Full textTrollbäcken Elementary School, Tyresö, Stockholm, Sweden Trollbäcken School is an elementary school designed for approximately 700 students, aged 6-15 years. The site is situated in Forunddsparken – a large, much appreciated park and recreational area in Tyresö, Stockholm. The program is divided into five volumes to create a smaller-scale building and to maintain a feeling of a park that is availably and open to everyone. The plans of the five buildings are a bit different from each other, depending on the age of the students. A 6-year-old and a 15-year-old have different types of needs and wants different kinds of learning environments. The building is not supposed to be a wall between the park and the surrounding neighbourhood – it’s a part of both and an attempt to join them. The school aim to enrich the park and provide the visitors with new functions, as well as the park act as a playground and a gigantic schoolyard for the students.

Full textA candidate project for which the starting point has been to design a elementary school in the selected location along an existing program and according to current plans for a school is going to be built on the place in reality. The location is in the northernmost part of Fornuddsparken in Trollbäcken, Tyresö. The difficulties encountered in treating such a place is that it is a sensitive point for lodging in the area who want to preserve the park and not build on it with a school. At the same time, the decision is already taken and you have to take into consideration the park's great recreational value and respect fully integrate the building along the site's conditions with the help of area analysis and location. This project has been of great importance to open up the park and create patios and paths between the buildings but also have a more closed form of the surrounding streets. Another important point has been to divide the school into three different volumes and create two separate volumes to grades and a third volume that has a more public function and should be more of a culture outside school hours where special rooms are bookable.

Full textDuring the schooling years leisure time and the social environment has equal importance as the education for the young student’s development. This statement is examined in this project by studying the spatial relations between the schools functions and the spatial gaps given to leisure activities. In dividing and concentrating different functions in separate buildings can the composition generate a variety of dynamic schoolyards in the area where the student’s unique interests are given space to be fostered, while the given area is being fully exploited. The buildings are being connected using a pergola walkway which creates a communication between the school’s functions. The constructional design was motivated by searching for a unity in expression to uniformity in the divided composition. Thus the pergola was the generating factor for the wooden frame construction used in the buildings. In exploring the use of two elements, a wooden frame together with a brick façade I found an expression which allowed the wooden frame to be experienced both on the outside and inside while covered by the brick façade.

Full textMälarängen is an area between Bredäng och Mälarhöjden that Stockholms Stad aims to develop with the ambition to create integration between the two city areas. Part of this project is a school for year F-6 that will service children of different backgrounds. To facilitate integration, I have created a school that both the children and society can claim ownership over. The classrooms are placed in the curved section of the building, creating a private environment secluded from the rest of the school to create a feeling of belonging and ownership. With the use of a pedagogical corridor, the years are connected and the children are given the opportunity to socialize over the years. There are walls clad with cork along the corridor, where the children can showcase their schoolwork, giving it value and preparing the younger students for the future. The public part of the building is placed along the street and houses facilities that can be rented by the community, such as the canteens and rooms for special subjects. This allows for the school to be opened to the community during evenings and weekends, operating as a meeting ground for people of different backgrounds and facilitating a shared feeling of ownership and belonging. The building also aims to contribute to the wellbeing of its users as well as the environment. Work with healthy and renewable materials has led to a wooden construction of visible glulam pillars and CLT. The roofs are green and the teachers and children ventilate the building naturally with air that has been warmed in a culvert under the building.

Full textThe School The Classrooms The project has evolved from the classrooms, which from an educational point of view are the most important units in a school. As the teachers way of teaching has gone from a lecturing form to more of a coaching form, the demands on the classroom have changed. I have chosen to break the hierarchy of the classical rectangular classroom and instead use the more un-hierarchical square with the dimensions of 8x8 metres. Next to every classroom, that has been given the nicest view in the area – towards the small hill – there is a group room and a terrace. I want to give the teachers the opportunity to give classes outdoors. After School Activities Between the first and the ninth grade in school, a student only has classes for 4 hours a day, the rest of the day is spare time. The after-school activities in Sweden often take place in the classrooms, creating controversy between teachers and after-school pedagogues. I have chosen to give the after-school activity lots of space for the children to play in. Connected to every pillar there is a curtain that can create small rooms in the big room. Connection between city and nature The school is located in the boundary between the oak park, which has been the form giving element in this city area, and the local square. I wanted to design a connection between the urban environment and the nature. The building’s façade towards the oak park is broken down with the terraces creating a low façade that connects to the hill. On the other side, towards the city, the façade is steeper and higher and connects to the built environment. Through the whole building there are sightlines that gives the impression of that you can see what happens on the other side. The Stair The big stair that runs through the building is connected to the terraces facing the park, giving the school a distinct character, but is also working as a metaphor for the educational steps that are taken inside the building. Program The school is designed with a basement and three floors above ground. The school kitchen and the machinery room for ventilation are located in the basement. The big hall is located on the first floor and can be rented out for local events. The kitchen and the dining hall are located behind the stairs, which also works as a stand for spectators enjoying a local event. All the social areas in the building are facing the urban square. The library is located above the dining hall. Also located on the second floor is the staff room. The top floor is dedicated to studios for painting classes.

Full textThe school is situated on the north edge of a big park in Trollbäcken, Tyresö. In the building you find classrooms for preschool to 9th grade, a library, a dining hall, a sports hall and special rooms. The building consists of four rectangular massive volumes. The one in the middle connects the other three, is the highest and opens up with high openings towards the entrances of the whole building. Where the 11meter high middle volume meets the other two or three stories buildings interesting spaces are created, elevated platforms and corners. Entering the school I want it to be clear how to orientate oneself. Because of that all common functions are in direct connection to the central hall. There is a big focus on an open and transparent atmosphere. High windows over the entrances show a clear connection between the outside and the inside. The roof windows are located where the daylight from the side windows do not reach the study places on the elevated platforms. The rooms in the three coloured concrete volumes are more closed than the big open room in the central volume, but they open up with big windows towards the park and outside. That is because I want the classrooms to feel more private and confident than the central hall. The stairs and the elevated platforms make up a transition area from the public open central hall to the more private classrooms.
