Abstract:
Assessment of agromorphological similarities between parents and F1 progenies in the crossing of Dwarf Malayan x Vanuatu Tall coconuts in Côte d’Ivoire ABSTRACT Objectives: The study was conducted to assess the agromorphological resemblance of the F1 NJM x GVT hybrid progenies to those of their parents in Côte d'Ivoire in order to predict the characteristics of the descendants and adopt appropriate cultivation techniques and uses. Methodology and results: Thirty variables were measured on 18 descendants and their male parents GVT and female NJM. It appears that the vegetative characteristics of the NJM x GVT descendants are relatively close to their male GVT sires. Heritability ranges from 10% to 40% for all descriptors. It is higher for C20, LGF, ILE, ILPRF and Déq with a value of 40% that contributed more to the approximation of the descendants of their male parent. Agromorphological gains compared to the two spawners are observed for most characters. The rates vary on average from 0.73% to 84.26% depending on the trait and the sire. Conclusion and application of the results: These results will serve as a guide for breeders as to the expected results of an F1 offspring of large coconut palm crossed by Dwarf coconut tree. These hybrids can be grown and used in the same way as their male parent. Key words: Coconut palm, agromorphological characteristic, NJM x GVT hybrid, heritability, gain.

Abstract:
Many authors, both in Hungary and abroad, have reported on experiments carried out to determine the role of sowing time in maize, but the results are often contradictory. This is hardly surprising, since the maize plant exhibits enormous genetic variability and the hybrids created through selection and inbreeding may have very specific requirements as to sowing date. The year effect, too, often complicates the efforts of scientists to provide clear guidance to farmers on the optimal sowing date for each hybrid.

Abstract:
Hybrid male sterility (HMS) contributes to speciation by restricting gene flow between related taxa. Detailed cytological characterization of reproductive organs in hybrid males is important for identifying phenotypes that can help guide searches of speciation genes. To investigate possible cellular causes of HMS, we performed crosses between closely related species of the Anopheles gambiae complex: An. merus with An. gambiae or An. coluzzii . We demonstrate that HMS in African malaria mosquitoes involves two defects in the reciprocal crosses: a premeiotic arrest of germline stem cells in degenerate testes and a failure of the reductional meiotic division of primary spermatocytes in normal-like testes. The premeiotic arrest in degenerate testes of hybrids is accompanied by a strong suppression of meiotic and postmeiotic genes. Unlike pure species, sex chromosomes in normal-like testes of F1 hybrids are largely unpaired during meiotic prophase I and all chromosomes show various degrees of insufficient condensation. Instead of entering reductional division in meiosis I, primary spermatocytes prematurely undergo an equational mitotic division producing non-motile diploid sperm. Thus, our study identified cytogenetic errors in interspecies hybrids that arise during the early stages of postzygotic isolation.

Abstract:
This study investigated pilots' taxi performance, situation awareness and workload while taxiing with three different head-up display (HUD) symbology formats: Command-guidance, Situation-guidance and Hybrid. Command-guidance symbology provided the pilot with required control inputs to maintain centerline position; Situation-guidance symbology provided conformal, scene-linked navigation information; while the Hybrid symbology combined elements of both symbologies. Taxi performance was assessed with average taxi speed and root mean square error (RMSE) from the centerline. Situation awareness and workload were assessed using a 3- Dimension SART and a 7-point scale, respectively. Taxi speeds were highest and RMSE from centerline lowest with Situation-guidance and Hybrid symbologies. Situation awareness was highest and workload lowest with Situation-guidance and Hybrid symbologies. These results are thought to be due to cognitive tunneling induced by the Command-guidance symbology. Situation-guidance (and Hybrid) HUD symbologies provided a common reference with the environment, which may have supported better distribution of attention.

Abstract:
A challenging rescue task for the underground disaster is to guide survivors in getting away from the dangerous area quickly. To address the issue, an escape guidance path developing method is proposed based on anisotropic underground wireless sensor networks under the condition of sparse anchor nodes. Firstly, a hybrid channel model was constructed to reflect the relationship between distance and receiving signal strength, which incorporates the underground complex communication characteristics, including the analytical ray wave guide model, the Shadowing effect, the tunnel size, and the penetration effect of obstacles. Secondly, a trustable anchor node selection algorithm with node movement detection is proposed, which solves the problem of high-precision node location in anisotropic networks with sparse anchor nodes after the disaster. Consequently, according to the node location and the obstacles, the optimal guidance path is developed by using the modified minimum spanning tree algorithm. Finally, the simulations in the 3D scene are conducted to verify the performance of the proposed method on the localization accuracy, guidance path effectiveness, and scalability.

Abstract:
Field trials were conducted in 2008, 2009 and 2011 to assess fumonisin contamination in transgenic (Bt) and non- Bt maize hybrids infested with European corn borer, corn earworm, and Western bean cutworm. Comparisons were made among maize hybrids expressing two transgenic insect resistance proteins (Cry1Ab × Vip3Aa), a single resistance protein (Cry1Ab), or no insect resistance. The field design was a randomised complete block design with four replicates of each hybrid × insect combination. Kernel injury, Fusarium ear rot, and fumonisins (FB1+FB2+FB3) in maize grain were measured. These measurements differed significantly among years of the study. In all years, significant positive correlations were present between insect injury and Fusarium ear rot, insect injury and grain fumonisin levels, and Fusarium ear rot and grain fumonisin levels. Under all insect infestation treatments, Cry1Ab × Vip3Aa hybrids were the most resistant of the hybrids with regard to any of the grain quality measurements. Averaged over all insect infestations and years, insect injury, Fusarium ear rot, and grain fumonisin levels were all low in Cry1Ab × Vip3Aa (0.1% and 2.2% of total kernels, and 0.56 mg/kg, respectively). The highest average levels of insect injury, Fusarium ear rot, and grain fumonisin contamination (3.3% and 7.2% of total kernels, and 5.47 mg/kg, respectively) were found in the non-Bt hybrids. The presence of transgenic insect protection (Cry1Ab × Vip3Aa or Cry1Ab) resulted in significant reductions in all grain quality measurements as compared with the non- Bt hybrids. Only grain obtained from Cry1Ab × Vip3Aa hybrids consistently had acceptable fumonisin content according to both US guidance levels and EU regulatory limits. These results indicate that Cry1Ab × Vip3Aa maize hybrids are more likely to yield high quality, low-fumonisin grain compared to hybrids expressing only Cry1Ab or lacking insect resistance.

Abstract:
The efficiency of cacao breeding program can be increased by choosing superior crosses to be made between divergent clones. We assessed the genetic distance among five clones with RAPD data (genetic distance - GD) and with yield component data (Mahalanobis distance - MD). The clones were evaluated in a diallel, during five years, for five yield components. A total of 130 RAPD bands were scored. GD and MD were used to determine the correlation between genetic distances among clones and the performance of their hybrids. The correlation between GD and MD was 0.67 (P=0.03). Both distances were related to heterotic performance of hybrids for wet seed weight/plant and wet seed weight/fruit. The average hybrid performance for the same two yield components was correlated with only MD. Hence, genetic distances measured by RAPD and yield components can be used as a guide to the choice of the superior crosses.

Abstract:
Globally, ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) avoidance efforts rely primarily on local knowledge of the fish being consumed, its collection location, and association with illnesses. In 2016, several fish that appeared to be hybrids between a local commercially prized species, Ocyurus chrysurus, and a regionally prohibited species Lutjanus apodus (due to CFP concerns), were caught nearshore in United States Virgin Islands waters, leading to confusion regarding the safety of consuming the fish. The hybrid status of the fish was verified as O. chrysurus (male) × L. apodus (female) by comparing two sets of gene sequences (mitochondrial CO1 and nuclear S7). Using an in vitro mouse neuroblastoma (N2a) assay, one of the hybrid fish exhibited a composite cytotoxicity of 0.038 ppb Caribbean ciguatoxin-1 (C-CTX-1) equivalents (Eq.); a concentration below the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidance level for safety in fish products for CFP (0.1 ppb C-CTX-1 Eq.) but approximately 2× above the maximum described in the commercially prized parent species (0.019 ppb C-CTX-1 Eq./g). C-CTX-1 was confirmed in the hybrid sample by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The second hybrid fish tested negative for CTXs. This research confirms hybridization between two species with contrasting commercial statuses, discusses CTX accumulation implications for hybridization, and provides a methodology for future studies into novel CFP vectors, with the goal of providing critical information for fishermen and consumers regarding CFP risk management.

Deep hole drilling requires special drill bushes or a multi-stage process chain of face milling, pilot hole drilling and deep hole drilling for demanding surface geometries. With a hybrid machine concept, consisting of a laser and a conventional deep hole drilling unit, the process chain can be significantly shortened. Within the scope of this article, the laser pilot hole drilling process for AISI 316L is investigated and the process combination for several surface geometries is implemented.

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to guide about prioritisation and ranking of the solutions and overcoming barriers to facilitate the adoption of Lean Six Sigma (LSS) by using a hybrid framework. Design/methodology/approach It identifies LSS barriers and solutions to facilitate LSS adoption through literature review and by involving subject experts. The study makes use of fuzzy set theory and proposes a fuzzy analytical hierarchy process (AHP)-modified TOPSIS (technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution) framework. It uses sensitivity analysis to establish framework robustness. Findings The key findings of this techno-managerial study are identification and prioritisation of 27 LSS barriers and 22 solutions to overcome adoption challenges, proposition and usage of fuzzy AHP-modified TOPSIS framework, guidance regarding where to focus for facilitating LSS adoption and ensuring robustness using sensitivity analysis, which establishes insignificant deviation in rankings when criteria weights are altered. Research limitations/implications Some biasness and subjectivity may exist during pairwise comparisons as human judgements are involved. Practical implications Handling a hybrid solution like LSS is never easy. It is expected that the study will help industry professionals to plan their LSS adoption attempts effectively. Guidance regarding LSS barriers will assist in observing necessary precautions to avoid failures. It will open up new research fronts for researchers also. Originality/value Literature is full of studies regarding LSS barriers and its rankings. It is very rare to witness a study like ours, which discusses the barriers and links with solutions and its prioritisation. Proposed hybrid framework for a hybrid techno-managerial approach such as LSS is unique and acts as the roadmap for smooth implementation.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTThis paper has proposed a new robust hybrid nonlinear guidance law, which accounts for a missile’s terminal line-of-sight (LOS) angle constraint, in order to intercept a non-cooperative maneuvering target. The proposed hybrid nonlinear guidance strategy consists of two phases; in the first phase, a guidance law named PIGL is derived from prescribed performance control and the inertial delay control method. In PIGL, a revised prescribed performance function is put forward, and a prescribed performance controller with unknown uncertainties is then derived. The controller smoothly drives both the LOS angle and its rate to a predesigned small region under unknown uncertainties that are induced by target’s maneuvers within a fixed time. Then, a guidance law named SIGL is activated, which is derived from sliding mode control and inertial delay control. By driving the desired sliding mode variable to zero within a finite time, the SIGL guidance law is able to achieve high terminal interception accuracy. The robustness of both of the proposed sub-guidance laws has been proved explicitly in this paper. The hybrid guidance law has the advantage of a tunable convergence rate of the LOS angle and the rate of the LOS angle at the beginning period, by which an excessive large initial maneuver can be avoided. Meanwhile, the hybrid guidance law also has the advantage of lower sensitivity to errors in the estimation of the time-to-go.

Abstract:
The Epichloë species of fungi include seed-borne symbionts (endophytes) of cool-season grasses that enhance plant fitness, although some also produce alkaloids that are toxic to livestock. Selected or mutated toxin-free endophytes can be introduced into forage cultivars for improved livestock performance. Long-read genome sequencing revealed clusters of ergot alkaloid biosynthesis (EAS) genes in Epichloë coenophiala strain e19 from tall fescue (Lolium arundinaceum) and Epichloë hybrida Lp1 from perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne). The two homeologous clusters in E. coenophiala—a triploid hybrid species—were 196 kb (EAS1) and 75 kb (EAS2), and the E. hybrida EAS cluster was 83 kb. As a CRISPR-based approach to target these clusters, the fungi were transformed with ribonucleoprotein (RNP) complexes of modified Cas9 nuclease (Cas9-2NLS) and pairs of single guide RNAs (sgRNAs), plus a transiently selected plasmid. In E. coenophiala, the procedure generated deletions of EAS1 and EAS2 separately, as well as both clusters simultaneously. The technique also gave deletions of the EAS cluster in E. hybrida and of individual alkaloid biosynthesis genes (dmaW and lolC) that had previously proved difficult to delete in E. coenophiala. Thus, this facile CRISPR RNP approach readily generates non-transgenic endophytes without toxin genes for use in research and forage cultivar improvement.

Abstract Hybrid metaethical theories have significant promise; they would have important upshots if they were true. But they also face severe problems. The problems are severe enough to make many philosophers doubt that they could be true. My ambition is to show that the problems are just instances of a highly general problem: a problem about what are sometimes called ‘intensional anaphora'. I'll also show that any adequate explanation of intensional anaphora immediately solves all the problems for the hybrid theorist. We should regard hybrid tools as among the most legitimate tools in our toolkit—at least when we use them properly.

Abstract:
Abstract Purpose A robotic intraoperative laser guidance system with hybrid optic-magnetic tracking for skull base surgery is presented. It provides in situ augmented reality guidance for microscopic interventions at the lateral skull base with minimal mental and workload overhead on surgeons working without a monitor and dedicated pointing tools. Methods Three components were developed: a registration tool (Rhinospider), a hybrid magneto-optic-tracked robotic feedback control scheme and a modified robotic end-effector. Rhinospider optimizes registration of patient and preoperative CT data by excluding user errors in fiducial localization with magnetic tracking. The hybrid controller uses an integrated microscope HD camera for robotic control with a guidance beam shining on a dual plate setup avoiding magnetic field distortions. A robotic needle insertion platform (iSYS Medizintechnik GmbH, Austria) was modified to position a laser beam with high precision in a surgical scene compatible to microscopic surgery. Results System accuracy was evaluated quantitatively at various target positions on a phantom. The accuracy found is 1.2 mm ± 0.5 mm. Errors are primarily due to magnetic tracking. This application accuracy seems suitable for most surgical procedures in the lateral skull base. The system was evaluated quantitatively during a mastoidectomy of an anatomic head specimen and was judged useful by the surgeon. Conclusion A hybrid robotic laser guidance system with direct visual feedback is proposed for navigated drilling and intraoperative structure localization. The system provides visual cues directly on/in the patient anatomy, reducing the standard limitations of AR visualizations like depth perception. The custom- built end-effector for the iSYS robot is transparent to using surgical microscopes and compatible with magnetic tracking. The cadaver experiment showed that guidance was accurate and that the end-effector is unobtrusive. This laser guidance has potential to aid the surgeon in finding the optimal mastoidectomy trajectory in more difficult interventions.

Abstract:
The functional properties of organic-inorganic (O-I) hybrids can be easily tuned by combining system components and parameters, making this class of novel nanomaterials a crucial element in various application fields. Unfortunately, the manufacturing of organic-inorganic nanohybrids still suffers from mechanical instability and insufficient synthesis reproducibility. The control of the composition and structure of nanosurfaces themselves is a specific analytical challenge and plays an important role in the future reproducibility of hybrid nanomaterials surface properties and response. Therefore, appropriate and sufficient analytical methodologies and technical guidance for control of their synthesis, characterization and standardization of the final product quality at the nanoscale level should be established. In this review, we summarize and compare the analytical merit of the modern analytical methods, viz. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), RAMAN spectroscopy, surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and several mass spectrometry (MS)-based techniques, that is, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), single particle ICP-MS (sp-ICP-MS), laser ablation coupled ICP-MS (LA-ICP-MS), time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS), liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS) utilized for characterization of O-I nanohybrids. Special attention is given to laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry (LDI-MS) as a reliable nanoanalytical platform for characterization of O-I hybrid nanomaterials, their quality, design verification and validation.

Abstract:
Background and aims: Since accurate forecasts help inform decisions for preventive health-care intervention and epidemic control, this goal can only be achieved by making use of appropriate techniques and methodologies. As much as forecast precision is important, methods and model selection procedures are critical to forecast precision. This study aimed at providing an overview of the selection of the right artificial neural network (ANN) methodology for the epidemic forecasts. It is necessary for forecasters to apply the right tools for the epidemic forecasts with high precision. Methods: It involved sampling and survey of epidemic forecasts based on ANN. A comparison of performance using ANN forecast and other methods was reviewed. Hybrids of a neural network with other classical methods or meta-heuristics that improved performance of epidemic forecasts were analysed. Results: Implementing hybrid ANN using data transformation techniques based on improved algorithms, combining forecast models, and using technological platforms enhance the learning and generalization of ANN in forecasting epidemics. Conclusion: The selection of forecasting tool is critical to the precision of epidemic forecast; hence, a working guide for the choice of appropriate tools will help reduce inconsistency and imprecision in forecasting epidemic size in populations. ANN hybrids that combined other algorithms and models, data transformation and technology should be used for an epidemic forecast.

Abstract:
Silica-chitosan hybrid was synthesized from a mixture of chitosan and glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane and then coated on a microgrooved polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) mold to produce the microgrooved silica-chitosan hybrid membrane. After incubated with osteoblast-like MC3T3-E1 cells, the microgrooved hybrid membranes strongly directed the alignment and elongation of cells and exhibited a strong cell contact guidance ability, indicating a potential application as engineering bone tissue regenerative materials.

Abstract:
Modern industrial society is filled with hybrid systems. The effectiveness of a control system is now a basic requirement in any institution. In general terms, hybrid systems are reactive systems that intermix discrete and continuous control components in which the discrete part of that control system makes the decision on behaving for the whole designed system and further decides if it can allow it to switch to another set of control protocols when appropriate conditions are availed. The continuous part only functions according to a specified protocol. Hybrid systems are common models used in digital (logic) and continuous networks and devices. Digital control programs detect, control, and supervise continuous and discrete systems using differential or difference equations. This principle was utilized in our design and reported thereof. Although this work developed a different method to deal with specific problems facing students at Technical University of Mombasa. An upgrade was recommended so as to extend the control system to the eye- impaired students and visitors. Since the issue of optimal smart control systems cannot be ignored in the design of new control systems with today's requirements in our learning institutions, it was concluded that further research was necessary to bring about a fully reliable and well-developed control system able to use real-time and real routes as they exist at the university ground. This work reports a hybrid control guide system designed and implemented at the Technical University of Mombasa.

Abstract:
In this paper, an offline hybrid trajectory optimization approach is proposed for variable-sweep missiles to explore the superiority in the diving phase. Aiming at the maximal terminal velocity with the impact angle constraint, the trajectory optimization model is formulated under multiple constraints, and the aerodynamic analysis in different sweep angles is discussed. Unlike only the attack angle used for the optimization process traditionally, the two-variable optimization scheme on both the attack angle and sweep angle is investigated for variable-sweep missiles. Then, the trajectory optimization problem is transformed into the nonlinear programming problem via a hybrid optimization strategy combining the Gauss pseudospectral method and direct shooting method to obtain the high precision and fast convergence solution. Finally, to verify the feasibility of the optimal trajectory under uncertainties, the tracking guidance law is designed on basis of the gain scheduled linear quadratic regulator control. Numerical simulation results reveal not only of the proposed hybrid optimization strategy but also of the superiority of variable-sweep missiles compared with traditional missiles.

Abstract:
For years, there has been ongoing interest in experimentally and theoretically understanding inversion and racemization processes. However, to the best of our knowledge, there has been no computational study that systematically investigated how well low-level quantum-chemical methods predict inversion barriers. Herein, we provide an answer to this question and we present the INV24 benchmark set of 24 high-level, ab initio inversion barriers. INV24 covers inversion in triatomics, in pyramidal molecules, in one cyclic system, and in various helical and bowl-shaped compounds. Our results indicate that previously applied DFT approximations combined with small basis sets are not reliable enough and that at least a triple-ζ basis is needed for meaningful results. Moreover, we show that intramolecular London dispersion influences the barriers by 2 kcal/mol or more and that dispersion corrections should always be applied to DFT results. With our analysis of 34 DFT approximations, we can reproduce the well-known Jacob’s Ladder scheme with (meta-)generalized-gradient-approximation methods underestimating barriers and global-hybrid DFT functionals performing better. Range-separated hybrids or Minnesota-type hybrids are not particularly superior to more conventional methods, such as B3LYP-D3. The by far best results are achieved with dispersion-corrected double hybrids, which give results below the chemical accuracy target of 1 kcal/mol. They also outperform wave-function second-order perturbation theory approaches and we recommend using them whenever possible. Given that our systematic study of INV24 is the first of its kind, our findings have the potential to change common practice in this field and they will guide future investigations of inversion processes.

Abstract:
In this study, we investigate underlying mechanisms for the effects of management guidance forms on investors' judgments. We do so by comparing effects of point and range guidance with those associated with a hybrid management guidance form that combines the attributes of both point and range guidance. With respect to investors' earnings reestimates made after actual earnings announcements, we find that both the number and type of benchmarks associated with the guidance forms matter. High-knowledge investors use both primary (explicitly stated) and secondary (implicitly stated) benchmarks, whereas low-knowledge investors attend only to primary benchmarks. We also find that investors have greater confidence in their earnings estimates when management guidance explicitly provides best estimates.

Abstract:
This paper presents a guide to identify optimal damper location to reduce vibration on built-up structures. The guide is derived from simulation studies carried out on a set of benchmark models. Optimization is carried out using genetic algorithm. Optimal location is found using found using Generic algorithm and the hybrid method. The hybrid modelling method combines the finite element method (FEM) and Statistical energy analysis (SEA) to provide an efficient response predication for mid-high frequencies. The guide to find optimal damper location is tested on a fuselage model of Boeing 737. The fuselage model is developed using VA One software. Good agreement is seen for the optimal locations using the simple guide and result from VA One.

Full text
Abstract:
An online routing profile updating automaton (ORPUA) approach is introduced as a principal mechanism for operating an online hybrid dynamic traffic assignment (DTA) system for real-time route guidance in a traffic network. The hybrid DTA approach integrates the centralized and the decentralized DTA frameworks by partitioning the set of guided users into two classes according to an initial routing profile (IRP). One class receives the centralized DTA guidance, while the other follows the decentralized DTA routing. ORPUA takes the a priori IRP and updates the guidance supplied to vehicles in a real-time fashion according to the unfolding network conditions and relative performance of the two classes of users. It does not anticipate the future network conditions; instead, it reacts to them and optimizes the overall system performance by improving the performance of the underperforming class of vehicles. Simulation experiments illustrate ORPUA’s potential in maintaining desirable system performance and robustness in most of the demand-supply scenarios considered.

Abstract:
The article analyses and criticizes the concept of hybrid courts. The main proposition is that the concept of hybrid courts is unclear and that there are no clear criteria which would provide guidance for establishing if a judicial body is a hybrid court or not. The idea of hybrid courts is conceptually misleading because it creates the perception that hybrid courts are a separate institutional category different from international and domestic criminal courts. The author argues that the concept of hybrid courts should therefore be abandoned in favour of clearer criteria which distinguish between international and domestic courts. Analysing the Kosovo Specialist Chambers from this perspective, the author argues that the Kosovo Specialist Chambers are an international criminal court and not a domestic court which has legal implications, such as concerning immunity of heads of state.

Abstract:
In this paper, two types of stationary guides are presented to improve the web spacing characteristics; hybrid hollow porous guide for maintaining the sufficient web spacing and grooved guide for removing the entrained air. In the hybrid hollow porous guide, the pressurized air is added to the lubrication air flow between web and guide from inside the guide. Then, the web spacing characteristics are improved by the hybrid effects of hydrodynamic pressure due to web movements and hydrostatic pressure due to pressurized added air through the guide. The relations between web spacing and web velocity are measured under various supply pressures. Moreover, the relations between web spacing and web tension are examined. The contactless optical sensor, which can measure the variation of the quantities of reflected light from the back surface of web according to the variation of web spacing, is used to obtain the web spacing under various conditions. In the grooved guide, the method for the estimation of web spacing by using the concept of equivalent spacing between web and guide is presented, and the web spacing is measured by the same experimental apparatus used in the case of hollow porous guide. From the calculated and measured results obtained, the effectiveness of two types of guides on the web spacing is clarified. Finally, based on the assumptions of Gaussian distributions of asperities, the simple relations to predict the friction coefficient between web and guide surfaces are formulated, and the variation of friction coefficient with velocity is shown for various values of web tension.

Abstract:
Kyoto UniversityOver the past 20 years, computer games have become a very integral part of consumptive practices, acting as a guide to mediate multiple selves. This sets the context for this paper, a philosophical inquiry into the creation and mediation of ‘selves’ through the consumption of Japanese computer games, taking a detailed look at some of the symbolic and semiotic structures that permeate game structures. Games placed in the realm of human creativity and normative freedoms are as argued in this paper, a subtle form of the Deleuzian concept of assemblage. This paper argues that the ‘self’ as seen through computer games manifest multiple ‘selves’ that highlight the fluidity of identities which are being fabricated, disseminated and transmitted from Japan. Through an analysis of a number of Japanese games popular in Japan and actively consumed abroad, this paper examines an underlying grammar that transcribes the self and how social relations are reworked through technological enquiry. This paper further highlights how computer-dominated social practices that have heavily flowed from Japan have introduced very specific ontological ways of seeing the world to a whole generation of games players residing in other geographical spheres.
