Germany and all things German have long been the primary concern ofCentral European History(CEH), yet the journal has also been intimately tied to the lands of the former Habsburg monarchy. As the editor stated in the first issue, published in March 1968,CEHemerged “in response to a widespread demand for an American journal devoted to the history of German-speaking Central Europe,” following the demise of theJournal of Central European Affairsin 1964. The Conference Group for Central European History sponsoredCEH, as well as the recently mintedAustrian History Yearbook(AHY). Robert A. Kann, the editor ofAHY, sat on the editorial board ofCEH, whose second issue featured a trenchant review by István Deák of Arthur J. May'sThe Passing of the Habsburg Monarchy, 1914–1918. Abstract:
All the narrators and characters in J. Sheridan Le Fanu's In a Glass Darkly are unreliable impostors. As the title suggests, this is also the case with Arthur Machen's The Three Impostors, which similarly presents a virtual matryoshka of unreliability through a series of impostors. Both texts effect this systematic insistence on social constructedness by using and undermining the specific context of the male homosocial world. What served as the cure-all in the world of Pickwick – the homosocial bond – has here been exported, exposed, and proven flawed. The gothic is out in the open now, and the feared ghost resides without and within the group. The inability of anyone to interpret its signs, communicate its meaning, and rely on one's friends to talk one through it is the horror that cannot be overcome. Part of a larger project on the nineteenth-century ‘tales novel’ that treats the more heterogeneric and less heteronormative Victorian novel, this article examines how In a Glass Darkly and The Three Impostors blur the clear-cut gender division articulated in prior masculine presentations like The Pickwick Papers and feminine reinterpretations such as Cranford. These later texts challenge binaries of sex, speech, genre, and mode in enacting the previously articulated masculine and feminine simultaneously.

In June 1913, on a holiday trip to Paris, George Wyndham died suddenly of a heart attack—he was not quite fifty years old. Shocked by this unexpected loss, colleagues in the Conservative Party and the House of Commons, whose inner circles he had occupied for a quarter of a century, organized the usual tributes. Obituaries laid out Wyndham's pedigree as scion of one of England's more romantic landed families, charted his meteoric rise in the 1890s under Arthur Balfour's patronage, referred briefly and discreetly to his troubled tenure as Irish secretary from 1900–1905, and applauded his versatility as a sportsman and a man of letters. Despite his truncated career, interest in Wyndham did not wane after these first homages. Working through the interruption of war, his family saw that collections of letters and essays, with the 1925 set prefaced by J. W. Mackail's “life,” reached the public. These materials prompted pen portraits and biographies that appeared at regular intervals into the 1970s.A largely sympathetic group of authors, those who wrote about Wyndham faced the interesting challenge of presenting as inspiring and exemplary a life whose disappointments had threatened to outweigh its achievements. The solution they found was one that Wyndham would have accepted, for, indeed, he helped to shape it. In their hands, George Wyndham became a modern Siegfried, the charming, versatile, and disinterested son of an extraordinary ruling class—now, alas, eclipsed—who had guided Britain through two centuries of unprecedented grandeur and prosperity.

Abstract:
Lygodium japonicum (Thunb.) Swartz (Family, Schizaeaceae) is naturally distributed from Asia to Australia and has naturalized in the United States from Texas to the Carolinas and Florida (4). Recently, it has been declared a Category I weed (the most invasive group) by the Florida Exotic Pest Plant Council. A foliar rust fungus was observed on a population of L. japonicum growing under the canopy of a pine/hardwood forest in Gainesville, FL. The lower surfaces of almost all the pinnules (foliage) were covered with cinnamon-brown eruptive pustules. Necrotic areas developed around mature, erupted, and coalesced pustules. Severely infected foliage were wilted and dried. Microscopic observations of the pustules and spore morphology revealed these eruptive structures to be uredinia. The dimensions (24.6 [+ 2.2] × 29.7 [+ 3.5] μm) and morphology (ellipsoid or obovoid, pale cinnamon-brown, and echinulate with indistinct pores) of urediniospore were similar to those reported for Puccinia lygodii (Har.) Arth. (Uredinales) (1). Therefore, the rust was identified as P. lygodii and confirmed by J. Hennen. P. lygodii is native to South America, where it has been recorded from L. volubile and L. venustum (2). This rust was previously identified as Milesia and Uredinopsis spp. on L. japonicum from Louisiana and Florida, respectively (3). Herein, we report the performance of Koch's postulates for P. lygodii on L. japonicum. Excised foliage bearing uredinia from plants collected near Gainesville were placed in a flask, flooded with deionized distilled water, shaken vigorously for a few minutes, and the suspension strained through four layers of cheesecloth. Urediniospores suspended in the filtrate were concentrated to 1.0 × 106 spores/ml, using sedimentation technique, and then misted onto 3-week-old foliage of fully expanded fronds of four juvenile L. japonicum plants grown in pots, until the foliage were completely wet. The plants were then covered with a plastic bag and placed in dappled shade. After 3 days, the bags were removed and the water-filled containers were placed around L. japonicum plants to maintain high ambient humidity. During the remaining 4-week experimental period, the temperature and relative humidity under the shaded areas ranged from 23 to 38°C and 38 to 93%, respectively. The plants were monitored daily for development of symptoms characteristics of P. lygodii. Minute cinnamon-brown flecks appeared on the foliage 20 days after inoculation. Within 3 to 5 days, these flecked areas expanded, erupted, and formed uredinia on the lower surface of the symptomatic foliage. The morphology and size range of the uredinia and urediniospores were the same as those of the P. lygodii applied in this test. This is the first report confirming pathogenicity of P. lygodii on L. japonicum. P. lygodii may be a potential biological control agent of L. japonicum in the Southeast United States. Abstract:
Few international agreements have provoked more controversy among historians than that concluded at Dover, on 22 May 1670, by representatives of the English and French Crowns. Its main provisions were for an offensive war against the Dutch republic of the United Provinces, leading to its destruction as a European power, and for the public profession by the English king, Charles II, of the Roman Catholic faith, which had been regarded by most English people for a hundred years as the bitterest enemy of their own church. The existence of this treaty was concealed not only from the other European states and the subjects of the respective monarchs, but from the greater number of their own ministers. The motives of Charles in making this amazing pact have remained a mystery. In the present century, they have been represented by Sir Keith Feiling as an attempt to unite Catholics and Protestant dissenters as a foundation for a stronger monarchy; by Cyril Hartmann, K. H. D. Haley, David Ogg and Lady Antonia Fraser as a decision to hitch England to the fortunes of Europe's strongest state, France; by Sir Arthur Bryant as a wish to ensure his country a share of the Spanish empire and his throne a dependable group of supporters in the form of the Catholics; by Maurice Lee and J. R. Jones as a grand design to make himself independent of his subjects in general and of parliament in particular; and by John Miller as a desire for vengeance upon the Dutch.

Abstract:
Lygodium microphyllum (Cav.) R.Br. (Old World climbing fern), in the family Schizaeaceae, is one of the most invasive (Category I in Florida) weeds in Florida. It has invaded more than 50,000 ha of wetlands and moist habitats in southern Florida and is rapidly spreading in new areas of the Everglades (3). The search and evaluation of biocontrol agents for this fern is currently in progress. Puccinia lygodii (Har.) Arth. (Uredinales) (1), previously recorded on L. volubile Sw. and L. venustum Sw. in South America (2), attacks foliage and severely damages L. japonicum Thunb. (Japanese climbing fern) vines in northern and central Florida (4). We hypothesized that since L. japonicum occurred mainly in northern and central Florida, P. lygodii did not have opportunity to interact with L. microphyllum, which primarily occurs in southern Florida. Therefore, we used two inoculation methods to test the possible pathogenicity of P. lygodii on the new host, L. microphyllum. Method-I was designed to imitate a seminatural inoculation technique in which three containerized (0.45-L capacity) L. microphyllum test plants (15- to 30-cm-high sporelings) were intermixed among a group of containerized (5.0-L capacity) P. lygodii-infected L. japonicum plants (source of inoculum) in a glasshouse. In Method-II, uredospores obtained from pustules on diseased L. japonicum foliage were adjusted to 1 × 106 uredospores/ml and then misted on three L. microphyllum sporelings (same size as in Method-I) until foliage was completely wet. The plants were then covered individually with a plastic bag for 3 days to facilitate spore germination and infection. In both methods, three L. japonicum sporelings of similar size as L. microphyllum were intermixed among diseased L. japonicum plants as a positive control. All test and infected plants were placed on 6-cm-high trays filled two-thirds with water and exposed to diffused daylight and a temperature range of 20 to 35°C in a glasshouse. These plants were monitored for the development of rust symptoms (halos and rust pustules) development for 8 weeks. Minute cinnamon flakes that developed into eruptive pustules were seen on the lower surface of the pinnules approximately 42 and 28 days after treatment initiation (in both methods) for L. microphyllum and L. japonicum (positive control), respectively. Each method was repeated twice. Dimensions (29.7 [±3.7] × 23.5 [±2.6] μm) and morphology of urediniospores from pustules on inoculated L. microphyllum were similar to those reported for P. lygodii on other host systems (1,2,4). To our knowledge, this is the first report demonstrating the infection of P. lygodii on L. microphyllum. Abstract:
Background:Since the 2015 GRAPPA treatment recommendations were published, therapeutic options and management strategies for psoriatic arthritis (PsA) have advanced considerably.Objectives:The goal of the GRAPPA recommendations update is to develop high quality, evidence-based recommendations for the treatment of PsA, including related conditions and comorbidities.Methods:GRAPPA rheumatologists, dermatologists and patient research partners (PRPs) updated overarching principles for the management of adults with PsA by consensus. Principles considering use of biosimilars and tapering/discontinuing of therapy were added to this update. Systematic literature searches based on data publicly available from three databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane CENTRAL) were conducted from the end of the previous recommendations’ searches through August 2020. Additional abstract searches were performed for conference presentations in 2017-2020. Searches covered PsA treatments (peripheral arthritis, axial arthritis, enthesitis, dactylitis, skin, and nail disease). Additional searches were performed for related conditions (uveitis and IBD) and comorbidities evaluating their impact on safety and treatment outcomes. Individual groups assessed the risk of bias and applied the GRADE system to generate strong or conditional recommendations for therapies within the domain groups and for the management of comorbidities and related conditions. These recommendations were then incorporated into an overall treatment schema.Results:Updated, evidence-based treatment recommendations are shown (Table 1). Since 2015, many new medications have been incorporated. Additional results for older medications, such as methotrexate, have been published across PsA domains. Based on the evidence, the treatment recommendations developed by individual groups were incorporated into the overall schema including principles for management of arthritis, spondylitis, enthesitis, dactylitis, skin, and nail disease in PsA, and associated conditions (Figure 1). Choice of therapy for an individual should ideally address all of the domains that impact on that patient, supporting shared decision making with the patient involved. Additional consideration in the recommendations was given to key associated conditions and comorbidities as these often impact on therapy choice.Conclusion:These GRAPPA treatment recommendations provide up to date, evidence-based guidance to providers who manage and treat adult patients with PsA. Abstract:
Language skills are essential for early childhood, being able to speak clearly and process speech sounds, understand others, express ideas, and interact with others are the building blocks for a child's development. Therefore, this study will examine the effect of the Inside Outside Circle (IOC) instructional strategies with media images on children's language skills. This research is a quasi-experimental design with a posttest only and using a control group. The sample in this study were children in two kindergartens in the village of Banjar Tegal. Data analysis in this study was carried out by quantitative descriptive methods using t-test analysis techniques. The results of this study in kindergarten students in Banjar Tegal Village show that there is an influence of the IOC learning model with picture media on children's language skills (tcount = 6.28> ttable = 2.00). This shows that language skills achieved by groups of children participating in learning with the IOC model with drawing media are better than groups of children who attend learning without the IOC model. The implication is that further research is expected to develop other aspects of child devel- opment through the IOC model. Background:Connective tissue disorders like Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) are multi-organ systemic conditions characterised by disordered immune function. Mycophenolate Mofetil (MMF) is commonly used for treatment of SLE1and other connective tissue disorders like Sjogren’s syndrome, myositis and Scleroderma. Compliance with drugs remains a significant issue in management of these conditions and varying reports from across the world2,3continue to show significant lack of concordance resulting in increased disease activity and damage.Objectives:The aim of this study was to investigate the compliance/concordance specifically with MMF treatment among patients attending clinics at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust (UHCW)with SLE and other connective tissue disorders.Methods:Ethical approval was obtained through research and development department within the Trust. This is a retrospective study collating non-identifiable hospital pharmacy data in patients who requested the prescription for MMF drug between January 2015 and December2018. Since MMF was required to be prescribed from the hospital (i.e. General practitioners within the region were unable to prescribe it), we have records for all prescriptions for these patients. We extracted information on sample size, frequency of prescription requested and length of follow up. Clinical data were obtained from paper and electronic notes of the patients. Data were analysed using the data analysis tool pack for linear regression, on Microsoft Excel package version 16.29.1.Results:We recruited 144 patients into this study, (74%) of these are females. Age range for this group was 2-89 years, median age was 45 (±11.2) years with a mean (±SD) age of 35.6 (±11.2) years and a disease duration of 8.8 (±6.2) years. 73.1% were White British, the remaining included 8.3% Indian, 5.5% Pakistani, 2.7% Black British, 2% Caucasian, 2.1% Chinese, and 6.3% other. Overall, we had 54 patients with SLE and 90 Patients with other connective tissue disorders. Good compliance (81-100%) with MMF therapy was seen in 49 patients, (34%). Poor compliance (0-20%) was seen in 13 patients, (9%). We found a significant correlation between lack of compliance and risk of flares (r= 0.25,p< 0.002), displayed in Figure 1. We also found a significant difference in compliance patters depending on diagnosis and also on age. SLE patients were 34% less compliant with MMF in comparison to other connective tissue disorders. Demographics suggested the degree of compliance increased with age. Patients between 40-69 years of age were 65% more compliant in comparison to the age 20-39 years (p< 0.002).Conclusion:SLE and connective tissue disorder patients within Coventry continue to have issues relating to compliance/concordance with MMF treatment and this appears to be worse in patients with SLE and in the 20-39 years of age. Abstract:
During the 1910s, there was an increasing concerted effort on the part of Canadian artists to create art and literature which would affirm Canada's sense of nationhood and modernity. Although in agreement that Canada desperately required its own culture, the Canadian artistic community was divided on what Canadian culture ought to be. For the majority of Canadian painters, writers, critics and readers, the future of the Canadian arts, especially poetry and painting, lay in Canada's past. These cultural conservatives championed art which mirrored its European and Canadian predecessors. Their domination of the arts left little room for the progressive minority, who rebelled against prevailing artistic standards. In painting, the Group of Seven was one of the first groups to challenge this stranglehold on Canadian culture. The Group waged a protracted and vocal campaign for the advancement of Canadian approaches and subjects. In literature, A. J. M. Smith and F. R. Scott began a similar movement to modernize Canadian poetry and reform critical standards. By examining the poetry, essays, criticism and archival material of these poets and painters, the thesis establishes strong parallels between the modernist campaigns of these two groups and investigates this cross-fertilization between the modern Canadian arts.
