Due to its lack of the L-gulonolactone oxidase (GULO) enzyme, Nile tilapia is unable to synthesize vitamin C; thus, it requires an adequate level of exogenous vitamin C in its diet. To enhance antioxidant properties and vitamin C-related effects, we employed recombinant technology to integrate the GULO-encoding gene into the Bacillus subtilis chromosome. In this study, fish were divided into four groups: those fed with a basal diet (CON), a basal diet + vitamin C (VC), a basal diet + wild-type B. subtilis (BS), and a basal diet + recombinant B. subtilis (BS+GULO). Abstract:
Microplastics are micro-sized plastic particles formed when plastic debris degrades due to direct sunlight, weather, and environmental factors. Talang Gulo Landfill is a trash disposal facility in Jambi. The Talang Gulo landfill's high trash volume raises the danger of pollution in the surrounding area. The goal of this study is to determine the number of microplastics, the types of microplastic polymers, and the distribution of microplastics in the Talang Gulo Jambi dump. L-ascorbic acid (AsA, vitamin C) plays a vital role in preventing various diseases, particularly scurvy. AsA is known for its antioxidant properties, which help protect against reactive oxygen species generated from metabolic activities; however, at high doses, it may exhibit pro-oxidative effects. The final step in AsA biosynthesis is catalyzed by L-gulono-γ-lactone oxidase (GULO). This enzyme is present in many organisms, but some animals, including humans, guinea pigs, bats, and other primates, are unable to synthesize AsA due to the absence of a functional GULO gene. The GULO enzyme belong

Abstract Mucosal damage in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) involves the dysfunctional immunoregulation of the gut. Among immunoregulatory factors, oxidative stress is abnormally high level in IBDs, and their destructive effects may contribute to the initiation or propagation of the disease. Vitamin C has anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects. So, we investigated the effect of vitamin C on dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis in Gulo(−/−) mice which cannot synthesize vitamin C. Vitamin C-insufficient Gulo(−/−) mice showed the increased oxidative stress and infl

Abstract Cyclic climatic and glacial fluctuations of the Late Quaternary produced a dynamic biogeographic history for high latitudes. To refine our understanding of this history in northwestern North America, we explored geographic structure in a wide-ranging carnivore, the wolverine (Gulo gulo). We examined genetic variation in populations across mainland Alaska, coastal Southeast Alaska, and mainland western Canada using nuclear microsatellite genotypes and sequence data from the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region and Cytochrome b (Cytb) gene. Data from maternally inherited mtDNA refle
