Abstract:

Abstract:
A presentation of the syntactic domains which contain the grammatical units of different levels is followed by a survey of the parts of speech, with some detail on adverbs and particles. The noun is described from three perspectives: lexical subclasses, grammatical and lexical determiners, and lexical processes of creation of words (derivation, compounding). The description of the verb is organized much in the same way. The chapter devoted to predicate presents all the formal properties common to nouns and verbs when they take the predicative function. The study of complements accounts for the syntax at clause level. Particular attention is paid to mechanisms of valency variation, some of them, already described from a morphological perspective in previous chapters, being revisited here from a relational perspective. There is a contrast, in this language, between the scarcity of mechanisms which derive verbs out of nouns, and the richness and productivity of verb nominalization. This is related to the inherent predicative properties of nouns. The study of the productive derivation of verbs to participial and nominal forms introduces us to one of the more intricated parts of the grammar. The study of complementation accounts for the different kinds of subordination
