Along with Appleton and Rand McNally, George A. Crofutt helped to establish and popularize the genre of the general traveller's guidebook in the United States. From 1869 to 1884, Crofutt would sell millions of his guides to the American West, which he distinguished from the competition by including copious illustrations. Although the guidebooks claim to arrange and order the West for easy, and almost passive, consumption – to “tell you what is worth seeing” – this article argues that there are two different yet also complimentary modes of representation operating in these popular works. AbstractThis "re-review" deals with the tourist guidebook of Prague, first published in 1881 and later as a reprint in 2002. In this discussion, the reviewer deals with both the structure of the period guide-book - including themes considered relevant for the tourist of the time as well as the book's attempt to present the city in the best possible light to visitors. Of particular interest is the guidebook's presentation of the array of nationalities (Czechs, Germans, Jews) living in the city. This article approaches it as a case of the intricate pattern – an optically unpleasant and complicated ornament that can be depicted. This motif is present in gothic narratives (Poe's ‘Ligeia’, 1838), films (Robert Wise's The Haunting, 1963) as well as outside the genre.
