Abstract:
Metod: En integrativ litteraturöversikt användes genomgående i uppsatsen. Sökningarna utfördes i databaserna Cinahl, PsychINFO, PubMed och SveMed+. Resultat: Fyra teman identifierades.

Williams, Mark David, and Mark David Williams. "Evapotranspiration in Southeast Arizona Semi-Arid Watersheds: Walnut Gulch and Cienega Creek." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/626782.

Full text
Abstract:
Two simple evaporation models, the Priestley-Taylor model, and a Penman Monteith based model, were calibrated using data from meteorological-flux stations in the USDA-ARS experimental watershed. The residual eddy covariance technique employed propeller vertical anemometers for measurement of sensible heat. These limited frequency response instruments significantly underestimated the sensible heat flux, resulting in an overestimation of the latent flux. By adjusting the sensible heat frequency response correction factors the energy balance evaporation estimates were more closely matched to the mass-balance estimates. The models performed well during calibration, but poorly for the validation period. The two simple models were also calibrated to BA TS-modeled latent heat fluxes at a site in the Tucson mountains. With calibration, they reproduced the BATS output reasonably well. Finally, the two models were applied to the CienegaCreek watershed, and their results support the assumption of earlier investigators that the precipitation and evaporation essentially balance for the basin's desert grasslands.

Timsit, Martine. Paris 10, 1996. http://www.theses.fr/1996PA100035.

Full text
Abstract:
The conditions created by the six days war (5-10 june 1967) generated the apparition in israel of several religious parties and movements, which main objective is to oppose (by force if needed) the retrocession of the occupied territories. For these orthodox jews, this act appears incompatible with the covenant concluded between god and abraham concerning the gift of eretz israel to the jewish people (erets israel being the hebrew term for the land of israel in her biblical frontiers). At the core of this tendency figures gush emunim ("bloc of the faithful"), an extra-parliamentary movement created in february 1974. By multiplying jewish settlements across the "green line", this movement wants to prevent any peace accord leading to territorial compromises. Through this object, we propose to question the relevance of the cultural analysis, which is frequently used to explain the actual phenomenon of religious protest. Among the numerous failings that affect this mode of interpretation, we insist on the inconveniences generated by the static approach of the cultural "systems". In our study, we trie to demonstrate how the collective representations constitute social and historical constructions, and are for this reason subject to transformations. The gush emunim movement which adheres to ultranationalist or ultra-zionist ideas, even though the first attitude of the religious actors was to condemn zionism, seems to provide an excellent illustration of the circumstances under which, and the mechanisms by which, occurs a "cultural innovation"

Abstract:

The quantification and prediction of soil properties is fundamental to further understanding the Critical Zone (CZ). In this study we aim to quantify and predict soil properties within a forested catchment, Marshall Gulch, AZ. Input layers of soil depth (modeled), slope, Saga wetness index, remotely sensed normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and national agriculture imagery program (NAIP) bands 3/2 were determined to account for 95% of landscape variance and used as model predictors. Target variables including soil depth (cm), carbon (kg/m2), clay (%), Na flux (kg/m 2), pH, and strain are predicted using multivariate linear step-wise regression models. Our results show strong correlations of soil properties with the drainage systems in the MG catchment. We observe deeper soils, higher clay content, higher carbon content, and more Na loss within the drainages of the catchment in contrast to the adjacent slopes and ridgelines.

Abstract:
Geographic information systems (GIS) have improved our ability to accurately model and assess landscape parameters and processes. These systems offer a significant improvement in time and manpower needed to complete landscape studies. Too often, however, GIS projects have relied heavily on data that has not been integrated with field work or represents an abstraction of reality. A high-resolution database was constructed for the Walnut Gulch Experimental Watershed. New methods for delineating channels and acquiring data were developed to promote field integration. Simultaneously, a field measurement program of over 200 channel cross-sections was undertaken on the same area. The results from the GIS analysis and field research were integrated using statistical analysis. Strong deterministic relationships were derived between channel shape variables and watershed parameters. Channel shape was found to be influenced strongly by channel order and several watershed parameters, principally watershed size and the maximum flow length within a watershed.

Thomas, Natalie. "The taphonomy of a carboniferous lagerstätte : the invertebrates of the Bear Gulch Limestone Member." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/30457.

Full text
Abstract:
The Bear Gulch Limestone Member is proposed herein as the new name for the Bear Gulch Beds of central Montana, USA. This member contains articulated and exceptionally well preserved fossils.;Taphonomic investigation, employing scanning electron microscopy, electron dispersive x-ray analysis, element mapping, electron microprobe analysis and Raman spectroscopy reveals that original carbonate biominerals underwent early dissolution, whereas original apatite was converted to carbonate fluorapatite. Non-mineralised tissues were rapidly replaced by apatite and more rarely calcite, or are evident as tissue imprints. In some cases fossil morphology is preserved in organic action. The sediment lacks both clay and iron and so previous models for carbon preservation cannot be invoked. Geochemical analysis shows that calcite and quartz dominate the sediment.;Bottom water conditions were periodically inimical to benthos. Reducing environments within the sediment and relatively rapid burial rates must have assisted in the preservation processes, including macroscavenger inhibition.;Coiled cephalopods are found encrusted with Sphenothallus, 'microconchids', bryozoans and orbiculoid brachiopods. Sphenothallus demonstrates holoperipheral cover and preferred growth orientation on two cephalopods. This suggests that sphenothallids colonised the cephalopods in vivo. Articulated polychaete jaw apparatuses, Brochosogenys reidiae and Symmetrioprion n. sp. are described. The latter is the first record of the genus from the Carboniferous and the first assemblage of Symmetrioprionidae found with the remains of its body.;Halicyne montanaensis n. sp. is recorded from the deposit. Several specimens with different styles of preservation have enabled its identification as a new species of cycloid.

"Colloids and organic matter complexation control trace metal concentration-discharge relationships in Marshall Gulch stream waters." AMER GEOPHYSICAL UNION, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/622503.

Full text
Abstract:
This study combined concentration-discharge analyses (filtration at 0.45 m), cascade filtrations (at 1.2, 0.4, and 0.025 m) and asymmetrical flow field flow fractionation (AF4) to probe the influence of colloidal carriers (dissolved organic matter and inorganic nanoparticles) on observed concentration-discharge relationships for trace metals in a 155 ha forested catchment of the Santa Catalina Mountains Critical Zone Observatory (SCM CZO), Arizona. Many major elements (Na, Mg, Si, K, Ca) show no colloidal influence, and concentration-discharge relationships for these species are explained by previous work. However, the majority of trace metals (Al, Ti, V, Mn, Fe, Cu, Y, REE, U) show at least some influence of colloids on chemistry when filtered at the standard 0.45 m cutoff. Concentration-discharge slopes of trace metals with modest colloidal influence are shallow (approximate to 0.3) similar to that measured for dissolved organic carbon (DOC, 0.24), whereas elements with greater colloidal influence have steeper concentration-discharge slopes approaching that of Al (0.76), the element with the largest colloidal influence in this study (on average 68%). These findings are further supported by AF4 measurements that show distinct and resolvable pools of low hydrodynamic diameter DOC-sized material coexistent with larger diameter inorganic colloids, and the ratio of these carriers changes systematically with discharge because the DOC pool has a concentration-discharge relationship with shallower slope than the inorganic colloidal pool. Together these data sets illustrate that positive concentration-discharge slopes of trace metals in stream waters may be explained as the relative partitioning of trace metals between DOC and inorganic colloids, with contributions of the latter likely increasing as a result of increased prevalence of macropore flow.

Goodrich, David Charles. "Geometric simplification of a distributed rainfall-runoff model over a range of basin scales." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/185051.

Full text
Abstract:
Distributed rainfall-runoff models are gaining widespread acceptance; yet, a fundamental issue that must be addressed by all users of these models is definition of an acceptable level of watershed discretization (geometric model complexity). The level of geometric model complexity is a function of basin and climatic scales as well as the availability of input and verification data. Equilibrium discharge storage is employed to develop a quantitative methodology to define a level of geometric model complexity commensurate with a specified level of model performance. Equilibrium storage ratios are used to define the transition from overland to channel-dominated flow response. The methodology is tested on four subcatchments in the USDA-ARS Walnut Gulch Experimental Watershed in southeastern Arizona. The catchments cover a range of basins scales of over three orders of magnitude. This enabled a unique assessment of watershed response behavior as a function of basin scale. High quality, distributed, rainfall-runoff data were used to verify the model (KINEROSR). Excellent calibration and verification results provided confidence in subsequent model interpretations regarding watershed response behavior. An average elementary channel support area of roughly 15% of the total basin area is shown to provide a watershed discretization level that maintains model performance for basins ranging in size from 1.5 to 631 hectares. Detailed examination of infiltration, including the role and impacts of incorporating small-scale infiltration variability in a distribution sense, into KINEROSR, over a range of soils and climatic scales was also addressed. The impacts of infiltration and channel losses on runoff response increase with increasing watershed scale as the relative influence of storms is diminished in a semi-arid environment such as Walnut Gulch. In this semi-arid environment, characterized by ephemeral streams, watershed runoff response does not become more linear with increasing watershed scale but appears to become more nonlinear.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Xylella fastidiosa is a xylem-dwelling, insect-transmitted gamma-protobacterium that causes pathogenicity in citrus plants and many others important crops such as grapevine, periwinkle, almond, oleander and coffee. In citrus plants, X. fastidiosa causes citrus variegated chlorosis (CVC) or “amarelinho”. Nine enzymes (GumB, C, D, E, F, H, J, K and M) are involved in the biosynthetic pathway of an exopolysaccharide (EPS) called fastidian gum which could be involved in the pathogenicity of the bacterium. These enzymes catalyses sugars addition reactions, polymerization and discharge of the EPS through the bacteria’s membrane. We have used bioinformatic tools to study these enzymes and to understand the gum biosynthesis. The nine enzymes were studied regarding to its secondary structure content, analysis of hidrophobicity and transmembrane regions, and yet function classification. The construction of structural models using sequential homology was shown to be impossible, due to the necessity of homologues molecules whose three-dimensional structures are known. On the other hand, pairwises comparisons of secondary structures showed good results and were realized with GenThreader and THREADER 3.3 programs. Three-dimensional structures to GumB, GumK, GumM, GumJ and GumC enzymes were constructed using MODELLER 6.0a and validated with Procheck and VERIFY 3D programs. To construct the model of GumH (enzyme that catalyse the addiction of a GDP-mannose on a polyprenol phosphate carrier), GenThreader found folding similarities when compared to MurG and UDP-Acetylglucosamine 2-Epimerase (from E. coli), GtfB (from Amycolatopsis orientalis) and beta-GT (from T4 phage). The models are very similar consisting of two alpha/beta open sheet domains, both alike in topology to the Rossmann nucleotide-binding folds, and separated by a deep cleft which probably forms the GDP-mannose binding site. Studies of the interaction between enzyme and docked substrate were carried out using the FLO program. The sequence alignment between GumH and another eleven glycosiltransferases showed several preserved regions including the EX7E motif present on the substrate binding site. The interactions between enzyme-GDP-mannose substrate and the mechanism of the reaction were studied. These analyses emphasize the three-dimensional model constructed for GumH that represents the first structural information for enzymes involved in fastidian gum synthesis.
