Abstract:

Nitzschia shanxiensis nom. nov., stat. nov., described originally from Hunan Province, China as N. sinuata var. constricta Chen & Zhu, was observed from Shanxi and Guizhou Provinces. The morphology of N. shanxiensis is documented by light (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and discussed in detail, including a comparison with the other similar species. Nitzschia shhanxiensis has a constricted middle portion of the valve, fibulae crossing about 1/2 of the valve face, and lacks a central nodule. Cocconeis scutellum var. ornata Grunow (1868) was originally described and illustrated in Grunow (1862) as Rhaphoneis marginata Grunow, and later illustrated by Grunow in Van Heurck (1880). Several further illustrations were produced by diverse authors, i.e., drawings and photographs from light microscopy and more recently using the scanning electron microscope (SEM), yet all done without checking the holotype. The genus Actinella Lewis was studied using planktonic samples from a black water floodplain lake in Central Amazon region. Our analysis of published data and study of new materials on diatom previously attributed in the Russian literature to Thalassiosira bramaputrae (Ehrenberg) Hakansson et Locker have shown that it belongs to other Thalassiosira species, namely T. lacustris (Grunow) Hasle and has wider variability of main morphological features than was specified in its description. The paper presents the description of Seminavis atlantica Garcia, a psammic marine diatom from dissipative sandy beaches from southern Brazil. It is characterized by its convex linear dorsal margin (37 to 50% of its length is in a straight line), linear ventral margin and raphe located very close to the ventral margin. The present work included qualitative study of epiphytic algae on dead and living stems, leaves of the aquatic plant Phragmitesaustralis Trin ex Stand, in Tigris River in AL- Jadria Site in Baghdad during Autumn 2014, Winter 2015, Spring 2015, and Summer 2015.
