Five species of Simuliidae are reported for the first time from the Solomon Islands of Santa Isabel, Malaita, and Makira, and Kolumbangara and Rendova of the New Georgia Island group. One newspecies, Simulium (Gomphostilbia) rhopaloides Craig, Englund & Takaoka, from Guadalcanal is described. The new material consists mainly of immature larvae, which, while allowing assignment to subgenus, do not always allow identification to species. The probability of other new species is suggested. The record for Makira is the most easterly known for the subgenus Morops, as are those for Gomphostilbia

Historical conditions of colonialism, and more recently, the emergence of a post-colonial state and urbanization, have brought about rapid socio-cultural change in the Solomon Islands, characterized by heterogeneity and the influx of new cultural products. Throughout this process, notions of tradition have emerged, iterated largely through the multivocal category of kastom which is fundamentally construed in opposition to notions of Christianity and modernization. From the onset of the colonial era, land reform in Solomon Islands has focused on changing customary landholding arrangements so as to improve productivity and stimulate economic growth. Most land in Melanesia remains under customary tenure, which is broadly communal by nature and cannot be alienated without profound social disruption. Customary land, social relations, livelihoods, power structures, knowledge, identity and place are all inter-related in Melanesian life-worlds. Abstract In the 1970s, the British Solomon Islands Protectorate introduced large scale plantations in the Guadalcanal Plains (Tathimboko) as vehicles for development. The Guadalcanal Plains thus hosted an oil palm industry operated by the UK Commonwealth Development Corporation (CDC) until its closure in 1999 due to the Guadalcanal conflict (1998-2003). After the conflict, oil palm production continued under a new investor, New Britain Palm Oil Limited (NBPOL) and its subsidiary, the Guadalcanal Plains Palm Oil Limited (GPPOL). Abstract After the U.S. landings at Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands in August 1942, the offensives had not stopped. Douglas MacArthur commanded army forces that drove the Japanese from the western Solomons and New Guinea, and then he took aim at the Philippines in September 1944. The Marines had followed a different path toward Japan, capturing scattered Japanese strongholds in an island hopping campaign. That strategy of capturing a few key islands to dominate those surrounding them gave the Americans firm bases to maintain a steady advance through the central Pacific. As MacArthur’s force
