Abstract:
This study aims to analyze the competences in marketing and its relation to performance, in enterprises from the service and industry segments in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. An exploratory study was carried out, based on the technique of interview in deep, with 6 executives with the positions of presidente or director, who influenced the decisions on marketing at the enterprises. Using the literature, a structure of analysis with 11 dimensions of competences in marketing was created, and guided the elaboration of the interviews, as well as the structure of the chapter with the results. The outcomes of this work have indicated the recognition , according to the executives, of the importance of the competences in marketing for entrepenerial performance, as well as the validation of the 11 dimensions of the competences presented to them. Nevertheless, some restrictions to their effective practice at their enterprises were identified. It was also verified the association of the competences in marketing with more impact to the performance that varied according to the segment ( service or industry). Thus , although they have recognized the relation between the competences and a superior performance, their enterprises lack better understanding of the concept of each competence and the praxis that supports them, in order to have more effectiveness towards the market, and consequently a superior performance. Finally, it was concluded from their discourses that the strategic reflections on marketing of the enterprises in this study still remain restricted to few collaborators, and in so doing, there is a gap in relation to the understanding and the dissemination of the real concepts of marketing - a limiting factor for the competences in marketing which otherwise would be able to accomplish their role in guiding to the market and consequently generate a superior performance.

Patel, Niravkumar Amrutlal. "Towards Closed-loop, Robot Assisted Percutaneous Interventions under MRI Guidance." Digital WPI, 2017. https://digitalcommons.wpi.edu/etd-dissertations/130.

Full text
Abstract:
Image guided therapy procedures under MRI guidance has been a focused research area over past decade. Also, over the last decade, various MRI guided robotic devices have been developed and used clinically for percutaneous interventions, such as prostate biopsy, brachytherapy, and tissue ablation. Though MRI provides better soft tissue contrast compared to Computed Tomography and Ultrasound, it poses various challenges like constrained space, less ergonomic patient access and limited material choices due to its high magnetic field. Even after, advancements in MRI compatible actuation methods and robotic devices using them, most MRI guided interventions are still open-loop in nature and relies on preoperative or intraoperative images. In this thesis, an intraoperative MRI guided robotic system for prostate biopsy comprising of an MRI compatible 4-DOF robotic manipulator, robot controller and control application with Clinical User Interface (CUI) and surgical planning applications (3DSlicer and RadVision) is presented. This system utilizes intraoperative images acquired after each full or partial needle insertion for needle tip localization. Presented system was approved by Institutional Review Board at Brigham and Women's Hospital(BWH) and has been used in 30 patient trials. Successful translation of such a system utilizing intraoperative MR images motivated towards the development of a system architecture for close-loop, real-time MRI guided percutaneous interventions. Robot assisted, close-loop intervention could help in accurate positioning and localization of the therapy delivery instrument, improve physician and patient comfort and allow real-time therapy monitoring. Also, utilizing real-time MR images could allow correction of surgical instrument trajectory and controlled therapy delivery. Two of the applications validating the presented architecture; closed-loop needle steering and MRI guided brain tumor ablation are demonstrated under real-time MRI guidance.

Duzant, Julia H. "Towards guidance for the design and placement of vegetated filter strips." Thesis, Cranfield University, 2008. http://dspace.lib.cranfield.ac.uk/handle/1826/4560.

Full text
Abstract:
A combined field, laboratory and modelling approach to the study of vegetated filter strips (VFSs) was carried out in order to provide guidance on optimum design and placement for trapping sediment from overland flow. Monitoring of fifteen established filter strips in the Parrett Catchment, England, informed on the complexity of intercepting flow pathways to optimise filter strip performance. Results suggest that a 6 m VFS will trap an average of 1.74 t year -1 of material from a field of 1 ha, but this is highly variable depending on design, placement and management factors. In most cases the majority of coarse sediment is trapped at the upslope edge of the VFS and is typically >85% sand. A revised Morgan-Morgan-Finney model was tested against a range of field and laboratory datasets and an efficiency coefficient of 0.7 was achieved. When testing the model against the field results from the Parrett Catchment, an active filter strip area was used. This took into account only the area of the filter strip effective in trapping sediment due to the convergence and bypassing of flow pathways. In the field, filter strip performance will be improved by reducing concentrated flow reaching the strip and ensuring that flow does not bypass the strip through burrows and gateways, using in field erosion control, maintaining level ground between the field and filter strip edge and managing the strip to maximise the density of vegetative material, particularly the number of vegetative stems. Potential applications for the research include a field based Decision Support System, design of filter strip biophysical architecture and catchment planning.

Lindh, Arvid. "Attitudes towards the Market and the Welfare State : Incorporating attitudes towards the market into welfare state research." Doctoral thesis, Umeå universitet, Sociologiska institutionen, 2014. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-88490.

Full text
Abstract:
Social policy and its associated institutions are central political arenas for societal compromise and conflict. The capacity to attract strong support from a wide constituency of citizens is, therefore, a defining feature of welfare policy legitimacy. While there is much research measuring attitudes towards state-organized welfare, the overall aim of this thesis is to incorporate attitudes towards the market into this research field. This aim is carried out through four empirical studies that add a market component to the analysis of different topics covered in current welfare state research. The articles in this thesis either compare attitudes across countries or deploy Swedish public opinion as a test case. Newly designed or previously underutilized survey measures are used that explicitly cover attitudes towards the market. Latent class analysis, structural equation modeling, and multilevel analysis are used to study how attitudes vary both within and across countries.   Citizens’ perceptions and evaluations of the market are found to be shaped by their everyday life experiences within the market structure. Moreover, citizens’ trust in the performance of market institutions is found to be important in structuring their welfare policy preferences. In addition, attitudes towards the market appear to be influenced by the institutional context: citizens living in countries with more ambitious welfare states are less inclined to support market distribution of social services, and class differences in political welfare attitudes tend to be larger in countries with more encompassing welfare states. Collected findings thus suggest that citizens living in countries with more generous welfare states are more inclined to think that the legitimate scope of the market nexus should be negotiated and calibrated via social policy.   By incorporating attitudes towards the market in relation to welfare state support, this thesis contributes to increasing our understanding of the political and moral mindset of citizens in advanced political economies. Public attitudes towards the welfare state are to a significant degree formed by perceptions and evaluations of the market and its actors. In order to further our knowledge about preferences regarding the role of the state in modern society, and to stay in tune with ongoing policy developments, future socio-political research is well advised to bring the main alternative to the state – the market and its actors – into the analytical framework.

Hutchinson, Jo. "Place matters : young people's transitions to the labour market." Thesis, University of Derby, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10545/622613.

Full text
Abstract:
Career guidance is a core element of labour market and education policy. Young people’s transitions from education to employment need support through active career guidance. This body of research examines aspects of place and partnership working as it applies to career policy and practice for young people with a particular focus on the role of schools. The engagement of diverse partners from different sectors and interests has become an essential element of public policy and its implementation. To understand partnership working it is critical to pay attention to the relationship between the selection of partners, their combined remit, the scale of their activities and the diverse places in which they emerge. Many of the issues that policy attempts to address are also shaped by, and in, the places in which they are experienced. The research informing these papers has been undertaken as either academic research projects or as funded research over more than two decades. Many have used place-based case studies. The overall finding of this is that deliberative multi-partner engagement has become essential to the provision of pathways to the labour market that would otherwise be blocked for some young people. The centre of gravity in these discussions is the school. As organisations with a geographic footprint, the active engagement of schools in partnerships builds infrastructures, pathways and new spaces of engagement that help their pupils understand the work place. Through the twin policy paths of territorial economic development policy and a progressive socio-political approach to career guidance, policy makers have endowed schools with this responsibility. Schools are spaces of engagement with a wider world and simultaneously they are places that reflect their economic, social and cultural context. Their role as partner and place-maker needs acknowledgement within any national careers strategy that hopes to connect a spatially sensitive industrial policy with a locally enacted careers and labour market policy.

Brachacki, Gregory W. Z. "Towards a multimedia computer assisted careers guidance system for adults with dyslexia." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 1999. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/14456/.

Full text
Abstract:
Dyslexic people face particular problems in employment. These problems, coupled with a lack of specialist support, create a critical need for specially tailored computer assisted careers guidance (CACG) systems. The primary objective of this thesis is to establish guidelines for the design of such a system. Section one examines the possibility of providing training or guidance for dyslexic people via computer, and focuses on the use of symbolic information. The results of Study 1, using British road traffic signs, indicate that dyslexic people are deficient in implicit learning, even for symbolic information. Consequently, despite the advantage of symbol based systems for dyslexics, explicit training in system use is likely to be essential. Section two examines the potential of such systems for delivering specially tailored CACG to dyslexic people. The literature on careers guidance for dyslexic people suggests that they particularly benefit from increased insight into the nature of their disability, and knowledge of its implications. Careers guidance for dyslexics would therefore be optimised by guidance in: the nature of their disabilities; likely effects of their disabilities; implications for careers decisions; and opportunities for overcoming dyslexia-related difficulties. It is argued that multimedia systems, encapsulating an open learning approach, are particularly appropriate for dyslexic people. Modern multimedia computer assisted careers guidance (CACG) systems have the potential to facilitate these beneficial processes, and to provide valuable information and support materials. However, presently available systems of this sort are far from suitable for dyslexics. Unfortunately, little information on multimedia or CACG relates directly to dyslexia. To counter this, three studies were conducted; an interview study of selected dyslexia professionals, a questionnaire study of a wider range of dyslexia professionals, and a questionnaire study of dyslexic adults. Each was designed to establish: how careers guidance for dyslexic people can be improved; the feasibility and desirability of multimedia CACG for dyslexic people; and the design characteristics of such a CACG system. Not only was it generally agreed that such a system is feasible, and desirable, but also strong support was voiced for the central use of video resources. However, it was stressed that the system should not be allowed to replace human guidance. The results of these studies are combined with the conclusions from the literature, to construct a detailed design and description of a multimedia CACG system for dyslexic people.

Abstract:
This article examines the relationship between spending on active labour market welfare programs (ALPMs) and attitudes towards two decomposed aspects of globalization: immigration and trade liberalization. Two empirical analyses related to this topic are carried out using cross-national survey data. The result is that ALMP spending has a positive impact on attitudes towards globalization. This finding suggests that governments can use targeted ALMP spending to counteract negative attitudes towards globalization and therefore ensure continuing economic benefits from trade liberalization and immigration.

Alvemo, Stefan, Sven Borén, and Qing Gu. "The S-E-A-T approach to Strategic Guidance for Planning towards Sustainable Transportation." Thesis, Blekinge Tekniska Högskola, Sektionen för ingenjörsvetenskap, 2010. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:bth-5350.

Full text
Abstract:
Transportation is good for people, but it needs a social system shift in combination with sustainable technologies in order to move towards a sustainability vision. To explore how that can be done, the authors first found out about both national and municipal sustainability visions and identified a range of social and technological solutions for long and short term use. The exploration of how municipal planning of transportation can be improved lead to the conclusion that planning for transportation in Swedish municipalities can be made more sustainable when conducting the ABCD-method within the framework for strategic sustainable development. To enhance that, the authors merged the five subsystems developed for sustainable traffic solutions and the PESTEL-method. That resulted in the S-E-A-T model that informed the content of a prioritisation tool and also provides structure to the brainstorming sessions within the ABCD-method. The combination of the ABCD method, the S-E-A-T model and the expanded guiding questions form a robust approach for strategic planning of sustainable transportation rooted in a bird´s eye and systems perspective and ultimately based on backcasting from the principles of sustainability. Further testing is though recommended to assess and refine its usefulness and applicability.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The Swedish integration policy has for a considerable time focused on the labour market integration in which different actors such as the Swedish Public Employment Service, Migration Agency, Municipalities, counties as well as non-governmental organisations and the churches come to play different roles in refugee integration. Refugees are introduced to the Swedish labour market and have their skills and educational qualifications validated by the Swedish Public Employment Service in preparation for the labour market. However, amidst this welcoming gesture towards refugees by the Swedish government, there is a growth in the anti-immigrant movements in Sweden posing a threat to refugee employability. The aim of this thesis, therefore, was to examine the major successes and challenges of the refugee integration policy in the Swedish labour market in relation to refugee employability. This was a qualitative study in which both primary and secondary data sources were used. A snowball strategy was used in identifying 8 respondents. The data was collected using an open ended survey and thematic analysis was eventually conducted. The study has revealed that the Swedish Integration Policy to a lesser extent helps refugees in finding employment in the Swedish labour market despite addressing language challenges and validation of skills and educational qualifications of the refugees. Based on secondary and primary data, many respondents found their employment through their social networks. It can therefore be concluded that social networks play the main role in refugee employability in the Swedish labour market which is often against policy and formal expectations. Refugees’ labour market integration opportunities are also determined by non -policy factors including stereotypes and prejudice.

Huuva, Renée, and Özge Koyuncu. "The black housing market - A survey of thegeneral public’s attitude towards the market andpossible solutions." Thesis, KTH, Fastigheter och byggande, 2014. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-146336.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this Bachelor of Science thesis is to study the black housing market, its spread and expansion within the Stockholm region. This hidden sort of crime is compromised and organized more than ever before. According to Fastighetsägarna the turnover is over a billion Swedish krona in Stockholm City, Sundbyberg and Solna. The demands of tenancies are at an all-time high and queue is all-time long. There is a housing shortage in the region and very few tenancies are built. Besides the fact that the regulated rent may be a cause, it is also the fact that Sweden today has the highest building costs in the European Union, although the country is one of the most resource-rich. The politics regarding the possibility to be able to live in the inner-city is primitive when the geographical location of the tenancies is not reflected in the rent itself. This leads to a hidden economic value of tenancies that later on are resold in the black housing market. Instead of an increase in the housing market, a creation of a black trade has been formed. Black landlords that sell these tenancies illegally reach out to their buyers through contacts and accommodation adds on forums such as Björnsbytare and Blocket. This Bachelor of Science thesis intends to analyze what this criminality looks like and what alternative ways there are to solve these problems. A questionnaire with over 200 respondents has been made and interviews with representatives from interest organizations have been performed due to the fact that literature within this field is inadequate. Radical actions are needed if the housing market is going to recover. There are various ways of doing this which will be discussed further in this thesis. Most importantly are our results that indicate how a new generation has been raised to think that the black housing market is acceptable. It has become a natural feature in their everyday lives. We need to restore the general public attitude if we ever want to receive a functioning housing market.

Abstract:
The recent slowdown in global economic activity has shown that macroeconomic models without a well-structured representation of the financial sector will fail to provide understanding of the way that disruptions in credit markets, capital markets and banking can affect the rest of the economy. An investigation of foreign exchange speculation is used to get a better knowledge of the interaction between the financial sector and the economy as a step towards improving macroeconomic models and policy. The first part of this research looks at speculation at the macroeconomic level by using a structured vector auto regression (SVAR) to assess the relationship between capital flows and the US real exchange rate. The second assesses whether speculation can be used to identify price reversals in foreign exchange markets. The final section seeks to understand more about speculative risk with a detailed analysis of uncovered interest parity and the speculative attempt to take advantage of times when it does not hold. Speculative activity is a significant contributor to changes in the real exchange rate. No informational content is found in the extremes of speculative activity but it is shown that speculators are compensated for taking crash risk and that their activity may increase the amount of crash risk in the markets where they are operating. The main contributions of this work are applying a microstructure approach at the macro level; adding speculation to a model of international capital flows; the use of a unique series of options data to identify speculative sentiment; using a carry trade model to understand more about uncovered interest parity and the returns to speculation; using the event study method to investigate speculative extremes; and using all this to suggest ways to improve macroeconomic models and policy.

Gelepithis, Margarita. "Explaining trends towards universal coverage in market-heavy pension systems." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2014. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/944/.

Full text
Abstract:
Market-heavy pension systems, in which low or moderate state benefits are topped up by private welfare arrangements, have long been expected not only to create dualisms, but also to fuel patterns of politics that perpetuate and even increase such dualisms over time. The starting point of this research is the observation that while some market-heavy pension systems indeed remain dualised in the post-industrial context, others have become more universal, either through changes to the structure of the state pension or through regulation to extend the coverage of private pensions. My research objective is to explain the universalising changes that have occurred. I show that the very institutional features that are usually expected to lead to further dualisation, namely a reliance on market-based arrangements, the prevalence of targeting and limited earnings replacement, contribute to bringing about universalising reforms. In particular, I show how under certain conditions these institutional features help structure the policy preferences of key political actors such that those actors usually associated with the extension of state provision embrace market means, while those associated with private provision push for the expansion of the state pension. I use fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) of nine market-heavy pension systems over the three decades since 1980 to map the combinations of causal conditions under which universalising reforms have occurred. In addition, I present case outlines linking the institutional conditions to the reform outcomes via the policy preferences of key political actors. In doing so I provide a causal logic that reinforces the results of the fsQCA and offers a substantial explanation for the introduction of universalising reform in some market-heavy systems, as well as for the absence of such reform in others.

Anakok, Zeynep. "Towards An International Or Supranational Electricity Market? British And Turkish Cases." Master's thesis, METU, 2004. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12605644/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis tries to answer the question of whether there is a single electricity market in the European Union. Although some further steps were taken in terms of market integration, this study shows that it is still not possible to talk about a single electricity market. The attempts to create a single electricity market demonstrate the tensions between supranational and national decision making in a vital issue area of energy. States have been reluctant to transfer their sovereignty in energy policy making as they deemed this area vital to their economic and security interests. This study argues that intergovernmental premises, still explain the reluctance of the member states in this context better. The thesis incorporates two case studies
United Kingdom and Turkey. The first case illustrates that though UK is at the forefront of the other member states in adopting the EU electricity directives, it has still resisted transferring its right of control over its sector to the supranational authorities. Also, the British Case shows that the liberalisation process has some negative consequences. Turkish case will be an evidence for that the model of UK is not appropriate for Turkey in the restructuring process due to the differences between the two states in terms of laws and regulations, institutional capabilities and domestic market conditions. This thesis proposes that Turkey shouldn&rsquo
t disregard its conditions for the sake of EU membership while developing policies in a strategically important area where member states abstain from devolving their rights to the supranational authorities.

Abstract:

This research paper discusses the software engineering field. In which many problems exist because the software engineering field consists of different nodes and each node in turn contains a unique field. The paper also explores problems within the software engineering field as well as the market situation and the reasons behind the software engineering field in Academia are lagging behind. Here some guidelines are presented for Academia as well as industry for the improvement/help of the software engineers. The implication of an increasingly geographically mobile workforce mean that students educated in Asian regions, in particular, are facing problems due to differences in their education and culture from those in the West. In addition we present several issues concerning online studies vs. traditional studies and analyze the findings

Abstract:
Disintermediation presents an enormous opportunity for suppliers looking to increase profit margins and reduce their reliance on third parties. Situated in the context of the luxury hospitality industry of South Africa, this study aimed to determine if the psychological constructs of information risk, loss aversion, destination naivet? and transaction cost influence consumer choice of purchase channel. A quantitative methodology was applied to the study allowing for correlation analysis to assess the strength of the relationships between the psychological constructs and purchase channels. The findings suggest that the psychological constructs of loss aversion and to a lesser extent destination naivet? have an influence on purchase channel choice whilst contrary to current literature the construct of transaction cost has no influence on high-involvement non-frequently purchased experiential products such as luxury travel. Consumer's age was also shown to influence information sources utilised in the purchase process. The study contributes to both literature and practice in terms of the new context of South Africa, the potential marketing strategies to increase direct bookings and improved organisational understanding of the scale of disintermediation amongst the affluent consumer segment.

Interviews with three career teachers and five students were done. The results show that all of the students had experiences from CO in different forms. However, mostof the experiences that the students had from CO were connected to lectures about work possibilitiesand preparations rather than one-on-one career guiding sessions with a career teacher. Furthermore, the experiences also showed that the work that was done by the career teachers was much focused tothe end of the student’s education and the transmission from education to labor market.

Goerne, Rudolf Alexander. "Towards greater personalisation of active labour market policy? : Britain and Germany compared." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/6395.

Full text
Abstract:
This PhD study centres on analysing the changing employment service portfolios available to disadvantaged people out of work in Britain and Germany. Looking at the recent wave of comparative studies on ‘activation’ reforms, it springs to mind that the question of the changing portfolio of ‘active’ labour market policy (ALMP) measures has received only little attention in the sense of a rigorous comparative analysis. In order to address that gap, this study develops a novel normative and analytical perspective for the study of ALMP, which then is applied to the empirical cases Britain and Germany. I first develop the concept of personalisation as the normative and analytical framework for the analysis of ALMP. I show that the diversity of ALMP portfolios, which is a precondition for a personalised service provision, can serve as a proxy for measuring personalisation. Equipped with this analytical tool, the analysis subsequently focuses on the changes to ALMP portfolios over the past 15 years in terms of diversity. It is shown that during this period both Britain and Germany reformed working-age benefits in a way that led to a closer integration of the benefit system at an institutional level. Taking the policy rhetoric that closer integration will lead to more ‘personalised’ (UK) or more ‘tailor-made’ (Germany) services as a starting point, I analyse whether these developments at an institutional level have indeed led to a more personalised, or more diverse, provision of employment services. This study looks in particular at the situation of those groups in the two countries who have been most affected by recent integration reforms. These have primarily been claimants of second-tier working-age benefits, namely incapacity related benefits in the UK, and ‘Sozialhilfe’ (SH, social assistance) and ‘Arbeitslosengeld II’ (ALGII, Unemployment Benefit II) in Germany. I find that in both countries, employment services for claimants of these second-tier benefits have become more diverse in the wake of the integration reforms of the past 10 to 15 years, thereby increasing their personalisation potential. However, the two countries have each followed very specific reform trajectories. While the volume and coverage of ALMP have increased in both countries, the portfolio of services for second-tier claimants today is much more diverse in Germany than in Britain. This is primarily due to the existence of a large volume of services directed at claimants more distant from the labour market that follow a social integration & employability approach. These services are more marginal in Britain, where measures that follow a work-first approach are dominant. This divergent development is indicative of major and persistent differences in terms of ideational context as well as institutional (operational) factors. New Public Management reforms have influenced operational policy to different degrees in the two countries, effectively limiting the diversity of employment services in Britain more than in Germany.

Akesbi, Izeddine. "Vocational training and labour market recruitment in Morocco : towards a segmented approach." Thesis, Institute of Education (University of London), 1991. http://eprints.ioe.ac.uk/18500/.

Full text
Abstract:
In the 1980's a dramatic increase in graduate and school leaver unemployment in Morocco, raised the question of the relevance of education. Education was often blamed by policy-makers and employers for graduate unemployment and for the mismatch between supply and demand observed in the labour market. In this context, the state launched a reform of vocational training aimed at developing the vocational and practical training supposedly needed by the private sector and the economy. But the reform has failed to meet its objectives. Why ? This general problem is explored through three broad research questions: 1. To what extent does vocational training policy address 1-ne problem of youth unemployment in Morocco? 2. What are the socio-economic factors which affect and determine employment/unemployment of vocationally trained graduates in Morocco? 3. To what extent does evidence from the Moroccan labour market confirm or modify a segmented approach to vocational training and labour market recruitment? The field work for this research consisted mainly of an extensive documentary search on the educational and vocational training systems and the Moroccan labour market, and two case studies using primary data on training systems and recruitment in two contrasting segments of the labour market. These were agricultural schools and employment in large-scale private sector farming and a training centre for educational planners and school advisors and civil service employment. Chapter 1 presents the problem and a literature review of the relationship between education and work. Chapter 2 proposes a segmented framework to the Moroccan Labour market. At this stage of building knowledge on the Moroccan labour market, the segmented framework suggested in this thesis appeared relevant to the employment of vocationally trained graduates. Chapter 2 also presents the rationale and working propositions for the research. Chapters 3 and 4 describe the educational and vocational training systems, and the labour market and employment in Morocco respectively. Chapter 5 presents the method and techniques used in the field work. Chapters 6 and 7 present case studies of graduates from agricultural schools and the agricultural segment of employment: and educational planners and school advisors and their related employment. Chapter 8 supplements the two case studies with a survey of recruitment agencies and newspaper announcements. Chapter 9 synthesises the findings of the research, and draws some theoretical implications. Overall the thesis suggests that job prospects are limited and that an adequate understanding of relations between education, training and the labour market requires an appreciation of the context within which those relations occur. Three aspects of that context are highlighted: (i) general economic trends affecting job creation; (ii) attitude of employers; (iii) variations between segments of employment in (i) and (ii).

For firms entering new markets there are numerous variables impacting the focus and the scope of the new venture. For foreign companies entering the US biotech space this is even more so. Getting early relevant data is critical towards mission critical decisions and tactics. The firm in focus, Axis Shield, is launching a new point of care device to attract practitioners all over the US. They have been meticulous in getting secondhand data from various surveys and research reports. The focus of this thesis is to assist them in their primary data gathering testing assumptions and dimensions carved out to be instrumental for commercial success. Thus, the main thesis focus is concerned with the identification, structuring, collecting and analysis of these primary data. The company will eventually use both the second hand and the primary data to complete their overall market analysis. Hence, the market survey will give the firm valuable data on which to base their US launch in 2004. Finally, the thesis will give personal insights regarding the complexity of planning and carrying out a marketing study for novel products in an inaccessible market.

Abstract:
Crop yield insurance comes with loss correlation, impeding the classical insurance risk pooling. Insurers alone cannot face the high exposure entailed by weather risks, which can even fall beyond the reinsurers’ financial capacity. Financial markets appear as a logical risk-transfer solution, investors being potentially interested by the diversifying effect of weather-linked risks. A systemic risk management strategy consisting for the insurer to isolate the correlated component of the crop yield risk and to transfer it to the financial markets through catastrophe bonds is investigated in three points. First, insurance pricing models separating the risk into a systemic and a non-systemic component are presented. Second, the interest for investors to take part in a cat bond based on agricultural risks is analyzed. The low correlation to financial markets of such bonds and their potentially high returns confirm the attractiveness of this new asset class for investors. Finally, the evolution of the market value of cat bonds issuers is studied. No general evolution is identified, but firms used to issue cat bonds may expect their market value to increase, while the firms issuing the largest bonds may expect their market value to decrease. The study is applied to the case of index insurance, based on yield proxys rather than real yields, which provides detailed data for accurate risk quantification. This work contributes to the still limited literature regarding agricultural risks and insurance by describing an integrated systemic risk management strategy providing insurers with alternative risk-sharing solutions and investors with innovative asset allocation opportunities

Abstract:
The decarbonation of electricity production on a global scale is a key element in responding to the pressures of different environmental issues. In addition, the decrease in the costs of the photovoltaic (PV) sector is paving the way for a significant increase in PV production worldwide. The main objective of this thesis is then to maximize the income of a PV energy producer under uncertainty of market prices and production. For this purpose, a probabilistic forecast model of short (5 minutes) and medium (24 hours) term PV production is proposed. This model is coupled with a market participation method that maximizes income expectation. In a second step, the coupling between a PV plant and a battery is studied, and a sensitivity analysis of the results is carried out to study the profitability and sizing of such systems. An alternative participation method is proposed, for which an artificial neural network learns to participate with or without batteries in the electricity market, thus simplifying the process of PV energy valuation by reducing the number of models required

Abstract:
Over the period from January 1997 to December 2007 the South African equity market has been the target of a number of reforms initiated by both the Johannesburg Securities Exchange (JSE) and the South African government. From a review of current emerging markets and financial liberalisation literature, we identify the market attributes that differ between emerging and developed equity markets or that are changed significantly by the financial liberalisation process. The attributes are: · Correlation with major world equity markets · Distribution of returns · Market efficiency · Share price volatility · Stock price synchronicity · Implicit transaction costs Using the FTSE/JSE Top 40 Index as the basis, we conducted a longitudinal study contrasting the values of these attributes for the period 1997 to 1998 with those for the period 2006 to 2007. We then used these results to assess whether the South African equity market has become more like a developed equity market in its behaviour. We find that the South African equity market has made statistically significant progress towards developed market behaviour for all attributes apart from stock price synchronicity. We ascribe the higher level of stock price synchronicity to an increase in the number of resource and industrial shares included in the FTSE/JSE Top 40 Index. Overall we conclude that the South African equity market has become significantly more like a developed market in its behaviour. Copyright

Lee, Melanie Wai Yi. "Towards a richer understanding of NGOs in Hong Kong : a market orientation perspective." HKBU Institutional Repository, 2013. https://repository.hkbu.edu.hk/etd_oa/582.

Full text
Abstract:
This qualitative study was designed to develop a deeper understanding of market orientation among NGOs in Hong Kong. Although there have been many academic studies of market orientation, its theory and practice as well as its relationship with performance, there has never previously been a systematic analysis of that theme in the context of NGOs, and in particular in the unique context of Hong Kong. Previous research has established that systematic maintenance of a market orientation correlates with better performance among business organizations. There have also been studies addressing how organizations can become more market oriented, its antecedents and consequences, as well as its relationship with leadership, entrepreneurship and innovation. But little scholarly work has considered market orientation in NGOs, a category of organizations that is growing in numbers and social significance. The managers of 5 quite different Hong Kong NGOs were interviewed, and the interview transcripts were analyzed to identify themes related to market orientation and its application in their organizations. Ten important antecedents to a market orientation were identified from the transcripts. These were distilled into 3 factors which together largely explained the varying degrees of market orientation in the organizations studied. Senior management factors, organizational and institutional factors, as well as structural and system factors were all found to predict an NGO's market orientation. One important finding is that an NGO's fund-raising model moderates in the relationship between the organization's market orientation and its antecedents. A model is proposed that explains what antecedents are important, how they relate to market orientation and why fund raising affects the relationship. For NGOs, market orientation is understood less as a rational-actor model aimed at achieving organizational efficiency and performance, but rather as an explanation of how to appear legitimate in the eyes of donors. There appears to be a big impact of resource dependency on how the NGOs pursue market orientation. While all of the NGOs studied considered themselves market-oriented, they in fact had varied interpretations of market orientation depending on their fund-raising models. The more centralized an NGO' s source of funds, the greater the likelihood that its interpretation of market orientation is adjusted for legitimization in the eyes of its donors.

Abstract:
Abstract The purpose of this report was to study if market segmentation could influence the corporate identity and indirectly the image of a company. The relevance of this purpose was due to a lack of development of the market segmentation theory in a long period of time. There are many authors in this area of research, but not much of a consensus between them. This report therefore delves deeper into one of these market segmentation theories in order to verify the multi-segmentation theory.   During the process of investigation the management of four music festivals were interviewed to see how they use their market segmentation. Several interviews were done with one or more individuals of the organizations. The findings are two-folded. The use of multi-segmentation was proven through the interviews with the festivals. All four festivals used several different market segmentation variables, all focusing greater understanding of the values and personalities of their target group.   The most interesting finding is that from the greater understanding of their customers, the festivals have been able to identify an identity with their target group. Their respective corporate identities have then been build around their target group identities in order to reflect the customers values and believes. This concept of a target group identity may have great impacts on the customers’ perception of the corporate identity and image.

Abstract:
The cost effectiveness of using novel HCV treatment option, telaprevir and boceprevir, should depend on patients’ respond to conventional PEG-INFα and ribavirin therapy. The study of pharmacogenomics, interleukin-28B (IL-28B) polymorphisms, accompanied with the information of HCV genotypes are suggested to have the strongest predictive value of treatment outcomes and prognosis of disease in individuals infected with HCV who are undergoing conventional PEG-INFα and ribavirin therapy. It is extremely valuable in HCV/HIV co-infected patients as these groups of patients require a complex treatment regimen and demonstrate poor sustained viral response (SVR) rate. The development of a fast and promising IL-28B genotyping assay is urgently needed. A total of 47 blood samples randomly selected from HCV and HIV co-infected patients were used in this investigation. The aims of this study are to evaluate and compare the performance of newly developed IL-28B HybProbe real-time PCR assay using LightCycler® system against Sanger Sequencing method in determining IL-28B polymorphisms on rs12979860 and rs8099917 and to estimate the prevalence of IL-28B polymorphisms among HCV/HIV co-infected patients in Hong Kong. In addition, the genotypic distribution of HCV among the same patient group is identified by using in-house Sanger Sequencing method. It was found that the newly developed IL-28B real-time HybProbe assay resulted in 100% concordance with the traditionally used Sanger Sequencing method. The allele frequencies of C and T were 96% and 4% in rs12979860 and T and G were 97% and 3% in rs8099917 respectively. The CC and TT wild type are predominating in rs12979860 and rs8099917 with frequencies of 93.62% and 95.74% respectively. The most favorable compound genotype CC/TT with both homozygous wild types on both SNPs was the most predominant type with a high prevalence of 93.61%. Among all the samples, 50% samples were found to be HCV genotype 1, 41.18% were genotype 6 and 8.82% were genotype 3. A simple and efficient IL-28B real-time HybProbe assay was developed in this study and proved to show excellent performance on IL-28B genotyping although further optimization is suggested before it can be applied in the clinical setting. The favourable wild type genotypes of rs12979860 and rs8099917 accounted for the most predominant genotypes which is similar to other findings obtained from an Asian population. A comparatively high prevalence of HCV genotype 6 was found in the HCV/HIV co-infected group. Future study with the information of treatment outcomes (HCV viral load) can further evaluate the predictive value of IL-28B polymorphisms on SVR in different HCV genotypes.

Torre, Fernández Margarita. "Towards less segregation? : a study of women’s occupational mobility in the U.S. labor market." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/32040.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation seeks to expand and refine our understanding of sex-segregation in the labor market. The rapid changes in women’s roles that have taken place in recent decades have made traditional explanations incapable of accounting for current patterns of mobility in the labor market, and the persistence of sex-segregation in modern times. Throughout this dissertation I draw on a wide variety of sources and research methods to examine the striking movement of women out of male-dominated occupations in the U.S. There is an important conundrum to unravel, as less attrition of women from male-dominated occupations would mean more progress was being made toward the integration of men and women in the workplace. Results indicate the emergence of new line of demarcation between women; whereas a minority of women tend to plan their job careers more efficiently in a similar way to men, low-status women continue to have unstructured career patterns.

Abstract:
Political structures and the evolution of late capitalism in liberal Western democracies lend a common frame to the development of national media systems. However, whereas media policy from the post-war period to the mid-1980s was largely driven by socio-political concerns and coextensive with policy for public service television, this model has been vehemently challenged. Key factors were the convergence of erstwhile-separated industries and infrastructures, as well as the ambitions of the corporate sector and governments alike, to benefit from the economic opportunities offered by the communications revolution. By assessing the changing relationship between the role of the state, economic structures and technological innovation, this research investigates these processes in the UK and Germany. Both countries have the two key public service systems but also feature striking differences such as the antithetic political systems and democratic processes (majoritarian vs. consensus democracy). The basic assumption suggests that a genuine understanding of contemporary developments is only possible if political/economic as well as historic/sociological perspectives are incorporated into the holistic approach applied. Thereby this study gives consideration to key processes and events which have determined transitions between communications policy paradigms and regulatory regimes. Given the Anglo-Saxon tradition of regulating, key processes and events in the UK are often indicated by the appointment and report of a committee of enquiry. For the purpose of this study the most crucial of these is the Committee on Financing the BBC (1986), which first applied market-driven politics onto British broadcasting, and whose recommendations still serve as a blueprint for current communications policy-making. In Germany the KtK Report (1974) formed the basis for decisive reforms in broadcasting and communications. Apart from that, however, Germany features the characteristic of administering state interventions in as detailed a manner as possible through legislation. Of central importance are, therefore, the rulings of the Federal Constitutional Court, which continuously set decisive parameters for the development of the broadcasting system. The thesis follows two driving themes which have been identified as crucial in terms of the comparative dimension and are elaborated continuously in more detail. First, the focus is on the interdependencies between public and private sector. Second, implications and responses of the central vis-à-vis federal characteristic of state formation are investigated. In doing so, the thesis draws on vast sources of archival documents as well as exclusive material from a series of elite interviews with a purposively-selected sample of very high-level sources, including Chairmen, Director-Generals, ministers, very senior civil servants and so on. The thesis demonstrates how communications policy-making is carried out in both countries and how these processes are determined by national regulatory frameworks which are rooted within the borders of the nation state. As such the research findings have broader implications for commercial and public sector regulation.

Abstract:
The most urgent imperative of our current century is the concern about the Environment. Sustainability may be considered as the key solution to this universal problem. Living in a consumer society means that humans’ actions always have a sort of impact on what will be our common future. This, together with the fast growing population rates, implies that something have to change in the pattern of consumption worldwide. In general, emerging economies are those that from this point of view scare the most, due to their increasingly augmenting urbanization, together with their enormous size and their retrograde industrial development and regulations. Specifically Brazil, with its exponential growth and its continental dimensions represents one of the biggest consumption forces of the planet. Since behavioral studies among ecological consumption in this country are mainly concentrated on organic food, this present work aims to analyze the market toward sustainable products in the cluster of Porto Alegre. Precisely, the pattern of consumption toward laundry detergents are inferred, in order to (a) identify the offer of laundry detergents in the market; (b) understand how does the purchasing process of laundry detergents occurs; and (c) define values and attitudes that drives green consumers’ behavior, investigating the chances of penetration of an Italian green product. This work is disclosed through a triangulation of three different phases. Starting from the delimitation of the theoretical background both of consumer behavior and green consumption, it was then followed a qualitative research, either secondary and primary – via semi-structured interviews – supported by a quantitative Schwartz survey with the aim of inferring values and attitudes of the segments of interest.

Abstract:
Rural areas in much of sub-Saharan Africa access needed health care from untrained and often poorly regulated drug vendor shops with concerns over the quality of products and services provided and their public health implications. The thesis undertook to understand market relationships in a rural retail drug market in the light of the structure-conduct-performance paradigm and isolate opportunities for potential policy interventions for improved access to quality and safer medicines. Data was collected from a sample of patent medicine vendors and drug purchasers in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State, north central Nigeria, over 9 months in 2012. Information from drug vendors and drug consumers was generated through semi-structured questionnaires, in-depth interviews and systematic business transaction observations. Key state and national drug regulatory officials were also interviewed in-depth and related documentary data collected and evaluated. Data analysis focussed mainly on the relationships between market structure, provider conduct, consumer behaviour and the nature of regulation, with the aim of understanding market performance in relation to access to medicines and their rational use. The study established that patent medicine vendors were an important source of medicines for inhabitants of the local government for ambulatory primary health care. Drug retailers were said to be a reliable source of a wide range of drugs provided at relatively more affordable prices and in a convenient way that satisfied consumer expectations. However, a number of market failures existed: low quality of treatment due to poor provider knowledge of diseases and drugs and therefore inappropriate prescription and dispensing practices. Ineffective regulation was also demonstrated by way of inappropriate and inadequate regulatory regime, occasioned by wide spread regulatory infractions. To attain the desirable public health objective of sustained improvement in the quality of products and services obtainable at patent medicine vendor outlets, regulatory strategies must be contextually relevant, providers must be trained and offered financial and business incentives and consumers must be empowered by accessible and timely health information for informed choices against the backdrop of strengthened and better incentivized inspectorate unit in a systematically intertwined approach.

Abstract:
International migration has had a steady growth over the last decades and the integration of immigrants into the labour market is a challenge for many countries. Previous literature has found that immigrants, especially non-European immigrants, are disadvantaged in the labour market, and that the size of this disadvantage differs between male and female immigrants. One potential explanation for non-European immigrants’ labour market disadvantage is discrimination, which can be expressed through negative attitudes towards immigrants. Using individual data from the European Social Survey, this paper investigates whether there is a relation between negative attitudes towards immigrants and the employment gap between non-European immigrants and natives in Sweden, and whether this relation differs by gender. The results, however not statistically significant, indicate that there is a negative relation between negative attitudes towards immigrants and the immigrant-native employment gap. Moreover, the female immigrant-native employment gap is found to be more negatively affected by negative attitudes towards immigrants.

Syverson, Peter D. "Engineering undergraduate enrollment and the engineering labor market: a lagged-supply analysis." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/44088.

Abstract:
The relationship between economic and demographic factors and the flow of new students into undergraduate engineering programs was investigated. An empirical analysis was undertaken based on a lagged-supply model developed earlier by Richard Freeman. The analysis involved the replication of the Freeman model over the 1948-1972 period, the extension of the model through 1986, and the forecasting of first-year engineering enrollments up to the year 2000. The model developed in this thesis was able to a accurately mirror the engineering enrollment trends from 1948 to 1986. The economic variables--especially R&D expenditures and starting engineering salaries relative to median income of college graduates--were found to be important factors in the flow of freshmen into engineering. None of the variables relating to demographic trends were found to significantly related to first-year engineering enrollment. The importance of the federal government's role in the engineering labor market through research and development funding is discussed, along with forecasts of possible trends in first-year engineering enrollment.
