Abstract:
In this paper, we propose a software architecture based on Web services and Software agents for groupware tailorability. Through our literature study, we realize that the property of tailorability has a significant impact on designing collaborative applications. Although online applications in the recent years have been growing exponentially, online collaborative work between users is often supported by software applications that provide static basic functionalities, mostly centered on communication tools (text, audio and video). Hence, adding more sophisticated tools for enriching the collaborative experience, as for example, an integrated environment for task coordination and production, requires manually coding them into the application, which requires a significant effort in order to adapt the system to the real needs of users. In a collaborative context, the application designers are not able to predict all users' needs at design time. To remedy this problem, we propose a tailorable groupware architecture that enables the dynamic integration/composition of services into the collaborative application, gaining both in time and performance. Our work is based on the 3C functional model by Ellis that decomposes collaboration between users into communication, coordination and cooperation spaces. Through our research, we realized that Web services are powerful distributed components offering the desired tools to adapt a groupware to the real needs of users. In this paper, we propose a collaboration protocol based on Web services between machines over the network in order to exchange common services. Based on this protocol, we propose our groupware architecture, U3D, that introduces tailorability in collaboration applications.

Abstract:
This article examines the impact of key information technologies on the future of higher education. Rapid growth and advancement in the areas of telecommunications and human-computer interaction are leading to a fundamental change in how, what, and who we teach at our universities. In the near future, students will be able to “attend” class and exchange ideas with other students without leaving the comfort of their living rooms. Technologies such as computer-mediated communications, electronic publishing, intelligent tutoring systems, groupware, multimedia, intelligent agents, videoconferencing, video-on-demand, and virtual reality are maturing and converging to create “virtual classrooms.” Virtual classrooms free students and faculty from having to be in the same place at the same time, making the traditional four years of campus residency unnecessary. Administrators who ignore the implications of these technological trends risk the very existence of their institutions.

Abstract:
This paper explores the interactions of a groupwork team composed of both local and exchange students, with heterogeneous competence in English, in an English-medium CLIL context at a technical university in Catalonia. Plurilingual and multimodal conversation analysis is used to trace how the students jointly complete an academic task. The research conducted specifically analyses how students categorise themselves and each other in terms of their expertise, and the procedures and resources the students deploy to accomplish the task. The data show that participants’ heterogeneous linguistic repertoires are not an obstacle for successfully completing the task, for constructing subject knowledge, or for establishing a climate of mutual understanding and cooperation. The analysis refers to the tension emerging in the data between the interactional principles of progressivity –actions oriented towards task completion– and intersubjectivity –actions oriented towards resolving communicative difficulties. It also focuses on how co-participants mobilise diverse resources from their communicative repertoires, including plurilingual resources, gesture and material artefacts, in managing the task. The main argument put forward is that in instructional environments in which students are expected to build subject matter knowledge using languages that they are simultaneously learning (e.g. CLIL), considering their whole communicative repertoires as valuable resources for their learning is a promising approach.

Abstract:
The article discusses the features of small unmanned aerial vehicles, perspectives, directions for the development of unmanned aerial vehicles with integrated combat units. The development trends of unmanned aerial vehicles indicate the direction of the use of the unmanned aerial vehicle in the group of small unmanned aerial vehicles operating on the principle of autonomous management. The main problems are related to solving management and groupwork tasks in the group, which leads to the use of group intelligence methods. The possibilities of group use of unmanned aerial vehicles are analyzed. One of the main goals of small drone technology is to create energy sources with high energy capacity and power. The exchange of information within a group of unmanned aerial vehicles requires the use of group-based intelligent methods based on self-organized decentralized management. Such methods are based on the self-organization of movement and communication in a group of insects, fish or birds. The analysis shows that the development trends of small-scale drones are primarily driven by advances in micro and nano technology, new approaches to aerodynamics and management, the creation of high-capacity power supplies and engines, creating autonomous micro and nano systems for navigation and communication using agreed integrated concepts. The direction of new technologies for use in the group of small unmanned aerial vehicles based on the principle of autonomous control is revealed. An algorithm for organizing interaction in a group of unmanned aerial vehicles is presented and the relevant tasks are discussed.

Abstract:
Informal channels for the exchange of information have long been recognised as important (Menzel, 1959; Wilson, 1981; Kuhlthau, 1991; Root, 1988; Kraut and Galegher, 1990). Typical examples of informal information exchange activities are conferring with peers and consultation with a subject librarian (Taylor, 1968; Kuhlthau, 1991; Fox, Hix, Nowell, Brueni, Wafe, Heath and Rao, 1993). If Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) are to become truly user-centred then they must support such informal collaborative activity. The recent interest in knowledge management has, in part, been stimulated by the recognition that valuable information is transferred during informal collaborations (Nonaka & Takeuchi, 1995). To bring some formality to the process organisations are investing in document management software, intranets and groupware technologies (Kiesler, 1997). However, these technologies rely largely on the user actively searching out information and assume that the user can formulate their information needs into an appropriate query. Additionally, such systems tend towards failure in the longer term if users are not motivated in augmenting the knowledge base (Skyrme, 1999).

Abstract:
In this chapter the authors investigate a tool integration perspective to support knowledge management and exchange between Web-based and traditional collaborative environments. In particular they discuss the integration between a tool (CoPe_it!) supporting collaborative argumentation and learning in Webbased communities of practices and a hypermedia and sense making tool (Compendium) acting as a personal and collective knowledge management (KM) system in traditional collaborative environments. The authors describe the tools and drive a comparative analysis of the two groupware by focusing on the general applicability of the tools integration for supporting communities of practices and, more generally, collaborative works. Moreover the authors present the results of a case study in which the tools integration has been applied within a real community of practice. Finally they discuss main results of the tools integration in order to leverage communities of practice to a truly collaborative environment with no communication boundaries.

Abstract:
Abstract An exploratory virtual reality-based groupware architecture is described as a computerized platform for simultaneously addressing qualitative and quantitative factors in layout problems. The motivation is to narrow this gap between the output of a computerized layout design optimization method and its implementation in practice. The steps involved in formulating and modeling the problem and in implementing a solution methodology are outlined. As part of our ongoing research, the groupware is currently designed to take input from a computerized optimization model for layout design and detailed layout design information such as 3-dimensional geometric, topological, graphics (rendering and texture mapping) and motion information. The groupware can have upto four members in a group who can collaboratively interact to manipulate a detailed layout Pairwise exchange and repositioning of individual layout objects are currently considered.
