The purpose of the thesis is to give an alternative and more efficient method for working with finite groups by constructing finite groups as homomorphic images of progenitors. The method introduced can be applied to all finite groups that possess symmetric generating sets of involutions. This thesis presents a signal representation in terms of operators. The signal is assumed to be an element of a vector space and subject to transformations of operators. Abstract:

In the 1960s French mathematician George de Rham found a relationship between two invariants of knots. He found that there exist representations of the fundamental group of a knot into a group G of upper right triangular matrices in C with determinant one that is described exactly by the roots of the Alexander polynomial. I extended this result to find that the representations of the fundamental group of a link into G are described by the multivariable Alexander polynomial of the link.

The goal of this thesis is to first give an overview of the modern approach, using the paper of A. Vershik and A. Okounkov, to inductively parametrizing all irreducible representations of the symmetric groups. This theory is then used to answer questions concerning to central projections in the group algebra. We index units first by partitions, and then by so called standard tableaux. We also present a new result and discuss future research exploring the connections between this theory and Quantum Information.

First, the set of G-representations of a finitely generated group is described. This set of functions endowed with the compact-open topology will be used to prove some results in combinatorial group theory. Then we will see that the set of SL2( C )-representations may be viewed as an algebraic set. This new structure will allow some more applications in group theory. Finally, we will describe the set of characters of a finitely generated group and we will show that the set of characters associated to SL2( C )-representations also inherits an algebraic set structure.
