Two processes may lead to genetic divergence among populations. One is mediated by geography, whereby physical barriers and geographic distance limit gene flow among populations, resulting in divergence due to drift or mutation. Another is ecological speciation, whereby populations adapt to their local environments via natural selection, and gene flow is impeded by selection against dispersers in favor of adapted residents. Adult sex ratio is an important demographic characteristic that can affect population dynamics and behavioural processes, yet the causes of natural sex ratio variation are often uncertain. In the Trinidadian guppy (Poecilia reticulata), considerable variation in adult sex ratio has been documented, despite 1:1 sex ratios at birth. Sex-biased mortality is likely responsible for this pattern, and reasonable mechanisms include predation and resource limitation. This thesis focuses on the guppy, Poecilia reticulata, as an invasive species. Its non-native distribution, the biology behind its success and the reasons for its introduction are examined. A worldwide email survey revealed that the guppy is established in at least 73 countries outside of its native range and that mosquito control schemes and the release of unwanted aquarium fish are the two primary routes of introduction. Guppies exhibit color based sexual dimorphism and females generally prefer the most colorful males. It has also recently been found that guppies possess a large opsin repertoire. As opsins are the receptors responsible for color vision, this ten gene repertoire might have contributed to the evolution of extravagant male coloration in this species. My study starts by characterizing the opsin repertoire of Jenynsia onca, a noncolorful relative of the guppy belonging to the family Anablepidae (sister group to Poeciliidae, of which the guppy is a member). Abstract:
Comparisons of functionally important changes at the molecular level in model systems have identified key adaptations driving isolation and speciation. For example, recent studies suggest mutations in opsins, the genes that encode retinal photoreceptors, influence colour-based female mate choice and have, thereby, contributed to the radiation of African cichlids. To test the hypothesis that the evolution of elaborate colouration in guppies (Poecilia reticulata) is also associated with opsin gene diversity, long wavelength-sensitive (LWS) opsin genes were sequenced in six species of the family
