In Chamelco and beyond, the Q'eqchi' are one of Mesoamerica's largest indigenous groups, registering close to one million speakers in Guatemala alone. The department of Alta Verapaz is home to 776,246 residents, 720,741 of whom identify ethnically as indigenous. Spanish chroniclers suggest that Alta Verapaz has served as the Q'eqchi' homeland since the Pre-Columbian era. Chamelco's contemporary population consists of more than 38,973 individuals, a small fraction of Guatemala's total Q'eqchi' population, This chapter discusses the history of the Q'eqchi' homeland of Alta Verapaz.
