The number of users of the Global System of Mobile Telecommunications (GSM) in the world is growing at an exponential rate; with more than 146 million users in Nigeria alone. There is a continuous need to install GSM supporting infrastructure to take care of increasing users in terms of service delivery. As at December 2013, the number of base transceiver stations (BTS) was 28,289; whereas by projection Nigeria needs additional 33,000 BTSs by 2018. However, there are serious technical challenges militating rapid installation of base stations, such as environmental congestion, high capital expenditure (CAPEX), multiple regulations and taxation, anti- competitive practices among a number of operators. In order to address these challenges, infrastructure sharing has been proposed, and adopted by some GSM operators. This paper presents an overview of GSM infrastructure sharing.

Now a days, Vehicle tracking system plays a major role in our daily life. As the technology grows, vehicle thefts are increasing enormously. This paper proposes to design an embedded system which is used to track and position any vehicle by using Global Positioning System (GPS) and Global system for mobile communication (GSM). This helps in monitoring and reporting the status of the moving Vehicle on demand continuously. So, ATMEGA328 microcontroller is serially interfaced to a GSM Modem and GPS Receiver through serial communication protocol RS 232. In this, driver circuit is used to covert TTL voltages into RS 232 voltage levels. Identifying the position of the remote vehicle is done by GPS modem continuously. The current location details like vehicle longitudes and latitudes of the remote vehicle is sent through GSM modem. The output is acquired from GPS modem and displayed on the LCD display. The same data is transmitted to the mobile at the other end from where the position of the vehicle is demanded. Based on the request placed by the user, the position of the vehicle is automatically sent to the corresponding mobile number. So, this project has been implemented to identify lost vehicle, know the status of moving vehicle from remote location and send the information to the user's mobile number.

Abstract:
The Global Positioning System (GPS) has become one of the state-of-the-art location systems that offers reliable mobile terminal (MT) location estimates. However, there exist situations where GPS is not available, for example, when the MT is used indoors or when the MT is located close to high buildings. In these scenarios, a promising approach is to combine the GPS-measured values with measured values from the Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM), which is known as hybrid localization method. In this paper, three nonlinear filters, namely, an extended Kalman filter, a Rao-Blackwellized unscented Kalman filter, and a modified version of the recently proposed cubature Kalman filter, are proposed that combine pseudoranges from GPS with timing advance and received signal strengths from GSM. The three filters are compared with each other in terms of performance and computational complexity. Posterior Cramér-Rao lower bounds are evaluated in order to assess the theoretical performance. Furthermore, it is investigated how additional GPS reference time information available from GSM influences the performance of the hybrid localization method. Simulation and experimental results show that the proposed hybrid method outperforms the GSM method.

Purpose Until now, air navigation systems have mainly relied on global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) on the worldwide spread global positioning system. However, the so-called GNSS-denied environments open a new research line which pursues the development of alternative technologies which will cover this gap in positioning systems’ services. Design/methodology/approach This paper presents the possibility of using positioning systems based on global system for mobile communications (GSM) signal. This approach developed in a standalone device will provide real-time information. The presented algorithm pursues a new methodology for providing useful information. Findings Among all the different technologies aimed at giving a navigation solution in the absence of any kind of GNSS in which this paper is based, it advocates for the use of the signals of opportunity, particularly the usage of GSM. Practical implications Technology is currently immersed in an era of continuous progress and expansion of navigation systems. These are evolving toward high performance systems, offering precise, efficient and safe air navigation. In addition, the growing demand for unmanned aerial vehicles increases the level of exigency on this activity even more. Therefore, in the context of the development of unmanned navigation technologies, the aim is to implement positioning systems that will allow high precision even in though environments. Originality/value Referencing the SIMless concept, a SIM-free system is described in this paper. The SIM-free system is supported by open data bases and permits the positioning based on the information sniffed from the signals broadcast by a set of several nearby base station of the GSM network. Hence, it provides same and in some cases even better accuracies than the already developed techniques, not being necessary to synchronize the link between the mobile terminal and the base station transceiver (BTS).

Abstract:
The global system for mobile communication (GSM) is planned to meet the needs of the whole subscribers. The number of subscribers increased as the population increased due to the acceptance of GSM services by the subscribers. Thus, there should be a way to monitor base stations that will meet the increasing demand of subscribers in any area as a population surge will lead to more subscriptions. This will allow GSM network operators to serve their subscribers better and ease network congestion. This work presents a review of mobile evolution from the first generation to the fifth generation. A review of global positioning system (GPS) technology and its applications to geographic information systems (GIS) was done. The coordinates of these base stations were taken using a GPS device. These base station coordinates were then exported to QGIS for the design of the map. Thereafter, the output map was then integrated into the website. The discussions on the results followed and some useful suggestions given will go a long way to help the operators of GSM in Nigeria and in general. If the propositions given are adhered to, it will go a long way to help the operators reduce congestion on their network and thereby increase the satisfaction of the subscribers.

Abstract:
The Global Systems for Mobile communications (GSM) is actually the most widespread mobile communication technology existing nowadays. Despite being a mature technology, its introduction dates back to the late eighties, it suffers from several security vulnerabilities, which have been targeted by many attacks aimed to break the underlying communication protocol. Most of these attacks focuses on the A5/1 algorithm used to protect over-the-air communication between the two parties of a phone call. This algorithm has been superseded by new and more secure algorithms. However, it is still in use in the GSM networks as a fallback option, thus still putting at risk the security of the GSM based conversations. The objective of this work is to review some of the most relevant results in this field and discuss their practical feasibility. To this end, we consider not only the contributions coming from the canonical scientific literature but also those that have been proposed in a more informal context, such as during hacker conferences.

Abstract:
P/M/1, which models the service processes of self-similar GPRS packet traffic in GSM standard mobile telecommunication networks, including Pareto and limited Pareto distributions, and fBM/D/1/∝ type single-channel mass service system, which takes into account the self-similarity of this traffic, has been viewed. Development of telecommunication networks. has gone through many different stages of development to the current modern networks, which eventually resulted in a large number of different types of mobile telecommunication networks. One of such networks is GSM (Global system for mobile communication) standard mobile telecommunication networks. In these networks, the directions of rapid development of modern service services are observed recently, one of these directions is the GPRS (General packet radio service) superstructure service, which is considered the superstructure of the GSM mobile network and carries out the transmission of data in packets. Analytical models of these systems are developed based on them Analytical methods have been proposed for evaluating relevant quality of service characteristics such as the relative average waiting time of packets in these systems, average queue length, buffer volume, and packet dwell time in the system. As well as the nature of the dependence of the shape parameter of the Pareto distribution on the Herst parameter was determined based on the experiment.

Abstract:
With the evolution of technology that has occurred in digital systems, new services have appeared that can be applied in railways. Radio communications play an important role in the management of, exploration and maintenance of railway transports. Due to the importance of efficient service delivery and security in railways, there is need to integrate the use of the Global System for Mobile communication and global positioning systems. Transportation is a large and important part of the economy of any country. Railway transportation is one of the main transportation systems worldwide. To this effect, we should have a good and strong monitoring system that can locate a train at every instant. In this research, a proposal has been made for the implementation of a Global Positioning System (GPS) and global system for mobile communication (GSM) based train monitoring system on Tanzania Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) railway network that will enable controllers locate their trains at every instant. The GPS-GSM/GPRS (General Packet Radio System) module will be incorporated in the system. A GSM/GPRS module will transmit the location information to a web server. Every track and locomotive will be assigned a unique number for identification. The information of the train location will be continuously updated when the train is moving and the users will be accessing the information via the web. The updated information will be stored in the web server. Clients will request for particular train status and a designed web application will show the status in a Google map. An alternative radio voice communication system will be incorporated in the locomotives in case of failure on the monitoring system. This implementation will greatly improve service delivery to the company.

Abstract:
The GSM-based electricity meter with an instant billing system is a project designed to provide an efficient and convenient method for monitoring and billing electricity consumption. This system utilizes the Global System for Mobile communication (GSM) technology to enable remote monitoring and control of electricity meters. The main objective of this project is to overcome the limitations of traditional electricity metering systems, such as manual meter reading and delayed billing processes. By integrating GSM technology, the system enables real-time communication between the electricity meter and the utility provider, allowing for instant meter readings and billing calculations. The proposed system consists of three main components: the GSM-based electricity meter, a central server, and a user interface. The GSM-based electricity meter is installed at the consumer's location and is equipped with a GSM module, which enables it to transmit meter readings to the central server. The central server receives the meter readings from multiple electricity meters and performs billing calculations based on predefined tariff rates. The server also stores the consumption data for future reference and generates instant bills for each consumer. These bills can be sent to the consumer's mobile phone via SMS or accessed through a web-based user interface. The user interface provides consumers with access to their consumption data, billing information, and payment options. Consumers can view their current and historical electricity usage, monitor their bills, and make payments through various payment gateways integrated into the system. The GSM-based electricity meter with an instant billing system offers several advantages over traditional metering systems. It eliminates the need for manual meter reading, reduces billing errors and delays, and provides consumers with real-time information about their electricity consumption. Additionally, it enables utility providers to optimize their billing processes and improve overall customer satisfaction.

Abstract:
The present study deals with the development of remote control system based on the Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) technology for switching the low voltage AC power supply system at residential consumer. Function of this system is to disconnect and reconnect the electricity supply to consumers. The introduction of the GSM technology and particularly the use of hand-held mobile phones has brought the innovative distance communication to remote locations. This utilization of this technology for the remote control of systems and appliances will make life easier, safe and quick from anywhere. GSM module was used for receiving short message service (SMS) from user’s mobile phone that automatically enable the controller to take any further action such as to switch on and off the consumer load at the incoming power supply. The system was integrated with microcontroller and GSM network interface using assembly language. AVR Studio 4 software was utilized to accomplish the integration. The system is activated when user sends the SMS to GSM controller circuit at electric meter consumption panel board. Upon receiving the SMS command, the microcontroller unit then automatically controls the incoming power supply by switching on or off the device according to the user command. In other words, the developed system reads message from the mobile phone and responds to control the devices according to the received message. The system can also give feedback to the user to inform the status of switching operation if such command is received.

Abstract:
Method for Evaluation of Outage Probability on Random Access Channel in Mobile Communication Systems In order to access the cell in all mobile communication technologies a so called random-access procedure is used. For example in GSM this is represented by sending the CHANNEL REQUEST message from Mobile Station (MS) to Base Transceiver Station (BTS) which is consequently forwarded as an CHANNEL REQUIRED message to the Base Station Controller (BSC). If the BTS decodes some noise on the Random Access Channel (RACH) as random access by mistake (so- called ‘phantom RACH') then it is a question of pure coincidence which èstablishment cause’ the BTS thinks to have recognized. A typical invalid channel access request or phantom RACH is characterized by an IMMEDIATE ASSIGNMENT procedure (assignment of an SDCCH or TCH) which is not followed by sending an ESTABLISH INDICATION from MS to BTS. In this paper a mathematical model for evaluation of the Power RACH Busy Threshold (RACHBT) in order to guaranty in advance determined outage probability on RACH is described and discussed as well. It focuses on Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) however the obtained results can be generalized on remaining mobile technologies (ie WCDMA and LTE).

We present two time invariant models for Global Systems for Mobile (GSM) position tracking, which describe the movement inx-axis andy-axis simultaneously or separately. We present the time invariant filters as well as the steady state filters: the classical Kalman filter and Lainiotis Filter and the Join Kalman Lainiotis Filter, which consists of the parallel usage of the two classical filters. Various implementations are proposed and compared with respect to their behavior and to their computational burden: all time invariant and steady state filters have the same behavior using both proposed models but have different computational burden. Finally, we propose a Finite Impulse Response (FIR) implementation of the Steady State Kalman, and Lainiotis filters, which does not require previous estimations but requires a well-defined set of previous measurements.

Efficient power amplifiers are essential in portable battery-operated systems such as mobile phones. Also, the power amplifier (PA) is the most power-consuming building block in the transmitter of a portable system. This paper investigates how the efficiency of the power amplifier (which is beneficial for multiple applications in communcation sector) can be improved by increasing the efficiency of switching mode class E power amplifiers for frequencies of 900 MHz and 1800 MHz. The paper tackles modeling, design improvements and verification through simulation for higher efficiencies. This is the continuation of previous work by the authors. These nonlinear power amplifiers can only amplify constant-envelope RF signals without introducing significant distortion. Mobile systems such as Advanced Mobile Phone System (AMPS) and Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) use modulation schemes which generate constant amplitude RF outputs in order to use efficient but nonlinear power amplifiers. Improvements in designs are suggested and higher efficiencies are achieved, to the tune of 67.1% (for 900 MHz) and 67.0% (1800 MHz).

Over the last decades, Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs) have gained much attention due to their various applications in different sections. However, their communication range is limited to utilized communication equipment. Therefore, utilization of GSM channels opens a new prospect towards long distance UAV missions and mobile command and control centers. This paper demonstrates new design and development of a small-scale UAV and a Ground Control Station (GCS) using GSM bidirectional communications for Non-Line of Sight (NLoS) long range control. GCSs are considered the front end node in UAV guidance process. Therefore, the proposed GCS employs a two-layer framework to consider all ground pilot requirements. Moreover, a new exploitation of global weather forecast data is added to the GCS. On the other hand, the proposed airborne system utilizes a new integration of different Commercial off-the-Shelf (COTS) components and excludes short range receivers. The ground and flight tests show that stable bidirectional GSM communication is established, reliable hardware integration is accomplished, real time performance is achieved, GCS functional fidelity is obtained, and low cost is maintained. Abstract:
The need for smart and sustainable communication systems has led to the development of mobile communication networks. In turn, the vast functionalities of the global system of mobile communication (GSM) have resulted in a growing number of subscribers. As the number of users increases, the need for efficient and effective planning of the “limited” frequency spectrum of the GSM is inevitable, particularly in densely-populated areas. As such, there are ongoing discussions about frequency (channel) allocation methods to resolve the challenges of channel allocation, which is a complete NP (Nondeterministic Polynomial time) problem. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for channel allocation which takes into account soft constraints (co-channel interference and adjacent channel interference). By using the Manhattan distance concept, this study shows that the formulation of the algorithm is correct and in line with results in the literature. Hence, the Manhattan distance concept may be useful in other scheduling and optimization problems. Furthermore, this unique concept makes it possible to develop a more sustainable telecommunication system with ease of connectivity among users, even when several subscribers are on a common frequency.

Abstract:
In this paper, we examine a spectrum sharing opportunities over the existing Global System of Mobile Communication (GSM) networks, by identifying the unused channels at a specific time and location. For this purpose, we propose a wideband spectrum sensing mechanism to analyze the status of 51 channels at once, belonging to the 10 MHz bandwidth centered at the frequency 945 MHz, in four different areas. We propose a subspace based spectral estimation mechanism, adapted to deal with real measurements. The process begins with data collection using Secondary User (SU) device enabled with Software Defined Radio (SDR) technology, configured to operate in the GSM band. Obtained samples are used then to feed the sensing mechanism. Spectral analysis is delivered to estimate power density peaks and corresponding frequencies. Decision making phase brings together power thresholding technique and GSM control channel decoding to identify idle and busy channels. Experiments are evaluated using detection and false alarm probabilities emulated via Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves. Obtained performances show better detection accuracy and robustness against variant noise/fading effects, when using our mechanism compared to Energy Detection (ED) based ones as Welch method, and Beamforming based ones as Minimum Variance Distortionless Response (MVDR) method. Occupancy results exhibit considerable potential of secondary use in GSM based primary network.

The sense of vision is essential in life. Blind persons have difficulties navigating both indoors and outdoors. A cane is a very important tool for them. However, using conventional cane is quite hazardous and time-consuming. To navigate safely and successfully, they need a device that is more than just an ordinary cane. In this study, an electronic guidance system that is equipped with both Global Systems for Mobile (GSM) and Global Positioning System (GPS) features had been designed and evaluated. The system is capable of alerting the user of the presence of nearby obstacles along the navigation path. It can give audio signals containing the GPS coordinates and direction details of the user. Through the GSM module, the system can send a message containing the location details of the blind user to a dedicated receiver in cases of emergencies. Experiment results had shown that the designed system can effectively detect obstacles and can efficiently provide the location and direction details. With this system, the travel time of the blind user had been significantly reduced by 21.26 percent.

A cellular mobile radio technology has become an important part of our everyday life as it provides a convenient communication services during user’s mobility. These facilities result in increasing the user numbers of this technology at an extra ordinary rates. Widespread usage of cellular mobile communication systems has generated public concern about the possible environmental, and health effects of human exposure to electromagnetic energy emitted by base stations and cellular phones as an amount of this energy is absorbed by the human body which works as an efficient receiving antenna. This paper discusses the probable health effects of cellular mobile system emissions, and presents two proposed methods to calculate the time of the safe usage of the mobile phones that operate under the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM).

Abstract:
Locating and securing an Alzheimer's patient who is outdoors and in wandering is crucial to an Alzheimer patient safety. Although advances in geo tracking and mobile technology have made locating patients instantly possible, reaching them while in wandering state may take time. However, a social network of caregivers may help shorten the time that it takes to reach and secure a wandering AD patient. This study proposes a new type of intervention based on novel mobile application architecture to form and direct a social support network of caregivers for locating and securing wandering patients as soon as possible. System employs, aside from the conventional tracking mechanism, a wandering detection mechanism, both of which operates through a tracking device installed a Subscriber Identity Module for Global System for Mobile Communications Network GSM . Abstract:
Due to increasing robbery and intrusion, establishing home-security system has become a correlated part of the modern houses, buildings, and offices. As the family members are not at home all the time, the traditional home security system, which makes alarm sound only, may not be efficient enough. Alternatively, Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) based security system can provide higher level of security and convenience compared to the traditionally used systems. The main objective of the current paper is to design and implement cost-efficient and reliable security, safety and home automation system for protection and occupants’ convenience. If any undesired events, such as intrusion, gas leakage and fire occurs in the house, our system warns the homeowner in real-time using Short Message Service (SMS). With the proposed system home appliances can also be controlled in three ways, namely sending SMS from the authorized numbers to the system through GSM network, smartphone app using Bluetooth module and infrared (IR) control using IR module
