Abstract:
Architectural historiography is seldom concerned with the antithetical notions of ‘noise’ and ‘silence’. In this case study, I tentatively explore the theme in the context of nineteenth-century administrative buildings. More particularly, I investigate the normative views of British and French authors concerning acoustic perception in one subtype of ‘bureaucratic’ architecture: the ministerial office building. Drawing examples from the work of, among others, ‘panopticon’ theorist Jeremy Bentham and the architect Julien Guadet, I point at the centrality of ‘sound control’ or ‘sound management’ in architectural discourses on office buildings. In the specific domain of ministerial offices, moreover, these discourses were rife with ideological views on the nature and the functioning of government itself.

Has conducted research to determine the derivation of quantum guarded command language (qGCL) program for average. Initially calculation of average value was made in guaded command language (GCL) which is then implemented on a digital computer into the Pascal programming language. Furthermore GCL to calculate the average value was analyzed again to be made in the quantum guarded command language (qGCL). qGCL implementation is on a quantum computer is a future computer could perform calculations very quickly because it uses a superposition state is referred to as quantum bits (qubits). Abstract:
The activities of Paul Guadet within the framework of state departments (Civil Buildings and National Palaces, Foreign Affairs Ministry, Postal Services and Technical Education) illustrate a number of the public practices of architecture: along with the conception and management of public building projects and/or their upkeep, the civil servant-architect also had an advisory role and a counselling mission laid down by the civil service that employed him. Investigated in terms of professional skills, knowledge, authority and strategies, the analysis of this role of “expert” requires studying the processes that established the architect’s public career and personal stance, even before his being hired in the public services, but also understanding the interactions between his theoretical conceptions, his architectural production and his involvement with collective bodies, further outlined and exemplified by the confrontation with his fellow architects that occurred at the time

Abstract:

Abstract:
Study of the developement and search for the origins of man-made cavedwellings in the region of guadix. Simultaneous use of diverse investigation methods (ethno-archeology, architectural study, documentational, extensive archeology, stratigraphic soundings, toposeriation of surface ceramics) had allowed a chrono-typology of the manmade caves from the middle ages to the present day, and led to a first periodisation of the evolution of the medieval peopling and habitats of this region. Three main fases have been diferentiated : - before the hight middleage, the cave-dwellings had very little importance, compared to the conventional constructions of the day ; this situation, it seems, did not change after the Arabic invasion during the emirate period. - between the end of the 10th and the middle of the 13th, several models of cliff-caves, of a strongly defensive character, probably of north african origin, seems to have appeared. - the development of an endemic model man-made cave habitat had its beginning in the 13th, particularly in the nasride border area. This model, modified and developed by the Moriscos, after the reconquest, was soon to be adopted by the christians, and led to the "traditional" cave-dwelling of today

_______________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
Leishmaniasis is a neglected disease that affects many countries and is a severe public health problem. The number of cases has been increasing mainly due to Leishmania-HIV co-infection. The clinic forms include tegumentar (cutaneous, diffuse cutaneous and muco-cutaneous leishmaniasis), which affects skin and mucous membrane, and visceral (kala-azar), which affects internal organs. The available therapies include antimony, pentamidine and anphoterin B, which cause serious side effects, as well as resistance cases. Interest in investigating new active molecules with lower toxicity include compounds extracted from vegetal species. Towards this end, we performed a Bank Extract screening against Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis. The hexanic extract of Meliaceae family Guarea kunthiana root wood showed IC100 of 125 µg/mL. The active extract bioguided fractionating in the open silica chromatographic column produced 19 groups (G). The most active were G1 (IC100 = 75 μg/mL), G5 (IC100 = 18,75 μg/mL), G8 (IC100 = 75 μg/mL) and G17 (IC100 = 37.5 μg/mL). Until now, we have promising results for G17. G17 fractionating allowed 22,24–diepoxitirucall-7-en-3-one limoid triterpene isolation, with leishmanicidal potential. This compound was elucidated by spectrometric methods of NMR (1H NMR, 13C NMR, COSY, HSQC, HMBC, NOESY), including Tandem mass spectrometry (EM-EM). To the best of our knowledge, 22,24–diepoxitirucall-7-en-3-one limonoid is unpublished in Guarea spp. and Meliaceae family, nor is there information regarding limonoids action against Leishmania. Thus, 22,24–diepoxitirucall-7-en-3-one limonoid is promising for new studies, towards the identification alternative options for leishmaniasis control.

Abstract:

Archila, Santos Hector Fabio. "Thermo-hydro-mechanically modified cross-laminated Guadua-bamboo panels." Thesis, University of Bath, 2015. https://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.675700.

Full text
Abstract:
Guadua angustifolia Kunth (Guadua) is a bamboo species native to South and Central America that has been widely used for structural applications in small and large-scale buildings, bridges and temporary structures. Currently, its structural use is regulated within seismic resistant building codes in countries such as Peru and Colombia. Nevertheless, Guadua remains a material for vernacular construction associated with high levels of manual labour and structural unpredictability. Guadua buildings are limited to two storeys due to the overall flexibility of the slender and hollow culms and its connection systems. Its axial specific stiffness is comparable to that of steel and hardwoods, but unlike wood, Guadua’s hollow structure and lack of ray cells render it prone to buckling along the grain and to transverse crushing. As a result, Guadua’s mainstream use in construction and transformation into standard sizes or engineered Guadua products is scarce. Therefore, this work focussed on the development of standardised flat industrial structural products from Guadua devising replicable manufacturing technologies and engineering methods to measure and predict their mechanical behaviour. Cross-laminated Guadua panels were developed using thermohydro-mechanically modified and laminated flat Guadua strips glued with a high performance resin. Guadua was subjected to thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) treatments that modified its microstructure and mechanical properties. THM treatment was applied to Guadua with the aim of tackling the difficulties in the fabrication of standardised construction materials and to gain a uniform fibre content profile that facilitated prediction of mechanical properties for structural design. Densified homogenous flat Guadua strips (FGS) were obtained. Elastic properties of FGS were determined in tension, compression and shear using small-clear specimens. These properties were used to predict the structural behaviour of G-XLam panels comprised of three and five layers (G-XLam3 and G-XLam5) by numerical methods. The panels were assumed as multi-layered systems composed of contiguous lamellas with orthotropic axes orientated at 0º and 90º. A finite element (FE) model was developed, and successfully simulated the response of G-XLam3 & 5 panels virtually loaded with the same boundary conditions as the following experimental tests on full-scale panels. G-XLam3 and G-XLam5 were manufactured and their mechanical properties evaluated by testing large specimens in compression, shear and bending. Results from numerical, FE predictions and mechanical testing demonstrated comparable results. Finally, design and manufacturing aspects of the G-XLam panels were discussed and examples of their architectural and structural use in construction applications such as mid-rise buildings, grid shells and vaults are presented. Overall, this research studies THM treatments applied to Guadua in order to produce standardised engineered Guadua products (EGP), and provides guidelines for manufacturing, testing, and for the structural analysis and design with G-XLam panels. These factors are of key importance for the use of Guadua as a mainstream material in construction.

Abstract:
Cross products form a useful modelling tool that allows us to express natural statements such as "elephants are bigger than mice", or, more generally, to define relations that connect every instance in a relation with every instance in another relation. Despite their usefulness, cross products cannot be expressed using existing guarded ontology languages, such as description logics (DLs) and guarded existential rules. The question that comes up is whether cross products are compatible with guarded ontology languages, and, if not, whether there is a way of making them compatible. This has been already studied for DLs, while for guarded existential rules remains unanswered. Our goal is to give an answer to the above question. To this end, we focus on the guarded fragment of first-order logic (which serves as a unifying framework that subsumes many of the aforementioned ontology languages) extended with cross products, and we investigate the standard tasks of satisfiability and query answering. Interestingly, we isolate relevant fragments that are compatible with cross products.
