Abstract: This article situates the work of U.S. born Guatemalan American novelist Tanya María Barrientos within Latinx and U.S. Central American Studies, critiquing national classifications for Latinx subjects that I read alongside Maritza Cárdenas’s and Frances Aparicio’s frameworks of passing. I argue that Barrientos links melodrama to a longing for Latinidad as she challenges a harmful discourse of assimilation by reclaiming an affective connection to a Mexican American community in the U.S. Mexico borderlands.
