The focus of my dissertation was to ascertain how teachers perceive the threat of school gun violence and determine what factors affect that perception. To do this, a mixed methods approached was used to survey teachers and staff from a Central Pennsylvania School District. Follow-up interviews were conducted to help support and clarify that data. In general, teachers feel safe at school and rarely do they feel unsafe. The teachers surveyed have received school gun violence prevention training; however, they feel this training was moderate or adequate at best. The teachers surveyed believe their schools provide a climate conducive to learning and that the rules and expectations for expected behaviors are clearly stated. Prevention efforts are established as teachers build a rapport with their students and provide a culture where students feel comfortable reporting possible threats. Teachers also work to create a safe school climate by assuring that students treat each other with respect and that they do the same. A majority of teachers also report encouraging students to seek help if they feel a student is in crisis and being able to identify these students and connect them with necessary supports as a result of their relationship with their students. In general, teachers do not perceive school gun violence as an imminent threat and are not preparing for a mass shooting to occur, but instead are being proactive in working to develop and foster students’ social and emotional well-being using school-wide positive supports.

Full textGun violence in America must be addressed at the highest levels of society. Newtown, Aurora, and Virginia Tech were attacks on the very fabric of America. School shootings represent attacks on our nations future. A public health approach to gun violence focuses on prevention. Public safety professionals, educators and community leaders are squandering opportunities to prevent horrific acts of extreme violence. Preparedness is derived by planning, which is critical to mobilizing resources when needed. Rational public policy can work. Sensible gun legislation, which is accessible through a public health approach to gun violence, neither marginalizes nor stigmatizes any one group. University administrators must fully engage the entire arsenal of resources available to confront this pernicious threat. The academic community can create powerful networks for research, collaboration and information sharing. These collective learning environments are investments in the knowledge economy. In order for the police to remain relevant, they must actively engage the community they serve by developing the operational art necessary to cultivate knowledge, relationships and expertise. Police departments must emphasize strategies that improve performance. Police officers must understand the mission and meaning of To Protect and Serve and the consequences of public safety, which often comes at their personal peril. Gun violence in America is a public health epidemic and preventing it requires a collective responsibility.

Full textAfrican American males are killed by gun violence at a greater risk than any other ethnic group, leaving African Americans mothers to cope with grief at disproportionately high rates. A phenomenological method was used to explore the lived experiences of African American women whose sons were killed by gun violence in Philadelphia using Rando’s (1993) six “R” processes of complicated grief theory as a framework. Six themes emerged from the research: faith and spirituality, giving back to the community, personal relationships with others after the death of a son, connections with son after death, worldview, and double grief. Many of these findings indicate that mothers experience and struggle through the “R” processes of grief; they also experience a unique conflict the researcher has termed double grief, the phenomenon of grieving for oneself and for the mother of the perpetrator. This new concept emerged from the research and is discussed along with recommendations and ideas for future research.

Full textGun homicides are highly concentrated in African American communities and are widespread in urban neighborhoods. African American males are disproportionately victims and perpetrators of gun violence, have a higher propensity to use and carry weapons, and are more likely to die due to gun violence. Few studies, however, provide a detailed account of the history of gun carrying, the value of gun carrying, and the individual and situational factors that lead to or inhibit the use of guns among young African American males.
Based on semi-structured interviews of 11 African American males obtained via snowball sampling, this thesis explains the causes of African American male gun violence, and describes the patterns and decision-making processes around gun carrying and the use of guns (i.e. how gun were introduced, obtained, used or not used, loved, and despised) among African American males in Oakland, California. Based on the sample’s insight, this thesis concludes that strengthening collective efficacy and community-police relationships, providing employment and educational opportunities and resources, implementing mentorship and restorative justice programs, and Crime Prevention Through Experimental Design (CPTED) strategies can reduce gun violence.

Full textSwedish society has witnessed a change in recent years regarding the nature and context of community violence. There is a need for effective preventive measures, which in turn requires knowledge of the subject in question. The main purpose of this study was therefore to investigate what possible factors may be contributing to the escalation of community violence with focus on its changed character and context, with a definition at the macro level. The study was based on a qualitative approach with semi-structured interviews as a data collection method. The result shows that the causes of community violence´s context and character change are multifaceted. Several factors are important for the development of community violence. The factors the study highlights are the organization within the Swedish institution, changes in the criminal environment, drugs and the media. The results show that these factors interact with each other, where the organization of Sweden´s institutions has a major impact in how the other factors are expressed in society.

Full textSeveral candidate genes have been suggested to play a role in the development of antisocial behavior in association with social and environmental factors. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship between the gene Catechol-O-Methyltransferase (COMT) and violence; and to examine whether there were interactions between earlier abuse and COMT in the association of violence. Data were drawn from a Swedish population-based study including 2,500 20-24 year olds. The present study found that depending on which variant of the gene one possess, one will be affected to different degree of adverse environmental factors in association with violence.

Full textDr. Eleine Mad is Madeleine Jacobsson's spokesperson for the scientific and paranormal discoveries that arise in her worlds. She describes content, tecniques and aesthetics based on a categorization system where art is divided into different types of components and then decoded as they go. To understand the intuition's involvement in the work process, it is transformed into three separate roles by a Seeker, Collector and a Myntare(In swedish language the one who is a "myntare" -is verbally declaring a concept or term). With these roles I try to describe in what ways intuition is beneficial or devastating to the artistic work. The story of M is about a frog-like character, Delop, who leaves the home planet to seek out other worlds. In her search, Delop finds a world whose views and lifestyles differ from her experiences of "reality" as she learned to survive in it.

""Wheelchair life": Disability and Black survival in the afterlife of gun violence in New Orleans." Tulane University, 2021.
Find full textWheelchair Life: Disability and Black Survival in the Afterlife of Gun Violence is about how gunshot survivors in New Orleans manage their lives and shape their identities after being shot and paralyzed. Following a group of wheelchair users with gunshot induced spinal cord injuries who self-organized into a social network around their devotion to New Orleans parading traditions, this ethnography explores how disability identities are mobilized within the existing stakes of Black survival in the United States. In the racially segregated city of New Orleans, urban gun violence and the wider traumas that are experienced in its aftermath are an immeasurable disruption to Black lives and Black futures. A focus on gun homicides has ignored the life worlds of the injured, particularly those of young Black men, whose experiences are obscured by the legacies and continued violence of anti-Black racism and criminalization of the urban poor, which renders gunshot survivors as guilty or deserving of the violence that happened to them. What does it mean to survive when your survival is a problem both in the sense that you were not expected to survive and your status (as a survivor and a victim) is unacknowledged? “Wheelchair Life” details the varied ways spinal cord injured gunshot survivors contend and contest these realities of social neglect and invisibility, by claiming new forms of mobility and disabled embodiments in public space and forging new modes of caretaking and relationships that enable the “wheelchair life” to be about more than just surviving.
