Reid, Margaret. "The changing face of Guanyin in East Asian religions." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Religious Studies, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/8363.

Full text
Abstract:
Guanyin occupies a prominent place in East Asian Religions, being honoured in both Buddhist and Taoist temples. This figure, often referred to as the Goddess of Mercy, is frequently depicted as a young barefoot maiden with long dark hair and flowing white robes. Surprisingly, however, this maiden started her career as a masculine bodhisattva. In addition many multi-armed and multi-headed forms of Guanyin can be found in different temples and a profusion of different attributes have appeared over time. This thesis looks at the degree to which other religious figures and cultural values have contributed to the development of the iconography of Guanyin. In studying and comparing the various iconographic forms in the diverse parts of East Asia we can see how local beliefs and other religious figures have shaped Guanyin's imagery. We can also see that it is the malleability of this cult figure that makes this possible. It is for this reason that the cult of Guanyin has been so successful. Part of the investigation into the influences that shaped Guanyin's imagery will involve a discussion of the 'sex change'. This has been the subject of much debate. Several figures can be said to have influenced this feminine form, these include Hārītī, Shengmu and Tārā. What is remarkable about the cult of Guanyin and explains its success, is that because imagery changes according to the needs of devotees, so gender also changes. This malleable quality of Guanyin is not restricted to gender but extends to other features and functions of Guanyin. These are determined by the beliefs of the various communities to which the cult has spread and evidenced by the interplay with the cults of other deities such as that of the Taoist goddess Mazu. In this particular case we can see first hand an example of the assimilation process at work. This thesis is the result of much 'on site' research, all photographs being my own except where cited otherwise. I use the 'Pinyin' system of transliteration except where the Wade-Giles form is more commonly known, which I show in square brackets.

Vidal, Claire. "Putuoshan, l’île (de) Guanyin : les facettes sociologiques d’un pèlerinage dans la Chine contemporaine." Thesis, Paris 10, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017PA100032.

Abstract:
Putuoshan Island (Zhoushan archipelago, Zhejiang) welcomes every year thousands of travelers coming from all over Asia to worship Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, and to express their wishes to be blessed, to receive miraculous responses and to see divine manifestations. Well known as a major Buddhist site since the tenth century, Putuoshan is by now the focus of many development projects, initiated at the end of the Cultural Revolution, that aim to transform the landscapes and to change the pilgrimage’s practices. These changes have reconfigured the local religious field that includes a plurality of actors each of them having their own goals and strategies. The monastic communities seek to increase the influence of the site; a goal that is shared by the political authorities, that encourage also the touristic initiatives taken by private companies, and by administrations in charge of cultural affairs. Of course, by the while, they mean to control the temples’ activities, as they do everywhere in China. Many different people project their own visions of the place onto Putuoshan, this insular microcosm, the island of Guanyin. They shape them by listening to the mythological narratives and discourses relayed by Buddhist media, as well as by reading the tourist literature that make the site become a place both in and out of the world. With their knowledge of Buddhist practices, they invent their own pilgrimage and their own relationship to Guanyin, whose presence is sometimes suggested, sometimes showed to them, or even staged through various theatrical sets. So that going to the island of Guanyin is properly to ”experience” Guanyin, this multifaceted bodhisattva able to take any existing form and performing miracles and marvels. Based on an ethnographic fieldwork research and on the analysis of local publications, this thesis means to analyze from an anthropological perspective, the various religious, economic, political and social aspects, that shape the site and its pilgrimage

Narayan, Hafid. "Guanylin peptides in heart failure." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/28515.

Abstract:
This study investigated the role of prouroguanylin (ProUGN) and proguanylin (ProGN), members of a novel class of peptides with natriuretic activity in heart failure (HF), a disorder of declining cardiac output associated with disturbed sodium and water homeostasis. The hypothesis was that ProUGN and ProGN activity is dysregulated in chronic and acute HF. Plasma ProUGN and ProGN were measured in 243 patients with chronic stable HF and plasma ProUGN and cGMP, an intracellular mediator of ProUGN activity, measured in 336 patients admitted to hospital with acute HF using immunoassays. ProUGN and cGMP levels were repeated in acute HF patients prior to discharge. The primary endpoints were all cause mortality, HF readmission and either outcome at 180 days. ProUGN and ProGN were significantly greater in patients with chronic HF compared to controls and inversely correlated with eGFR. ProUGN and ProGN were significantly greater in patients with hypertension and in those taking diuretics, with higher levels associated with increased severity of HF as assessed by NYHA class. In multivariate analysis, eGFR was the only independent predictor of plasma ProUGN and ProGN level. ProUGN and cGMP were significantly lower in patients with acute HF compared to in controls. Pre-discharge ProUGN and cGMP were significantly greater than at admission, with pre-discharge ProUGN significantly greater than in controls. Admission ProUGN was significantly greater in patients who died and a greater pre-discharge ProUGN was significantly associated with increased risk of early mortality. Pre-discharge cGMP levels were significantly lower in those readmitted with HF compared to those not, with higher levels significantly associated with reduced risk of early HF readmission. A greater pre-discharge ProUGN/cGMP ratio was significantly associated with increased risk of mortality or HF readmission. These results suggest that adverse outcomes in HF may be associated with hyporesponsiveness to ProUGN.

Abstract:
Chemically Modified Carbon Paste and Pyrolitic Graphite Electrodes were prepared via electrochemical deposition from guanine and dopamine solutions. Carbon paste electrodes were modified in guanine solutions under an applied potential of 1.1 V (vs Ag/AgCl, KClsat ) during 12 minutes under constant stirring. They were used for sat electrochemical detection of NADH, NADPH, uric acid and 8-oxoguanine. Detection limits were 3.3, 3.7, 6.6 and 2.0 10-6 mol L-1 respectively, with sensitivity of 0.13, 0.10, 0.26 and 0.40 A mol-1 L cm-2 , respectively. The electrodes showed high reproducibility and absence of surface poisoning effects. Good analytical performance was attributed to the formation of superficial dimer or trimers species of guanine during the modification process. Pyrolitic graphite electrodes, previously submitted an electrochemical treatment in NaOH solution, were modified in dopamine solution (phosphate buffer, pH 10) under an applied potential of 1.5 V (vs Ag/AgCl, KClsat ) during 2 minutes under constant sat stirring and, further used for the simultaneous determination of ascorbic acid (AA), uric acid (AU) and dopamine (DA). The analytical curves were obtained changing the concentration of the wished analyte, at constant concentration levels of the interferences: 1.0 x 10-4 mol L-1 (DA), 5.0 x 10-5 mol L-1 (UA) and 1.0 x 10-3 mol L-1 (AA). Detection limits were 1.4 x 10-6 mol L-1 , 2.5 x 10-5 mol L-1 and 1.1 x 10-7 mol L-1 for UA, AA and DA, respectively. Uric acid was determined in human urine, blood and serum samples without any previous treatment. Recovering percentages of 92 to 103 % were obtained.

Personal creations were based on Taiwanese folk Beliefs and personal observations. By creating new myths, transferring the idea of ”The concept of myth is the collection of all subconscious”, said by Carl Gustav Jung. Living in the cultural tips of post-modern and post-colonial, I tried to find a new express way of my creations. The word, myths, is always regarded and underestimated as superstition. However, the essence of myths should be more than people thought. Some untraceable myths reflect the divinity of creation. The origin of creative works was due to the essential need of human spirits, which expected salvation from gods. Furthermore people formed the shape of gods. Religion was served by artists before, and now pop myths has replaced. In contrast to the ancient experience of myths, signifier has become more important than signified. We need to think that if there is a way to see future through Taiwanese views. As an art worker, I asked myself what Taiwan meant to us. What is so called Taiwanese styles? Folk beliefs will be an interesting quiz. In this paper, I started my creation from Polytheism and Shamanism in folk beliefs. Not only abandoning the doctrine or guidelines, but also changing position of god and human beings. Involving creations, even the appearance of god was also changed by individuals’ subconscious. Through my imagination, the appearance of Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy, has been changed from solemn to friendly. The solemn Guanyin is represented with strawberry and becoming kinder and more friendly than before. Through painting and personification, strawberry Guanyin, has been represented as a lovely god who crazily loves dressing and strawberry. These allegory paintings of strawberry Guanyin were created through questing myself inside and investigating some outside events in our society.

The Discussion of the Origin of Guanyin Divination Slips— Take the Guanyin Divination Slips of Banqiao Jieyun Temple as an Example Abstract Divination-slip Drawing is an ancient and special part of Chinese culture. From the Divine-block Casting, Divination-slip Drawing, the story of the topic of the Divination Slips, the meaning of Divination Slips, to the fortune and misfortune of the Divination Slips, are very interesting and meaningful. That is the communication between the deities and followers. When believers are indecisive and helpless, the Divination Slips may give them the spiritual guidance and show them the direction of lives. Because of the long-standing culture of them, Divination Slips have various types, such as Guan-ti Divination Slips, Matsu Divination Slips, Guanyin Divination Slips, and Medicine Divination Slips. This thesis only discusses Guanyin Divination Slips, and it has five chapters: Chapter one is an introduction and it introduces how Chinese value it. For example, during the Chinese New Year, temples will draw the Divination Slips to foresee the luck of the new year for the nation. This chapter also tells the study achievement of Chinese and western scholars. Chapter two is about Guanyin belief and Chinese society. It mainly researches on the origin, sex, and relative sutra of Guanyin Bodhisattva, and its profound influence to Chinese society after its propagation to China. It presents the modern researches about Guanyin Bodhisattva as well. Chuu, Ling-in Lilian. "The cult of Guanyin who brings sons in China." Thesis, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/11674.

Full text
Abstract:
Guanyin Who Brings Sons usually represented as a white-robed lady carrying a baby in her arms, is a famous goddess specializing in granting sons widely worshiped in China. Developed from a promise of Guanyin to bring children to people in the "Universal Gateway" chapter of Lotus Sutra, a significant scripture promoting Guanyin belief, she is not an independent deity different from Guanyin, the Bodhisattva Avalokitasvara or the Goddess of Mercy in Mahayana Buddhist tradition. Personalizing and embodying Guanyin's power of bringing children, she is one form of Guanyin's various manifestations. The establishment of the cult of Guanyin Who Brings Sons in China has a long history, which was closely associated with the development of Guanyin worship in China. Having the same Buddhist background as Guanyin, Guanyin Who Brings Sons experienced the same Chinese transformation as Guanyin did in her development in China. The Chinese transformation of Guanyin occurred under the impact of Chinese traditional culture, social values and indigenous religions after the worship of her had been introduced to China. The result of it is to make her widely accepted by the Chinese and to be deemed as a deity with Chinese characteristics. As a manifestation of Guanyin, Guanyin Who Brings Sons was also syncretized with Chinese culture and gained her Chinese image during the transformation. The Sinicized cult of Guanyin Who Brings Sons had different belief dimensions, which can be basically divided into orthodox Buddhism and folk Buddhism. Moreover, her duty was no longer confined to the function of granting sons. She was charged with the responsibilities concerning childbirth and childcare to become the patron of women and children. The objective of this thesis is not only to draw a sketch of the development of this cult in China from miracle tales, indigenous scriptures, scholars' field reports and other historical materials, but also to explore the different belief dimensions of this cult and compare the roles of Guanyin Who Brings Sons in these dimensions, in order to investigate the Chinese transformation reflected in them.

This dissertation, Guanyin as a Female Archetype: following Jung’s Theory, has the purpose of framing the chinese goddess of Mercy, Guanyin, in one of Jung’s feminine archetypes, or that possess a feminine counterpart: the Mother, the Koré, the Child and the Trickster. In order to fulfil this goal, two stories of Guanyin are analysed: the legend of Princess Miao Shan and Journey to the West. The first chapter presents the Unconscious and Jung’s theories, the Collective Unconscious and the Archetypes: the Shadow, the Anima/Animus duality, the Mother, the Koré, the Child, the Trickster and the Wise Man. The second chapter focuses on Buddhism, which forms the essential basis so that we can understand Guanyin, the origin of Guanyin and some of her iconographies, and the histories aforementioned. In the third chapter the fundamental concepts of the first and second chapters are deepened, finishing with the archetypical analysis of Guanyin and opening new lines of investigation.

Guanyin is well-known and ubiquitous among various Gods and Goddesses. The changeable dharma characters have struck into people’s hearts. It always expresses patience of listening to people’s worries and wishes and tolerates their irrationalities. The miracles of helping the needy and relieving the distressed have been widely praised. To enhance the intention of consumption, convenience stores have promoted affectionate Q dolls of Gods and Goddesses to break the solemn and inaccessible images, booming the collections. It is advertised and promoted that collecting and carrying such statuses allow people being blessed by Buddha. With the change of social atmosphere, professional status-painters, who used to follow the traditional rules for solemn paintings, have been changed because of the promotion of Q dolls of Gods and Goddesses. Such affectionate dharma characters seem to reduce the blessedness function of deterring monsters from harassment. For this reason, an affectionate Q doll is created based on the contrast between solemnness and benignity. It tends to deliver a fixed painting style with a different statue painting style integrating with amiability and stateliness. Focusing on the well-known Guanyin as the creativity study, some benign and cute elements are combined with the life experiences and cognition of the author. Without losing the traditional beauty of Guanyin, various figures are studied, the oriental dharma characters of Guanyin and the symbols of Tibetan Buddism are combined, and affectionate Q creative styles are centered as the unique presentation to show a distinct beauty of Guanyin. It is expected to have the young generation accept such affectionate Q Guanyin so as to enhance the understanding of Guanyin, to prefer and identify with religious arts, and to improve the performance of behavior, language, and mind

This paper is based on the study of a collection of paintings titled The Twenty-two Icons of Guanyin. This collection of paintings was done by the Tao-Buddhist painter, Ding Yunpeng (1547~1628), a renowned artist whose fame crossed over high-class art and mass culture. Even though the handwritings of the signatures on these paintings somewhat conflicted with the titles of Ding Yunpeng’s authentic works, according to experts’ inferences, they till categorized this collection as done by Ding Yunpeng. Based on the information on the numerous versions that the author has been able to collect, the collection of paintings has at least six versions. This paper will utilize the study of editions to analyze and comment on the artist and his painting’s artistic styles. From the perspective of common Ming-Dynasty artists, Ding Yunpeng was able to create what he deemed as natural and forthright images of the “Nan-hai Guanyin”. Besides inheriting the styles of the previous dynasty’s Guanyin images, what changes were shown on Ding’s highly “popularized” styles of the Guanyin collection? Also, what are the meanings behind these painting’s popularized styles? The main focus of this thesis is to discuss Ding Yunpeng’s Twenty-Two Icons of Guanyin based on “Debate about both Refined and Popular Tastes”, especially the images presented by this collection of Guanyin paintings, that is religious conscious images as a result of the combination of popular culture and Buddhist thoughts, which was common among later Ming Dynasty's popular arts. The unique Guanyin images in this collection have been influenced by the Buddhist thoughts of Ding's time (late Ming Dynasty), which was the combined thoughts of “simultaneous practice of Ch'an and Pure Land”, Pure-Land-inclined “Contemplation of the Buddha,” and “Unity of the Three Teachings.” This type of artistic image exemplified how Buddhism, on the forefront, usually utilize “popularized” expedient means to propagate the Dharma, for instance, the Buddhist influences from popular artistic creations to propagate the Dharma and further penetrate the entire social culture; internally, this type of artistic images have helped to establish a correlated relationship between mass culture, Buddhist thoughts and practicing the Dharma. Ding’s collection of Guanyin paintings, which later expanded to include 53 paintings in all called the Fifty Three Presense of the Goddess of Mercy, is a collection filled with sensibility, benevenonce, as well as activities found in daily lives. We could see from Ding’s collection that it is a collection of Guanyin paintings full of promising and developmental force in the propagation of the religious belief in Guanyin, this collection not only set the basis for the images of Guanyin in paintings, it also became a great influence to creations of Guanyin paintings from then on.

The Journey to The West is a fantastic and magical novel and it is also one of the four Chinese masterpieces. Over the past four hundred years it has been discussed, and studied, by many Chinese and foreign scholars all over the world. While studying this paper, we have to know the edition and the author. Next, when we study the image of Guanyin in The Journey to The West, we have to find out the original form. It was from Guanyin in India, and it was a child with two horses in Rgveda. Also, it came from Vishnu who has many incarnations and it had lots of images from Shiva. The Guanyin from India had fully satisfied the religious expectation in China, and then it started a series of changes. Guanyin was always a male figure. But when Emperor Wucheng of Southern and Northern Dynasty was ill lying in bed, he dreamed that Guanyin was a beautiful woman. Since then, Guanyin became female. Thereafter, Guanyin repeatedly showed up in many different Chinese classical books, literature and dramas; it had been changing a lot, especially in Buddhist scriptures. We could see the origin of Guanyin more clearly in The Journey to The West. From the thinking, the style, the character, the dressing, the living and even the differing images of Guanyin in The Journey to The West, we could analyze and discuss in three parts. Therefore, we would get over the meaning of the Guanyin in The Journey to The West. In Kamakura Period( 1185-1333), the The Thirty-three Buddism Godness Guanyin in Buddhist art had become the major form of Chinese Guanyin. It was explained in many books. Because of this, the image of Guanyin in The Journey to The West had the image of Nanhai Guanyin, the image of Willow Guanyin and the image of Fish Basket Holding Guanyin; it effected the image of Lotus in Hand Guanyin after the publishing The Journey to The West. While you read this paper, there are many more, broader pieces of literature about the image of Guanyin. In such a vast amount of literature, this paper just scratches the surface. If you want to study more about the image of Guanyin in The Journey to The West, we hope you will know better from this research. Also, it will make more people study the Guanyin in more depth. There is a vast amount of literature available regarding the image of Guanyin, of which this paper represents a tiny amount. However, if you want to further study, or know more about the image of Guanyin in The Journey to The West, we hope that this research will provide you with a better understanding. Additionally, we hope that it will encourage more people to study Guanyin in more depth.

The World Travel and Tourism Council recognizes cultural tourism to be the industry with the highest developmental potential in the 21st Century. Because of its geographical remoteness that is composed of offshore townships in Taoyuan City, Guanyin District had not received its due respect and recognition in the development of cultural tourism. This study seeks to analye the value of Guanyin District on the development ofreligion festival culturaltourism. Since Guanyin District is populated by Minnan and Hakka ethnic groups, sacrificial culture is prevalent in local temples in which “Worshiping of Min” and “Arrival of God as Guest” can often be seen as results of racial blending. By inviting adjacent “Golden Buddha Body” to the temple for activities of “Peace Theatric Play”, holding “Game of Chicken Castration” in “Land God Activity”, or giving away bride cakes, the study seeks to understand the uniqueness of festival culture activity from observation, participation, and interview. Festival activities may integrate the peripheral scenic sights, special activities and delicacies of the locals. Community approval may be achieved with the integration of festival culture tour package from festival activities that activates local cultural creativity and economy. Finally, the value of local official promoted festival culture is increased whenever the locals feel the pride of developed festival culture tourism which would further reinforce their participation. Through enhanced festival culture inheritance, it is desired to construct a brand image of festival culture tourism in Guanyin District, as well as its sustained management.

Such elements as its rising beach tourism, growing agricultural economy, emerging postmodern creative industries, its millennial algal reef along the coastline, aquaculture industry, its ethnic politico-economic condition, and the educational policy in Taiwan, to name a few, are critical cultural and natural resources of the township, thus have constituted the major factors of the community’s development. This research explores, by showing the community development in Guanyin Township, how Hakka as a majority lead their community, the role they played, the impact of their culture on the community development, and the vicissitude of the culture. Its purpose is to examine the relation between the community development of the township and issues of the heritage of Hakka Culture. The author finally argues that we shall be unable to capture the value of Hakka Culture in the community development, unless we can realize the meaning of its heritage.

The biological reefs located along the coastal line of Guanyin and Xinwu districts in Taoyuan city is consisted of algal reefs and coral reefs, and also regarded as a big and complete biological reef area in Taiwan. Algal reefs build up extremely slow and expand only 0.9 to 2.3 mm every month; as a result, any investigation in the algal reef area must be implemented very carefully to reduce potential influence in the environment. Because of special electrical property of reefs, it is suitable for applications of electrical exploration methods. The Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) is a fast, non-destructive, and inexpensive surficial geophysical survey method, and therefore it is widely used to investigate reefs. In this study, the location, distribution area and depth of algal reefs were investigated by ERT method to provide a reliable reference of coastal engineering and the establishment of ecosystem refuge. The study area is from the south coast of Fulin river to the south coast of Guanyin river. There are four ERT survey lines, three of them are 960m long and parallel to the shoreline, and the other one is 240m long and perpendicular to others. According to the Archie's Law, the porosity was calculated from the resistivity profile to estimate the depth of reefs beneath each survey line and verify the estimates with the data obtained from borehole core. The results show that the upper boundary of the reefs is 0-1.5m deep (there are sands layer above), and the lower boundary is 4-6m deep (there are conglomerates layer below) in the study area. In addition, all profiles obtained from the north-south survey lines show that the depth of reefs becomes shallower in the range of 100 m in the southernmost end, indicating the southern boundary of the reef distribution in the study area.

A Study of Buddhist Monastic Poetries on Guanyin Paintings of Song Dynasty Abstract Chan Buddhism teaches a "special transmission outside scriptures" which "does not dependent on words and letters". Chan Buddhism aims at “direct pointing at human mind; seeing into the nature to attain Buddhahood”. For Chan moanstics, the image of Guanyin serves a meditative purpose rather than a ritualistic aspect. Meditating on Guanyin paintings, Chan monastics look deeply into themselves, attempting to attain a reflective, purified and mindful state. Analyzing Buddhist monastic poetries on Guanyin paintings will reveal the depth of the monastics’ spiritual attainment and their understanding of Guanyin Bodhisattvahood. It will also reveal the culture of Guanyin worship of the time. Images of Guanyin are the most diversified among images of buddhas and bodhisattvas. The Song Dynasty experienced great economic and cultural renaissance. Styles of Guanyin paintings revolutionized. Examining monastic poetries on Guanyin paintings will help to understand the artistic trend of Guanyin image and the inspiration of Guanyin worship of the time. In addition, examining the characteristics and meanings of Guanyin paintings will help to understand the relationship between Buddhism and Chinese art. The Collection of Song Poems contains a large number of works by Buddhist monastics. Among those poems, a great number are written on paintings of buddhas and/or bodhisattvas. They are called “zanti”, vivid and expressive. Zanti brings a new form of life into Buddhism but rarely gains academic attention. This research will study two Buddhist monks’ poetries on Guanyin paintings in The Collection of Song Poems and A Supplement to The Collection of Song Poems. Chinese Buddhism, according to different emphasis on different Buddhist canons, evolves into different Guanyin worship systems and each exhibits different images and thoughts. In this paper, I will examine the development of Guanyin worship through the historical aspect. I will also investigate Guanyin worship through religious aspect, by comparing different canonical discourses in order to understand the essence of Guanyin worship as well as the phenomenon of Guanyin worship in the Chan tradition. This paper will firstly explore the history and development of Guanyin worship by discussing the Guanyin images, expressed ideas and art styles in Song monastic zanti. This will reveal the characteristics and aesthetics in Guanyin zanti. Finally, this paper will discuss the value and influence of Guanyin zanti in Song Dynasty. Recreational agriculture is a leisure industry that emerged and transformed from the traditional industry. The rise of the industry directs agricultural resources into the leisure market, with the aim of developing unique business strategies for the operations and management of recreational agriculture. During the prime of recreational farms in Guanyin, there were 44 farms; however, this number has declined to 20. Clearly, the development of recreational farms in Guanyin gradually entered the recession. This study investigated the business strategies of recreational farms in Guanyin, Taoyuan County, and proposed suggestions for business strategies as reference for the owners of recreational farms. This study collected data through interviews with business owners, the public sector, non-profit organizations, and questionnaire surveys at tourist locations. There were two questionnaire designs, the first targets business owners, the public sector, and non-profit organizations. A semi-structured interview was used to develop the interview outlines, with the order of questions adjusted during the interviews, according to interviewee’s responses. Further explanations from the interviewees regarding the interview questions were requested, if necessary, to complete data collection. There were 8 interview questions, which were applied to 19 subjects, including 10 farm owners, 3 in the public sector and 6 in non-profit organizations. The second questionnaire targets tourists in order to understand their perceptions of the present operational quality of recreational farms, as based on Importance Performance Analysis (IPA). There were 17 questions in the questionnaire, and 275 copies were distributed, with 259 effective samples and 16 invalid samples returned. The findings of the interviews indicated that the homogeneity of recreational farms in Guanyin is too high, and the business owners lack sufficient capital. Moreover, it is difficult to form strategic alliances with the community and buildings, which is an obstruction for business operations. The results of the tourist survey revealed that, tourists place a high level of importance on the overall natural scenes of Guanyin, its industrial and cultural activities, and its local cuisine. However, the tourists report a low level of satisfaction with all three items, indicating that, while the customers are most concerned with these items, they are relatively dissatisfied with the services provided by the local business owners and local public sector, and suggest that this situation should be improved, and thus, be turned into an advantage for both the community and the recreational farms. This study suggests that the future direction of recreational farms in Guanyin should focus on the development of rural tourism and community buildings in order to promote the leisure industry. In addition, the planning of the Taoyuan Aerotropolis will be a future opportunity for the Guanyin community. The business owners and locals should seize this opportunity to improve the quality of the farms, and create a new source of added value for sustainable development of recreational farms in Guanyin.

With the improvement of our lives, the demands for the quality of the life rise gradually. Moreover, the implementation of the two-day-off per week policy has led to a phenomenon of recreational tourism activities. The recreational tourism activity has already become an indispensable part in life, and it has become the most popular industry in the 21st century. Not only can it increase the employment opportunities, but also raises the economic income. To some undeveloped areas, the recreational tourism industry proposes excellent tactics to prompt local economic development. In recent years, under the circumstances of the governmental encouragement, a lot of local governments start to promote their unique local industry, and use cultural festival celebration activities to attract tourists. By doing this, hopefully it can as well improves local economics. The result turns well in some regions. However, in this numerous festival celebration activities, only a few industries managed to last for a long time, and most of them are just the fad for the moment and reduplication in a short period of time. This does not boost local economic development; moreover, it is a waste of resources. In addition, when holding festival celebration activities, the involvement of cooperation between official and private organizations is inevitable. Therefore, the coordination and communication between official departments and private organizations becomes the key to success. This research takes Taoyuan Lotus Festival for example, and discusses the role official and private partnership plays in local economic development and how much influence it has on developing local economics. At the same time, there is an attempt to find out the problems of the Taoyuan Lotus Festival and find a way to reach the goal of long-term operation. The finding is that the official department is still predominating over Taoyuan Lotus Festival at present but it has already planned to change from a top-to bottom way into a bottom-to-top operation in the future. Besides, Taoyuan Lotus Festival really has a significant influence on Guanyin Township no matter the improvement of popularity or the increase of the economic income. Finally, the problem of Taoyuan Lotus Festival face at present is due to depressed economy, homogeneous activities and seasons. Official and private departments need to make concrete efforts to improve these problems, and make Guanyin township move towards the real recreational tourism industry.

Since the remote ages, when human beings still lived in caves, frescos have been used to display life experiences and as a way to pass them down. When written languages were invented, people in eastern and western world expressed their life experienceson clay boards, pottery, oracle bones, bamboo slips, leathers and so on, by words, painting, writing, or sculpting. The techniques developed from traditional education to postmodern innovation, which leads to the diversity of contemporary designing. These pieces of art use Guanyin as designing elements. Through collecting picture books or publications featuring“Guanyin”, an experimental design called The Track of Guanyin is developed. Thirty-Three kinds of incarnations ofGuanyins will be the blueprint of this work. Motivations, aims, approaches, and operative steps of this studies and creation are presented in Chapter 1. Chapter 2 describes the script writing on Guanyin and expression in drawing. The generation evolution, antecedent, images, and metamorphosis of Guanyin will also be the topics here. Chapter 3 describes interpretation about naming ofGuanyin, stories of metamorphosis and manifestation, and the styles and analysis of works,themingthirty-three kinds of incarnations, from other artists. Depending on the studies above, designing ideas and ways of drawing will be determined. The entire studies and design will revolve around Thirty-Three Guanyins that spread through folks. 1. Use delineated Guanyin as a draft. Finish the work by hand painting and computer graphics. 2. With the spirit of listening attentively to the secular world, Guanyin tracks the sounds, metamorphoses, and shows up in different countries. This experimental design tries to display the combination of eastern and western cultures by mixing the bearing of Guamyinwith world scenery, local characteristics, and totems. 3.Two-dimension visual space, including colors, images, words, is turned into the conception of art. Viatwo different expressive ways, delineation and painting,thirty-three kinds of incarnations differ in features.Creativity makes richness of work show on its own and presents the diversity of designing ideas. This creative paper will end up in a display. I hope these various creative styles of Guanyins can beused as parts the development of cultural and creative value-added products. Additionally,to root different metamorphosis of Guanyin deeply in folks, various materials and processing can be applied in the producing goods. By writing the argument and modifying in drawing, I found the creating process of thirty-three kinds of incarnations of Guanyin gave me tranquility in mind, which spurred the unprecedented attentionand confidence inside me. Furthermore, I realize the profound ideology and cultural extension in creativity.I hope reading the texts about Guanyin,I can learn the spirit of selfless dedication and benevolence, which can be creeds of my behaviors. Following the traditional virtue, dogood since you know it,will be part of my life. It is like livingharmony with nature in following the rule of nature. This principle of keeping balance is a proper outlook on life.
