Abstract:
Providing Reference Services is number 32 in the Practical Guides for Libraries series. Beginning with a brief history of library reference service and a discussion of library stereotypes, the authors quickly move on to identifying criteria for building and maintaining a reference collection, as well as key points to consider when providing reference service, with particular emphasis on the reference interview. The authors note the need to incorporate emotional intelligence into reference work. Emotional intelligence is a topic that has recently garnered increasing interest in the business world, and it is good to see it addressed here in the context of libraries and reference services. This guide does not give detailed plans for implementing reference services but instead highlights key points and concerns to consider when developing reference services. The authors’ approach is broadly based, and the key points can be adapted by small public libraries as well large academic institutions. Each chapter ends with a helpful bibliography of sources and additional reading, and the authors also refer to another guide in the series for readers seeking more detailed help; this kind of continuity within the Practical Guides for Libraries series is useful and appreciated.

In laying out this roadmap, the authors cover everything from ADA legislation updates to universal design for both the library building and its online presence. The book focuses not merely on accessibility, but also on building relationships by interacting in a positive manner with people with disabilities. An important part of this is the emphasis on including people with disabilities in accessibility planning. The authors also incorporate examples for disability awareness programming in academic, public, school, and special libraries.

In an area where only a handful of books exist, Design Criteria for Mosquesis a welcome addition. A follow up of sorts to Kahera’s Deconstructing theAmerican Mosque (2002), it was hoped that this text would present new material and a fresh analysis in addition to serving as a guide for design. Thefive-chapter book covers mosques built in North America and Europe fromthe early 1920s onwards and incorporates many images and architecturaldrawings, including many from the author’s design office. Several overallissues related to inconsistency, however, undermine its potential. The greatestone is that of voice, a common enough problem when a book is writtenby multiple authors – the text fluctuates between didactic and spare guide listsfor planning and building a mosque to a philosophical discourse on the meaningof each issue related to designing contemporary mosques. The imagesand drawings could have mediated between the two polarized voices. The useof images, if explained in the text or even in subtitles, could have faciliatedthe discourse and related the ideas to the guideline lists.Yet this is not the case, for the images and drawings (of inconsistentquality and often with illegible dimensions) are included in the text’s bodybut seldom referenced in the text. The captions are also non-explanatory,thereby leaving the reader to guess at their relevance to the discourse andthe lists ...

Abstract:
This is an essay that began as a book review. The book reviewed is: ‘The Australian Bird Guide’ by Peter Menkhorst, Danny Rogers, Rohan Clarke, Jeff Davies, Peter Marsack and Kim Franklin, and published in 2017 by CSIRO Publishing, Clayton, Victoria, Australia (paperback, AU$49.95, ISBN 9780643097544). I enjoy reviewing books and particularly enjoyed reading and reviewing this one. I enjoyed it because the illustrations of birds are superb and because the decision of the authors to follow a global list of bird names provided me with an opportunity to once again raise questions about the names given to Australian birds. Thus, the review morphed into an essay: in part an account of my experiences over the past 60 years with field guides, names, and nomenclature, in part a book review, and in part a bit about the conservation of Australia’s birds.

The Social Ecology of Border Landscapes, edited by Grichting and Zebich-Kros, is part of the Anthem Series on International Environmental Policy, which seeks to provide new evidence-based insights on global environmental governance. The book attempts to address this objective by inviting a wide variety of authors from various disciplines to contribute international case studies on border landscapes. All these studies are situated in the field of critical social theory and social ecology in particular – a subject that is focused on the complex interrelationships between nature and society. The wide range of scientific perspectives on social-ecological systems is categorised into four main parts: Frames, Bridges, Corridors and Portals. This structure functions as a suitable guide to distinguish major focal points within the rather complex discourse.

Abstract:
Studies of early Australian accounting texts and their authors have yet to be augmented by examinations of the subsequent specialist books which were written to guide accounting practice within specific domains, such as the pastoral and mining industries. This study examines the contents, use, and influence of an early specialist pastoral accounting text entitled Station Book-keeping, which was published in Australia in five editions over the period 1900 to 1937. The life and career of the book's author, Francis Ernest Vigars, are also outlined. Station Book-keeping described and advocated a comprehensive system of double-entry accounting for pastoral stations and is posited as a key medium by which this technology was adapted and transferred for use by these entities. In turn, it is argued that Vigars' book, by extending the use of conventional accounting technique, facilitated greater involvement by professional accountants within a major Australian industry.

Abstract:
Central government guidance seeks to ensure and enhance the quality of practice and decision-making across – and sometimes beyond – government. The Magenta Book, published by HM Treasury, is the key UK Government resource on policy evaluation, setting out central government guidance on how to evaluate policies, projects and programmes. The UK Centre for the Evaluation of Complexity Across the Nexus was invited to contribute its expertise to the UK Government’s 2020 update of the Magenta Book by developing an accompanying guide on policy evaluation and ‘complexity’. A small multidisciplinary team worked together to produce a set of guidance, going through multiple stages of work and drawing on a variety of sources including academic and practitioner literature and experts and stakeholders in the fields of evaluation, policy and complexity. It also drew on Centre for the Evaluation of Complexity Across the Nexus’ own work developing and testing evaluation methods for dealing with complexity in evaluation. The resulting Magenta Book 2020 Supplementary Guide: Handling Complexity in Policy Evaluation explores the implications of complexity for policy and evaluation and how evaluation can help to navigate complexity. This article, designed primarily for practitioners who might be interested in this guidance and how it was developed, describes the processes involved, particularly related to the interdisciplinary dialogue and consultation with other key stakeholders that this involved. It also briefly outlines the content and key messages in the guidance, with reflections on the experiences of the authors in developing the guide – including the challenges and insights that arose during the process, particularly around the challenges of communicating complexity to a broad audience of readers.

Abstract:
John Milton's 1644 declaration that ‘Books are not absolutely dead things’ makes him a rock star among undergraduate English majors who are covetous of the material, reassuringly physical book. This essay explores that metonymic dichotomy through a project that combined the ‘old’ technology of the hand-press book and the ‘new’ technology of GIS story-telling. Using a visiting special collection of rare books for students at a small college, the project approached hand-press era books in three phases: 1) a bibliographic description and transcription; 2) book forensics, and 3) a ‘deep map’ of a book. With mapping—understood as an expression of spatial thinking—as a guide, students recognized that the singular text, even the dialogic text, is far less remarkable than locating and articulating the links between history, place, literature, and culture. Students engaged with terminology (descriptive bibliography), recognized the temporal lines of the book as an object (provenance), followed the development of a book as a polyglotous intellectual entity, and reviewed the geographic/historical experiences of the author and of the book (biography, publishing). The spatial turn allowed students to construct (and in some cases, deconstruct) the cultural world in which texts, authors and printers collide.

Abstract:
This book presents an analysis of various aspects of contemporary political behavior of Russians, and a political forecast for the future policy after 2024. In other words, the leitmotif of the book is a detailed and thorough analysis of the current political preferences of Russian citizens and their transformation in the context of future political processes. The monograph explicitly presents the results of three surveys and provides in-depth analysis. A special merit of the book is the “futurology” section, which tries to determine the future character of domestic policy. The authors believe that its contours are already becoming all the more apparent in real life. Another merit of the book is its discussion, which offers different approaches and opinions in a comparative context when it comes to assessing the analyzed political processes and phenomena. Groups of evaluations which starkly contrast each other we metaphorically labeled as “white” and “red”. What also makes this book valuable is the fact that it can serve as a guide when studying political science in universities and in special training of practical political strategists, particularly in relation to the methodology for analyzing and evaluating political processes of modernity.

Relevant theories are cited in reference to their authors and the school of thought they are affiliated with. Profit is traced through its Classical and Marginalist origins into its mainstream form in the literature of the Neo-classical school. As will be seen, the book is still not closed on a concept which may still afford further theoretical refinement.</p>

Abstract:
Problems of literacy, correctness of speech, correction of errors in printed editions, which rose a hundred years ago, are relevant today. For the first time there are examined the textbooks published for students and professionals in book printing. The main substantive aspects of the article are the role and importance of these textbooks. At the turn of XIX-XX centuries in St. Petersburg there were several schools of book printing, where in the classroom the students got acquainted with the basic techniques of typesetting works. There was a need of publishing the special literature. The authors of textbooks have become school teachers. The article analyzes the following editions: R. Nippert «ABC Books of Eastern and Western Languages» (SPb., 1859), A.Serkov «Quick Start Guide for Compositors of Typographic Art» (St. Petersburg., 1861), G. Kerbach «Slavic Alphabet» (SPb., 1894), G. Schroeder «On the History of Alphabets» (SPb., 1896). Publications on the history of alphabets made an enormous contribution to the expansion of knowledge on book printing in Russia and formed the basis for the subsequently developed special educational literature on the art of typesetting, book printing and decorating books.

Abstract:
WHAT AN INTERESTING, topical and refreshing text on patient safety and quality! As the name of the book implies, this is a practical text that takes the reader systematically through the concepts, practices and pitfalls of implementing a hospitalbased patient safety and quality program. The pleasing aspect of this book is that is written from the perspective of implementing a safety and quality program in an Australian health service. The authors are hands-on clinicians who have written this book like a personal quality journey. This approach has been very effective in presenting the reader with practical applications, approaches and challenges in developing programs that enhance patient care. This offering fills an important gap in the market. There are many texts that approach quality, safety and risk management from a theoretical or quantitative perspective. This book takes the available research and theory and illustrates how a health service can harness the available literature to develop a working guide to improving patient services. The chapter that provided very straightforward explanations of a range of change, motivation and social interaction theories particularly impressed me. One of the real revelations was the chapter that covered eighteen practical steps for implementing a clinical risk management program in a health service. This chapter goes to the heart of why this text is particularly useful. I found the book extremely useful as it provides a great framework for those wanting to start or enhance their hospital-based quality improvement and safety program. The book is well set out, easy to read and provides a wealth of examples of forms, audits and other quality tools ? and at $49.95, this local text is also excellent value for money.

Abstract:
The considerations on the book “VirtuosaBenfeitoria” aim atevaluating the relevance of a social project to guide the actions of the ruler and theindividuals, with a view to practical actions that converge to the common good. The infant D. Pedro, also known as the Duke of Coimbra, wrote the work. The central focus of the book is to address the sense of improvement and how the prince should practice and bestow it and how the subjects would receive and practice it. The arguments of D. Pedro to deal with the good and the society are strongly influenced by classical authorities and authors of scholasticism, especially Thomas Aquinas. In this sense, on the one hand our study seeks to show that such knowledge was essential for him to understand the plots that build human relationships, whose premises, to him, should be the ones leading society towards the common good;on the other hand, the goal is to analyze the work we regard as essential theoretical and methodological principles of history that allow us to recover, through memory, historical events that potentially guide us through paths that show the relevance of the Master of the University, as a vector in the organization of a given society.

The following collection of Locke items, when taken together with ‘Recent Publications’ lists in previous issues, should provide fairly full coverage of work on Locke from 1981 to the present time. The Locke literature from 1900 to 1980 has been thoroughly covered in the book by Roland Hall and Roger Woolhouse, Eighty Years of Locke Scholarship: A Bibliographical Guide (Edinburgh University Press, 1983). The present list includes articles published in the previous issue of Locke Studies (Vol. 13). I am grateful to David Armitage and Roma Hutchinson for suggesting several items, and to those authors who sent offprints of their articles.

Abstract:
According to its authors, Teaching ESL Composition: Purpose, Process, and Practice is designed to help pre- and in-service teachers become experts in the field of L2 writing pedagogy. If readers take this text seriously and practice a healthy portion of the application activities, they should succeed in moving toward this ambitious goal. The book is divided into nine chapters, each addressing a different practical aspect of teaching composition. At the start of each chapter, “Questions for Reflection” builds schema; a summary and “Reflection and Review” questions check for comprehension at the end. Each chapter also has application activities referenced to the topic they address throughout the text and in the “Application Activity Thematic Reference Guide.” Most chapters provide figures and appendixes containing authentic samples and models. At the end of the book there is an extensive list of references including research, practical guides, and workbooks in ESL and L1 composition.

Abstract:
The prefaces to English school grammars of the eighteenth century may be conceptualised as a frame of reference for the authorial voice behind them. To promote and boost the sales of their works, grammarians generally wrote sound, meaningful prefaces that combined propositional content with metadiscursive comments. Therefore, this kind of prefatory material falls within the scope of what Genette (1997: 1–2) calls the “paratextual apparatus” of a work, which aims to provide the reader with essential information for the correct reception, understanding and perusal of the book. This paper focuses on grammarians’ textual and interpersonal metacomments as thoughtful strategies to guide the reader carefully through the text, as well as to shape the contents and message of the book at various levels (Hyland 2000; Lorés-Sanz 2006: 92). To this end, a study corpus of fifteen English school grammars has been retrieved from the ECEG Database (2010) by restricting two search parameters: target audience and authors’ place of birth.

Abstract:
The stated intent of this rather hefty book is to “provide a readily available handbook for neuropsychology interns, fellows, and practicing clinicians,” with a focus on the “major differential diagnoses that neuropsychologists are routinely asked to make,” particularly in a hospital-based neuropsychological practice. These are optimistic goals that are frequently, although not always, fulfilled. The editors are to be commended for their success in organizing a knowledgeable and erudite group of contributors, who generally have conformed to the recommended stylistic and content guidelines. However, as is typical of most edited works, the stated intent(s) of the book are rather unevenly addressed in both the scope of the included topics and by the various authors. The book includes 30 chapters divided into five sections: General Issues (101 pp.), Pediatric Psychology (64 pp.), Geriatric Psychology (66 pp.), Neurological Disorders (159 pp.), and Neuropsychological Syndromes (225 pp.), and an appendix of medical abbreviations. The result is a not-so-brief handbook that is useful as a desk reference guide for students, interns, fellows, and nonneuropsychological clinicians working with neurological patients. For experienced neuropsychologists, the book is likely to be of less value due to its intentionally brief reviews of most topics.

Abstract:
In this thought-provoking and insightful book, ten psychologists, coW1selors,and educators have provided a ground-breaking study on multicultural counseling,a subject still fairly new to the field. Based on the work of Division 17open meeting of the Committee of Ethnic and Cultural Diversity, 1982, theauthors present guidelines for identifying monoculturalism and multiculturalism, proposing methods for achieving change at the individual, organizational, and professional levels. The authors argue that European-American traditions and research oftenfocus on the impact of intrapsychic factors on human development, ignoringinfluences of culture. They further argue that psychologists, who are aware ofand sensitive to other worldviews, should not only emphasize the knowledgeof such worldviews but should also incorporate them into the psychotherapeuticprocess. Multicultural Counseling Competencies is a timely book that couldbe used as a guide for mental health professionals.Chapter 1 of the book presents a definition of "multiculturalism" and a workingguideline upon which mental health professionals should base their knowledge, skills, and practice. Chapter 2 deals with "ethnocentric monoculturalism,"providing historical background on the emergence and development of aEuro-American worldview and highlighting how mental health professionalssubscribe to such a worldview without questioning its validity and applicabilityin a multicultural society. The profession's response to multiculturalism is the subject of the third chapter. This chapter identifies the "Seven Deadly Resistances" that are often ...

Abstract:
This book comes at a very advantageous time, for interfaith encounters havebecome part of a larger conversation in academic and non-academic circles.Journals and conferences have added the dimension of how to understand the“other” and create dialogue in many innovative ways. Islamic and JewishLegal Reasoning: Encountering Our Legal Other is precisely the type of textand rigorous academic guide to lead us at a time when so many religious lawsare misunderstood – especially between Jews and Muslims. The authors ask some questions: “Can the traditions of Judaism and Islambe read together through a legal religious lens without always having a commonground?” and “Can dialogue precipitate a philosophical framework thatcan demonstrate self-critical thought and still be engaged with the ‘Other’?”More importantly, in each section ask the authors some core questions aboutreligion and law in order to show why the modern preoccupation with religiouslaw is so relevant. In addition, through their methodological legal analysis, they at times demonstrate why religious law is irrelevant. The scholarsfeatured this book are meticulous, thought-provoking, and timely in terms oftheir significant lines of questioning. The book is unique in its conception, for Anver M. Emon and the contributors’organic approach makes it more accessible and, at the same time, academicallyrigorous. The book emerged from workshops and was “developedfurther when Emon went to Cambridge University to join Gibbs and others inthe Scriptural Reasoning project, where scholars read the scriptural texts ofmultiple traditions with scholars from those different traditions” (p. xi). Scripturalreasoning allows one to read another’s scriptures in a way that allows forpersonal readings and reactions to one another’s sacred text, an approach thatallows for “recognizing their own otherness to their own respective traditions”(p. xxiii).Islamic and Jewish Legal Reasoning opens up deeply complex and glaringissues of interpretation, authority of interpretation, and the historical conditionsof reading sacred text, especially for religious law. In the first chapter,“Assuming Power: Judges, Imagined Authorities, and the Quotidian,” RumeeAhmed and Aryeh Cohen introduce us to this complex problem of authorityand complex phenomenon through legal schools of thought in both traditions. The question of God as authority is crucial, as the authors ask, almost in a ...

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Many teachers consider the textbook the primary guide for the curriculum materialisation. This work analyses the content of the rational numbers in a textbook used in the 7th-grade of elementary school. For this analysis, the theoretical and methodological tools of the Ontosemiotic Approach to Knowledge and Mathematical Instruction (OSA) are used. Objective: Our goal was to understand the level of didactic suitability of the instruction process in the textbook. Design and setting: Thus, we analysed a section of the textbook about rational numbers using the categories described by OSA. Concepts, procedures, problem situations, definitions and arguments used by the authors were also analysed. Results: From the results obtained, we could infer that there are examples of the concepts worked in class, but without the proper definitions and arguments, hindering generalisation. The analysis also allowed us to highlight didactic-mathematical knowledge that can guide the teacher concerning the textbooks' possibilities and limitations, to achieve more didactic suitability in the process of teaching and learning rational numbers. Conclusions: the book under study should not be considered as planning for an instructional process to meet the current curriculum guidelines.

Abstract:
INFORMATION RESOURCES OF THE NATIONAL LIBRARY AS A SOURCE FOR THE STUDY OF THE ELECTRONIC BOOK MARKET IN POLANDThe aim of the article is to present publications and databases based on legal deposit copies sent to the National Library as potential sources for the study of books on electronic media. The authors carry out a critical analysis of, above all, the statistics provided by Ruch Wydawniczy w Liczbach [Polish Publishing in Figures] 2001–2014 as well as inventories making up the national bibliography system, Bibliografia Dokumentów Elektronicznych [Bibliography of Electronic Documents] 2001–2015 and Bibliografia Dokumentów Dźwiękowych [Bibliography of Sound Documents] 2009–2011. The data obtained as a result of the analysis have been confronted with information contained in the basic component of the national bibliography system — Przewodnik Bibliograficzny [Bibliographic Guide]. The analysis has demonstrated that the statistics provided by the National Library’s publications are not useful to the study of the electronic book market owing to the fact that the data overlook the aspect of the medium. The analysis has also shown that the bibliographic information about the current production of e-books and audiobooks is incomplete. Drawing on the results of the analysis, the authors have concluded that the incompleteness of the National Library’s sources stems partly from the methodology used in their compilation and partly from problems with obtaining legal deposit copies from publishers. In addition, other National Library resources — the main catalogue, digital repository or e-ISBN service — do not, in their present form, constitute alternative sources of information about electronic books published in Poland.

Abstract:
X-ray fluorescence analysis finds wide application in various fields of knowledge and industries. One of the features of the development of the method at the present stage is a significant excess of the production of X-ray spectrometers in comparison with the training of specialists who have the knowledge for the competent use of equipment. As a result, manuals and reference books are of great importance, which help to correctly choose the optimal conditions for measuring the intensities of the analytical lines of the elements to be determined and methods of converting the experimental intensities into concentrations. The paper provides information about the book by M.J. Willis, C. Feather and K. Turner “Guidelines for XRF Analysis. Setting up programs for WDXRF and EDXRF”. The material is presented on 518 pages, illustrated with 250 figures and contains 131 tables. The review discusses the material presented in chapters. The first 7 chapters of the book provide information on the theoretical and technical foundations of XRF. In the most voluminous sixth chapter “Setting up an Analytical Programme”, information on the aspects of the choice of instrumental parameters, analytical lines, angular positions for evaluating the background intensity and the contribution of spectral overlaps is consistently presented. The second section discusses recommendations for the selection of analytical parameters for investigating the concentrations of individual elements from F to U, usually determined using XRF at the trace level (Chapters 8-15). In the third section, the authors similarly considered recommendations for the selection of analytical parameters for investigating the concentrations of individual elements for specific typical materials (chapters 17-31). The authors have prepared a good quality reference guide useful for both beginners and skilled professionals.

Abstract:
The mediumistic relationship between W. B. Yeats and his wife George (née Hyde Lees) is an important guide to the creative work produced by the Irish poet after their marriage in 1917. Their unusual collaboration illuminates the esoteric philosophy expounded in the two very different versions of Yeats’s book A Vision (1925 and 1937). It is also theoretically interesting in itself, not only in the early period when the automatic experiments produced the ‘system’ expounded in A Vision, but also in the 1920s and 1930s, when the Yeatses' relationship had matured into an astonishingly productive mature partnership. By analysing symbols the Yeatses themselves used to conceive of their joint work, particularly the symbolic structures and constructed selves of the collaborators, and particularly in the later period, this essay attempts to engage with the authors’ own terminology and understanding as a method for reading their joint authorship.

“It is a melancholly object to those, who walk through this great [country] or travel in the [world], when they see the Streets, the Roads and Cabbin-doors crowded with [would-be authors] importuning every Passenger for Alms.” Thus Jonathan Swift, but now I want to make my modest proposal to you. I propose that modesty be our guide. Once I sought to make my way in the world by publishing articles and books and teaching and thereby winning tenure, and my heart goes out to all those who crowd the aisles of the book exhibits at the MLA annual meeting and the corridors of the hotels where interviews are taking place. Those corridors, where you cannot make eye contact with anyone, I will never forget. But does the current system for granting tenure make sense, based as it is in large part on the imperative that those who would win tenure publish one and often two books? I think not, and I think the members of the MLA should rise up and insist that these expectations be demolished and that other, more modest expectations be erected in their place.

Purpose The authors translate their the concept of integrative thinking into a repeatable methodology, supported by a set of tools for thinking through difficult or “wicked“ problems, a process that offers a better chance of rejecting false choices and of finding a way through to an innovative alternative. Design/methodology/approach The authors divide their process into four phases. A case example illustrates each phase. Findings The four phases that make up the integrative thinking 10;process: articulating opposing ways to solve a vexing problem; analyzing those opposing models to truly understand them; attempting to resolve the antithetical approaches of the opposing models by creating new models that contain elements of the original alternatives but are superior to either one and testing the potential new solutions. Research limitations/implications Additional examples and detailed guidance is provided in the authors new book “Creating Great Choices: A Leader’s Guide to Integrative Thinking,” (Harvard Business School Press, 2017). Practical implications Several corporate examples of “wicked” problems to which integrative thinking might be applied are: After a merger, the combined sales organization is riven by dissension between proponents of two opposite approaches – one using direct sales and the other channel partners. Abstract:
This paper analyses the book as a means of Nazi indoctrination of Germans in Vojvodina in the 1930s. The paper presents books by Nazi authors that were used as the main literature for ideological indoctrination in the Nazi spirit. Less well-known data are given from the Novi Sad bookstore "Kultura", which specialized in wider scale Nazi literature. The Private German Teachers' School in Novi Vrbas, which was the centre of Nazi propaganda, is a special focus. This is important to mention because future teachers used their position to ideologically guide their students in the Nazi spirit through books. It was published and reported in the Serbian press of that time about the Nazi propaganda that was conducted in the area of the Danube County (Dunavska Banovina). The conclusion of this paper suggests that the books had a huge impact on the nazification of Germans as a Yugoslav minority, at a time when other media (except the press) were hardly present in the national community.

Abstract:
The scientific legacy of Emilia Konstantinovna Bespalova, well-known Russian bibliographer, theorist and historian of bibliography, includes more than 200 works. She laid her own line in theoretical and methodological understanding of bibliography science and activity. “Formation of Bibliographic Thought in Russia (Up to the 60s of the 19th century)” is the last fundamental work of E.K. Bespalova; it describes the philosophical and methodological explication of bibliography as a naturally occurring phenomenon of information nature. There was formed unique method of analysis that considered historical and bibliographic facts in the context of professionalization of bibliographic activity. The analysis of bibliographic phenomena applied by E.K. Bespalova can be generally described as combination of modern theoretical knowledge on bibliography, methodology of system-activity approach and philosophy of historical process. The historical-theoretical method of studying bibliographic activity at different stages of its development allows a modern researcher to see the institutional significance of bibliographic processes as one of the full-fledged components of the global information picture.Analyzing the initial, original object of bibliographic activity — a book, the scientist proves that it was the process of replication and therefore the need to create the secondary structure of a book in a form of title page, which made a book to be the “book”. Through the concept of “book” E.K. Bespalova also traces interaction and sequential connection of three systems — “knowledge”, “book” (“document”) and “bibliographic document”. From the point of view of cognitive potential of the history of bibliography, bibliographical guide is of historical and theoretical interest being the result of activity and the object of desobjectivation in it of the conceptual theoretical-methodological and historical representations of authors, composers and doers of the history of bibliography. As the main differentiation of bibliographic products, Bespalova puts forward the division into timer bibliographic subsystems (reflection of current, retrospective, prospective primary flow) and chorographic subsystems that restrict documentary flows by the territorial and linguistic principle. The historical method by E.K. Bespalova reveals a wide range of theoretical foundations that enrich modern bibliography science.

Abstract:
This article presents, from the perspective of STS (Science, Technology and Society), one of the didactic resources most used by teachers: the textbook. The objective was to identify the conceptions present, regarding STS, in the textbooks of Chemistry for High School, belonging to the National Program of Didactic Book of the Ministry of Education. For that, a spreadsheet was created establishing criteria to be evaluated and a guide of definitions to increase the degree of impartiality of the analysis. Thus, this research opted for the collection adopted by the Federal Institute Catarinense (FIC), entitled "Chemistry", by the authors Mortimer and Machado, since the researchers worked at this institution and adopted this teaching material. After evaluation, through the proposed instrument, it was observed that the collection presents some shortcomings in its organization and contextualization - often exemplifying instead of contextualizing -, proposing closed activities and not relating them to everyday life. Therefore, it is identified that the work is relevant to its approach, but presents space for improvements regarding the items mentioned.
