Abstract:

"My goal with this project is to digital print a Science Fiction inspired print on fabric that provides an optical illusion with lenticular technology. The fabric will be presented with five curtain drapings, two in motion with motorized movable suspensions. The Print design is going to be created with a science fiction/cyberpunk/transhumanism atmosphere. I’m inspired by the relation between body and machine. The textile field is drawn to smart textiles where the idea of function, artificial intelligence and virtual reality is central. There are already textiles that are designed to react to the wearers needs. And soon it will be possible for the online shopper to purchase customized clothes by recreating themselves as an avatar through 3Dscanning. With this as inspiration my digital print is designed. Technically I will produce a fabric using the lenticular technology that creates an optical illusion. In order to produce the fabric, I need to work with the prints in Photoshop and then digitally print them on fabric. So that the fabric could be able to obtain an optical effect, a lens made of silicone will be laminated on top. The silicone lens is cast in a form which is sketched and made as a model in Rhino and then cut out from a metal block with a milling cutter. The composition will be presented as five curtain drapings. Two of them moves with electric winches. They will hang separately but communicate in a spatial constellation. Like organs the draperies spread out and fall back again. Here, as in the print design, the body and the machine will be crucial. The focus is also on the fabric's tactile character, drama and historical heritage."

New Perspectives on Paul and Marx: William Blake<'>s <&hyphen>œThe Chimney Sweeper<&hyphen> in Songs of Innocence and ExperienceLianna Jean Rose ManibogDepartment of English, BYUMaster of Arts This article explores the function of religion in socio-political spheres. Karl Marx is famously against religion in all its various capacities, arguing that it is a tool used by power structures to control the masses. William Blake, the British poet, is also seen as critical of religion, and because of this his works are often read through a Marxist lens. And yet depictions of Blake as a staunchly anti-religious man don<'>t seem to fit with what we know of him and his works. This article reexamines key texts that deal with the question of how faith and society intersect, particularly reading the works of the Apostle Paul through a Jewish understanding. In doing so, we gain a new understanding of religion as a balancing weight that combats the dangers of the oppressive governments that Marx staunchly opposed.

Ma these de doctorat comporte deux parties independantes, l'une sur la dynamique lithospherique et l'autre, la plus importante, sur certains aspects historiques de la dynamique terrestre. La premiere partie consiste en une etude du mouvement des plaques lithospheriques engendre par les anomalies de masse du manteau liees aux subductions. A partir de cette hypothese, je calcule les mouvements des plaques pour l'epoque actuelle et pour trois periodes depuis 200 millions d'annees et je trouve un bon accord avec les reconstitutions paleographiques. Ce travail est ensuite replace dans un cadre plus general et je donne une synthese fondee sur l'idee que la subduction gouverne et le mouvement et la reorganisation spatiale des plaques. La deuxieme partie de ma these est consacree a l'expose historique et critique de problemes de dynamique terrestre. Ses deux premiers chapitres sont circoncis a deux problemes : les marees oceaniques vues par newton et d. Bernoulli, et la precession des equinoxes de hipparque a d'alembert (mais egalement centre sur newton). Le troisieme chapitre, plus developpe, s'interesse a la question des mouvements seculaires et periodiques de l'axe de rotation de la terre du xvie siecle a l'epoque contemporaine ; il met l'accent sur l'opposition entre les observations geologiques et les calculs des physiciens. Le quatrieme chapitre, de loin le plus important puisqu'il couvre la moitie de la these, aborde le probleme de l'interieur et de la structure de la terre, et des opinions des mecaniciens et des geologues de l'antiquite a nos jours. Il s'agit de comprendre comment on a pu progressivement lever le voile sur les profondeurs du globe. Ce chapitre constitue en quelque sorte une introduction a l'histoire de la discipline dynamique terrestre.

Resumo: A síndrome de Down (SD) é uma aberração cromossômica atribuída à presença de três cópias dos genes localizados no cromossomo 21. Ocorre com uma freqüência estimada de um indivíduo em 600 nascidos vivos e de uma em 150 concepções. Os mecanismos relacionados com a não-disjunção do cromossomo 21 não foram ainda elucidados e embora a idade materna avançada seja um fator de risco, a maioria das crianças com SD nasce de mães com menos de 30 anos. Um mecanismo proposto para explicar a não-disjunção cromossômica consiste na hipometilação do centrômero levando à formação anormal do cinetócoro e ligação anormal dos microtúbulos. Tal mecanismo teria uma etiologia multifatorial e entre os fatores genéticos estariam as variantes polimórficas de enzimas envolvidas no metabolismo do folato. A via bioquímica do folato pode influenciar a estabilidade do DNA de dois modos: o primeiro está relacionado com a função que o folato desempenha na transferência de unidades de 1-carbono para a biosíntese de novo de nucleotídeos. Baixa concentração intracelular de 5, 10-metilenoTHF leva a uma diminuição da síntese de timidilato e a incorporação errônea de dUTP durante a replicação do DNA; o segundo modo envolve a produção de S-adenosilmetionina (SAM), o principal doador de grupos metil para a maioria das reações de metilação, incluindo a metilação CpG. Baixa concentração intracelular de 5,10-metilenoTHF é associado com baixa produção de SAM e conseqüentemente com a hipometilação do DNA. Diante disso, o objetivo do trabalho foi determinar se os polimorfismos MTHFD-1 1958G>A, TCII 776C>G, MTR 2756A>G, MTRR 66 A>G, RFC-1 80G>A e SHMT-1 1420C>T representam fatores de risco para gestações com SD. Para isso foi realizada a técnica de PCR utilizando 200 amostras de DNAs de mães de portadores de SD (MSD) e 340 amostras de DNAs controles seguida por digestão enzimática dos produtos obtidos e análise estatística dos resultados. Comparando a distribuição genotípica no grupo MSD e controle foi observado que o polimorfismo TCII 776C>G apresentou uma diferença estatisticamente significativa: ?2 (2) = 13,10 e p=0,0014. Nossos resultados indicam que mulheres com genótipo heterozigoto para o polimorfismo TCII 776C>G possuem um risco duas vezes maior de gerarem crianças com SD
Abstract: Down syndrome is a chromosome abnormality caused by the presence of three copies of genes located in the chromosome 21. It occurs in an estimated frequency of one out of 600 liveborns and one out of 150 conceptions. The mechanism related to the non-disjunction of the chromosome 21 has not been totally understood and even though the mother's age is a risk factor, most DS children are born to mothers aged less than 30. One mechanism proposed to explain the chromosome non-disjunction is the centromeic hypomethylation that causes abnormal formation of kinetochore and abnormal links of the microtubules. Such a mechanism is thought to have a multifactorial etiology and among the genetic factors are polymorphic variants of enzymes involved in folate metabolism. The biochemical pathway of the folate influnces the DNA stability in two ways: the first is related to the role of folate in one carbon unit transfer during "de novo" synthesis of nucleotides. Low levels of 5, 10-methylenetetrahydrofolate (5, 10-methyleneTHF) lead to a decrease in thymidylate synthesis and the misincorporation of the dUTP during replication of DNA; the second way involves the production of S-adenosyl methionine (SAM), the main donor of methyl to most methylation processes, incluing CpG methylation. Low intracellular 5,10-methyleneTHF is associated with low SAM production and consequently with DNA hypomethylation. Therefore, the purpose of the study was determining if the polymorfisms MTHFD-1 1958G>A, TCII 776C>G, MTR 2756A>G, MTRR 66A>G, RFC-1 80G>A e SHMT-1 1420C>T represent risk factors for DS pregnancies. So we used techniques of PCR followed by restriction enzyme analysis of 200 DNAs of mothers of DS children (MSD) and 340 DNAs of control mothers with statistic analyses of the results. Comparing the genotypic distribution in the groups MSD and control it has been observed that polymorphism TCII 776C>G showed a statistically remarkable difference: ?2 (2) = 13,10 e p=0,0014. Our results show that women that have heterozigote genotype for polymorphism TCII 776C>G have two times higher risk of generating DS children

Abstract:

Presently in the vehicle industry full engine system simulations are performedusing dierent one-dimensional software programs in order to assess the eectof dierent geometrical and part changes on the system as a whole. Thesesimulations are usually fast and multiple parameters can be monitored andanalysed.In this report GT-Power simulations have been performed on a completeengine designed by Volvo Car Corporation. The investigation was performedin order to gain basic knowledge about the internal combustion engine andspecically about the gas exchange system and the turbocharger. A parameterstudy was performed and the responses on the turbine eciency and breaktorque were analysed.The trends in the simulation results follow the background theory well, i.e.increasing the turbine eciency increases the engine eciency and reduces thetime to torque. The eect of the valve opening times and durations on thebreak torque and the turbine eciency can be studied. There is an intricaterelationship where the optimal conguration is dependent on the engine speedas well as the opening angles and times.GT-Power is a very powerful tool for simulating complete engines. Howevercare must be taken when analysing the results. The code only uses one directionand time, meaning that the ow will always be uniform in the cross sections.Whereas in many parts of the real engine the ow eld is three dimensional andfar from uniform in the cross-sections.

The advent of air travel has produced a building typology completely new to the 20th century. The outdated planning of regions for airports render most existing airports as isolated, autonomous instances in the urban environment barricaded by impenetrable walls of highway infrastructure. The current trend sees a steady rise in air travel at Boston's Logan Airport at a time when, globally, new airports are being planned as new airport city typologies which are becoming increasingly complex programmatically. Furthermore, the different modes of accessing the airport along with the various types of sequencing that occurs throughout the process of air travel creates moments of transitions and intersections of narratives and programs. Dziga Vertov's film Man with a Movie Camera and Jacques Tati's Playtime, though cinematically disparate in technique, both commented on the status of entering a new urban modality and experience during their respective times. The project situates itself in that the urban experience in the 21st century resides in that of the airport, where Marc Augé describes as a "non-place," and a product of "Supermodernity." This thesis looks at rethinking the role of the airport terminal at three scales - the urban potential of a new airport city configuration that can increase the value and promote the growth of East Boston, the typological rethinking of relationships between the disparate airport programs and the infrastructure that supports it, and finally, the influence of cinematic techniques for designing through framed views and the scope of vision. It seeks to blur the thresholds between the public edge of the city and the secure site of the airfield - physically, virtually, visually.

Abstract:

Preparation of the root canal system is recognized as being one of the most important stages in root canal treatment. A variety of instrumentation techniques have been described for this stage of root canal treatment. Two recently introduced rotary instrument systems are ProSystem GT™ and GT-Series-X™. The aim of this study is to compare the ability of two nickel- titanium rotary file systems, GT-Series-X™, and ProSystem GT™, to maintain the original canal path using a split-mold design (the endodontic cube). The hypothesis is that ProSystem GT™ will create greater canal center displacement in comparison with GT-Series-X™ files due to more chip spaces and fewer cutting flutes in the latter. Methods: Mesial roots of 31 mandibular first and second molar teeth with separate ML and MB canals and curvatures ranging from 15 to 40 degrees were randomly divided into two groups. After access cavity preparation and working length determination, each tooth was embedded in composite resin using the endodontic cube as a mold. 1.5mm tooth-resin complex slices were made using a Buehler ™ slow speed saw. After reassembly of the sections, canals were instrumented with either GT-Series-X™ or ProSystem GT™ to size 30/06. AutoCAD™ software was used to measure root section images of instrumented canals. Data was analyzed using the t-test (p<0.05). Results: The canal center displacement of the ProSystem GT™ was 0.08 ± 0.074mm while for GT-Series-X™ it was 0.064 ± 0.063mm (p<0.05). Conclusion: Both systems tended to move the original canal toward the furcation, but ProSystem GT™ caused significantly greater canal center displacement.

Tenessee Williams has been famous for depicting women. His women are thus analyzed by critics. Yet, some are stereotyped; the three spinsters, Laura, Alma, and Hannah, are exactly the cases in point. They are stereotyped as innate anachronisms. That is, Laura, a crippled girl, is too shy and fragile to face her reality; Alma, from a spiritual to sensual woman, is too idealistic to live in the coarse world; Hannah, due to her sublimated attributes, is helpful to people around her. Therefore, this thesis argues that the spinsters are not innate, but alienated anachronisms. To indicate the process of their alienation, the thesis explores the extrinsic effect from family, society, and milieu in Chapter One and detects the intrinsic effect on the spinsters in their love relationships in Chapter Two. Through the revelation of the effects, the complexities in the spinsters are also pointed out: Laura seems frgile, yet she alone undertakes her family trouble by finding a husband; Alma, from spirituality to sensuality, serves to meet patriarchal needs; Hannah appears selfless and asexual, but she is in fact deprived of her self and sexuality. By providing the different dimensions of the spinsters, in conclusion, the thesis simultaneously manifests Williams' capability of delineating women characters.

This thesis is to study the roles assigned by society for some important characters to play in <> and <> so as to illuminate that society represses the heroines in both novels through the other characters functioning as social roles and tries to force the heroines back to the traditional roles of women as mother and housekeeper. This thesis is composed of six chapters. Chapter I is designed to define social roles. Chapter II is to show the heroines' failures to play their social roles. In Chapter III, men's social roles as husband and father will be discussed. Chapter IV will focus on the roles of parents and friends and the discussion on the roles of the lovers as expected by society is found in Chapter V. The last chapter is to point out that it is society which makes characters discussed in this thesis its victims.

Artificial superlattices having ferroelectric Ba0.48Sr0.52TiO3(BST) and conductive LaNiO3(LNO) as modulation length were grown epitaxially on Nb-doped SrTiO3 (001) substrates and LNO bottom-layer prepared by dual-gun Radio Frequency magnetron sputtering system. The formation of superlattice structure was confirmed from the x-ray reflectivity curves and SIMS depth profiles and (0 0 L) Bragg reflection of x-ray. A partial but nearly constant relaxation of in-plane strain in the superlattices was observed. From a macroscopic point of view, the strain in the superlattice structure contributes significantly to the dielectric enhancement. These BTO/LNO and BST/LNO artificial superlattices show a significant enhancement of dielectric constant relative to BTO and BST single layers of the same effective thickness. X-ray reflectivity measurement reveals that the superlattices have about the same interface roughness of BST/LNO. Consequently, nearly the same extent of dielectric enhancement results from the strained BST layer, along with a highly conductive interface zone in the superlattiecs.
