St, Pierre Betsy. "The Use of Experiential Groups in the Training of Group Workers: Student Attitudes and Instructor Participation." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2010. http://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/1277.

Full text
Abstract:
Both the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP) and the Association for Specialists in Group Work (ASGW) require counselor education programs to provide experiential training to group workers (CACREP, 2009; ASGW, 2000). However, no specific models are given to counselor educators to implement the experiential component. Only two research studies have examined the overall structure and type of instructor involvement commonly used in counselor training programs (Anderson & Price, 2001; Merta, Wolfgang, & McNeil, 1993). In addition, researchers have documented ethical concerns in the use of experiential training methods (Davenport, 2004; Furr & Barret, 2000; Riva & Korinek, 2004) including the role of dual relationships, confidentiality, and competency. Student experience of the experiential training is impacted by both the structure of the experiential group and the ethical pitfalls associated with each (Goodrich, 2008). Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine the current models of group work and how the structure of these models impacted student attitudes toward ethical concerns of dual relationships, confidentiality, and competency and overall student experience. Members of the American Counseling Association (ACA) who had graduated with their master's degree in the past five years were asked to respond to the Survey of Student Attitudes and Instructor Participation in Experiential Groups online survey. The findings of this study suggested that the most common group work training model is to have a full-time faculty member both instruct the group work course and facilitate the experiential group. In addition, concern over ethical issues was found to be an important component in student's comfort level and belief that the experiential group was instrumental in their development as a group counselor. These results do not support the findings of Anderson and Price (2001) which suggested a growing trend of group work instructors not being both the facilitator of the experiential group and the instructor of the course. However, the findings do support previous research which indicated that ethical concerns do negatively impact student involvement in the experiential group (Davenport, 2004; Hall, Hall, Harris, Hay, Biddulph, & Duffy, 1999).

SUMMARY „SEPARATE GROUPS OF WORKERS SAFETY AND HEALTH GUARANTEE“ The paper reveals the health and safety guarantee the essence of the concept. Labor law doctrine laid down the principle of unity and differentiation, value, limits on the use of individual categories of workers, which provides for additional safety and health guarantee. Labor laws of such persons are recognized: young people (persons under 18 years of age), pregnant, have recently given birth or are breast-feeding women, the disabled, which leads to additional guarantees for the physiological and / or psychological characteristics. The application of such guarantees only those categories would not ascribable to individuals deemed to be discrimination against the rest. The paper examines the complex national and international statutory health and safety guarantees, compared with the general. Systematic analysis of the Labor Code of the Republic of Lithuania, other legislation granting additional guarantees to young persons, pregnant, have recently given birth or are breast-feeding women and people with disabilities: an employment contract, the contractor at the time - the regulation of labor, leisure time, changing the terms and conditions or changes in working conditions special cases, the transfer of the downtime, as well as the expiry of the contract of employment. Almond, Julie M. "Using Focus Groups to Determine Blue-Collar Workers' Perceptions Regarding Dietary Practices and Cancer Prevention." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/31612.

Full text
Abstract:
Recent nutrition reports conclude that changing dietary practices is a strategic way to reduce cancer rates in the United States. Nutrition recommendations to decrease risk of cancer include reducing fat intake to 30% of total calories, increasing fiber consumption to 20-30 g/day, and increasing fruit and vegetable consumption to five servings daily. However, recent studies suggest that fruit and vegetable consumption decreases with educational and income levels within a population, and that blue-collar workers tend to consume 38-40% of total calories as fat. It is possible that national campaign efforts to change dietary practices are not reaching educationally and economically challenged populations. This research identifies the perceptions of blue-collar workers regarding a link between dietary practices and disease prevention. Six focus groups, three of women and three of men were conducted in urban, suburban, and rural Virginia counties. A total of 66 workers participated, and each group was comprised of 8-16 blue-collar workers 35-65 years of age. Most participants were aware of a link between dietary practices and health. A "healthy person" was described as eating low fat foods, fruits and vegetables, and maintaining a healthy weight. Fatty meat consumption, food processing, and chemical treatment of food were perceived as increasing risk for disease. Few participants were aware of a potential link between diet and cancer. Many contributed risk for cancer to factors beyond their control such as heredity, environmental factors, and the influence of the food industry. Those who had experienced a disease, either themselves or through a loved one expressed a greater sense of urgency to modify their eating habits. Most of those attempting dietary modification were addressing health issues relating to cardiovascular disease. The majority reported consuming less than five servings of fruits and vegetables daily, most often as canned or frozen products. Participants reported receiving nutrition education from non-interactive sources, such as television, newspapers, magazines, and radio, and interactive sources such as health professionals and community programs. Those that mentioned interactive sources were more likely to elaborate on specific information learned. Television segments, newsletters, and worksite programs were selected as the most preferred ways to receive nutrition education. When asked what topics would be most helpful in a newsletter series, people requested information regarding heart disease more frequently than cancer. Health benefits of fruit and vegetable consumption, menus, and recipes were also mentioned. The findings suggest that nutrition education efforts concerning cardiovascular disease have penetrated the blue collar population. Community educators need to broaden messages to include current information regarding the potential link between dietary practices and cancer. Furthermore, 35-65 year olds may exhibit more willingness to change dietary habits through nutrition education due to changes in health among themselves or loved ones.

Leon, Natalie H. "Perceptions of self-help groups for child sexual abuse survivors : an exploratory study amongst mental health workers." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1993. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/13483.

Full text
Abstract:
Includes bibliographical references.
This explorative, qualitative study examines the perceptions of mental health workers about self-help groups with adult survivors of child sexual abuse. Given limited formal mental health services in South Africa, self-help represents one informal alternative which could supplement mental health service provision. The study thus arises from a perspective which values self-help groups and is informed by the urgency of community needs in this area, and takes seriously the idea that it is possible and desirable for mental health care workers to facilitate and foster community support systems. Twenty-two indepth interviews were conducted with a sample of convenience which included eleven clinical psychologists, five psychiatrists, three social workers and three non-professionals and included interviewees from organizations currently engaged in issues relating to child sexual abuse. A semi-structured interview schedule was used and interviews were audio-taped. Interview responses were systematically analysed and common themes extracted around awareness of self-help, perceived benefits and problems of survivor self-help groups and the role of professionals. Main themes have been illustrated by verbatim transcriptions from audiotaped material. Most participants have had limited exposure to self-help groups. Whilst there was openness towards self-help with survivors, caution was expressed about dangers to clients in survivor groups which are not monitored by formally trained and accredited professionals. Selfhelp was considered useful mainly as an adjunct to formal services. Limited knowledge of self-help groups is a major determining factor informing professional perceptions. Recommendations for education of professionals are made in order to promote self-help groups and collaborative professional attitudes.

Neale, Matthew C. "The effects of co-workers' extra-role behaviour on individual task performance and climate perceptions." Queensland University of Technology, 2008. http://eprints.qut.edu.au/16688/.

Full text
Abstract:
Extra-role helping, defined as assisting co-workers with their work tasks, and extra-role voice, defined as arguing for constructive change, are believed to be functional for work groups. However, the mechanisms by which helping and voice might contribute to group effectiveness have not been described in detail, and relatively little empirical research has addressed the effects that helping and voice actually have within groups, or their relationships with outcomes relevant to group effectiveness. I argue that helping and voice will have their most direct and immediate effects on fellow group members, and that these effects may influence the subsequent performance of the group as a whole. I present a cross-level model of task facilitation, which describes the impact that group level helping may have on the task performance of individual group members. I present a cross-level model of climate building, which describes the impact that group level helping and voice may have on the climate perceptions of individual group members. I test hypotheses drawn from these models in three studies. Study one was conducted with 1086 Australian air traffic controllers in 45 groups. The results provided support for the task facilitation mechanism, and showed that group level helping was positively associated with the task performance and effectiveness of individual air traffic controllers. Study two was conducted in an Australian public sector organisation employing over 4000 individuals in 177 groups. The results of this study provided support for the climate building mechanism. Group level helping was positively associated with individual perceptions of affective climate. The effects of group level voice depended on the level of goal clarity within the group. I argued that group members would perceive a greater need for voice when group goal clarity was low, and that under these circumstances, group members would attribute voice behaviour to a genuine desire to benefit the group. Under conditions of high goal clarity, however, group members would not perceive a need for voice, and so the voice behaviours would be attributed to self-serving motives to gain power, influence or resources. Results supported these arguments, with group voice having a negative effect on climate perceptions when goal clarity was high, and a positive effect on climate perceptions when goal clarity was low. In study three I examined the impact of attributions for voice behaviour directly. I conducted an experiment with 69 second year management students. Students were placed in a simulated organisational context by way of a written vignette. The level of co-worker voice and the motives for voice were manipulated within this vignette to form a two by two factorial design in which the level of voice (no voice vs. some voice) was crossed with co-worker motives (self-serving vs. altruistic). Manipulation checks showed that participants attributed the co-worker's behaviour to self serving motives in the self-serving condition, and to altruistic motives in the altruistic condition. The results showed that voice behaviour had a negative impact on climate perceptions when self-serving attributions were made. When altruistic attributions were made, the presence or absence of voice did not influence climate perceptions. The results of the three studies suggest that extra-role helping and voice form important parts of the technical, social and psychological environment in which group members work. Furthermore, this environment can have important effects on the task performance and climate perceptions of group members. To the extent that group effectiveness depends on high levels of individual task performance and positive climate perceptions, these outcomes will influence subsequent group effectiveness. I close by discussing the contribution of the task facilitation and climate building models, and the practical implications of the results obtained within this thesis.

Battle, Kiana. "An analysis of select barriers to grief counseling groups for adolescents by school social workers in Georgia public schools." DigitalCommons@Robert W. Woodruff Library, Atlanta University Center, 2015. http://digitalcommons.auctr.edu/dissertations/3082.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explores select barriers to grief counseling groups for adolescents by Georgia public school social workers. The purpose of this study is to determine if there are select barriers in place in school systems that prevent school social workers from conducting grief counseling groups within the school setting for adolescents. Seventy-five (75) survey participants were selected for this study utilizing non probability convenience sampling from among the participants of the selected Savannah site for the study. The survey participants were composed of school social workers who were members of the state chapter of School Social Workers Association of Georgia (SSWAG) organization, which is the state charter of the larger School Social Workers Association of America (SSWAA) national organization. This study employed a survey questionnaire entitled, A Study of Barriers to Grief Counseling Groups for Adolescents in School, and a four-point continuum Likert scale. The findings of the study indicate that there is no statistical significance between select barriers -- amount of time provided during a school day, administrative support, and social work caseloads — when compared to conducting grief counseling groups. The data indicate that there is no relationship between the select barriers and conducting grief counseling groups. However, responding school social workers agree that grief impacts adolescents and interferes with teaching and learning in school, and that a comfort level with the topic of grief is required in order to conduct grief counseling groups. The overall findings of this study revealed that grief counseling groups are underutilized interventions by Georgia public school social workers, who are members of the School Social Workers Association of Georgia organization. Although Georgia public school social workers recognize the importance of grief counseling groups as effective interventions for adolescents, grief counseling groups are not being conducted at higher percentages by school social workers for adolescents, based on the frequency distribution data.

Lethbridge, Elizabeth Janet. "How public management reform influenced three professional groups - teachers, nurses and social workers - in England during the period 1979-2010." Thesis, University of Greenwich, 2015. http://gala.gre.ac.uk/16001/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the influence of institutional and government policy change, in the form of public management reform, on the professional development of teachers, nurses and social workers, described as 'social service professionals', delivering public services in England between 1979 and 2010. The influence of institutional and government policy changes were assessed through a textual analysis of public policy documents; an analysis of the changing size and structure of the three groups highlighting gender, age and ethnicity; an analysis of training reforms through changing institutional arrangements and course content and: the perceptions of six key informants from trade unions and professional associations which represent these professions. These findings were tested on a consultative group of twelve experts in the field of employment relations in the public sector. This thesis found that there were similarities in the reforms introduced by government throughout this period to these three professional groups, which were characterised by the imposition of increased documentation and record keeping, targets and inspections. The control of the work process decreased, with a reduction of professional autonomy and accompanying reforms to professional training. All three professions have been dominated by women throughout the period and the proportion of men has changed little but they are disproportionately represented in management. The introduction of senior practitioner roles has not resulted in women exerting a stronger control over their profession. For all three groups, there has been a tension between higher education institution (HEIs) providers of training, government and employers as well as a lack of consensus about what constitutes appropriate professional training. This is not necessarily a new phenomenon but public management reforms have intensified it and the introduction of ‘learning on the job’ training will further weaken the role of HEIs in vocational training. One of the criticisms used to justify public service reforms was the apparent insensitivity of public services to the needs of users. Some of the responses by trade union and professional organisations to these attacks on professional autonomy have resulted in the exploration of a concept of democratic professionalism, which aims to strengthen the relationship between professionals and service users, so addressing one of the original criticisms of these professionals. This concept represents a different response to public management reforms which has the potential to address problems of democratic involvement in public services and defend them from government attacks. This thesis has two main original contributions to knowledge: it contributes to research showing how 'social services professionals' have been affected by public management reforms and how they are building a concept of democratic professionalism and; it further develops comparative professional studies.

Full text
Abstract:
Bibliography: leaves 76-82.
This study aims to explore the coping resources that community health workers (CHWs), providing home-based care to people with AIDS (PWAs), draw on in response to stressful work experiences. Furthermore, the study explores whether different coping mechanisms are utilised by health care workers at different points on the burnout continuum. CHWs were selected from a community outreach organisation in Cape Town. A Xhosa version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) was administered to forty-five CHWs. From this group, twelve participants were selected for in-depth interviews, six from both the higher and lower ends of the burnout continuum. Thematic analysis of the interviews indicate that both the High and Low Burnout groups contront similar stressors as a result of going beyond the call of duty, community and familial stigmatisation and working in adverse conditions. In addition, CHWs from both groups have difficulty articulating their emotional needs. The groups differed on the number of HIV/AIDS caseloads, with the High Burnout group treating more PWAs than the Low EE group. Carers also differe in their coping styles: High Burnout participants rely more on emotion-focussed coping, denial and escape avoidance, and appear to have a limited repertoire of coping skills, while Low Burnout participants are more predisposed to using problem-focussed coping with the flexible inclusion of emotion-focused approaches. The study also highlights how the context of care affects coping. Limitations of the present study are discussed, and recommendations made for future research and practice in the field.

Abstract:
This doctoral thesis focuses on an analysis of the heterogeneity of HRM policies experienced by entities, balanced with a desire of homogenization from the Group they belong to.In conglomerate-type groups created from takeovers or from market gains, HRM policies can indeed be heterogeneous. However, the current trend goes towards the homogenization of these policies. This research aims to analyze the dynamics of the homogenization process in three stages. First, we identify the origin of the heterogeneity of HRM policies and the reasons for its maintenance, or, conversely, its homogenization. To do so, we rely on a conceptual framework based on a multiple theory using an analysis grid based on the contingency approach to HR, corporate culture and the contributions of Crozier and Friedberg related to the actor (1977).From an empirical point of view, the research is part of a CIFRE Convention in the Southeast Region of France of the Waste and Environmental Services division of an group dedicated to environmental services. It is based on a qualitative and quantitative methodology by the use of descriptive statistics applied to the analysis of three key policies in HRM: wages, health insurance, and recruitment. It focuses on a little studied group: the workers

Abstract:

There are many children in Sweden today, approximately 200 000, who have parents or a parent that abuses alcohol or other drugs. The aim of this study was to investigate how group leaders in support groups for children with addicted parents relate to this sort of support groups. What are their advantages and disadvantages, according to the group leaders?

The method used was qualitative and the empirical material was collected through group interviews. We have interviewed eight persons who are social workers and the interviews were carried out at three work places. The analysis of the material takes a survey of previous written literature as the point of departure. The theoretical framework was eclectic, combining a child perspective with a holistic approach to the situation of children with addicted parents. The interview material was interpreted with the help of hermeneutic theory. Furthermore, Antonovsky’s salutogenic theory, system theory and theory on social change have been used in the analysis.

The analysis shows that the group leaders’ position is that children that have parents or a parent, who abuse alcohol need support groups. The group leaders of support groups bring up that the most important thing for these children is to have other children that they can talk to and trust. However, it was clearly more difficult for the interviewees to discuss possible disadvantages. Drawing upon a holistic perspective, we argue that one disadvantage is how group leaders see children as individuals instead of seeing the family as a whole and the need to deal with the children’s main problem, their parents’ addiction. We also discuss the fact that it seems as if a case worker with overall responsibility rarely monitors the child’s situation. Drawing upon theories on social change we argue that although support groups may empower children to some extent, support groups cannot in themselves be regarded as a way of creating social change.

Joorst, Genevieve. "Transformational leadership : exploratory study within research and development (R&D) groups / Genevieve Joorst." Thesis, North-West University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/4824.

Full text
Abstract:
This research investigated the leadership style in a research and development (R&D) work unit within a petro-chemical company, using the Full Range Leadership Development Theory as assessed by Multifactor-Leadership-Questionnaire (MLQ). From the literature review conducted, it was concluded that an R&D environment is multi-dimensional and the workforce can be diverse in the field of specialisation and personality characteristics. Subsequently, the literature review also focused on functional diversity and gender differences within technological and/or scientific environments. Descriptive statistics were provided and the data were then statistically analysed. The research results showed a statistical difference in the perception of the frequency of leadership style between manager-leaders and subordinates. Differences in the mean scores of manager-leaders and subordinates found that the manager-leaders overestimated the frequency ratings of their transformational leadership style and the leadership outcomes, while they under-estimated the frequency ratings for transactional and laissez-faire leadership style. This indicates that although the manager-leaders consider themselves as more transformational, the subordinates of this R&D unit view their immediate managers as not displaying ideal levels of transformational leadership behaviours. A self-bias phenomenon may be present where the manager-leaders judge themselves as overly favourable. It is recommended that this be addressed within the organisation. A statistical significant difference was observed in how some male and female employees experienced their manager-leaders' leadership style. The females indicated a higher frequency of laissez-faire leadership style, while some males viewed their manager-leaders as more transformational compared to the female employees. Manager-leaders may need different skills to manage females and in general an increasing awareness of gender bias within the unit may mitigate stereotypical assumptions. No statistically significant differences (p<0, 05) could be found for the total group between functional areas, being scientists versus engineers. It should be noted that the departments consist of predominantly scientists, while only one department showed a mixture of scientists and engineers.

Abstract:
This study aims to explore how social workers and community groups in southern Nigeria understand and interpret women's roles in witchcraft related violence and the implications those views have on the handling of such violence. This topic is of relevance for social work since knowledge about this problem can increase the awareness of violence and its implications when meeting clients that are exposed to it.     The study was conducted with an ethnographical approach using a combination of participant observations, semi structured and un-structured forms of interviews’ and seven focus group discussions. Four of the focus groups consisted of social workers who work with empowerment and advocacy for women and girls in Edo-state. The other three were made up of locals in a suburb of Benin City. In this study, I used Clifford Geertz (1973) interpretive anthropology as a comprehensive theory in analysing the results and the theoretical concepts from Mann Huyng Hurs (2006) theory on stages of Empowerment; an existing social disturbance, Conscientizing, Mobilizing, Maximizing and creating a new order. The results of this study show that understandings and interpretations of women’s role in witchcraft-related violence by the participating social workers and community members influences their views on what is to be considered violence and who are to be considered victims. Their views also influence their containment strategies and approaches on how to handle this violence.

Abstract:
This study examines the ideological orientation of various African-American groups on the question of black liberation. It is an effort to provide an Afrocentric frame of reference for black liberation, from which black social workers can develop appropriate problem solving strategies and techniques to address the African-American condition. The empirical referents for this study is directed by a comparative analysis of data collected from organizational documents of the groups examined and other related secondary data. The major findings suggest that there exist a positive relationship between Black Nationalist oriented groups and the theoretical framework for black liberation. The study concludes that this relationship is significant to social work practice in the African-American community.

Abstract:

Several Swedish studies have suggested that within the group of clients contacting social welfare offices for social assistance, approximately one third are having problems with heavy drinking. The overall aim of the dissertation was to study how social workers approach these problems in single, male clients. That is; are the drinking problems of these clients approached and if they are, when and why does this happen? The subject has been investigated in four studies. In study I (n=66) and II (n=103) social workers were to respond, in a written questionnaire, on how they would act on a hypothetical client described in vignettes. The results from these studies suggest that there is no consensus among social workers of how to act towards the clients drinking problem and that social workers personal values seem to influence their choice of action taken. In study III, data was collected from case files on male single clients in nine municipalities. Case files in which alcohol related notes were present (n=297) were investigated. The results indicate that social workers are more active as regards demands on clients to moderate or stop their alcohol consumption if the clients are able to work, than if they are not. Study IV was based on focus-group interviews in eight municipalities. In each municipality, a work group of social workers dealing with social assistance were interviewed on one occasion. The social workers approach to the client’s problems was described as a mobile point within a two-dimensional system. The legislative dimension concerned the clients’ right to be equally treated versus the right to have their application judged individually with every circumstance considered. The other dimension was related to traditional social work with the client’s integrity versus the need for support and control. The results were contextualised mainly from three aspects, the influence from raised demands on a “knowledge-based” practice, the prerequisites consistent of the specific frames for social work and changes in the public discourse constituting the frame of socially acceptable drinking habits.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to explore the class and consciousness formation in a local setting by also developing and applying a theoretical framework which allow us to study the interaction of locus of class consciousness with the other loci of consciousness formation such as the community and the state. Such an approach is also grounded in the belief that a relational understanding of these processes requires us to take spatial dynamics such as local dependency, spatial fix and fixity and mobility into account. By critically drawing upon historico-geographical materialist approach(es), the thesis attempts at resolving the tensions between &lsquo
locality-wider society&rsquo
and &lsquo
structure-consciousness&rsquo
. By integrating them into a holistic and operational conceptual framework, it investigates the highly complex patterning of relations within urban structured coherences, and their effects upon the class and consciousness formation processes. It is shown that interpenetration of these fields of tension through urban processes is crucial in shaping a backbone for the concrete struggles fought by working class against capital in and of the urban regions. These issues are discussed with reference to two working class neighborhoods in Bursa. The first community, Emek, is an unplanned, illegally built settlement, hosting mostly migrant, and lower-wage earning industrial workers, and the second one, Akpinar, is a planned settlement, composed of low-cost housing cooperatives, symbolizing a higher living standard environment for well-paid, socially secure workers, mostly local in origin. The field research focuses on the relations between &lsquo
the labor market, housing market and local dependency&rsquo
and &lsquo
the strategies between mobility-fixity adopted both on part of capital and labor&rsquo
. The specific character of these strategies also tell us how the patterning of the relations between class, community and state loci of consciousness formation and the formation of local coherences mutually shape one another. It is often assumed in this context that formation of class-based consciousness is hindered by other loci of consciousness such as the community-based one. This study shows that community-based consciousness is itself largely absent in the communities in hand and when community-base is deployed by the local workers it is often strategically employed to get personal benefits. In this sense, the study concludes that the lack of community-based consciousness does not device more effective strategies of formation of class-based consciousness but perhaps another adverse factor in developing class-based consciousness in an environment heavily dominated by individualized form of consciousness.

Abstract:
Background: Syphilis infection has recently resurfaced as a significant public health problem. Although there has been a tremendous amount of research on the epidemiology of syphilis, there has been limited work done to synthesize the extensive body of research and systematically estimate patterns of disease within high-risk groups in the Americas. The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to (1) summarize recent patterns of syphilis infection in North and South America among four high-risk groups (MSM, transgender women, sex workers, and incarcerated individuals) from 1980 to 2016, (2) identify and differentiate regional geographic epidemiologic characteristics, and (3) compare the epidemics of the economically developed countries of North America from the developing countries and public health systems of Latin America and the Caribbean. Methods/design: Primary studies reporting syphilis prevalence and/or incidence in at least one of the four high-risk groups will be identified from Medline/PubMed, Embase, Lilacs, SciELO, The Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Scopus, ProQuest, CINAHL, Clase, and Periódica, as well as "gray" literature sources (conference abstracts, country reports, etc.). Studies published from 1980 through 2016 will be included. Data will be extracted from studies meeting inclusion and exclusion criteria and a random effects meta-analysis of prevalence and incidence estimates will be conducted. Heterogeneity, risk of bias, and publication bias will be assessed. Pooled prevalence and incidence estimates will be calculated for comparisons based on geographic region, risk factors, and time period. Discussion: Our systematic review and meta-analysis aims to contribute to an improved understanding of global epidemiologic patterns of syphilis infection in most-at-risk populations. Through systematic classification of the existing literature, and comparison of disease patterns across regional, temporal and socio-behavioral differences, we hope to improve public health surveillance and improve efforts to control the spread of disease across the Americas. Abstract:
This thesis addresses what is called the biggest occupational health risk of 21st century, namely burnout, the result of chronic stress, from a communicational perspective. We propose that coupled with technicist ideals and information and communication technologies, the efficiency paradigm permeate the competitive practices in business and their organizational discourses; shape the managerial discourses and socio-technical devices in the organization. These discourses and dispositifs, in their turn, influence and structure the interpersonal and intra-personal communications. They colonize the life-worlds of the employees and shape their subjectivities. In this process, communication pathologies and deficiencies may occur and lead to stress and burnout. We have conducted a qualitative research based on Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Fourteen participants from France (seven) and Norway (seven) were chosen as a purposive sample; they have all worked with ICT and experienced burnout. We have shown that the job-related stress factors that are used in the burnout models do not exist independently, but they arise out of stress-inducing communication processes. We have identified three major paradoxes that our participants have experienced: ‘acceleration-deceleration paradox’; ‘intensification-quality paradox’; ‘autonomy-control paradox’. These paradoxes trapped them in a double bind. We have identified two vicious circles: ‘working harder and harder’ and ‘distancing from work’. Entangled in pathological inner dialogues, they lost their self-efficacy beliefs. We have compared our two groups and discovered differences based on the national culture

Abstract:
Thesis (M. Tech. Agriculture) -- Central University of Technology, Free state, 2012
Small-scale and subsistence farmers in general lack knowledge and information as a result of limited personal contact at grassroots level with extension workers. Therefore, the formation of farmer groups needs to be encouraged in most rural areas as tools of extension delivery. The value of farmer groups for quality decision making and generating of new ideas is well known, and therefore, the use of group contact may accelerate capacity building and empowerment to subsistence farmers. The problem under investigation is the effectiveness of farmer groups as tools of extension delivery in Makhuduthamaga in Sekhukhune District. The investigation seeks to establish the factors that influence the effectiveness of the farmer group in Makhuduthamaga local municipality. This study was conducted in the Makhuduthamaga local municipality in Sekhukhune District. Data was gathered through two questionnaires, one for farmers and one for extension workers. The study applied quantitative methodology, cluster sampling and non-probability sampling methods, and used field interviews with structured questionnaires. The study found that there are many stakeholders involved in the formation of farmer groups, such as NGOs, social welfare and extension workers, and the initiation by the different stakeholders has an influence on the development of the groups. Most of the farmer groups were initiated by NGOs, the reason being the financial support offered. The effectiveness of the selected farmer groups on Makhuduthamaga municipality is influenced by group dynamic factors. These factors include group size and gender composition, updating of the constitution, and the frequency of group meetings. The respondents highlighted the fact that there is a poor relationship within the groups, poor leadership, misuse of funds, lack of knowledge and division in the groups. There is a culture of not believing and/or not trusting the local people, and it is difficult to disclose information. The number of extension workers is still small in relation to the size of the farming population to be served. Stakeholders will learn from the study that the formation of farmer groups should serve the interests of the farmers, not of the institutions. The training institutions should base the training of extension workers on the needs of the farmers. The farmers should strive for self-reliance in order to sustain their farming enterprises. Extension workers should be formally trained on group dynamics, because agriculture in rural areas is about people working together. Government should minimise the top down approach and institutionalise the participatory extension approach methodology.

This dissertation analyzes the relationship between popular segments of society - especially the category of domestic workers - with the media, consumerism and beauty. The reason for our choice of domestic workers is because this profession has, simultaneously, many characteristics that allow it to be considered as subaltern: its undervaluation due to hybridizations that come from the times of legal slavery; the current labor laws, very different from the ones regarding other professions; the low income and the mainly feminine character of the profession. Our idea, therefore, is to look at consumers culture - especially the part of it connected to beauty, which comprehends fashion, body and beautifying strategies in general, all of those concepts intimately intertwined with women s history - from the viewpoint of a subaltern group. One of the ways through which consumers culture and hegemonic concepts such as the need for beauty are spread through society is the media, nowadays practically ubiquitous, due to its great accessibility through TV, radio, movies, newspapers, internet, cellphones, graffiti, billboards, waiting rooms etc. Wherever there is a potential consumer to be found, there will be at least one media vehicle. Its ability for content coverage and repetition allows media to be considered a very important intermediator between individuals and the world, becoming a relevant builder and repeater of cultural concepts, which will influence the subjectifying processes in people. In order to investigate this influence, 31 domestic workers in Goiânia were interviewed, with questions about their beauty concepts and their favorite mediatic programs. Both discourses were related to the objective of understanding whether there is a beauty concept carried out by the media, how the domestic workers perceive it, and what are their strategies to comply (or not) to them, assuming that domestic workers may relate to these contents in different ways: by making them their own, by negotiating with them, or even by denying them. That is because it is understood that lower segments of society are in constant relationship with the hegemonic contents, and are therefore co-participants in the forces that build culture day by day.

Abstract:
This thesis analyses the formulation and implementation of economic policy in Brazil during the administrations of Jânio Quadros and João Goulart (1961-1964). The main objective is to understand why the Brazilian government was unable to tackle the countrys most urgent economic problems, such as rising inflation and a mounting balance of payments crisis. To do so, the study explores the way social groups, including entrepreneurs, workers, and representatives of foreign nation states, influenced economic policy outcomes. Making use of a wide range of data from confidential employers reports, labor periodicals and commercial newspapers, through to official government sources from Brazil, the U.K. and U.S. the thesis concludes that interest groups reactions are fundamental to explaining why economic programs failed in the early 1960s. While during the administration of Jânio Quadros employers attitudes played a major role, in the final phase of João Goularts presidency, a great distributional struggle broke out between capital and labor, setting the stage for the collapse of Celso Furtados Three-Year Plan. The findings are of great relevance given scholars general recognition that the inadequacy of the Brazilian government in tackling economic problems had a decisive impact on the fall of democracy in 1964, in turn paving the way for a 21-year military dictatorship.

Abstract:
Bullying at work is a form of violence which consists in prolonged and repeated exposure of workers to offensive and humiliating situations and may be a trigger of psychological distress in many individuals and groups. Literature in the field identifies support groups as an emergent treatment alternative with positive results. This study aimed to qualitatively describe the development of a support group for people who suffered bullying at work in a public university in the South of Brazil. The group was composed of 5 women who took part in 8 meetings during 2014 and 2015. The main results of this intervention provide information about bullying at work, developing new coping strategies and the development of a framework of mutual support among the participants.
Calcraft, Paul Richard Thomas. "The evolution of group traits : modelling natural selection on trait prevalence within and between groups." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2017. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/67214/.

Full text
Abstract:
One of evolution's greatest innovations was group living; indeed, it is fundamental to our daily lives as humans. Yet despite intense theoretical and empirical work, the details of how group living arose and is maintained are poorly understood. A central question in this area concerns the strength of natural selection operating between groups of organisms (group selection) because some think this is key to the evolution of group behaviour. It is, however, challenging to measure natural selection occurring between groups and between the individuals within those groups simultaneously. Consequently, a number of contentious theoretical issues have plagued group selection research for a number of decades, and empirical work on this topic is often misinterpreted. In this thesis, I investigate three biological systems that are candidates for group selection where empirical data is readily available. Using techniques from theoretical and computational biology - simulations, game theory and population genetics - I model evolution occurring at multiple levels simultaneously (multi-level selection), shedding light on the evolution and maintenance of group traits. First, I consider the evolution of a trait - lateralization - at the population- and colony-level in eusocial organisms, which have a reproductive structure that promotes group organisation and cooperation. I provide an evolutionary explanation for the strength of lateralization in colonies of the red wood ant, Formica rufa, as a compromise between intraspecific and predatory interactions. After extending the analysis to involve predators targeting multiple colonies simultaneously, I show that populations should tend towards an equal distribution of left- and right- lateralized colonies, resulting in zero population-level lateralization. This contradicts the established view that sociality should produce strong levels of lateralization at the population level. Second, I study a sub-social spider, Anelosimus studiosus, which is a group-living species that has recently been claimed to exhibit group-level adaptation. I use evolutionary game theory to explain the evolution of colony aggression with individual costs and benefits, providing an alternative to the existing group-level interpretation. The model generates a striking fit to the data without any between-group interactions. Therefore, I conclude that more evidence is needed to infer group-level adaptation in this colonial spider. Third, I study the Solanaceae, a plant family whose breeding system is reported to have undergone species selection - group selection acting on whole species. I investigate the evolution of self-fertilization over the family's phylogenetic history. By integrating an existing phylogeny with models of breeding system evolution at the individual level, I find the average selection pressure - and attendant properties of populations - expected to have characterised the Solanaceae over ~36 million years. In conclusion, I have shown the power of modelling approaches to clarify evolutionary explanations, to question existing interpretations, and to identify experiments that can help researchers identify the true causes of trait evolution.

The multi-functional group phenomenon in organizations is recent and barely understood. Some of these groups use essentially knowledge workers in their activities, and were formed to execute consultancy projects or to develop new products or services. This study identifies and describes factors related to people, groups, projects and context that influence the performance of these knowledge worker consultant groups. These factors were drawn from the present knowledge on workgroups, interviews with consultants and from the author`s professional experience. The results indicate in which factors there is consensus about their influence or not, and in both cases, comments are presented to explain or illustrate the conclusions.

Abstract:
This report discusses different steps of the product development of a new tool belt, for the company Husqvarna Group, to be used by professional forestry workers. From identifying the customers’ needs through field studies and inter-views with different users, to a substantial solution to the problem. The introduction states the purpose of the report, the research questions that this report is discussing, and also the delimitations that have been made. The report is focused on finding a new and better solution than the current one to attaching holsters on the tool belt, but also how detachable braces can be attached to the belt. Husqvarna and their current tool belt, is covered along with the main com-petitors’ tool belts. Then follows a chapter with theoretical background there the QFD method and Pugh’s decision matrix are described which are later used in the report. There is also a description of how the work in the forest is being done and how the tool belt is used. In the method chapter a time plan is established for the project’s different phases. After that the QFD method is used along with a house of quality to identify the customers’ needs and to rank the customers’ requirements and create engineering specifications to make the requirements measureable. The house of quality in-cludes an analysis of the competitors compared to the current tool belt from Husqvarna. A number of different concepts are included to solve the two prob-lems, fastener for holsters and braces are produced and are evaluated against the set requirements with the help of Pugh’s decision matrix. A “proof of concept” prototype is then produced from the final concept. A summary of the opportunities for improvements on the current tool belt is dis-played in the result chapter. There is a presentation of the final concept and the corresponding prototype. The concept for attaching the holsters includes a plastic band with holes that is attached in its lower edge so it can be folded down. Behind the plastic band, and through the holes, flies from the holsters are threaded. The plastic band and the holster flies is then covered and secured by a fabric band that is sewn onto the belt in the upper end and attached to the belt with snap fasteners in the lower end. Finally there is a chapter with conclusions, where the methods and the results are discussed and there are suggestions on how the work should be further continued.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate social workers professional experiences of social services statutory responsibilities to provide advice, support and other help to foster families. Furthermore, the purpose was to analyze what factors and conditions that affects social workers ability to provide adequate support. According to both inter-national and Swedish research foster parents are asking for more support. We became curious about how foster care secretaries in Sweden give support. To get this infor-mation we had three focusgroup interviews with a total of twelve social workers. Our three focusgroups were located in municipalities in southern Sweden. The interviews were transcribed and coded for our results. The theoretical perspective we used were Urie Bronfenbrenner's theory about the ecology of human development and the perspec-tive about risk- and protection factors. The study shows that they have quite few sup-port methods to offer the foster homes and the lack of resources (time, education and economy) and vague guidelines are two factors that affects the social workers ability to provide adequate support. Although social services becomes the deputy parent of the foster child and are one protection factor in the child's life, the social services does not receive much attention in forms of for example further education.

Abstract:
In South Africa, January 2011 was characterised by above average rainfall which resulted in many provinces being flooded. On the 17th of January 2011, the government of South Africa declared the City of Tshwane a National Disaster Area. It is in the city of Tshwane where a hotel was flooded causing great damage and disruption to the lives of the hotel workers. Given the lack of existing research focusing on the social dimensions of natural disasters, this provided an opportunity to study the social impact of the flood on the community of hotel workers at a Pretoria hotel. Four sub-aims were set for the study, which involved an exploration of the strengths that were exhibited, discovered or developed as a result of the flood; investigating the subjective experiences in relation to the flood; exploring the interactional patterns and relationships of the hotel workers; as well as investigating how the leadership of the hotel impacted on the manner in which the hotel workers dealt with the flood. A qualitative methodology, guided by a social constructivist epistemology was adopted as basis for the study. Data was gathered by means of individual semi-structured interviews, semi-structured questionnaires, and a focus group interview with a number of employees at the hotel. The data was subjected to qualitative content and grounded theoretical analysis. Five main themes emerged from the analysis, which include: Emotional responses, which included negative emotions such as shock, fear, frustration and anger, as well as positive emotions such as happiness and appreciation; a variety of interactional patterns and relationships; increased cohesiveness; enhanced leadership, and the development of group resilience.

Sonstegard, M., and James Bitter. "Counseling Children in Groups." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 1998. https://dc.etsu.edu/etsu-works/6044.

Abstract:
To be human is to “live” in groups. The infant is born into a group and does not survive without the care and nurturance of others. Most children have their first group experience in a family, and the influence of that group is both substantial and critical to development (Hart & Risley, 1995). As the child grows, it moves farther and farther out-away from family (parents and siblings) into new and increasingly larger peer groups. Within family and peer groups, children gain language and voice; they create a place for themselves, define their self-worth, and discover what is possible within the boundaries of their lives. The impact of the group on each child is readily observed whenever the child participates within it.

Abstract:

This project served to locate a potential funding source and write a grant to secure funding for a program that provides mental health and psychological treatments, resources and information, and ultimately empowers Latina domestic workers who have survived trauma within and outside their scope of work. The program will be implemented by an MSW with Promotora community leadership. The program consists of a trauma focused intervention group with culturally sensitive and empirically supported curriculum as well as crisis mobilization services for female Latina domestic workers in the city of Los Angeles. If funded, this program will enable social workers and others to be able to advocate successfully and be informed about Latina domestic workers who face specific challenges in their work, including physical and mental health concerns, safety issues, a lack of labor protections, and overall health. Submitting this proposal for funding was not required to successfully complete this project.
