Abstract:
Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) establishes a chronic infection, usually effectively controlled by the cellular immune response. However, EBV has the potential to escape immune control, such as during malaria exposure, or modulate the immune response. In this study, immune control of EBV was examined in Gambian children in two situations: during malaria exposure and early after EBV infection. Additionally, EBV infection may also inhibit vaccine induced antibody responses, hence its impact on a childhood pentavalent vaccine was studied, but infection had no effect. In contrast to historical studies, a

Abstract:
Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is a conserved DNA virus, which infects mucosal and cutaneous epithelia. Although over 200 types of HPV have been identified which can infect humans, only around 15 high-risk (HR) types have been shown to be responsible for the development of cancer. HPV-16 is the most abundant HR-HPV type being responsible for almost 70% of cervical cancers. HPV-16 consists of 8 genes, the early genes (E1, E2, E4, E5 and the potential oncogenes E6 and E7) responsible for the infection, amplification and proliferation and the late genes (L1 and L2) responsible for the packaging and

Abstract:
The immune system rapidly mounts an innate immune response to invading pathogens that is accompanied by antigen-presentation, to promote the development of the adaptive immune response. These responses orchestrate through signal transduction by PRRs that recognize PAMPs, which results in the expression of various cytokines and mediators to promote pathogen control. Herein, we investigated the role of the type I interferon (IFN)- and the p38MAPK- pathways in response to infection with Salmonella Typhimurium (ST). We delved into the mechanisms through which IFNAR1-signaling results in host susce

Abstract:
Dengue is a vector-borne disease found across much of the world, with an increasing number of cases annually. This thesis explores the dynamics of dengue infection within an individual, and the possible impact of this at a population level. I use mathematical modelling and statistical analysis, tightly coupled with data, as a way of tying together the important components and processes during infection. I model the virus and immune dynamics, capturing the differences between individuals, disease severity and primary/secondary disease (with a focus on hypothesised secondary mechanisms). Within

Abstract:
The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, that causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), is a dynamic process that can be modeled via differential equations. The primary goal of this thesis is to show how to drive any initial state into an equilibrium, called the long-term nonprogressor, in which the infected patient does not develop symptoms of AIDS. We first propose three control methods for HIV treatment. These methods are designed for antiretroviral drug therapy and are based on the understanding of the system dynamics. We apply these control strategies to several HIV dyna

Background: While there is a body of work describing infection control behaviours and factors affecting compliance with guidelines there has been little investigation into understanding and explaining behaviours that occur in everyday practice. Understanding such behaviours may provide a key insight into the challenges of behaviour change. Consequently the main research question in this study is "How can nurse’s infection control behaviour be explained?" Methods: Using an ethnographic approach this interpretative qualitative study uses vignettes, developed from reported practice, to explore nu
