Abstract:
This paper makes a contribution to the still relatively undeveloped literature on the sociology of counselling, using a detailed case study of one organisation. Styles of intervention are explored in the work of the National Marriage Guidance Council/Relate. The paper rejects a simple linear development model based on transitions from ‘guidance’, to ‘counselling’ to ‘therapy’ Influences deriving from Rogerian models of counselling, from psychodynamic and behavioural theory are explored and are placed in the context of wider organisational factors. Attention is given to the varying fortunes of the medical model within Marriage Guidance. The paper concludes with an examination of the contradictions thrown up by recent attempts to develop an eclectic model of marital counselling, which appear to founder on the absence of any clearly defined goals for intervention.

Abstract:
Psychological and pedagogical counselling is a multidimensional activity that is permanently inscribed in the school environment. The main goal of counselling in schools is to recognise educational, emotional and social needs of adolescents as well as to offer them support in solving problems and contribute to a perfect realisation of harmony in their development. Changes in pupils’ characteristics, emerging technologies, and paradigm shifts in the disciplines themselves predict unique opportunities and challenges for the future. In this paper I aim to present the activity of the psycho-pedagogical centres in a new perspective which is much more efficient and explicitly includes counselling actions and psychological support for pupils, their parents and teachers. The model under discussion brings many benefits in the field of counselling activity within the school at different levels. Therefore, it contributes to a higher level of effectiveness of psycho-pedagogical activities. The relations with the families and teachers are an important element of the presented counselling activity. The family’s involvement in school life is achieved through participation in parents’ meetings, lectures, main teaching classes or in any other activity from or outside the curriculum. In intervention situations a specialist’s role is to guide the parents with the aim of modelling their children’s behaviour. The groups of specialists are not only permanently attentive to pupils’ needs but their emotional, social and behavioural problems as well. The specialist has a double role in the school environment: a preventive and an intervention role in order to deal with the above mentioned situations and difficulties. The presented article also includes an example of such a model in one of the schools.

School guidance focus: a Hong Kong Study As schools worldwide pay more attention to pastoral care and pupil guidance research into guidance focus as a school factor and ways of assessing it are still undeveloped. The study reported here aimed at identifying the guidance focus (remedial, preventive or developmental) adopted in Hong Kong secondary schools. In the absence of previous studies, it was necessary to establish criteria of identification. Constructs of guidance were first identified using Kelly's Repertory Grid. This was followed by a questionnaire survey of guidance practices. The findings indicated that case work and developmental group work were useful indicators. The criteria established for assessing schools' guidance focus were the amount of time spent by the school guidance team and the priority they assigned to each indicator. The findings also revealed conceptual and methodological problems in determining school guidance focus and in categorising schools accordingly, thus opening up other areas of research. While specific to Hong Kong secondary schools, the method is reported for its relevance to other school settings.

Abstract:
The family is the smallest unit of society that affects the lives of drug users undergoing rehabilitation programs. Family can be a source of social support for substance users in solving problems through perception. The perception of family support is a source of social support to foster confidence in drug rehabilitation programs. This study aims to determine the level of family support for substance users undergoing drug rehabilitation programs and recommendations for individual, group, and family counselling services. This study used a descriptive research type with the subject N = 217. The research subjects consisted of male and female genders; the data analysis used quantitative descriptive analysis. The results showed that the category of substance users' perceptions of family support had a low level. The types of users at a deficient level were 2.30%, the low level was 57.14%, the high level was 33.18%, and the very high level was 7.37%. These findings prove that the family's influence is still very minimal for users to recover during rehabilitation. The contribution of family perceptions supports beliefs about recovering from drug addiction. The addiction counsellor profession from guidance and counselling graduates needs to implement family counselling services in collaboration with families in developing perceptions of drug addicts. Recommendations from this study's results are the implementation of family counselling services and support from families in concrete, emotional, informational, and reward.

Throughout the journey from infancy to childhood & from childhood to adolescence, there is an important person who takes care of good oral hygiene, is a pediatric dentist. Pediatric dentistry includes disciplines such as behavior guidance, care of the medically and developmentally compromised and differently able patients. Proper supervision and observation of orofacial growth and development is also part of pediatric dentistry. In addition caries prevention procedures, sedation, pharmacological management and hospital dentistry, as well as other traditional procedures are also part of pediatric dentistry. Good pediatric dental practice starts with proper brushing, patient education, diet counselling, motivation and by spreading positivity. In the beginning pediatric dentistry was mainly concerned with extraction and restorations of deciduous teeth. The trend changed from extraction to preservations. Prevention and concentrating on minimal invasive procedures are the present concept of pediatric dental practice. Any curative treatment provided should be minimally invasive, preferably nonsurgical and should conserve tooth structure as much as possible. In addition, an inadequate and unsatisfactory dental treatment during childhood can permanently damage the entire masticatory apparatus of the child leaving him with many dental problems commonly encountered in today’s adult population. Long lasting beneficial effects also can result when the seeds for future dental health are planted early in life (i.e. Childhood). Oral health needs of children have to be upraised

Abstract:
AbstractCounselling is not a well-understood concept. Many people who haven't undergone counselling believe a counsellor's role is to listen to a person tell their problem and then ‘help’ them by giving advice about what they should do. Children and young people struggle with the idea that a counsellor is not a human form of Google. It is not easy for them to hear that their problem is complex and that sometimes working out an action plan themselves, with guidance from a trained counsellor, offers better value to their lives in the long run. Kids Helpline is an Australian child and youth-focused telephone and online counselling service with a long-term view of what ‘helping’ looks like. The free-call 24/7 counselling line challenges young clients to see beyond the immediate gratification of receiving instantaneous ‘answers’ to problems, and to value more highly the process of learning problem-solving and decision-making skills, transferable from issue to issue over the course of a lifetime. This article seeks to highlight the early intervention and prevention role that child helplines play in young people's lives, encouraging and strengthening children and young people's early forays into exploring consequential thinking. The article describes the processes used by Kids Helpline counsellors to encourage children and young people to become action planners, and demonstrates young people's capacity to appreciate complexity and personal development.

Abstract:
AbstractProblems in childhood and adolescence, such as pronounced externalising and internalising problems, are associated with a relatively high risk for long-lasting psychosocial difficulties. Therefore, it is essential to understand what protects youth from externalising and internalising problems. The present article has three purposes: (1) To review previous research reviews concerning which factors that have been identified as protecting youth from externalising and internalising problems, (2) to identify and suggest key areas of focus for future research, and (3) to discuss implications of this knowledge for practice. From the 29 included reviews, it can be concluded that an extensive list of factors have been identified as being potentially protective in youths. These factors exist in the individual and the family, as well as outside the family. However, from this review of reviews, it is also evident that many important questions remain unanswered. Answers to these questions would help make interventions for youths at risk more effective. How to use the existing research results concerning protective factors in guidance and counselling with youths is discussed.

Abstract:
Background: In addition to home, school is the second most important living environment in a child’s life. Injuries that most often occur in school and on the school playground are the primary cause for the death of children. In case of sudden health problems in schools, teachers are usually the first to be at a child’s side. We were interested in how well teachers in primary schools are familiar with first aid measures in selected health cases. Methods: Collecting of data in the framework of the descriptive method of research was conducted with an anonymous survey questionnaire using the online program 1ka. One hundred and ninety-two teachers filled in the survey questionnaire in its entirety. Results: Teachers have a lack of theoretical knowledge of first aid in life-threatening situations. In four of the nine questions on the selected first aid measures, the teachers who teach at the upper level of primary school showed statistically significantly poorer knowledge compared to the teachers who teach at the lower level of primary school. Conclusions: Teachers at the lower level who teach in the early stage of the education system displayed better theoretical knowledge of first aid. This may be the result of a difference in their educational role during the schooling of an individual pupil. While a lower-level teacher who is associating with the particular pupil all day long is involved in the general education of the pupil, the teacher at a higher-level teaches a specific subject and only has contact with a certain pupil a few hours a week. Theoretical knowledge is only a basic prerequisite for performing first aid, practical skills are required as well. It is essential that teachers in primary school renew and upgrade their knowledge of first aid, as doctrinal guidance changes and first aid knowledge is also forgotten. If teachers are responsible for the practical performance of first aid measures on an injured or suddenly ill child, the school principals are responsible for ensuring the conditions for the implementation of these measures, including the provision of training for their employees.

Globally, the right and appropriate selection of tertiary programmes by potential students in education corroborates every nation's development progress. In order to explore the effect of career counseling and development in high schools in Ghana with a focus on some selected senior high school (SHS) students, this paper utilized a quantitative (questionnaire) research instrument to corroborate the development a web-based expert system for tertiary programme selection. An analytical summary of questionnaire responses received from the selected SHS students showed that due to limited career assessment processes, SHS students in Accra, Ghana arbitrary select tertiary programmes without realizing how such selections can affect their future careers. In terms of user acceptance testing (UAT), 80% of the selected SHS students (100) found our proposed system to be very useful. Such a system will therefore solve and improve career guidance, counselling, and development problems of SHS students in Ghana.

Abstract:
There is widespread recognition that many who seek or are referred for help to psychiatric and social services are acutely disturbed and require only short-term help if they are to come through a period of transient disruption in their lives. The frequency with which people in crisis consult their GP or visit a local Social Service Department is uncertain but suggests that the primary carers are the first port of call for most of them. Services developed to meet the needs of these people include traditional GPs and psychiatric services directed primarily at ‘patients’ (people who meet criteria for illness), but which often offer additional help to their families; traditional social services which place no such limitation on the individuals who seek their help but are directed mainly at people with problems in living, particularly with housing, employment and money; and counselling and advisory services (such as Relate – formerly Marriage Guidance) which focus on particular problems or client groups. A few special crisis services, most of which provide a multidisciplinary team, visit clients in crisis in their homes. These are usually psychiatric services for patients with acute mental illness (Cooper, 1979).

Abstract:
The present community service activities were held to provide peer counselor training for high school Students in West Jakarta. Results from our survey showed several problems such as high achievement demand from parents, disparity between peer groups, and verbal abuse from parents. Despite these problems, students prefer to share their problems with their peers to consulting their problems with the Guidance and Counseling (GC) teacher, subject teacher, or homeroom teacher. To address this problem, the solution offered was to prepare assistance for GC teachers by giving training to selected students so that they are able to help other students, that is as peer counselors. Students who were trained must pass a selection process to meet standard qualifications as peer counselors. The peer counselor training aimed to provide competency-based knowledge and skills as a counselor. The task of these peer counselors was to act as peer assistants who can accommodate stories and complaints from peers based on basic counselling skills. Peer counselors are expected to help reduce psychological tension experienced by peers in need. The implementation stages included the following: socializing the program, implementation of training with 14 sessions, practices and supervisions, and evaluation program. Through the training, the students were successfully introduced to simple theories and counseling skills to trainees. After 6 simulated exercises, each participant experienced better counseling skills. However, to keep improving their skills, it is necessary that the trainees be given a periodic training and a strong support from the school, especially from GC teachers.

Abstract:
Background Although adolescents are highly vulnerable to mental health challenges, they receive little attention, especially in developing countries. We investigated the mental health difficulties (MHDs) faced by adolescent students in four senior high schools in Ghana, their coping strategies and support systems. Methods In this convergent mixed-methods study, quantitative data was obtained using validated strengths and difficulties questionnaire to assess the mental health of 405 adolescents. Qualitative data was collected through in-depth interview with 18 teachers and seven focused group discussions with 35 students. Adjusted odds ratios (OR) for MHDs were estimated through ordinal logistic regression in Stata 14.2. Qualitative data was analyzed inductively and deductively using ATLAS.ti 7.1. Results Over half (58.5%) experienced peer (20.5%), emotional (16.3%), conduct (13.3%) and hyperactivity (3.0%) problems, whereas 5.4% exhibited prosocial behaviours. MHDs were associated with females (OR = 2.27, 95% CI: 1.47–3.50), bullying (OR = 1.72, CI: 1.07–2.75), domestic violence (OR = 1.87, CI: 1.10–3.17), substance abuse (OR = 8.14, CI: 1.41–46.8), academic pressure (OR = 2.40, CI: 1.30–4.42) and self-perceived poor school performance (OR = 7.36 CI: 2.83–19.16). Qualitatively, we identified financial challenges, spiritual influences, intimate relationships, bullying, and domestic violence as the main themes attributed to MHDs. Coping strategies included isolation, substance use and spiritual help. The main school-based support system was the guidance and counselling unit, but there were complaints of it been ineffective due to trust and confidentially issues, and non-engagement of qualified counsellors. Conclusions As many triggers of MHDs emanate in schools, we need mental health-friendly school environments where trained psychotherapists head counselling centres. We propose incorporating mental health education into school curricula and generating surveillance data on adolescent’s mental health.

Abstract:
Background: The double burden of malnutrition in Asia and the Pacific is driving a renewed focus on maternal malnutrition. Summary: Though adverse consequences of maternal malnutrition have been long recognized, there is slow progress in addressing nutritional problems of women/adolescent girls. Coverage and quality of current maternal nutrition interventions, mostly delivered through antenatal care programmes vary across countries, and are often sub-optimum. Further, despite a marked increase in overweight and obesity in women of reproductive age, at present, most programmes are focused on under-nutrition and micronutrient deficiencies. Key Messages: The recent antenatal care recommendations released by World Health Organization provide a benchmark for countries to evaluate their programmes and identify gaps and challenges to improving maternal nutrition. Asian and Pacific countries need to address all forms of maternal malnutrition. For countries that historically focused on maternal under-nutrition, expanding their programmes to incorporate interventions to address overweight and obesity will be challenging. Innovative methods for nutrition counselling, both in terms of content and using novel channels of communication, are needed. Protocols and guidance on managing excessive weight gain as well as determining appropriate pregnancy weight gains are needed, while managing micronutrient deficiencies, particularly in settings where inherited disorders of red blood cells exist.

Mann, K. "Can alcohol-dependent patients really reduce their alcohol consumption over time?" European Psychiatry 33, S1 (March 2016): S12—S13. http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.eurpsy.2016.01.805.

Abstract:
IntroductionTreatment of alcohol dependent patients is moderately successful but it only reaches about 10% of the population in need. A new harm reduction strategy aims at abstinence in the long run but claims to benefit patients already early on by reducing their alcohol consumption.ObjectivesA brief outline of the debate on abstinence versus controlled drinking will be followed reporting several RCTs striving for reduced drinking in alcohol dependent patients.AimsThe participant will find guidance whether and how to treat patients following this new approach.ResultsStudies testing behavioural treatments and counselling (MATCH, UKATT) indicate that a reduction over time is possible. Using nalmefene (a mu and delta opioid antagonist and a partial agonist) RCTs with more than 2500 patients were performed showing a benefit over placebo. On this basis the EMA approved this drug for the reduction of alcohol consumption in alcohol dependent patients. Other compounds such as naltrexone showed similar effects in smaller trials but are not approved for reduction. More studies testing further compounds are underway.ConclusionsThis new approach has the potential to lower the barriers which to date prevent many patients from accepting treatment for their alcohol problems. Two research questions warrant further study: (1) does the reduction in alcohol consumption translate into health and other benefits, and (2) are there specific subgroups of patients who benefit more than others. Preliminary answers will be given in the lecture.Disclosure of interestThe author has not supplied his declaration of competing interest.

Abstract:
The study investigated the effect of bibliotherapy on the truant behaviour of schooling adolescents in North West Nigeria. Two research questions were posed to guide the study. The study adopted a Quasi-experimental design. The population for the study comprised of 824 identified SSII schooling adolescents with truancy behavioural problems drawn from the four selected schools in the North West Nigeria. The sample size used for the study was 296 SS II schooling adolescents with truant behaviour. The study adopted a structured questionnaire which was developed by the researchers for data collection. The instrument was validated by three experts drawn from Department of Educational Foundations (Special Education Unit), University of Nigeria, Nsukka; Department of Educational Psychology and Counselling, Aminu Kano College of Islamic and Legal Studies, Kano State and Department of Psychology, Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki, Nigeria. The reliability of the instruments was subjected to Cronbach Alpha Statistics and reliability coefficient of 0.91 was obtained. Mean score and standard deviation were used to analyze the data. The findings of the study revealed that school location is not a significant factor in the mean truancy behaviour of schooling adolescents; though urban schooling adolescents had a reduced mean truancy behaviour compared to their rural counterpart. The findings of the study with respect to the interaction effect of treatments and gender on schooling adolescents’ truancy behaviours revealed no significant interaction effect of treatments and gender. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended among others that special educators, guidance counsellors, educational psychologists, and curriculum planners should plan a programme of intervention based on the bibliotherapy techniques for schooling adolescents.
