky-Way-analog hosts. We find a wide distribution in the number of satellites per host, from 1 to 9, in the luminosity range for which there are 5 Milky Way satellites. Standard abundance matching extrapolated from higher luminosities predicts less scatter between hosts and a steeper luminosity function slope than observed. We find that the majority of satellites (26 of 27) are star-forming. These early results indicate that the Milky Way has a different satellite population than typical in our sample, potentially changing the physical interpretation of measurements based only on the Milky Way's satellite galaxies.

Yuan, Ming. "An Automatic Classifcation Approach to Idea Organization in Group Support Systems." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/195266.

Full text
Abstract:
With the rapid advance of information technologies, human beings increasingly rely on computers to accumulate, process, and make use of data. Knowledge discovery techniques have been proposed to automatically search large volumes of data for patterns.Group Support Systems (GSS) play an important role in streamlining group activities and improving group outcomes. Various attempts have been made to help automate several tasks in group activities under GSS environment. One of the approaches is to apply automatic approach to idea organization task in GSS.This research designed and tested an SVD-enabled system to automate the idea organization task in GSS. Specifically, this research was conducted to examine how the idea organization task, typically regarded as the most labor-intensive and cognitively demanding in group problems solving, can be automated using a system enabled by singular value decomposition techniques. For the purpose of evaluation, we compared the performance of our automated approach using SVD algorithm against that of human subjects. Two separate experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance of the automatic approach on two essential components of an idea organization; namely, generation of topic categories and placement of relevant comments into their respective categories. The general conclusion that can be made from this research is that idea organization in group problem solving can be facilitated both efficiently and effectively with the SVD-enabled system that can automatically generate topic categories and place relevant comments into their respective topic categories. Therefore, our automatic approach may provide a useful and promising tool for the idea organization task in GSS.

In this roundtable, our speakers analyze, evaluate and criticize the new legal scenario which is the collective labor law, specifically related to collective bargaining, in an area influenced by the development of capitalism, which is beginning to cause different forms business organizations that break the paradigm of the definition of company we know, and thus leads us to redesign legal parameters to meet the challenges of the now called “business groups” and “network companies” for a proper defense of the collective rights of workers and defend the interests of employers.

Abstract:
Bibliography: pages 121-131.
This is an ethnographic study of the writing processes and meaningmaking attempts of a group of English first language pupils in a Cape Town secondary school. The project was based on a twostage design. During the first stage, pupils' writing behaviour was observed, and their writing samples and written reflections provided data for analysis. In the second stage, two "key informants" were selected and interviewed, after a preliminary analysis of their written work. Three main theoretical fields provided the conceptual framework for the project: process writing theory and research, discourse and genre theory, and theories of identity. In the first research stage, process theory highlighted those aspects of the school writing event which were shown to assist or obstruct pupil writers in communicating their meanings in writing. In the second stage, discourse and genre theory, and especially the concept of intertextuality, provided insights into how young writers borrow from other textual resources, and construct roles for themselves and their readers. The text analyses and the interview findings supported those theories of identity which showed how subjects may construct multiple Identities and roles for themselves in conversation and in writing.

Chebaya, Philip. "The relationship between maternal serum and breast milk vitamin B12 concentrations in a primarly supplemented versus an unsupplemented group : assesed at eight weeks postpartum." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/52421.

Full text
Abstract:
BACKGROUND: Vitamin B12 is an essential nutrient for adequate infant growth and development and breast milk is the only dietary source of vitamin B12 to the exclusively breast-fed infant. Little is known on the relationship between maternal serum vitamin B12 and breast milk vitamin B12. A better understanding of this relationship will provide insight into the determinants of milk vitamin B12 concentrations, including maternal vitamin B12 supplementation, for optimal infant vitamin B12 status. OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between maternal serum and breast milk vitamin B12 concentrations at eight weeks postpartum in both a supplemented and unsupplemented population and to explore these associations with infant serum vitamin B12 concentrations in the supplemented group. METHODS: Vitamin B12 concentrations were measured in infant serum, maternal serum and breast milk samples (n=186) collected from two previous studies; in Canada (supplemented) and New Zealand (unsupplemented). Supplemented participants were provided with a prenatal supplement containing 12µg of vitamin B12 during pregnancy to eight weeks postpartum. Breast milk and maternal blood were available from both studies, with infant blood only available from the supplemented group. Serum samples were measured using an Elecsys immunoassay analyzer, while an IMMULITE chemiluminescence machine measured breast milk vitamin B12 concentrations. RESULTS: The supplemented group had significantly higher serum vitamin B12 concentrations (Geometric mean: 665pmol/l; 95%CI: 601,685) compared to the unsupplemented group (403pmol/l, 365, 445). Maternal serum vitamin B12 was associated with breast milk vitamin B12 in the supplemented and unsupplemented groups (r=0.577, p<0.0001; r=0.414 p=0.01, respectively). Infant serum vitamin B12 concentrations were associated with both maternal serum vitamin B12 (r=0.299 p=0.001) and breast milk B12 (r=337 p<0.0001) concentrations. CONCLUSION: Supplement use during pregnancy and lactation may lead to higher vitamin B12 concentrations in maternal serum and breast milk. Infant serum vitamin B12 concentrations appear to be related to maternal status and this may be mediated by enhanced breast milk vitamin B12. Further RCT are needed to investigate the effects of maternal vitamin B12 supplementation on infant vitamin B12 status.

Abstract:
This thesis project is an act of solidarity research with the Berlin based Latin American women’s organization Xochicuicatl. Along the idea that research should be based on the interests and needs of oppressed groups, the research design was developed in cooperation with the organization. The study centers on migration movements between Latin America and the Caribbean and Germany. Moreover, it investigates the dynamics of inner-outer interplay between the organization the beneficiaries and the overall migrant group. The main method isa qualitative content analysis of documents out of the organization’s archive. The organization’s response to transformations is thereby analyzed through action within invited (coping) and invented (resistance) spaces of citizenship. In this regard, the organization’s space is understoodas a subaltern counterpublic which enables a connection between coping and resistance.

Doctoral thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2022. http://amsdottorato.unibo.it/10059/1/Nicola%20Nasi%2C%20PhD%20thesis.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
This PhD thesis investigates children’s peer practices in two primary schools in Italy, focusing on the ordinary and the Italian L2 classroom. The study is informed by the paradigm of language socialization and considers peer interactions as a ‘double opportunity space’, allowing both children’s co-construction of their social organization and children’s sociolinguistic development. These two foci of attention are explored on the basis of children’s social interaction and of the verbal, embodied, and material resources that children agentively deploy during their mundane activities in the peer group. The study is based on a video ethnography that lasted nine months. Approximately 30 hours of classroom interactions were video-recorded, transcribed, and analyzed with an approach that combines the micro-analytic instruments of Conversation Analysis and the use of ethnographic information. Three main social phenomena were selected for analysis: (a) children’s enactment of the role of the teacher, (b) children’s reproduction of must-formatted rules, and (c) children’s argumentative strategies during peer conflict. The analysis highlights the centrality of the institutional frame for children’s peer interactions in the classroom. Moreover, the study illustrates that children socialize their classmates to the linguistic, social, and moral expectations of the context in and through various practices. Notably, these practices are also germane to the local negotiation of children’s social organization and hierarchy. Therefore, the thesis underlines that children’s peer interactions are both a resource for children’s sociolinguistic development and a potentially problematic locus where social exclusion is constructed and brought to bear. These insights are relevant for teachers’ professional practice. Children’s peer interactions are a resource that can be integrated in everyday didactics. Nevertheless, the role of the teacher in supervising and steering children’s peer practices appears crucial: an acritical view of children’s autonomous work, often implied in teaching methods such as peer tutoring, needs to be problematized.

This theses examined adult learners' experiences of group work in management education. Group work is an integral part of learning and teaching methods at most business schools because it develops team skills demanded by today's workplace. Furthermore, group work in education is grounded in the belief that much learning happens through social interaction and that diversity within groups promotes learning. This study analysed learners' group experiences in a business school. The study also aimed to identify conditions that hinder and promote group interaction with a view to enhance learning.

Abstract:
The purpose of this report was to find out how a sustainable organization could look like in amodern e-commerce business. The reason for this purpose was because the organization iseasily forgotten while production constantly implements improvements and efficiency. The scientific frame of reference in this study was based on Henry Mintzberg'sextensive organizational theory, which clarified the picture of how an organization is built.Interviews and observations at Ellos Group’s logistics department clarified the currentsituation in their organization and the analysis could be conducted. The analysis comparisonsbetween theory and present situation resulted in conclusions being reached. These conclusionswere based on the issue, thus focusing mainly on being able to contribute to a sustainableorganizational which can handle future changes in the best possible way. An importantconclusion to achieve this was to have employments that are consistent, clear and fair.Another conclusion was to have an organization that focuses on the entire production insteadof only one department, which is facilitated if the managers are working more crossdepartmental. The conclusions highlighted in other words in particular the importance ofclarity, fairness, consistency, and that theory should be consistent with reality if a sustainableorganization is to be achieved.

Abstract:
The objective of the present study was to investigate the influence of preschool learning environments on the frequency of prosocial behaviors. The analyses were conducted according to gender, age, and whether the activity was child-chosen or teacher-imposed. The behaviors for analysis included responding prosocially to verbal massages from other children, engaging in cooperative play, attending to cries and pleas of others, and commenting on behavior of others when potentially dangerous. The data were gathered through nonparticipant observations, teacher interviews, and a behavior checklist. Nonparametric statistical analyses were used to analyze the data. Results indicated that older girls were more likely to exhibit prosocial behaviors than all boys regardless of learning center, and younger boys were more likely to increase prosocial behaviors during teacher-imposed activities than any other group. In addition, the art center had a significantly higher mean number of prosocial acts than other centers. The findings yielded an archive of direct social behavior observations across situations and over repeated occasions. The research method allowed me to investigate the natural organization of the children's behavior without the usual reliance on self reports and tester-created situations. Based on these results, the researcher offered theoretical propositions for future research to test the relationship between preschool learning environments and prosocial behaviors.

Abstract:

The purpose of the study was to determine whether there were associations between hospital costs and hospital size, hospital location, hospital ownership type, and Group Purchasing Organization (GPO) participation. The 2008 American Hospital Association annual survey responses were used as the instrument for a retrospective secondary study. Analyzing results from the various tests employed in this study showed there was a statistically significant association between hospital costs and hospital size. There were statistically significant differences between the means when comparing cost with hospital location and ownership type. There was not an association between hospital costs and GPO participation, likely as a result of the unadjusted cost metric used. Further research using a time series approach would help determine the true association of GPO participation. Expanding the criteria to identify whether the hospitals participate in a regional alliance may also return different results relative to cost and GPO participation.

Full text
Abstract:
Objective This research explored the experience of self-compassion in women with eating difficulties who completed an eight-week compassionate mind training group. Background Research that examines self-compassion has mainly focused on the general population and the methods utilised mainly involve quantitative methodologies, such as questionnaires or surveys. Therefore, it appeared important to conduct this research by exploring participants’ lived experiences. Methods To collect data, semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven women between the ages of 25 and 51 years old. All participants were fluent in English and they had participated in the therapy group one to three years prior to taking part in this research. Results During the analysis stage four superordinate themes were developed: “A Whole New World – Journey towards discovering and describing self-compassion”, “It’s a Long Way To The Top – Journey towards finding self compassion”, “Journey For Life – Journey towards integrating self-compassion in life” and “A Trouble Shared Is a Trouble Halved – The experience of being in therapy group”. Each of these themes encompasses three sub-themes. The analysis of the data represents my understanding and interpretation of the participants’ lived experiences. Conclusion These themes were further discussed in relation to the literature and attempts were made to explore how compassionate mind therapy could be introduced in the treatment of eating disorders. The findings of this study provide some insight for Counselling Psychologists and other mental health practitioners that work with individuals suffering with eating disorders.

Abstract:
Effectiveness and performance in groups are largely dependent on how group members manage to share their individual knowledge with each other. When group members share and combine their individual knowledge at an optimal level in order to find new solutions, they achieve knowledge integration. In this thesis, we examine how group leaders act to encourage knowledge integration. An observational study was used to evaluate how leaders in three different groups act when solving a group task. We focused on the leaders’ actions in relation to group behaviours that would promote and prevent knowledge integration. With support from theories, we created a behaviour model to help us identify a set of relevant behaviours. We also supported our analysis with leadership theories. The results showed us that leaders’ actions were to a great extent dependent on the current followership and dynamics of each group. Another result was that group members who were familiar with one another before entering the group, had more difficulties in adopting behaviours that would promote knowledge integration. This meant that the leader did not come to terms with the leadership in order to promote knowledge integration.

Abstract:
In his 2005 work entitled The Marketing of Rebellion , author Clifford Bob explores the phenomenon of political marketing and its use by insurgent groups struggling to achieve their aims, most often against a central government opposed to their platform. In his book, Bob makes two central arguments: that courting support from non-governmental organizations (NGOs) is central to the success of insurgent groups; and that support is given to insurgent groups from NGOs not because of need, but rather because of political marketing techniques that insurgent groups use to attract that support. Thus, a successful and savvy insurgent group or opposition movement must employ sophisticated political marketing techniques in order to acquire the support they seek, and thus succeed in their struggle.
Using Bob's framework as a model, this paper examines the Mojahedin-e Khalq (MeK) and their use of political marketing techniques, largely in the period of 2001-2006. In existence since 1965, the MeK is Iran's largest opposition group, having been formed to oppose the rule of Shah Reza Pahlavi, and currently opposed to the clerical regime in Tehran. The bulk of the group has been based in Iraq since 1986, and has been confined to their main base, Camp Ashraf, since the U.S.-led invasion that toppled the Ba'ath regime in Iraq in 2003. The MeK aggressively uses political marketing to promote their cause and attract support, and thus the paper examines their strategies, discusses characteristics of the MeK, and ultimately offers a series of explanations as to the outcome of their efforts as they stand in 2006.

Abstract:
International Relations Masters Research Thesis, 2015 University of Witwatersrand
The G8 New Alliance on Food Security and Nutrition (NAFN) is a new, under-researched and rapidly spreading partnership initiative. As the latest attempt to target hunger in Africa by developed countries, it deserves a certain level of scrutiny to decipher the intended development trajectory for African food systems and the possible implications for smallholder farmers, since these smallholders produce more than ninety percent of the continent’s food supply. Food sovereignty provides the ideal lens through which to analyse the New Alliance, being a political economy critique of agro-industrial food systems, as well as a constitutive approach to rights and the building of a grassroots movement and alternative. This research seeks to ascertain how the New Alliance may globalise African agriculture and undermine food sovereignty. An exploratory research design was used, first historicising African globalised agriculture, then decoding the main objectives of the New Alliance, and finally using the African Food Sovereignty Alliance as a case study to critique its translation into African countries’ commitments. The first few predictions of the hypothesis were strongly validated with findings that the New Alliance will result in large-scale investment of land, the commercialisation of the seed industry and an increased use of agro-chemicals and GMOs, increased foreign investment, and monopolisation of agribusiness by MNCs. To a lesser degree, the prediction that it would decrease barriers to trade and increase imports and exports was confirmed; however, there was little evidence that it intends to cut domestic support measures like some previous development programmes. The New Alliance is beyond reform, built on flawed neoliberal assumptions about development. This and further research could contribute to a movement to abolish the New Alliance before it induces negative long term effects, and to warn off other African countries contemplating this initiative.

Most, if not all, groups as well as major commercial concerns existing in South Africa today, begin through the actions of one man, or a small group of people. These people were usually wealthy investors, who had the purpose of profit in mind, but nonetheless, were responsible for the conglomerates now active in today's economic world. People such as, Sir Ernest Oppenheimer (Anglo American Corporation) Sir John Patterson (Standard Bank of South Africa) Douglas Murray (Murray & Roberts) and many others, began with an idea, and joined by a small group, rose from humble beginnings and formed the major corporations we know today. To be able to expand to the size of today's big companies, more and more people were required to staff the work stations and start up the subsidiary companies and head office divisions that today comprise the holding companies listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. This is not just a historical event, but the same process is continuing on an ever increasing rate in the modern commercial climate.

Abstract:
The HIV/AIDS pandemic has implications at every level of social functioning. It affects individuals, families, communities and organisations. The burden of caring for those exposed, affected and infected is vast, but one of the most significant developments which have the potential to reduce disease burden is antiretroviral therapy. Antiretroviral therapy (ART) is complex and difficult to administer, and requires a learning process which is mediated through a number of means. Vygotskian theory was utilised to better understand the process of adherence through mediated learning, and as a framework for explaining compliance. In this study, mediated learning occurs both in the context of the clinic staff and the clinic attendees, and the caregivers and the child. Therefore Vygotsky‟s theory offers useful insight into this process. This qualitative study aimed to research the factors which contribute to ART adherence in a small sample of HIV positive children who are attending a local clinic. Eight child-caregiver dyads were interviewed, and drawings utilised to better understand child and caregiver factors which contribute to compliance. There were a number of psychosocial factors identified which contribute to compliance, or lack thereof, including social support, stigma, medication fatigue, disclosure, access difficulties, psychoeducation, and motivation. A number of qualitative differences were also identified between children who knew their HIV status and those who did not. These differences emerged primarily through the analysis of the child participants‟ drawings and there appeared to be a number of inter- and intrapersonal benefits to disclosure. The factors identified in this study, if better understood, can inform interventions to improve compliance on ART.

Abstract:
Private saving in the CEE countries can be described as having stabilised over the period of reform. Among the transition variables employed in the study, price liberalisation stands out as the most potent correlate of private saving. This is seen as a direct consequence the gradual removal of the soft budget constraint under the command system and by extension the elimination of involuntary saving. Another remarkable outcome from the GMM model is the positive response of the first lag of private saving which demonstrates persistence of savings in the CEE over the transition period. Tied to this is the strong response of private saving to sound macroeconomic discipline in the CEE countries. This is evidenced in the positive response to key variables like GDP growth and improvements in the terms of trade. Most importantly, the aged dependency ratio is seen as the most consistently strong influence on private saving. This brings to the fore the role of pension reforms in these countries and its impact on public and private funds. This study adopted the method of qualitative research to compare the differences between cells-group churches and non-cells-group churches on the organizational management (organization design, management operation and structural dimensions) and congregational faith attitude (cognition, affection and behavior). The result shows that the organization of the cells-group churches is more complicated than the non-cells-group churches. The job involvement, organization commitment and faith satisfaction of the congregation in the cells-group churches are higher than those of the congregation in the non-cells-group churches. However, the full-time evangelists in the non cells-group churches have a greater influence on the congregation’s faith attitude. For the cells-group churches, in addition to the full-time evangelists, the cells group itself shares an influence on the faith attitude of the congregation. Based on the above findings, this study gives suggestions about the organizational management of cells-group churches.
