Full textA large part of everyday life consists of eating in different social contexts in which choices all the time will be based on how and what to eat. The purpose of this study was to investigate how young people perceive that there is a direct or indirect peer pressure that can affect choice of food in different social contexts, and how peer pressure can look. In the study, five respondents aged 17-25 were interviewed. The results showed that there is a direct peer pressure in form of direct comments on how and what someone eats. The results also showed that an indirect peer pressure comes in different contexts. It hides behind various comments, looks, strange atmosphere, knowledge of how someone else eats, various standards groups, and society's construction of norms and stereotypes. The most central to the choice of food seemed to be how the individual is formed during childhood as well as the codes, norms and regulations that apply in the context of the moment. Furthermore, the results showed that an indirect peer pressure formed during childhood, which is linked to Bourdieu's theory of habitus

Full textA qualitative study has been conducted on three campaign images from the company IQ. The campaign is called “IQ student” and the images are based on the same theme, suggesting that students always finds a reason to drink alcohol. We have used focus group interviews and an interview with IQ as our methods to find out how IQ want the students to interpret the images, and also how the student interpret them. The study is based on theories as reception study, semiotics and social psychology. The analysis of the results has also been set in relation to relevant research in the field of public campaigns and group behavior. Our results demonstrate that IQ wants students to think about their alcohol habits and that they want the students to reduce their consumption of alcohol. The result also shows that students embrace the message as they can relate to it, but it does not come any further. The students think that their drinking is not a problem and therefore they don’t want to change anything about their alcohol habits.

Full textIntroduction The majority of young people use social media to communicate with their friends through photos, chats and forums or to find information. Advertisement and content in social media often portrays gender stereotypes. Many young people feel pressured to live up to the stereotypes and uploads beautified images to mimic ideals. The aim of the study was to describe how the content in social media could influence the self-image of adolescents aged 13-25. Method Scientific articles were found in the databases CINAHL and PubMed. The articles were thematized and five themes emerged through a literature review. Results The five themes that emerged were the effect Peer pressure, Social comparison, Drive for thinness, Training and Food related content had on the self-image among adolescents. Peer pressure could lead to body dissatisfaction. The drive for thinness dominated among girls while the most dominating ideal for boys were a muscular body. Failure to live up to the ideals could lead to depressive symptoms and eating disorders. Discussion Consuming ideal images of men and women could lead to an unrealistic pressure on themselves but it could also serve as motivation.

Full textSelf-destructive behaviour is a more and more occurring phenomenon in today’s society and there are mostly young girls who are affected by this behaviour. There are different explanations to why the phenomenon appears. The purpose of this research essay is to give a literature overview of the phenomenon of self-harming behaviour of young girls. Two research questions have been used to study this phenomenon; How can groups of friends contribute to reinforce an identity with the self-destructive behaviour among young girls? How can Internet contributes to reinforce an identity with the self- estructive behaviour among young girls? For the analysis this research essay uses the social constructive theoretical perspective. The method used in this study is based on systematic searching of relevant literature and research. The findings indicate that groups of friends and the Internet constitute a forum where young people can create and develop their own identity. Therefore these two components can also have an important role in developing an identity with the self-destructive behaviour among young girls especially when they have a tendency to seek help from one another.

Full textAlcohol are commonly used by adolescents and linked with harmful health-related outcomes (e.g. injury, dependence). This study explored young women’s attitudes to alcohol consumption. The choice of young women as a study group was motivated by the fact that young women typically start to consume alcohol at an earlier age than young males in the same age group. The study consisted of two focus groups with a total of nine young women in ninth class from a public school in a small town in the south of Sweden. The result showed that the young women believed that the consumption of alcohol with other young women occurred due to a combination of peer pressure and the effect that parents have on their child. The young women thought that if there were clear rules in the home the children would know what was expected from themselves. The result also showed that a need to be accepted by other peers were believed to constitute an additional important reason behind alcohol consumption. In sum, both previous research and the results of this study converge to indicate that parents' influence on their youth and peer pressure have a major impact on how young people choose to act on various health related life-style choices.

Full textThe aim of this literature study is to research the psychosocial (risk) factors behind juvenile criminality. Researchers in psychological and criminological fields explain that, the underlying factors that lead an adolescent to criminality, need to be analysed through multidimensional lenses, since there are several factors leading to juvenile criminality. Usually, there is more than one factor that leads to juvenile delinquency, nevertheless, researchers claim that a single risk factor can also lead to the development of other factors, hence, leading young people to commit crime. It is also important to highlight that the combination of factors is not identical to every individual. Juvenile criminality is characterised by reactive criminal thinking, therefore, crimes are largely committed impulsively and unplanned. Moreover, other established risk factors are the family circumstances of the adolescent. The probability of adolescents committing crime, increases by 86% when living in an environment that is characterised by a dysfunctional family, dominated by sibling conflicts and unclear hierarchy between parents and children, violence in the home, and parents with drug addictions and psychological instability. Furthermore, it is proven that characteristics, such as, sensation seeking, impulsiveness, aggression, lack of educational motivation and lack of life ambitions, are also risk factors for falling into crime. Additionally, having an ADHD diagnosis has also been shown to be a vulnerability and about every fifth inmate in the Swedish prison system has the diagnosis. Moreover, school absenteeism and failure to study are also associated with an individual's display of violent and criminal behavior. In fact, adolescents who have been 12 months without schooling, show a norm-breaking behavior. Finally, the influence of friends is crucial when the child reaches adolescence. Hence, spending time with someone who commits a crime is a major risk factor for the individual to fall into juvenile delinquency.

Full textRegarding compulsory school staff’s participation in their school’s improvement activity, the area of research is thin, especially regarding research approaches which allows unconditional multidisciplinary findings. To fill this gap this study has been using Grounded Theory, with interviews, focus group interviews and observations, to achieve the purpose of this study, which was to, with an unconditionally approach, provide a new theory from an employee perspective, of employee’s participation in improvement activity, within compulsory school. More specific, this meant investigating the factors that influence compulsory schools staff participation in their work of improvement. It also included examining possible correlations between these factors, as well as how these possible correlations affect compulsory school staff's participation in their improvement activities. The findings showed that prerequisites need to be met to improve the probability of employees participating in work of improvement. The kind of leadership practiced also have great impact. However, employees can develop both negative and positive attitudes towards change if the prerequisites are not met, in part depending of their personality traits, which also determine their needs as well as how they need to be matched up with co-workers. Leaders therefore need to take personality traits into consideration regarding both needs of the employees and team composition. Furthermore, the phenomenon of teamwork has, as the result shows, a greatly positive impact on compulsory school staff’s participation in improvement activities. With these findings this study recognizes established theories and previous research, as valid even within the domain of compulsory school.
