Abstract:
The presence of PT. Eternal Light Television (TATV) as local television in Surakarta and surrounding there initially, viewed pessimistically by the surrounding community. This is very reasonable considering that no television has been established in Surakarta. On April 29, 2004, TATV began broadcasting on air, and was called "Jelang Tayang Perdana". At the start of launching on air or the trial broadcast by TATV it still seemed to be less professional. There are no programs that can be presented such as national television, only limited to advertisements in the form of slides. The screenings are still very simple and not very interesting. In addition to image quality, it may be due to the lack of human resource management. At first, TATV only broadcast for 3 hours and the ShowTime is still limited to daylight hours. After conducting a grand launch on September 1, 2004, TATV began broadcasting for 8 hours per day. After surviving several months with broadcasts for 8 hours per day in subsequent developments, TATV then began pursuing the target to be 14 hours per day. And the current situation of TATV has had broadcast hours of 18 hours per day which continue to the present day. TATV has a strong commitment to fight for the creation of an advanced Indonesian society in all aspects of life, based on positive life values. This commitment is communicated by TATV management, to viewers via TV PROMO, Content (Program on air), or through continuous (intense) event affair. The aim is to create a single perception that is strong in the minds of viewers.

Abstract:
Talk shows on television today are programs that are of interest to television viewers in Indonesia. One of the talk shows that television viewers are interested in is the talk show Rumah Uya Trans7. The show is easily followed by the viewers. The speech acts used in the show are light and easy to understand. Another interesting issue is the speech acts are a violation of the politeness principle. Yet, this violation of the politeness principle is the one that makes the television viewers pay attention to the show. These violations of the politeness principle are very interesting to be analyzed. To find out the violation of the politeness principle in the show, the researcher used the theory of pragmatics and descriptive qualitative method. Data of this research were taken from the fragments of the show in the Rumah Uya Trans7 in November 2018. The source of the data was the speech acts in the program which contained violation of the politeness principle. The method of the research was the observation method (simak bebas libat cakap) and recording as well as note-taking techniques to collect the data. The result of the analysis showed that violation of politeness principle was found in the show in the form of violation of maxim of tact, maxim of sympathy, maxim of agreement, maxim of modesty, maxim of approbation, and maxim of feeling reticence. The suggestion for the deepening of the research is the existence of further research in violation of the politeness principle of similar shows but different television station as e media.

Abstract:
In 1991, Leningrad television broadcast a program that has since become infamous. The program's guest, Sergei Kurekhin, claiming to be a political figure and scientist, conducted an elaborate hoax that he presented as a serious historical exploration into the origins of the Bolshevik revolution. Using visual, textual, and scientific evidence, Kurekhin argued that the revolution was led by people who had been consuming hallucinogenic mushrooms. As a result, their personalities were being replaced by mushroom personalities, and their leader, Vladimir Lenin, was simply a mushroom. This fact, according to Kurekhin, shed new light on many enigmas of Soviet history. Millions of viewers were at a loss: were they witnessing a serious program, a daring prank, a case of unprecedented lunacy? In this article, Alexei Yurchak analyzes that remarkable comedic performance, its social and political effects then and now, and what it may contribute to our understanding of the relationship between politics and irony.

Abstract:
The use and importance of newspaper collections in academic libraries have been in decline as acquisition costs have increased significantly as the difficulty obtaining daily issues in a timely manner has grown, and as newspaper readership has declined nationally. In contrast, today’s student and researcher are using television and Internet news sources heavily. This article explores the role of the academic library’s news collections in complementing the university’s Newspaper Readership Program and supporting faculty efforts to develop their students’ critical thinking and media literacy skills. The authors suggest that digital news forms, including television, should be considered and included as part of the library’s collections. In this light, lessons can be learned from convergence taking place in the news industry. Libraries must also “converge” news sources to provide library users with news sources, which reflect today’s news environment and also reflect the “information cycle.” The newly created News Room at Pattee Library incorporates a three-television news viewing area; a broader selection of newspaper titles (particularly international titles); and a news magazine collection, as well as providing access to a wide variety of news aggregator database, and the library’s significant historical microfilm collection. A temporary television installation and focus groups were used to help inform the development of the News Room and to determine interest and resistance to sound and televisions in the library. The Libraries’ Serials Department provided analysis of newspaper delivery options (and reliability) and related subscription costs, as well as suggestions for reducing the number of missing/nonreceipt issues. In addition, greater focus was placed on niche reference service supporting news sources and news-related research. Use of the News and Microforms Library has increased.

Abstract:
STC89S52 single-chip microcomputer is the control core of intelligent wagon which can automatically enter into garage, which can control direction and speed of the wagon through collection and processing of signals from various sensors on the route in the forward direction, and thus can realize some functions including rapid and stable running through automatic recognition of black guiding line as well as entering into garage through recognition of light source. In addition, voice and light prompting device is used to prompt the action of entering into garage and the exact heading direction of the wagon, namely due west. Moving and turning of the wagon is driven by DC motor, and motor should be driven by L298N driving chip, which has high control accuracy and flexibility in turning. LCD1602 screen is used to display time of running and angle of turning. In addition, design, programming and program debugging for the entire control software are carried out, and the final integration of software and hardware can be realized, based on which intended functions of the wagon can thus be realized.

McCluskey, Alan. "‘Race’ and the Changing Representations of Neanderthals." Human Geography 9, no. 1 (2016): 68–78. http://dx.doi.org/10.1177/194277861600900104.

Full text
Abstract:
This essay first identifies a significant shift in the way Neanderthals have been represented and talked about in both the realms of mainstream science and the mainstream Western media. Within the space of a little over a decade, our early human relatives have been transformed from primitive and inept “savages” to far more sophisticated prototypes of ourselves. The author then proposes that an important but overlooked reason for this rapid change lies in a ground-breaking discovery that only came to light in recent years: the fact that Neanderthal DNA is to be found in today's non sub-Saharan Africans. Such a discovery, the essay holds, suddenly made scientists, journalists and television producers much more receptive to the idea (which had already been floating around, largely neglected, for years) that they had got the Neanderthals entirely wrong. As is argued below, racism and racial ideology have had a distorting influence on Western scientific discourse and practice for the better part of a hundred years. The recent rehabilitation of the Neanderthals may not be the most obvious instance of racial theory guiding scientific discussion and consensus, but, as is this essay contends, there is a strong correlation that cannot and should not be ignored.

Abstract:
This is a post-mortem on Malaysian TeSME (Teaching of Science and Mathematics in English) program based on its comparison with Canadian immersion programs. Malaysia and Canada have some common sociological aspects such as the size of population, the ratio of indigenous people and immigrants, and multilingual contexts. It also has in common various core elements in the set of criteria proposed by Swain and Johnson (1997) to define a prototypical immersion program. Thus, the lessons Canadians have learned from immersion may be seen as significant guiding light for TeSME and other attempts of content-based instruction programs. Canadian immersion has been different from TeSME at least in terms of three core features: overt support exists for the L1; the teachers are bilingual; and the classroom culture is that of the local L1 community. These differences made four issues more prominent: Learning outcome of TeSME; mainstay of TeSME; judicious use of L1; and function of TeSME. Finally some suggestions are proposed: give higher priority to promoting concept development across languages for now; make English classes more effective; promote bilingualism in TeSME; and extend TeSME’s function to understanding and integrating other cultures and languages.

Abstract:
Protein sequences inhabit a discrete set in macromolecular space with incredible capacity to treat human disease. Despite our ability to program and manipulate protein sequences, the vast majority of protein development efforts are still done heuristically without a unified set of guiding principles. This article highlights work in understanding biophysical stability and function of proteins, developing new biophysical measurement tools and building high-throughput screening platforms to explore functional protein sequences. We highlight two primary areas. First, molecular biomechanics is a subfield concerned with the response of proteins to mechanical forces, and how we can leverage mechanical force to control protein function. The second subfield investigates the use of polymers and hydrogels in protein engineering and directed evolution in pursuit of new molecular systems with therapeutic applications. These two subdisciplines complement each other by shedding light onto sequence and structural features that can be used to impart stability into therapeutic proteins.

Chung, Jaewoo. "Mindful navigation with guiding light : design considerations for projector based indoor navigation assistance system." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/70808.

Abstract:
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, School of Architecture and Planning, Program in Media Arts and Sciences, 2012.<br>Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references (p. 113-117).<br>People can easily become mindless in their decision-making and become disengaged from their surroundings when their actions depend on information and guidance from an assistive technology. Research has shown how automated navigation assistance systems lead users to be disengaged from the space through which they are traveling, resulting in poor recollection of the environment and poorer situational decision-making. This disengagement and mindlessness can potentially increase the risk of accidents and lower the quality of user experience. If we can help people become mindfully attentive to the environment and surroundings while carrying out navigation tasks using assistive technologies, I hypothesize that we will have better memory of the space, improved cognitive reconstruction of environment, and better understanding of the immediate situation, all of which will lead to better decision making and more efficient navigation. In this work, I present a new approach for analyzing the problem of navigation assistance for pedestrians, which considers both the physical and psychological constraints of users focused on navigation. I address the physical constraint that eyes should remain "on the street" by providing a new visual interface, named Guiding Light, that offers a mixed reality presentation of guidance information in the environment itself, instead of on a screen. We address the psychological constraint that minds should remain engaged with the environment by applying a framework based on mindfulness and mindlessness theory (Langer 1989) in the design of the system. The theory explains how mindsets affect engagement levels and decision-making in daily activities. In addition, this thesis describes an indoor positioning technology that provides relatively high accuracy localization and heading orientation of a user in indoor environments. The innovation not only involved developing a new sensor but also a software system to collect fingerprint maps and tracking location with the fingerprint maps. This new technology opens up a new area in the field to explore other possibilities of using a magnetic field based positioning system.<br>by Jaewoo Chung.<br>Ph.D.

Abstract:
This chapter examines television news' reporting of the Selma campaign for voting rights that led directly to the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Television cameras present on the Edmund Pettus Bridge on Sunday March 7, 1965, were able to capture the beating, gassing, and brutalizing suffered by voting rights demonstrators as they attempted to march to Montgomery. The uproar generated by that footage generated more support, volunteers, and moral clout for the civil rights movement. This chapter considers how one news program, The CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite, presented the Selma campaign as an ongoing nightly news story, with particular emphasis on its coverage of the campaign's three martyrs: Jimmie Lee Jackson, Rev. James Reeb, and Viola Liuzzo. It also discusses the response of white Selmians in the “glaring light of television” and the commentary in the African American press regarding the television coverage of the campaign.

Abstract:
The aim of this chapter is to shed light on the informal realm of European deliberation and decision-making and the role the Commission presidency plays in it. The Commission presidency occupies a unique intermediary position within the institutional system of the European Union, as the only office that participates in the four European-level policymaking arenas—the College of Commissioners, the European Council, the Council of Ministers, and the European Parliament. Mediative-institutional leadership encompasses the capacity to build consensus in the different decision-making arenas of the European Union as well as managing and guiding the Commission’s work effectively. The chapter analyzes the performance of institutional mediation of three Commission presidents, Walter Hallstein, Jacques Delors, and José Manuel Barroso. The study is based on twenty-nine semi-structured expert interviews as well as fourteen interviews conducted by the Oral History Program of the Historical Archives of the European Union.

Abstract:
Abstract For the explicit purpose of guiding autonomous mobile robots on wide and flat planes, we propose a specially designed guiding sign. It consists of a cylinder with four slits on its surface, and a fluorescent light on the center axis of the cylinder. Two outer slits are parallel to each other, and the other two inner slits are angled. A robot takes an image of the sign with a TV camera. By the threshold operation, it has four bright sets of pixels each of which corresponds to one of the four slits of the cylinder. By measuring the relative distances between those four bright blobs in the image plane, the robot can compute its distance and angle to the direction of the sign using two simple geometrical equations. We have built a mobile robot and a sign. Using a personal computer with an image processor, we have evaluated the accuracy of the proposed method of position and angle measurement, and compared them with the theoretical analysis. The data show good coincidence with the analytical results. We have programmed the characteristics of the measurement, which is called the simulation program. First, the parameters in the simulation program are adjusted. Next, we have done several trajectory following experiments using this simulation program. The simulation program provides us with the results which could not be taken in the actual experiment.
