Abstract:
This paper examines the dynamic boundaries of Chinese identities and the role of family narratives in their formation. It examines the interplay between history and memory, focusing on traditions regarding ancestors of the Fujian Guo lineage of Muslim descent in China, Taiwan and the Philippines, over six centuries. Existing scholarship approaches these traditions in ethnic terms, corresponding to the ethnic discourse prevalent in the P.R.C., focusing solely on mainland groups, but overlooking other variations found overseas. Hence, scholars portray the changing narratives as reflecting a linear process: from past sinicisation, to today’s more “historically authentic” Hui identity. The present analysis offers a broader socio-cultural overview, showing how the pan-Asian Guo lineage re-imagines familial history across time and space by highlighting the forced assimilation narrative in which their early Ming ancestors falsely adopted Guo Ziyi, a Han-Chinese national hero, as their ancestor. The paper follows the narrative’s continuous transformations, analysing different interpretations of assuming Chinese identity among Muslims’ descendants within different contexts of contemporary Asia.

Abstract:
Abstract Background:Chemotherapy has side effects on breast cancer patients, and sleep disturbance is one of the common psychological symptoms. Purpose: This study aimed to examine the incidence of sleep disorders and investigate the relationship between anxiety and depression, hope, social support and sleep disorders in breast cancer patients with chemotherapy in China. Results:Total 350 patients were administered questionnaires, and 329 patients completed the questionnaires. The recovery rate was 94%. The majority of participants reported clinically significant sleep disturbance prior to chemotherapy (67.8%), during chemotherapy (71.8%), and after chemotherapy (72.2%). Pearson correlation analysis showed that the higher the direct support, emotional support, social interaction support, informational support and total social support score, the lower the total PSQI score of breast cancer patients (r = -0.212, -0.292, -0.236, -0.271, and -0.195 p< 0.01, respectively). Multifactorial model analysis showed that direct support, anxiety and age were the three main factors that affected sleep quality in breast cancer patients. Conclusions:social support may provide a powerful tool to reduce anxiety and improve sleep quality in breast cancer patients with chemotherapy. Abstract:
International Baccalaureate (IB) Curriculum is adopted by more and more international schools and direct-subsidy schools in Hong Kong. At the same time, more and more non-Chinese speaking (NCS) students choose to study Chinese Language as a second language in IB curriculum. However, the vocabulary learning is one of the difficulties when they learn Chinese. The Education Bureau has published ‘Consultation Paper on Developing a “Supplementary Guide to the Chinese Language Curriculum for Non-Chinese Speaking Students” ’ and points out those NCS students encounter difficulties in learning Chinese graphemes, tones, vocabulary, etc. These difficulties are related to morpheme. Many researchers have conducted to study on relationship between morphological awareness and lexical knowledge. This dissertation aims to study on the relationship between morphological awareness and lexical ability of IB Middle Year Programme (MYP) students in Hong Kong. This is a quantitative research. Data collection includes two tests of the morphological awareness and lexical ability paper-pencil tests and one summative unit test of Chinese Language subject in a school. IB MYP students of two classes participated in this study and their morphological awareness and lexical ability were tested and analyzed by the statistical analysis software. The objectives of the study are: (1) Analysis on the types of lexicon errors of IB MYP students in Hong Kong; (2) Analysis on the relationship between morphological awareness and lexical ability of IB MYP students in Hong Kong; (3) Suggestions on developing of morphological awareness in learning Chinese Language as a second language. The results find that most of the lexicon errors were related to the tones and radical components of Chinese character, it is suggested to develop the homophone awareness and the orthographic awareness of Chinese character to reduce the lexicon errors. The morphological awareness of students has influence on student’s lexical ability. The homophone awareness has a closer relationship with lexical ability. The morphological awareness of the mental lexicon has an influence on the amount of mental lexicon and the ability of using lexicon. It is suggested to develop the morphological awareness of students in teaching Chinese as a second language to further study the relationship between the development of morphological awareness and mental lexicon in the future.

NGUYEN, VU BAO CHI. "Developing a methodology for ecosystem assessment of Tam Giang-Cau Hai lagoon and estuaries of Thua Thien Hue and Quang Tri Provinces, Central Vietnam." Doctoral thesis, Università Politecnica delle Marche, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/11566/269608.

Abstract:
The objective of this thesis is to create and systematize environmental datasets acquired during a period of nearly two decades at set locations in Tam Giang-Cau Hai lagoon of Thua Thien Hue and Quang Tri Provinces. In addition to physico-chemical parameters, biological proxy indicators of ecosystem integrity were incorporated in the database, in attempt to develop a tool-box methodology to reveal the degree of effectiveness of lagoon and wetland ecosystem functions Coastal plains and wetlands have been privileged sites for human civilizations for millennia. Their habitats and resources have been critical to the development and survival of humanity. Wetland ecosystems are part of our natural assets, providing services worth trillions of US dollars every year and making a vital contribution to life. With increasing demographic pressure and modern society craving for water and food resources, the need to maximize these benefits has never been greater or more urgent. An issue in developing countries is to harmonize environmental conservation and social progress. Human conditions are linked to the state of the environmental where economic activities and social life are carried out. The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment stemmed from the assumption that a close relationship between welfare and prosperity of a community, its security and resilience is related in a multi-faceted way to the salubrity of the environment and its effectiveness in performing functions and providing services supportive to human life. The following approach has been followed to set up a framework environmental conservation and human well-being: - inventory of ecosystems and habitats; - development objectively verifiable and quantifiable indicators to appraise the state of ecosystems; - establish a GIS-based environmental relational database to serve the purpose of planning, management and policy drafting; - develop thematic mapping for planning, using remote-sensing techniques.

Teo, Ian, Pru Mitchell, Fabienne van der Kleij, and Anna Dabrowski. Schools as Community Hubs. Literature Review. Australian Council for Educational Research, November 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.37517/978-1-74286-684-0.

Full text
Abstract:
This literature review focuses on community hub models that include an education setting. The goals of these hubs go beyond improving academic outcomes, and look also to the health and wellbeing of their community. This review explores the ways in which education communities operate as welcoming and enriching places that connect, share, and learn with, not only students, families, and educators, but also their wider community. It focuses on a specific model of school-community partnership, typically known as a school community hub. Core features of community hubs are presented as people, partnerships, place and programs. Benefits and challenges of community hubs are discussed.

Groeneveld, Caspar, Elia Kibga, and Tom Kaye. Deploying an e-Learning Environment in Zanzibar: Feasibility Assessment. EdTech Hub, July 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.53832/edtechhub.0028.

Full text
Abstract:
The Zanzibar Ministry of Education and Vocational Training (MoEVT) and the World Bank (the Bank) approached the EdTech Hub (the Hub) in April 2020 to explore the feasibility of implementing a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). The Hub was requested to focus primarily on the deployment of a VLE in lower secondary education, and this report consequently focuses primarily on this group. The report is structured in four sections: An introduction to provide the background and guiding principles for the engagement with a short overview of the methodology applied. An analysis of the Zanzibar education system with a particular focus on elements relevant to deploying a VLE. This includes the status of ICT infrastructure, and a summary of the stakeholders who will play a role in using or implementing a VLE. A third section that discusses types of VLEs and content organisation, and their applicability to the Zanzibar ecosystem. A conclusion with recommendations for Zanzibar, including short- and long-term steps. In this collaboration with Zanzibar’s MoEVT, the Hub team sought to understand the purpose of the proposed VLE. Based on discussions and user scenarios, we identified two main education challenges a VLE may help to resolve. In the short term, students cannot go to school during the COVID-19 crisis, but need access to educational content. There is content, but no flexible and versatile platform to disseminate content to all students. In the long term, a mechanism to provide students with access to quality, curriculum-aligned content in school, or remotely, is required.
