Abstract: The conceptual oeuvre of Félix Guattari, portrayed by books, essays, articles, lectures, courses and interviews, are the result not only of his intense political activism but also of his clinical practice and readings about philosophy, science and art. We also find in his works echoes of an old overall project that could be summarized by a question on which French scholars, among a several number of other intellectuals, have been discussing since Kant. This project corresponds to the question: How did we become what we are? Regarding this (im) possible association, Guattari seems to reply that we become what we are by producing subjectivity. Before attempting to answer the issue, he formulated several questions such as: What is the relation between capitalism and subjectivity production? Is the subjectivity production strictly human? How do the subjectivation procedures (the active production of subjectivity) organize the subjectivity currently? Why does a specific subjectivity production take place instead of another? Do the collectivity instances work as subjectivity producers? Is it possible to withstand the processes of subjectivity production? Although an analysis of Guattari's works seems an ambitious proposal, as regards the overall project in which his works are inserted and the questions raised by them towards contemporaneity, it can be done. In order to achieve it, this dissertation aims to develop this analysis attempting to comprehend the educational institution role in the subjectivation process of the individuals at the present time. Considering this goal, we will elaborate an introduction to Guattari's thought. This will allow us to introduce the concepts of the machinic subjectivity as well as the production of capitalistic subjectivity, concepts which seem to be throughout Guattari's oeuvre and also appear to support the remaining concepts, significant for the analysis

Abstract:
Geophilosophy is a lag concept in Deleuze and Guattari’s work, and besides its can be applied at the last book in partnership « Qu´est-ce que la Philosophie ? », it is a notion that involves their main conceptual creations, circumscribing the period of Capitalisme et schizophrénie, but in dialogue with distincts notions and moments of both autors work. Under the heading of the notion, philosophy consecrates the conexion of a absolut immanence plan derivative of a social and immanent environment that constitutes the conjunction of variable relations between the territory and the earth. This way, the act of thinking doesn’t gravitate in the orbit of the categories of suject and object, but concerns to a intensive and contingent environment, that, setting an ambience of external circunstances, delimits a field of conexions and borders, of multiple relations and becomings that skirts the molar and the molecular, establishing a system of change, capture and overcoding of the codes. In this route, the thought and the concepts invocate an « outside », a molecular becoming, animal and inconspicuous becomings that settle the territory and the assemblages, profiling conexions, heterogeneous and rhizomatic ramifications that follow by intensive lines, conjuring forces and movements of earth that operates by diagrammatic movements, geodey and deterritorialization. Setting up, in effect, a cartography of displacements, directions and pathways that circumscribes the map of a geography agitated by creepage, longitudes and latitudes, being these, by the way, the conditions of the absolut immanence plan of thinking, of its deterritorialization and reterritorialization

Abstract:
This thesis constitutes an investigation into contemporary writing--both fictional and philosophical. More specifically, it is a comparative analysis of the work of British novelist Angela Carter, and French philosophers Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, in the light of the concept of synthetic authenticity. It is divided into three chapters, "Becomings", "Events", and "Machines", and each chapter presents the work of both Carter and Deleuze and Guattari, respectively, in light of one of these topics. Chapter Two, however, focuses closely on Angela Carter's first novel, Shadow Dance, as it relates to the concept 'event'. And Chapter Three focuses on Carter's novel The Infernal Desire Machines of Doctor Hoffman, as it relates to and differs from the schizoanalytic notion of desiring machines.

Abstract:
This aim of this study is to investigate the manner in which Deleuze’s individual and collaborative work can be productively understood as being concerned with the question of living well, where it will be suggested that living well necessitates that we not only become aware of, but that we also explore, the forever renewed present possibilities for living otherwise that each moment brings. In particular, this study will make an original contribution to existing Deleuzian studies by arguing that what legitimises this conception of living well, and what can motivate us to engage in such a practice, is that a life that becomes aware of and explores the open field of present possibilities for living otherwise that each moment engenders is a life that reflects, or that is lived in accordance with, the challenging ontological account that can be discerned throughout Deleuze’s individual and collaborative work; a life lived in accordance with his open, dynamic and thoroughly temporal theory of Being or what I will suggest he came to refer to simply as ‘Life’. In addition, I will argue that in so far as each individual human being is to be understood as an ongoing and immanent expression of Life, an immediate expression of Life understood as a universal, impersonal and pre-individual dynamism, then a life that strives to explore the forever renewed present possibilities for living otherwise that each moment brings - a practice that I shall propose also necessitates that each individual strives to resist the diverse ways in which their present possibilities are continually hindered, thwarted and negated - is not only a life that strives to live in accordance with the temporal dynamism of Life, but is also a life lived in accordance with our own dynamic and thoroughly temporal being.

Abstract:
On the basis of a exhaustive identification of the references to music and sound in the philosophical production of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, the present research concentrates on the position occupied by John Cage’s musical thought in a number of deleuzian texts. The first chapter analyses the works composed by Cage between 1939 and 1952, focusing on two principal aspects: the micro-macrocosmic structure that characterises his first works, and the four elements that resume Cage’s approach to composition in the period in question. The latter are considered in relation to Hjelmslev’s theory of double articulation as elaborated by Deleuze and Guattari; both aspects are referred to the system of strata and stratification found in A Thousand Plateaus. The second chapter is dedicated to the compositions of the central decades of Cage’s production, in the light of the passage of A Thousand Plateaus in which Cage is considered in relation to the concept of a “fixed sonorous plane”. Particular attention is given to the way in which Cage conceives the relation between duration and sound materials, and to the variable degree to which chance and indeterminacy are present. The compositions of this period are furthermore seen in reference to the deleuzo-guattarian concept of cartography. The last fifteen years of Cage’s production are studied through the theory of multiplicity and the concept of rhizome. The score composed by Sylvano Bussotti that appears at the beginning of A Thousand Plateaus is therefore considered, followed by an examination of Cage’s late textual and musical works, giving particular attention to mesostics, time brackets and variable structure, and anarchic harmony

Abstract:

Abstract:
Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari are not famous for having a deep, enduring interest in theatre. This thesis first develops historical and biographical elements to reveal that the notion of their indifference to theatre is cruelly inexact: the former repeatedly mentions drama and constructively criticises it, while the latter turns out to be the author of dramas which are yet unpublished, and whose theatrical characteristics are revealed here. In a more conceptual part, I then offer the mapping of a heterogeneous web of notions that both philosophers abide by: theatre is used in the creation of new concepts; it is at the service of a new wording of philosophy. The Theatre of Thought, the Method of Dramatisation, the Theatre of Cruelty, the Schizo Theatre, the Minor Theatre and the Theatre through the process of Becoming-Other are the signposts of A Coming Theatre that our research sets out to explore. Gilles Deleuze’s philosophy offers a reaction to the crisis of theatre. While Deleuze takes theatre on new lines of flight and pushes it on the verge of pure abstraction, Félix Guattari forges a Postdramatic Theatre. My thesis includes indexes of all the theatrical vocabulary and characters to be found in the works of both philosophers, as well as interviews by some of their close artist friends

Park, Daeseung. "La stratégie minoritaire chez Deleuze et Guattari." Thesis, Toulouse 2, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020TOU20003.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis attempts to examine elements of the strategy of emancipation from Deleuze and Guattari’s perspective of the minority. It is about showing how the "becoming-minoritarian" developed in A Thousand Plateaus works as a revolutionary "minoritarian strategy". Its opposite is the "majoritarian strategy" represented by the Gramscian theory of "hegemony". In order to define these two strategies and formulate their "antinomy", we first take Balibar’s reflection on "strategies of civility" as a guide for research. The thesis has three moments. The First part deals with the concept of "strategy": from the 12th Plateau of A Thousand Plateaus on the "War machine", we bring out the concept of "pure strategy" which distinguishes the two strategies in terms of the concept of strategy. In the Second part, the Gramscian theory of subalternity and the "historical bloc" is translated into the Guattaro-Deleuzian perspective, so that we conceive of subalternity and minority as constituting a "block of becoming". Thus, it turns out that Gramsci’s strategy consists of a double movement of hegemony and becoming-subaltern. This translation allows us to understand the relationship between the two strategies as an antinomic coexistence. First, there is an impossibility of articulating between them: a minor social group will declare in the majoritarian strategy that "we are all human", while a revolutionary power of the minoritarian strategy consists in asserting that "we are not human, neither are you, and we all become savage, animal, inhuman and molecular". However, these two antinomic strategies coexist in the current struggles of minorities against the world capitalist axiomatic. Finally, the Third part examines problems that arise from this coexistence

Abstract:
This research aims at developing an analisys about the importance of the concepts formulated by Deleuze and Deleuze-Guattari in Brazilian educational thought. It is not difficult, in academic articles, to come across with concepts such as nomadism, devir, cartography, rhizome, plateaus, deterritorialization and many others. The appropriation of the conceptual deleuze-guattarian has produced displacements and inspired analytical procedures other than those that took shape in the early 1990s , within the study called \"post- critical\" , paving the way for what we call trials of thought. Looking erect a critical able to affect the reader and get him to produce a thought the other , rather than lead him to the discovery of a truth this elsewhere, a production that has been using the philosophy of Deleuze and Guattari assumes analytical contours hitherto unpublished , experiencing intensive that the concepts developed by the duo of authors behave . Given this \"deleuzean\" shadow which hovers over the field such as the myriad of writings that we see emerging every day, it is necessary to question this literature in order to set up a possible horizon of dissemination of such thinking in Brazilian education academic production. Therefore, we try to present a problematization of deleuz-guattarian studies in Brazilian educational field, focusing on the top 44 articles published in reputable journals in the area - according to the table Qualis 2013 - between 1990 and 2013. Guided by a post-structuralist approach in education, this research is a critical study which is grounded in an interrogational sitting here on the concepts of file and problematization which comes from the legacy of French thinker Michel Foucault. Our objective is to apprehend the emergency conditions of this Deleuzian literature in the educational studies. We submit the following analytical question to the archive of journals indexed: how educational scholarship has experienced the need for deleuzear or guattariar or deleuze-guattariniar?

Abstract:
The object of this thesis is the « materialist psychiatry » (also referred to as « schizoanalysis ») which Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari detailed in their 1972 work entitled Anti-Œdipus. Our project is to outline the conceptual contents of this practical theory which has too often been misapprehended and discarded as mere abstraction. Schizoanalysis, which was set up both along and against psychoanalysis, aims at reorienting the basis of psychoanalytical cures by remodelling the metapsychological theory, using the clinical study of schizophrenia. Our concern is to show evidence of a functionalist metapsychology within Anti-Œdipus and to measure exactly how and how much it bends the ways of psychoanalysis by modifying the concepts that lie at the core of its operations. In our first chapter we will pore over the concept of the “body without organs”, which falls into several distinct parts, each corresponding to a vital station, in order to show that the synthesis of the production of the unconscious is exposed in agreement with different dialectical schemes, and then to examine under which conditions this dialectic of desire is incorporated into the theory of social production. In our second chapter, we infer from Deleuze and Guattari’s metapsychology the principles of subjective interactions and we strive to determine the precise nature of the perversion that affects them, in order to get a thorough grasp of the analytical relationship which, according to Anti-Œdipus, amounts to the paradigm of a perverse relationship. Our third chapter examines to what extent psychoanalysis can be rejuvenated thanks to schizoanalysis

Abstract:
Critics of Virginia Woolf's fiction have tended to focus their arguments on one of the following five cruxes: Woolf's personal biography, the role of art, the nature of reality, the structure of her novels, or they focus their arguments on gender-based criticism. Often, when critics attempt to explain Woolf through any of these categories, they succeed in constructing borders around her writing that minimize the multiplicities outside them. Post-structuralist theory helps to open up difference in Woolf's writing, specifically, the theories of Giles Deleuze and Félix Guattari. Their book, A Thousand Plateaus, allows readers of Woolf's novel, To the Lighthouse, outside the confines some past critics have put around it. I apply select Deleuze and Guattarian metaphors to Woolf's To the Lighthouse in order that multiplicities of the novel stand out. The Deleuze and Guattarian metaphors that are most successful in opening up difference in To the Lighthouse are strata; the Body without Organs; becoming; milieu and rhythm; and smooth and striated spaces.

This work intents to address two main themes:1) At large, we aim to explain the concept of ‘machinic subjectivity’ coined by Felix Guattari; 2) In a more specific way we tried to analyse the contributions that this concept brings to the understanding of the subjectivity in a more social and wide way considering the heterogeneity not-human, machinic of this production, fact that is strongly noted on the postindustrial capitalism. We have demonstrated that the production of subjectivity is the base industry of this period e the breaking possible points found by Guattari that have been possible by the technological advancements and the forms of social organization of this period. Before the massification and homogenization of subjectivity production the guattarian theory propose a singular and autonomy production from a ethic-esthetic paradigm based on his concept of ecosophy that propose an articulation ethic-politic of subjectivity, social and environment. The subjectivity is machinic it means that it is a production from socius through heterogenic elements such as social relations, technological and invisible machines, aesthetic field, the economy, the politics etc. Through the concepts of micro-politics, autopoiesis and post-media we saw how a production of subjectivity can be more close to autonomy and singularity

Abstract:
In 1980, Deleuze and Guattari devoted an entire chapter of A Thousand Plateaus to the refrain. More than twenty years previously, in 1956, Guattari used this term in a short clinical report to describe the "stereotypical" responses of a psychotic patient in his care. This first use of the term is the starting point of our study, which then tracks its application in the experimental therapy techniques proposed by Guattari and the way it moves away from its origins in psychiatric and psychoanalytical approaches. Thus, our aim is to reconstruct the history of the relationship between repetition and vital expression in Deleuzoguattarian philosophy. We show how the notion of the refrain is shaped by successively integrating -though crossing, confronting, or combining - analytical approaches of the subject, political upheavals of the 1960s and 1970s, Deleuzian thought on repetition, ethological studies on animal semiotics and the history of music from nursery rhymes to canonic works. This development can be traced starting in Guattari's clinical experiments in La Borde on the concrete effects of repetition in therapeutic practice, all the way through the definition of music as the "deterritorialization of the refrain" in A Thousand Plateaus. Our analysis calls us to look at the ecological dimensions of this concept, by describing, in a pragmatic fashion, how it gradually gains subjective, ethological, and aesthetic consistency as the result of a relational play between expressive variables

Abstract:

Abstract:
The research deals with ideology in general – and politics subjectivation in particular – as read and explained by philosophers such as Althusser, Deleuze and Guattari (but also, inevitably, passing through Spinoza, Marx, Lacan and Foucault). The analysis is dealt with in the perspective of a better understanding of the processes that lead to the birth and keeping (through its daily reproduction) of the State-Form as a Capture Apparatus, concluding with some hypotheses – and very open investigative tracks (theoreticaland practical) – aimed at thinking about a social reorganization that attempts to design different and more egalitarian scenarios of collective life. The gaze focuses on the existence of a duplicity that now demands to be better articulated: a) on the one hand, the obligation to understand the nature, the mechanisms of functioning and the purpose of ideology as a practice of 'subjugation-through-subjectivation'; b) on the otherhand, the primarily political theme of the existence of individualities and collectivities – energies and positions still collocated in the determined conjuncture – yet readables as an expression of an active and inventive subjective presence, creative and not subjugated, capable of acting and re-acting to the mechanisms of interpellation and 'shaping ad-hoc' implemented by the apparatus of general signification of the productive system. In a constant reference to the primary and secondary literature – and on this basis, by making interpretations, analogies and connections of which every responsibility is evidently assumed by the writer –, are here shown unexpected points of contact so far little identified among the authors under exam. This is accomplished by examining their work as it unfolds, especially as it evolves, expands and better specifies (this is the case of Althusser) with a different semantics, which nevertheless reinterprets – in our reading – thesis and positions already taken, making play (in a new form) categories already used in older studies, and therefore never abandoned despite every “critical” reading that identifies only breakages and irreconcilable 'coupures'. In this way, we discover elements of closeness of Althusser's latest thesis with the deleuzean and guattarian conception of the subject and of its ‘becoming’

Abstract:
Through nine different atmospheres, distributed in three chapters, it was outlined a theoretical cartography of some studies addressed to Gilles Deleuze & Félix Guattari\'s philosophy of multiplicities, from the following question: what happens between education and the plane of thought of these authors? The Previous atmospheres and the first chapter are on the building of the object of this research from its roaming to the option for such a plane of thought, and not any other one. The second chapter deals with some concepts that allow us to think school education while in the absence of the subject of education, traditionally considered the purpose and the ultimate end of the pedagogical task; thus the reason for the option for Deleuze\'s pedagogical concept. The last chapter argues which is the place of identity as psychic fiction that school has helped us to build since its origins, as well as it discuss the coming-to-be of education through the analysis of the effects of disruption, resistance and e creation developed in 11 essays that face the pedagogical tradition with new weapons. Furnished with the concepts of Deleuze & Guattari\'s plane of thought, and with other ones created from them, the authors make an experimentation that tears apart the conceptions of representation and of recognition connected with the subject\'s idea of education, unveiling the artificialities of production and corruption of the subjectivities by capitalism. The last atmosphere, which embraces Deleuzes\' final essay: Immanence: a life..., gathers the resounding effects picked up by this minor part of the present educational thought, which wishes to promote chances of the school to become privileged locus of the composing of desiring forces able to enlarge the potency to say yes to other forms of existence; forms willing, if necessary, to create \"war machines\" used to disintegrating everything that hinders life, be it at school, or outside it.

__________________________________________________________________________________________
ABSTRACT: The dissertation consists of an investigation about the relationship produced between the philosophy of Deleuze & Guattari and the art of music. The research proposed here is done through the set of themes and concepts worked in the book A Thousand Plateaus (1980). The relationship between philosophy and music produced by this book is quite peculiar because of a continuity between his concepts and a musical – practical, experimental, technical, abstract – notional universe. From the first to the third chapter our issues are: at first, the problem of time in Deleuze; second: the becomings of music, the historical and "trans-historical" character of the musical experience, texts and musical compositions that call into question the notions of silence and listening, and the music conceived as "force capture"; on the third place, the latter theme is unfolded amid an investigation on the concept of refrain. Having done this route, this text proposes a return to the problem of time, and a foray into the architecture of a sound synthesizer. In the end, our issue is the synthesis, of sound and thought.

Abstract:
This research presents a lecture of the political challenges of the idea of geophilosophy conceived by Deleuze and Guattari. The perspective that guides this thesis is lead by the relationship of "immanence and city" presented in "What is philosophy?" - the last piece of collaborative work by the two philosophers. In their own words, the city creates and offers a medium to the philosophical thought, a sort of "environment" or "atmosphere" since being developed in Greece, a radical immanence and heterogeneity through it a common place. Given this, to understand the value of this medium that converts philosophy in geophilosophy, multiple references will be presented and analysed. We can synthesize this approach in the following words: if the city appears for philosophy as a medium or atmosphere, it is because those make possible both heterogeneity and conflict, the fundamental elements of thought and citizen praxis. But at the same time, in front of Plato's Metaphysics, the conflict and heterogeneity emerges as a menace that must be controlled, domesticated or expelled of the perfect city to reach the conservation of the order of words and the order of movements of the souls of the individuals, the superior order that must govern the city. We decide to take this argument between these two approaches of the city and conflict to analyse three moments in history: the Greek world, the Renaissance and Modernity, and finally the contemporary world. The reason for this is found in what we think is important to be remarked: the tension between "order-organism" and "conflict-heterogeneity". Our research tries to understand and explain on the one hand the control of heterogeneity through the conception and practice of organism in philosophy and urbanism, on the other hand, the expression of conflict a singular becoming of immanence

Abstract:
Chapter One consists in a more complete survey of the writings of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari on the works of James Joyce than has previously been available, together with an overview of Deleuzian philosophy. The focus in the first chapter is on Deleuze and Deleuze and Guattari's reading of philosophers and writers alike as 4 symptornatologists' of their times and the ethico-political beliefs which they implicitly share with Joyce. I relate this to Hardt and Negri's political speculations. The conceptual 'tools' which make up 'schizoanalysis' are set out. The second chapter uses these tools in a 'symptomatological' diagnosis by first setting out and then going beyond Joyce's depiction of the 'paralysis' of the populace in Dubliners and A Portrait to his fuller understanding of our problematic situation in modernity depicted and diagnosed in the masochism of Bloom in Ulysses. In Chapter Three, I look at the epiphany, Deleuze's concept of Joyce's 'epiphanic machine', 'duration' as understood by Bergson and Deleuze, and the Deleuzian concept of 'affect' as potentially liberatory insights, after the preceding focus on negative 4 symptornatological' diagnoses. Together with a critique of the prevailing views of Joyce's epiphany I analyse three stories in Dubliners as illustrative of Deleuze's understanding of the concept of the epiphany. In the fourth and fifth chapters I focus on Issy in the Wake read in terms of the 'bird-girl' of A Portrait and couple this with the Deleuzian concept of the 'girl' as a crucial, but misunderstood, node in what can be seen as the 'rhizomatic assemblage' or 'network' constituting the 'epiphanic machine' of the Wake. In Chapter Four, after first setting out the range of readings of Issy available in current Joycean criticism, I look at 'The Mime of Mick Nick and the Maggies' (FW219.18-252.21) in terms of a further Joycean challenge to modernity's 'oedipalising' tendencies through Izod/ Issy. Here, I place a final emphasis on the significance of incest and the incest taboo in 'the Mime' as the culmination of Joyce's 'symptomatological' diagnosis of modernity, and in counterbalancing this, his use of the 'affect' of colour to offer us a productive 'line of flight'. In Chapter Five I recapitulate on Deleuze's highlighting of the letter in his positive comments on the Wake and then, by using some established discussions in Joycean criticism as an introduction, engage in a reading of Issy's letter (FW 279F 1) as the Wakean 'line of flight' by reading 'her' as liberatory 'desiring machine' with all of its ethico-political potentialities.

Abstract:
This research aims at examining intersections, resonances and differences among certain aspects of the thought of Wilhelm Reich and that of the founders of schizoanalysis, Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari. We have thus followed a trend in Brazilian researchs of establishing a dialogue between Reichs work and that of other authors, as well as between Reichian and schizoanalytic formulations present in other articles, dissertations and theses. Our focus dwells specifically upon the critical reasoning of the chosen authors a theme that may bring in contributions to academic investigations, since a whole field can be explored in that subject, and, as far as we can tell, it has not been explored yet. In methodological terms, we have listed up publications that mention the propositions of Reich, Deleuze and Guattari. Besides noticing that they go beyond national boundaries, we have also seen that this dialogue started more than 30 years ago, and was taken up after 1994. This material sums up to 24 texts, in which we can note two groups with distinct characteristics. In the first one, a short reference to Reich and to schizoanalysis is made, without a focused communication between them; in the second group of texts, on the contrary, a conceptual debate is sought for. We place this dissertation among the second group, since it constitutes a theoretical work, focusing on the discussion of ideas brought up by Reich, Deleuze and Guattari and also by researchers of their work. Summing up, insofar as a critical approach is concerned, we have observed the explicit cultural battle of Reich, equally highlighting the proposal of schizoanalysis in favor of dissent and the production of social transformation. However, if, on the one hand, we see this peculiar convergence, on the other hand, the study of Deleuze on difference comes as an influence in our dissertation in the sense of putting aside the craving for similarities, since recognizing distinctions establishes the possibility of intensive vibration. We aim, then, at pointing out undeniable divergences between the Reichian approach and that of Deleuze and Guattari, and to set forth multiple interferences. Thus, throughout the depuration of the topics in our work, we intend to give a place for the unusual formation of heterocompositions among the formulations of Reich and of Deleuze and Guattari. We show how such an exercise of communication establishes a rich field of correspondences and affectations, and, realizing the potential of this dialogue, we suggest themes for upcoming further studies.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In Peter Weiss debut Från ö till ö (1947) the ‘I’ travels from island to island as a castaway. The island here can signify, or work as a synecdoche for exile and the feeling of isolation that exile often induces. But the movement from island to island also implies a restless state: Peter Weiss shifting from painting to writing to filmmaking and theatre, from German to Swedish and then back to German. The years during exile and the years that followed the exile until his breakthrough in Germany with Schatten des körpers des Kütchens (1960), Abschied von den Eltern (1961) and Fluchtpunkt (1962), were the formative years of Peter Weiss authorship. In Sweden he abandoned a Hesse-influenced new-romanticism – an aesthetical and political dead-end in the 1940s – and oriented towards the Swedish modernists – fyrtiotalisterna – discovered psychoanalysis and became politically “aware”. These happenings – or machines as this essay likes to view them – all influenced and produced Weiss Swedish prose which is this essay’s main focus. Following Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari this essay understands Weiss Swedish authorship as a minor authorship. As Franz Kafka was in the German language, Peter Weiss was a stranger in Swedish and in Sweden, a “foreign bird” as one critic calls him. As a minor writer he is a political writer, the political realities are connected to him, his half-Jewish body is intertwined in the (bio)political realities of mid-century Germany; and those realities are visible in his prose, even if he himself, or his contemporaries, see him as an unpolitical author. Therefore there is no unpolitical and political period in the œuvre of Peter Weiss. Instead there are different flows and movements, from the political, from the production of the psychoanalytic-, modernist- and romantic-machine among others. There are lines of flights, deterritorialization and reterritorialization. This essay aims to follow some of these lines in the Swedish prose of Peter Weiss.

Gilles Deleuze e Félix Guattari, autores do século XX, criaram a Esquizoanálise e estudaram várias áreas de conhecimento, dentre as quais, a Psicologia.

Abstract:
The notion of « scene » being, as has been shown by Esa Kirkkopelto in his book Le théâtre de l’expérience – Contributions à la théorie de scène, a concept-limite (a limit-concept) which becomes distinguishable nowadays because of or thanks to a certain seclusion of theatre, puts us in front of one of its threads which is the one of sound and of music. Because the scene, if it seems to also and mainly deal with theatre as for being concerned by its optical side, what about its relation to and with sound, and thus to and with voice and music, but also time and space ? This thesis project intends to follow up this problem in a kaleidoscopic study which, on one side, mobilizes some of the philosophy of Deleuze and Guattari (especially as to be found in Mille plateaux) as well as what Sartre has been able to formulate in his book L’imaginaire, and, on the other side, the investigation of some chosen artistic oeuvres by Beckett and Feldman, but also two texts of Rilke and Jaccottet. On this line of multiple resonances, the project put and puts to prove of value the notion of scénophonie (scenophony) towards which it runs, but which at the same time has allowed it to come into existence and to pursue. It is a contribution to the research and science of the scene

Drawing from Deleuze and Guattari’s theory of the Anti-Oedipus, this thesis explores how Deleuze and Guattari’s notion of desire as a free and productive force can be seen as a disruptive element in a society that relies on repression of the subject for its stability. Furthermore, this thesis explores how the novel questions the understanding of civilisation being dependent on the individual’s submission to the Oedipus triangulation and in extension the Oedipal capitalist separation between the public and the private sphere. Ultimately, the main argument claims that Oedipal repression of desire only allows desire to invest in a restricted number of representations, making other identities than the heteronormative suspicious or invisible.  Hogg depicts a society where capitalism commodifies everything, and need the Oedipal subject to ensure its stability. The characters in the novel that do not subject themselves to the capitalist discourse escape the subjection to the Oedipal triangulation, and are thus free to invest their desire in any way they choose, primarily in non-heterosexual and salirophiliac activities. These characters can be seen as schizoid subjects that are constantly threatening to expose the fragility of the social structure by embodying a contrast to the hegemonic discourse and therefore constantly question its authority as main creator of reason and reality.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to problematise the hegemonic set of relations that has been aligned to gender and sex within the framework of binary thought when reading Woolf’s narrative of gender. Woolf’s elusive and intense style, the plasticity and ambivalence of her language and her complex, polyhedric characters make of Virginia Woolf’s literature a literature of her own; a radical literature that is able to draw new undefined landscapes, unsettled territories, dislocating and challenging routes mapped out through her experimental method, her crossing of generic boundaries, and her fluid and limitless characterisations. This project focuses on Woolf’s male characters as a reaction to the constraints that gender studies have generally imposed upon her writings. Two main objections have been considered; on the one hand, much of the critical effort related to gender and Woolf’s writing has focused on femininity, by ignoring her radical male characters. On the other hand, despite vast female-centred studies and the small amount of studies focused on masculinities there is a number of scholars who have dealt with rigid and fluid male characters (studies that assimilate Woolf’s work on masculinities to the discourse of patriarchy, war, imperialism and fascism; psychoanalytic perspectives on gender; studies that focus on homosexuality; and studies that focus on androgyny). However, most of these approaches to masculinities in Woolf have inscribed gender/sex in rigid binary taxonomies. My reading of Deleuze’s and Guattari’s collaborative body of work (their fluid conception of individuation and their concept of difference-in-itself) together with my reading of Men’s studies (Connell, Kimmel, Segal) and Difference Feminism (Irigaray, Jardine, Braidotti, Grosz, Olkowski, Colebrook) constitute the theoretical framework for this thesis in order to explore Woolf’s masculinities beyond gender/sex binary oppositions. This thesis has aimed to contribute to the field of Woolf Studies with an analysis of both Woolf’s criticism of rigid discourses of masculinity and by proving Woolf’s radical concept of gender and her proposal of alternative gender behaviours. My two case studies have been Septimus Warren Smith and Orlando. I have proved these two novelistic characters to be polymorphous and multilayered figurations of gender and paradigmatic examples of the Deleuzo-Guattarian process of becoming-woman (Septimus as the empty BwO and Orlando as the full BwO). Finally, this thesis evaluates the impact that Woolf’s visionary narrative of gender has had on more contemporary narratives. In order to analyse a more contemporary response to Woolf’s narrative I chose to work with two cinematic texts. This project focuses on Marleen Gorris’s Mrs Dalloway (1997) and Sally Potter’s Orlando (1992) as new texts that extend, reread, implement and reappropriate Woolf’s work to respond to different social demands in relation to gender. It analyses the extent to which the gender narrative of these two cinematic texts fail or succeed in projecting radical figurations of masculinities beyond man/ woman, male/female, heterosexual/homosexual taxonomies. This thesis approaches literature conceptually, from a philosophical perspective. An interdisciplinary methodology has been used. The whole nature of the project is interdisciplinary in its focus on both different media, novels and film adaptations, and in the crossing of literature, film studies, philosophy, and cultural studies. The main focus throughout is Virginia Woolf’s novelistic narrative of gender and two late twentieth century approaches to Woolf’s gender narrative carried out by two film adaptations of Woolf. The analysis of Gorris’s and Potter’s adaptations has been purely narratological. Formalist devices of the cinematic media have been used in narrative terms. That is to say, I have analysed the transformation, adaptation, amplification, or re-evaluation that these two more contemporary cinematic narratives have carried out from Woolf’s complex narrative of gender at two specific contexts with given social demands.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
In 1955, American artist Dorothea Tanning abandoned her figurative Surrealist renderings of dream-like scenarios in favor of a complexly abstract and fragmented style of painting. With few exceptions, the ways in which Tanning’s later works function independently of her earlier paintings tends to be downplayed in the scholarship on her oeuvre. Equally sparse is the scholarship on Tanning’s dog imagery, which pervades her oeuvre but becomes most apparent in her later phase. This thesis seeks to shift attention toward Tanning’s later abstract paintings; it also seeks to fill the gap in scholarship on Tanning’s dogs. Specifically, through the study of five Tanning paintings from the late 1950s and 1960s, with the theoretical aid of Deleuze and Guattari’s conception of the becoming-animal, this thesis will investigate how Tanning’s post-1955 paintings create and promote new ways for viewers to think about the relations between humans and animals in the human-dominated modern world.

Full text
Abstract:
In what ways can a relationship be drawn between contemporary art practice dealing with ruptured/destabilised space and Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s concept of lines of flight? This is the starting point of my thesis. Central to the question is the control of space through mapping, measurement or invention of categories (classification systems) that fulfill a vital pragmatic role of organising, locating and identifying. Postmodern cultural theorists recognise that these categories can also condition and place boundaries on the way we relate to or understand our environment, and for that reason they seek to examine and shake the foundations of Western systems of organisation. For Postmodern theorists the key to alleviating the unwanted symptoms is to identify the locus of power and overturn it. Deleuze and Guattari stand in opposition to an externally imposed system of organisation, however their approach takes into account organisation at a micro level. They developed a toolbox of concepts that could potentially be deployed to bring forth a subjectivity based on creativity rather than control. The focus of my writing is on Deleuze and Guattari’s concept of lines of flight. They propose a way of being and thinking that allows for these creative connections to emerge. These molecular connections have the potential to reconfigure habitual or molar ways of being or imagining. Deleuze and Guattari define space in terms of striated or smooth (space that is interchangeable, and in constant flow). Their spatial approach is indispensable in providing a context for my discussion of lines of flight. Deleuze and Guattari also recognise a social dimension to space that allows for connections to be made between actual (architectural) spaces and socially constructed value systems. In my practice I am interested in how a sense of destabilisation and deterritorialisation can be activated in space via installation to challenge the placement of socially conditioned or self-constructed boundaries. This thesis consists of 25,000 word thesis and 3 DVDs evidencing the creative component of my practice-led research and associated exhibitions. Both the written thesis and creative practice respond to the same question and explore the analytical and pragmatic effectiveness of the concept of lines of flight in relation to contemporary art dealing with ruptured space.

_______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
This report is the work of motivations and concerns about what can be drawn from Foucault's intervention into historian practice. Taken as the practice of catching what is convenient for each historian, he/she takes ownership of the legacy tools elsewhere to produce a history surrounded by current problems. Like a black hole that seeks not let the light escape, the historical constraints do not work - for historical analysis proposed in this paper - by themselves, this analysis seeks the lines of escape, the yarn that resists. Lines overflow faster than light, the intensity lines of thinking that can unweave as the weaver girl throwing the fast roller from one side to the other, parts of the fabric of domination that history can date as tissues someday. The study follows the trails of what in historiographic practice can think the multiple.

The present work aims at developing a study of the contemporary subjectivation processes, departing from the influence of the capitalist system on them. For so, a theoretical articulation will be drawn among the writings of Theodor W. Adorno – frankfurtian theorist – and Félix Guattari- theorist and institutional analyst, who acts in several domains: psychiatry, anthropology and politics. Such thinkers based their studies on subjectivity, distinctive moments of the capitalist system of production and consumption. In such articulation, we take the concepts of “individualization” and “singularity” developed by Adorno and Guattari, respectively. Therewith, we aim, by opposing the ideas of the authors, to increase the understanding over the process of constitution of contemporary subjectivity, as well as to perceive the existence of “individual” and/or “singularized” existence. It was developed a theoretical research ruled in bibliographical review of the respective authors’ writings as well as of other speakers who made possible the enrichment of understanding concerning the object of study. To reach the proposed goal, we followed some steps: in the first chapter we exposed a possible intersection between Adorno and Guattari, departing from the philosophical tendency of the ontology of the present; in the following chapter, we discussed Adorno’s theory and the process of individuation; then we went through the Guatarri’s theory and the singularization movement; at last, we looked up articulations and tried to catch a glimpse into alliances between the two theorists. By the end of the research we emphasized the need to consider each of the theories in accordance with the Theoretical-Philosophical tradition to which it is affiliated. Therefore, it is made impossible a logical articulation among what the two of them have as important for the understanding of our object. Nevertheless, it is departing from the tension and contradiction existing among them that we can reach a better understanding concerning the processes of subjectivation in the present days, which is not that about which Adorno’s reflexions would be devoted to neither the same proclaimed by Guattari.

Bibliography: leaves 138-149. This thesis investigates the theoretical and practical importance of nomadic ways of life for architecture. Nomadology is a construction of Deleuze and Gattari's 'counter-philosophy' challenging authenticity and propriety, in this case, in the context of architecture. It describes how nomadology may challenge static, permanent, heroically solitary ways of working and dwelling, and suggests strategies - diagramming, ephemerality, movement, and collaboration - as ways of reconciling nomadism and architecture.

Abstract:

Questioning the ecological effects, not only from environmental view but also from social and mental of human habitation in a planet that passes through deep transformation, this research explores the area of Strategic Design for Sustainability, in order to map its most relevant concepts and get from its manifest discourse the underlying content that engenders them, emphasizing a special attention to the structured questions and to the political motives that formalize them. For this, we selected part of a special author?s research, the Italian teacher Ezio Manzini, as the main concept synthesizer of this new research area, as well as an area of some speakers who were privileged by their connection with the used method - schizoanalitic cartography - and also by the nearness with the ecological thematic line: the Ecosophy of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari and the Cognitive Ecology of Pierre Lévy. Summing up, we proposed some changes in the concept web that was mapped with the objective of singularizing the theoretical-project course of the Strategic Design's new area for Sustainability.

Abstract:
This essay looks at subjectivity in Virginia Woolf’s The Waves employing a psychoanalytic approach and using the theories of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari. Woolf’s relation to the theories of her contemporary Sigmund Freud was unclear. Psychoanalytic scholarship on Woolf’s writings, nevertheless, established itself in 1980’s as a dominant scholarly topic and has been growing since. However, the rigidity and medicalizing discourse of psychoanalysis make it poorly compatible with Woolf’s feminist, anti-individualist writing. This essay is a reading of The Waves, in which psychoanalytic theory is infused with a Deleuzo-Guattarian approach. The theories of psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan, and especially his concept of the Other, together with Rosi Braidotti’s concept of nomadic subjectivity, are used as relevant tools for thinking about subjectivity in the context of The Waves. The resultant reading is a criticism of psychoanalysis. In this reading, two characters are looked at in detail: Percival and Bernard. Percival emerges as the Lacanian Other, who, situated at the central nexus of power, symbolises the tyrannies of individuality and masculinity. Simultaneously, Percival is detached from the metaphysical world of the novel. His death marks a shift from oppressive individuality towards nomadic subjectivity. For Bernard, nomadic subjectivity is a flight from the dead and stagnating centre towards periphery, where new ethics can be negotiated. The essay concludes with the implications of such reading: the affirmation of nomadic subjectivity makes the Deleuzo-Guattarian approach more relevant in the context of Woolf, whereas psychoanalytic striving towards structure, dualism, and focus on pathology are rejected as incompatible with her texts.

Abstract:
Referring to the theory of minor literature developed by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari in their work Kafka : pour une littérature mineure, this thesis investigates contemporary English writing in and about Quebec as a possible minor phenomenon. Motivated by the debate around the affirmation of a possible Anglo-Québécois community, I investigate if such a literature has the elements to reterritorialize itself within Quebec as an Anglo-Québécois literature. This thesis analyzes in total six works, three plays and three novels: David Fennario's Balconville, Vittorio Rossi's Paradise by the River, Ann Lambert's Very Heaven, Marianne Ackerman's Jump, Linda Leith's Birds of Passage, and Jeffrey Moore's Prisoner in a Red-Rose Chain. Therefore, the main objective of the thesis is to parallel Deleuze and Guattari's theory of minor literature with its three features, where minor works are written in a deterritorialized major language, demonstrate a political potential and are built upon a collective enunciation, to six"AngloQuébécois" works in order to see to what extent this corpus can be read as a minor literature.

Abstract:
If Deleuze and Guattari partly proceeded with producing their Anti-Oedipus with Artaud (1972) from a recipitation of the essence of Lacan's work, it's aise in the wake of this book that Lacan, moving towards a psychoanalysis of the Real, reassessed the matter of psychosis with Joyce. Far from being an alleged epistemological caesura, insanity accounts for the unconscious. Clinical work with madness enables to further investigate the mechanisms of the unconscious in relationship to the other. Subsequently, in light of this clinical work, the psychoanalytic technique, its links with nosography, along with some classical metapsychological concepts, are bound to be re-evaluated and revised. But giving rise to this fresh praxis- based and epistemological thinking entails a materialist approach to the unconscious as a space of productior and reproduction and net merely a scene of intrapsychic representations always-already-there that the clinician would "discover". Considering the unconscious to its full extent as a paradigm that the clinical work demands and updates sheds a new light on the conditions of possibility of psychoanalytic technique. Psychoanalysis may thus recover the true reach of its impact, beyond the temptation of "psychoanalysis-as- an-ideology" that used it to extend the social forms of domination, hiding them in the shadow of its nosographic constructions supporting the psychoanalytic psychiatric operation Foucault revealed. Relieved of its ideological guidance and idealistic coating, the analytic act, far from remaining abstract, can be conceived and accepted as an operation of an ever and full clinical and political consistency

This thesis discusses the users' involvement into the organization of public services (especially within the framework of social and rehabilitation policies). The first part deals with a theory of involvement - forms of commitment and participation. The second and third parts offer an analysis of rehabilitation policies (revenu minimum d'insertion, "the minimum rehabilitation income") and intend to show the importance of users' involvement in the enforcement of these policies. These reflexions on involvement are closely associated to the questionning of the new realities of power. How do the public policies manage to obtain users' involvement? this involvement theory intends to realize a convergence of michel foucault's theory of power and gilles deleuze and felix guattari's own theory of subjectivity

Abstract:
This thesis is an interdisciplinary study of the aesthetics of movement in Gilles Deleuze’s writings and in Merce Cunningham’s choreographies. But it is also a study of the movement that arises when the two meet in a series of variations, where also their respective working partners Félix Guattari and John Cage enter. It is a textual happening where the random juxtaposition between seemingly unrelated areas, philosophy and dance, gives rise to arbitrary connections. It is a textual machine, composed of seven parts. First, the methodological architecture of the juxtaposition is introduced and it is shown how this relates to the materials (the philosophy of Deleuze and the aesthetics of Cunningham), the relation between the materials, and the respective contexts of the materials. The presence of movement in Deleuze’s thinking is then presented and the figure of immobile movement is defined. This figure is a leitmotif of the analyses. It is argued that this figure of immobile movement is not only a stylistic element but has implications on a philosophical level, implications that materialise in Deleuze’s texts. Then follow four parts that build a heterogeneous whole. The analysis of movement is continued through four juxtapositions of particular texts and particular choreographies. Through these juxtapositions, different aspects of movement appear and are discussed: the relation between movement and sensation, movement in interaction with other arts, movement as a means of taking the body to its limit, movement as transformation. Through these analyses, the aesthetics of Cunningham is put into new contexts. The analyses also put into relief Deleuze’s use of figures of movement, and these suddenly acquire another kind of importance. In the seventh and concluding part, all this is brought into play.

Abstract:

The aim of this study is to construct as philosophical conceptualization of pedagogical attitude. Founded on Martin Buber’s philosophy of dialogue, the construction suggested in the study takes on a normative character, thus understanding pedagogical attitude as a matter of pedagogical creed. The author proposes a construction where existence is understood as a matter of Calling and Respons(e)ibility. Pedagogical attitude is thus understood in accordance with the notion of paying heed, responsibly responding and calling. As a consequence this conceptualization calls on the teacher to speak authentically, serve, embrace a loving leadership, provoke and dare to take risks.

Within the concept of Calling and Respons(e)ibility, “calling” means addressing a particular other, whilst respons(e)ibility is a term chosen to make the concept connote to the response as well as the responsibility taken in relation to a particular calling. The concept of Calling and Respons(e)ibility is understood as closely connected to the religious concept of vocation, although recycled in a secularized meaning, thereby put forth as a matter of realizing the fate of the teacher, the student as well as the field/subject. The concept of Calling and Respons(e)ibility is in the study connected to the notions of “mothering”, obedience and adjustment as well as to the notions of responsibility, fidelity and being enterprising.

Using a methodological approach of philosophical conceptualization suggested by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, the study sets out to reuse such old theological concepts as vocation, calling, paying heed and responding responsibly in new forms in a pedagogical context, thereby intending to discover, articulate and discern new aspects of that context.

By conceptualizing pedagogical attitude on the basis of an existential, normative and relational perspective, using the notion of calling and respons(e)ability, the study aspires to contribute to the ongoing conversation concerning teacher-student-relationship.

Abstract:
Mauritius is often cited as the successful example of the cohabitation of different cultures; as well as a plural society reconciled with its contradictions. But beyond the clichés for tourists and underneath the diversity of religious practices and cultural rituals specific to each community of the Mauritian rainbow, operates a power structure based on the very concept of the “difference of colour” and which constitutes the foundation for the multiplication of census categories. This in turn produces a multiplication of categories of political representation based on cultural, community, religious, ethnic and linguistic categories. This thesis is not intended to be a history of colonialism. Nor is it a history of the sugar industrial revolution, and much less an anthropology of inter-culturality in Mauritius. Its only ambition is to grasp the structural rationality of Mauritian multiculturalism through its confrontation with poststructuralist philosophy, and in particular through the political philosophies of Gilles Deleuze, Félix Guattari and Michel Foucault. We thus believe that the Best-Loser System - a device at the heart of the Mauritian electoral system - is a machine for producing identity divisions in the system of political representation, which allows us a privileged gateway to think about the structural dimension of Mauritian multiculturalism. Thus, we particularly wanted to investigate the notion of axiomatic in Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s philosophy - together with the conceptual sets that derive from it, like the notions of minority and majority. Our hypothesis is the following: Mauritian multiculturalism is a form of governmentality which is founded in the production and the multiplication of identities; identities which are then maintained in a logic of the struggle for recognition - antagonistic struggles in relation to the structure of representation, and which require recognition and registration in this same structure -; and it is from this logic of struggle that an axiomatic operates which inscribes the new axioms in the structure of political representation. These struggles are nothing new in the history of Mauritius, far from it. They find their sources in 1642 with the first maroon slaves. The emergence of the “séga tipik” is also part of this line of flight and constitutes what Deleuze and Guattari have called a minor art, which we think is extremely important to explore. We have also been witnessing the appearance of a Mauritian cinema whose reflection revolves most often around the world of sugar plantations and living together in Mauritius. The film Lonbraz Kann by filmmaker David Constantin seems to us, for example, to be deeply important because it tackles, with the means that are specific to cinema, some of the issues that we will sweep away in this present work. Finally, we will explore the concept of fabulation, a concept which appeared late in Deleuze’s work, but which we think is essential to consider because it allows us another light on the political objectives of the Mauritian arts. Thus, we see, through the notion of fabulation, the surge of another Mauritius through its artists. Cinema and music especially, but also the new collectives who fight for the protection of lagoons and oceans, confront us with other significant regimes, other codes too. They prepare the ground for struggles that can constitute as many new problems that circumvent the logic of the categories founded in racialized subjectivities, and which confront themselves directly to the immanent logic of the axiomatic
