Abstract:
AbstractWe present a new analysis of the Galactic structure in the field of Lacerta. The investigation uses precise uvbyβ photometry and the recalculated Hipparcos parallaxes to provide an improved homogeneous distance scale to the main stellar groups in the field. The OB association Lac OB1 (Lac OB1b) is reliably identified as a very compact young group at an average distance of 520 ± 80 pc. The characteristics of the older Lac OB1a group and the open cluster NGC 7243 are extensively studied based on photometric diagrams and the inferred distances. A good agreement between the photometry-derived distances and the recalculated Hipparcos parallaxes is found for the Lac OB1 group, but in general discrepancies still exist for this particular field.

This article presents a study of lace textiles used for clothing in southern Nigeria. The study was conducted with the aim of providing a preliminary morphological categorization and typological classification of the lace textiles. Based on field research conducted in six strategically selected cities of southern Nigeria, the study used a total of 135 lace textile samples available in the region from 1990 and 2016 for its analyses. The study categorized the lace textiles into two morphological classes of handmade lace and machine-made lace. It also classified the machine-made lace into eleven typological groups based on the visual qualities of the laces.

Abstract:
AbstractRates of turnover of oxygen, water and sodium were measured in free-ranging and captive Lacerta viridis in western France during their period of reproduction in May, and again in late autumn prior to their entering winter hibernation. Rates of C02 production and turnover of water and sodium in captive lizards showed little significant variation and these animals appeared to be buffered to a large extent from environmental changes, even though they were exposed to external climatic influences. Overall means for rates of CO2 production in free-ranging individuals did not vary statistically between seasons but considerable individual variation was observed during the breeding season in May. The animals could be divided into 'active' and 'inactive' groups on the basis of their rate of CO2 production and other significant differences were apparent between these two groups: 'active' individuals had increased rates of sodium turnover, lower body water contents and lost body mass during the period of observation whereas the 'inactive' individuals gained mass over the same period. These data suggest that not all individuals necessarily participate in the activity associated with breeding in spring in this species and further behavioural studies would seem appropriate in the light of these physiological data. Calculation of the 'Water Effectiveness Index' for this species from the ratio of water to energy turnover suggests that Lacerta viridis is a profligate utiliser of available resources when compared with similar-sized species of lizards inhabiting desert environments.

Abstract:
AbstractThe diet of Lacerta lepida in the province of León (NW Spain) was studied through the analysis of 286 faecal pellets collected during May-August. Insecta were the numerically most important prey group, and always represented more than 85 % of prey numbers. Coleoptera and Hymenoptera were the dominant orders. Other important prey groups were Heteroptera and Arachnida. The number of Orthoptera consumed increased gradually from May to August. With respect to the occurrence frequency of prey in the faecal pellets, Coleoptera and Hymenoptera occurred in more than 75% at all times. The lowest trophic diversity was detected in june-july. Seasonal changes in the diet were noteworthy within short-terms and augmented in the long-term. The average length of the invertebrate prey was within the interval 9-14 mm. In terms of energy content, Vertebrata (43.82%), Coleoptera (15.77%), Orthoptera (14.40%) and Hymenoptera (13.95%) were the principal groups. L. lepida is considered to be an opportunistic feeder, although some prey groups are apparently selected.

Abstract:
Although Ablepharus kitaibelii and its subspecies are wide-spread, being distributed from the Carpathian Basin through the Balkans to Iraq, their habitat and environmental niche is poorly known. Ablepharus kitaibelii fitzingeri is almost entirely limited to the Carpathian Basin, and is amongst the most strictly protected and least known reptiles of Central and Eastern Europe. The main aim of our study was to determine habitat use preferences of different age groups of A. kitaibelii fitzingeri and Lacerta viridis. The occurrence of green lizard was determined by the abundance of refugia rather than by the naturalness of grasslands. The snake-eyed skink prefers semi-natural grasslands with abundant tussock-forming grass or sedge species, avoiding densely shrubby places. For the first time, we show that woodland mosaics lacking shrubs and temporary grasslands next to forest edges are important for the species. Microhabitat use by snake-eyed skink varies with age group; adults preferring shady edge zones rich in leaf litter and shadier grassland spots provided by woodland mosaics, whereas juveniles were found in natural, more open grasslands far from forest edges and in woodland mosaics with dense shrubby understory. Our results contribute to a better understanding of the ecological needs of A. kitaibelii fitzingeri. Our methodology could be adapted to other species and subspecies of Ablepharus. Based on our results, it is important to reconsider habitat management activities, which should not be limited to shrub control: the main goal should be the development of a diverse habitat structure.

Abstract:
We studied diet composition and prey selection in the lizard Lacerta monticola throughout its activity season. The most important prey groups in terms of numbers were Coleoptera, Diptera, Formicidae, and Araneae. Comparison of diet composition in the adult lizards with estimates of prey availability indicated that lizards exhibited precisely defined patterns of prey selection. Electivities were negative for prey < 3 mm in length and generally positive for larger prey, despite the higher relative abundance of the former group in the environment. Electivity scores for individual prey taxa were positively correlated with their length, and lizards preferentially consumed larger individuals belonging to the taxa containing smaller animals. Relative availability of the four major prey taxa fluctuated considerably throughout the year. In spite of these changes, monthly rates of consumption of Araneae and Diptera remained almost constant. Variations in monthly electivity scores were negatively correlated with relative availability of three (Coleoptera, Diptera, and Araneae) of the four major prey taxa. These results fit the predictions of prey-selection models based on nutrient constraints.

"The nomenclatural status of the nomina of amphibians and reptiles created by Garsault (1764), with a parsimonious solution to an old nomenclatural problem regarding the genus Bufo (Amphibia, Anura), comments on the taxonomy of this genus, and comments on some nomina created by Laurenti (1768)." Abstract:
The nomenclatural consequences of the recent rediscovery of the works of Garsault (1764, 1765, 1767) in amphibians and reptiles are examined in detail. The 13 new nomina of these two groups created by Garsault (1764) distribute in three categories: (1) three of these nomina (Lacertus, Rana viridis, Testudo marina) cause no problem, being just junior synonyms of senior nomina created by Linnaeus (1758); (2) four of them (Bufo, Salamandra, Scincus, Vipera) become the valid nomina of taxa, in replacement of identical nomina created later by Laurenti (1768), thus entailing no change in the nomina of their included species and subspecies but changes in their complete nominal-complexes (including their authors and dates); (3) six of these nomina are here rejected as invalid senior synonyms (Ranetta, Serpens, Lacertus aquatilis, Lacertus terrestris) or homonyms (Lacertus viridis, Testudo terrestris) of nomina in current use, by virtue of Article 23.9.1 of the Code. A very positive result of the rediscovery of these works is that it allows to solve for the best an old nomenclatural problem, concerning the nucleospecies (type-species) of the genus Bufo: whereas the nucleospecies (type-species) of Bufo Laurenti, 1768 is Bufo viridis Laurenti, 1768, we hereby designate Rana bufo Linnaeus, 1758 as nucleospecies of Bufo Garsault, 1764. This case shows that it is sometimes possible, even in complex nomenclatural situations, to solve them through a proper use of the Rules of the Code, without having to appeal to the ICZN for the use of its Plenary-Powers. From a taxonomic point of view, we think the data published so far do not allow currently to stabilise the generic taxonomy of the BUFONIDAE. Pending additional data, we support a conservative attitude, maintaining in the genus Bufo most species traditionally referred to this genus. In particular, we think all Eurasian species of this family, which include several pairs of species known to be able to produce viable adult hybrids, should be kept in this genus, but in three distinct subgenera: Bufo Garsault, 1764 for the group including Bufo bufo (Linnaeus, 1758); Bufotes Rafinesque, 1815 for the group including Bufo viridis (Laurenti, 1768); and Epidalea Cope, 1864 for the group including Bufo calamita (Laurenti, 1768). This survey also allows to discuss the appropriateness of the current Article 11.9.5 dealing with specific trinomina, especially as they appear in Laurenti (1768), and to point again to the need to implement more drastic Rules regarding the conditions required for a nomen being compliant for protection through Article 23.9.1 of the Code.

We mainly consider to establish the transportation cost inequality (TCI ) and to solve the Monge-Kantorovich problem on path space PeG and loop group LeG. An H-distance is defined on PeG and enables us to establish TCI on PeG and generalize this method to the path space over LeG to obtain TCI w. R. T. Uniform distance on LeG. In a Polish space, we define a semigroup and prove it satisfies Hamilton-Jacobi inequality under suitable conditions, then we apply it to establish TCI w. R. T. “Riemannian distance” on LeG. Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
In the first chapter, we introduce an object that generalizes a Hodge structure: a loop Hodge structure. We prove that the datum of a variation of loop Hodge structures is equivalent to the datura of a harmonic bundle, so that one can study harmonic bundles using classical tools of Hodge theory, especially the existence of a period map. In the second chapter, we consider the problem of defining harmonic forms computing the characteristic cohomology of a manifold endowed with an exterior differential system. This is motivated by the example of the period domains, where the exterior differential system is induced by the horizontal distribution

Abstract:
Freely improvised music lacks commonly used mechanisms (e.g., scores, conductors, shared performance practices) that serve to coordinate choices across performers in other musical genres. This chapter analyses problems and solutions of musical coordination in free improvisation through the lens of “path dependence,” an analytic framework used in economics to model situations in which agents perceive a high pay-off to coordinating market choices. Key results in the path-dependence literature are the likelihood of multiple equilibria and “lock-in” to inferior outcomes. The interpersonal skills identified as critical for coordination in free improvisation closely parallel the skills that have been identified by social scientists as essential for high-functioning group behavior in non-musical pursuits. This suggests a pedagogical role for improvisation in enhancing economic and personal well-being with regard to human capital formation and happiness.

Abstract:
American Jewish history as a field of scholarly inquiry takes as its subject-matter the experience of Jews in the United States and places it within the context of both modern Jewish history and the history of the United States. Its practitioners see their intellectual project as inextricably connected to both histories. At the beginning of the twenty-first century the enterprise of American Jewish history enjoys a condition of robust health. By the 1990s American immigration history had generally declined in favour within the ranks of American historians. That Jews, outsiders to American culture upon their arrival in the United States, were able to penetrate barriers and enter the mainstream clashes with the way historians want to see the American past. As a group who craved both economic security and respectability, their story lacks the dramatic punch of resisters and rebels to the American ethos.

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter outlines the social protection policies that Spain has adopted to target Spanish nationals abroad. First, it describes the diaspora infrastructure and the key engagement policies developed in the last years by Spain. Subsequently, the chapter focuses on five social protection policies: unemployment, health care, pensions, family-related benefits, and economic hardship. The findings reveal that Spain has adopted a diaspora strategy that targets different emigrant groups such as exiles of the Civil War and early Francoism and their descendants, Spaniards that emigrated to other European countries during the 1950s and 1960s, and new emigrants that left the country due to the consequences of the financial crisis of 2008. Findings also show that, although Spain has developed a wide array of services to target its diverse diaspora, it still lacks a comprehensive scheme of social protection abroad. Moreover, the results suggest that Spain has adopted a subsidiary social policy strategy abroad that is triggered when the social protection offered by states of reception is lacking.

Full text
Abstract:
AbstractThe concept of surgical margins was born a long time ago but still lacks a univocal and sound understanding. The current biological rationale behind the recommendations on margins management relies on two pillars: (1) the observation that groups of cancer cells can leave the macroscopic tumor and disseminate throughout adjacent tissues with different degrees of aggressiveness; (2) the belief that removal of all (or most of) cancer cells can cure the patient. However, this background is undermined by some pieces of evidence. For instance, it has been proven that tissues surrounding cancer often bear precancerous traits, which means that cutting through non-cancerous tissues does not equate to cut through healthy tissues. The head and neck exquisitely poses a number of challenges in the achievement of negative margins, with special reference to anatomical complexity, high density in relevant structures, and unique histological heterogeneity of cancers. Currently, intraoperative margins evaluation relies on surgeons’ sight, palpation, ability to map tumor extension on imaging, and knowledge of anatomy, with some optical imaging technologies aiding the delineation of the mucosal margins of excision. Frozen sections are currently used to intraoperatively evaluate margins, yet with debate on whether and how this practice should be performed. Future perspectives on improvement of margins control are threefold: research is oriented towards refinements of understanding of cancers local progression, implementation of technologies to intraoperatively render tumor extension, and employment of optical imaging modalities capable of detecting foci of residual tumor in the surgical bed.

Abstract:
Working in groups is beneficial for many complex production jobs as groups can have the cognitive and physical capacity that lacks from individuals. The group learning process is complicated when, in addition to individual learning by doing, the number of workers and knowledge transfer have their effects. Production managers need tools for analyzing and predicting group performance and learning over future production periods. Mathematical learning curve models are one of those tools that managers use, with a few are available for groups. This paper reviews potential group learning curve models for production environments. The models are fitted to data from an assembly experiment consisting of different group sizes and repetitions. The results show that more parameters improve the fit. A qualitative evaluation has been performed to answer how well the models reflect group learning and support decision making in production and how their prediction of data could be improved. The results suggest that the S-shaped model performed the best making it a potential one for describing learning in groups in production environments. The paper also suggests future directions along with this line of research.

Abstract:
This chapter provides an overview of Mario Bava's film Blood and Black Lace (6 donne per l'assassino) in 1964. It mentions critics and commentators of the Blood and Black Lace movie who were spellbound by its fascinating visual analogy that links the opening and final images. It also looks into analyzations of the film that proposes the most disparate interpretations. The chapter discusses Bava's demystifying explanation of his movie in an interview published in 1979, just one year before his death. It talks about the significance of the opening scene of Blood and Black Lace and interprets the connection between the signboard swinging at the beginning, during a rainstorm, and the telephone falling on the ground.

Abstract:
Notwithstanding the central place covered inside organization science and the economic theory of the firm, organization design theory still lacks sound building blocks concerning the effects that some fundamental variables have on workgroup performance. In this chapter a contribution to fill in this gap is given with reference to the relationships between connection modes and performance. In particular, through an agent-based simulation model a number of experiments have been done respect to the moderating role played by group size and task complexity. Results confirm current (but not really scientific) knowledge, and bring forth our understanding of these fundamental (and mostly nonlinear) relationships. Among the main results, it can be underlined that the best combinations between connection modes, task complexity, and workgroup size occur when complex tasks are connected by mutual adaptation and run by a small number of agents, or when less complex tasks are connected by parallel or sequential interdependence and performed by a large number of agents. Moreover, when a modules volume to be worked out is heterogeneous in terms of connection modes between module's tasks, and thus, a multi-mode group should be issued, respect to the corresponding choice of issuing specialized groups there is a general decrease in efficacy.

Abstract:
Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) aims at high-end carriergrade performance but lacks common methodologies for testing Virtual Network Functions (VNFs). Benchmarking VNFs should consider different degrees of freedom instead of the black-box common approaches created for bare metal network functions. We understand such status-quo needs to be altered having basis on the solid ground of extensive and automated experimentation. Since 2015, we have been addressing a role in this scenario, from a position paper to the creation of the draft “Methodology for VNF Benchmarking Automation” in the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) Benchmarking Methodology Working Group (BMWG). This paper tells the tale about this draft in BMWG, associated with the perks of developing an open source reference implementation and academic papers, as the means of the old IETF mantra on running code. The story intends to showcase our experiences in IETF and BMWG, covering technical content (e.g., YANG models) as much as draft reviews on mailing-lists.

Abstract:
Abstract Through experience, designers develop guiding principles, or heuristics, to aid decision-making in familiar design domains. Generalized versions of common design heuristics have been identified across multiple domains and applied by novices to design problems. Previous work leveraged a sample of these common heuristics to assist in an agent-based design process, which typically lacks heuristics. These predefined heuristics were translated into sequences of specifically applied design changes that followed the theme of the heuristic. To overcome the upfront burden, need for human interpretation, and lack of generality of this manual process, this paper presents a methodology that induces frequent heuristic sequences from an existing timeseries design change dataset. Individual induced sequences are then algorithmically grouped based on similarity to form groups that each represent a shared general heuristic. The heuristic induction methodology is applied to data from two human design studies in different design domains. The first dataset, collected from a truss design task, finds a highly similar set of general heuristics used by human designers to that which was hand selected for the previous computational agent study. The second dataset, collected from a cooling system design problem, demonstrates further applicability and generality of the heuristic induction process. Through this heuristic induction technique, designers working in a specified domain can learn from others’ prior problem-solving strategies and use these strategies in their own future design problems.

Abstract:
Clinical practical training is a common practice and a requirement for many medical professions in the U.S.A. This training often lacks in managerial and leadership training, leaving many future practitioners poorly prepared for the challenges and requirements of leadership roles. The complexity of the healthcare system brings about new challenges in terms of leadership, with the development of leadership skills for practicing physicians becoming even more crucial. This study analyzed a sample of students and resident doctors in a psychiatric setting during their clinical rotation. The particularities of the observed emergence of leadership within the scope of multiple theoretical frameworks in the field of leadership were analyzed by calculating the median values of each set of survey responses. The study found that biological sex did not play a significant role in Leader emergence (p=0.74), Followers scored Leaders highly overall, and Leaders showed that they had a solid insight into their own capacities and limitations. Overall, strong leadership qualities were identified across all theoretical frameworks with valuable implications for the development of future leadership training. More research is needed to test this methodology in different medical settings and to identify the most effective type of leadership training for clinical education.

Abstract:
The dissertation at hand deals with definiteness in Selkup. It is investigated how in Selkup – taking the three dialect groups North, Central and South Selkup into account – semantic-pragmatic definiteness is expressed, since the language lacks an explicit grammatical marker (like a definite article) for the expression of definiteness. The analysis is carried out on the basis of existing research literature, elicit data and a corpus, which is composed of 248 texts with 12,828 sentences and 77,443 tokens. In its entirety, Selkup thus shows that demonstratives, possessive associations and the non-possessive use of the possessive suffix of the third person singular are the most important strategies for marking definiteness. All types of references, however, contain large numbers of unmarked noun phrases, showing that context is often the decisive factor in deciding whether a noun phrase is to be interpreted as definite or indefinite.

Abstract:
Complex multi-stage decision making problems often involve uncertainty, for example, regarding demand or processing times. Stochastic constraint programming was proposed as a way to formulate and solve such decision problems, involving arbitrary constraints over both decision and random variables. What stochastic constraint programming still lacks is support for the use of factorized probabilistic models that are popular in the graphical model community. We show how a state-of-the-art probabilistic inference engine can be integrated into standard constraint solvers. The resulting approach searches over the And-Or search tree directly, and we investigate tight bounds on the expected utility objective. This significantly improves search efficiency and outperforms scenario-based methods that ground out the possible worlds.

Abstract:
User-centered product design (UCPD) and especially its methods and tools offer a lot of benefits to product development. By using specific data of the user group or by including them into the design process, systems with better functionality and usability arise. However, including the users in an optimum manner means to include them over the whole product development process, which is costly and often too time-consuming regarding the ever shorter product life cycles. An extensive application of UCPD methods is therefore usually not practical for industry. In order to (1) support the user-centered development process in general and (2) support the selection of appropriate UCPD methods, a multi-channel human-system interaction framework is proposed. It is derived from existing human-computer and human-machine interaction models and further includes additional factors influencing the human-system interaction. However, the framework itself needs further and more detailed elaboration and discussion and currently lacks an allocation of UCPD methods.

Abstract:
In this paper, we present a formal approach to modeling continuous system dynamics in SysML using differential algebraic equations (DAE’s). To support model-based design, the Object Management Group has recently developed the Systems Modeling Language (OMG SysML™). The language is well-suited for modeling many different aspects of large-scale, multidisciplinary engineering projects. It allows systems designers to capture information concerning system requirements, tests, structures, functions, and behaviors. However, SysML lacks explicit support for modeling continuous system dynamics using DAE’s. Such models are important for representing system behavior resulting from energy or signal exchange between system components. We introduce support for modeling system dynamics in the form of a language mapping between SysML and Modelica, an equation-based, object-oriented behavioral simulation language. The bidirectional mapping provides support for creating system dynamics models in SysML that can exist alongside other SysML information models, but that can also be transformed into executable simulations by a Modelica solver. To illustrate the approach, we provide an example SysML model of a hydraulic pump.

Full text
Abstract:
The article deals with the concept of green spaces by highlighting its social benefit to the local community. Green spaces have become an important element in shaping rural and urban public spaces, creating attractive living surrounding, promoting integration, interaction and participation of locals, strengthening their health and enhancing overall wellbeing. Moreover, green spaces are often characterized as public spaces, so the interest in this topic implies that being in or using these spaces influences various social groups in any community. Unfortunately, the emphasis of social benefit of green spaces on the local level still lacks solid grounds in the social science discourse in Lithuania. In view of the above, the research methodology includes both theoretical and empirical research methods, where the following scientific problem is addressed: the ways or forms that the social benefit of green spaces manifests itself in relation to local communities? The aim of the research is to analyse manifestation of social benefit of green spaces to local community. The results of scientific literature analysis and interview with the specialists have provided some common insights such as how social benefit of green spaces can manifest itself on the local level. It has been acknowledged that, in terms of social benefit, green spaces are multifunctional, with their main purpose, however, being satisfaction of the needs of local community needs at the place they live in. Although green spaces are not fitted enough to support active participation, awareness of the variety of existing green spaces may contribute to promotion of various local community activities, interaction between different social groups, and appears as a “social bridge”, influencing overall wellbeing of individuals and community.
