Abstract:
In a recent paper by the authors, growth properties of the Fourier transform on Euclidean space and the Helgason Fourier transform on rank one symmetric spaces of non-compact type were proved and expressed in terms of a modulus of continuity based on spherical means. The methodology employed first proved the result on Euclidean space and then, via a comparison estimate for spherical functions on rank one symmetric spaces to those on Euclidean space, we obtained the results on symmetric spaces. In this note, an analytically simple, yet overlooked refinement of our estimates for spherical Bessel

Abstract:
One research path has been to see whether the type of political regime, namely a democratic versus an authoritarian regime, influences economic growth. Much of the past literature has produced ambiguous results. But more recent studies using more sophisticated statistical techniques have often shown a positive effect of democratization upon economic growth. These studies have made welcome contributions. However, they often fail to examine how the effects of democratization could differ across countries or over time. In my dissertation, I will look more closely at how the effects of democratiza

This thesis explores the role of land reform in the production of space and relations of power in rural South Africa after 1994, based on a case study of a cluster of restitution farms in Makhado municipality in Limpopo province in northern South Africa. It uses Henri Lefebvre's theory of the production of space, which proposes that space is a dynamic social construction and that spatial and social – and hence power - relations are mutually constitutive. Land reform processes are considered using three components of the production of space identified by Lefebvre, namely the material, the conce

In U.S. swine herds, sow removal rates due to death and voluntary and involuntary culling exceed 50% annually. This loss poses an economic problem for producers because the cost of acquiring replacement females is great. Although research has shown that crowding in the nursery has negative impacts on growth, research describing effects of crowding on subsequent reproductive performance and longevity in sows is lacking. This experiment was conducted to determine the impacts of crowding during the nursery phase of production on growth, physiology, and immunology in replacement gilts. Gilts (22.3

Abstract Over the past decade, postgrowth/degrowth debates have seen an increasing uptake in research on regional (economic) development. Against this backdrop, this contribution aims at discussing their ontological, conceptual, and methodological implications for economic geography and beyond. It first situates growth-criticism in the broader context of social and spatial inequalities, food crises, climate change, and environmental justice, before assessing its potential ramifications on prevailing theories, models, and methodological perspectives. This paper presents a growth diagnostic exercise for Peru. It notes that although Peru has recently enjoyed high rates of economic growth, this growth is actually a recovery from a significant and sustained growth collapse that began in the 1970s, caused by a decline in export earnings due to the fall in international prices and an inadequate investment regime in export activities. However, the transformation of the export sector has been surprisingly small: the same activities that declined- mining and energy- are the ones that are leading the current recovery in exports. The authors argue th

Each diagnostic method is judged on whether it: provides a structured way of performing diagnostics; directs analysts towards the right questions; and is efficient in its use of data and resources. After reviewing a variety of methods, we argue that, with respect to growth diagnostics,

This article examines a series of day laborer riots that occurred between 1959 and 1962 in Tokyo's largest day laborer district, Sanya. In doing so, it attempts to understand how local social changes were related to the riots. This paper argues that these riots represent a radical reaction on the part of Sanya's day laborers to the complex macroeconomic changes accompanying the era of high-speed growth. These changes, intimately related to the domestic construction industry, transformed Sanya into a profitable urban space in which capital could be invested and value generated.
