Abstract:
AbstractThis case study of youth cultural production in Cameroon examines how lycée students introduce idioms of tradition and the ancestral past into the lycée context by creating a club modelled on a dance society popular in the region. In pre-colonial rural Tupuriland, the gurna society was a key site for the moral–sexual socialisation of youth and a cultural–political arena where competition was staged between individuals and villages during death celebrations. Today, the gurna remains popular in Tupuri villages, though it has been recreated in urban contexts and modern institutions where members use its forms to mediate new social relations and modern realities. This paper explores the meanings, functions, and effects of the creation of the ‘Gurna Club’ by students in the Lycée de Doukoula, by examining students' Youth Day dance performances, vibrant song discourse, and nostalgia for earlier forms of indigenous socialisation (e.g. the gurna, youth initiation, and wrestling). By inserting the communal poetics of the gurna into the lycée, Tupuri youth seek to yoke multiple facets of their identity, making visible their desire to be gurna, even as they pursue their civic obligations as students. In creating the Gurna Club, students begin to participate in an increasing trend in Cameroon toward the use of idioms of parochialism (such as ethnically based elite associations) as strategies for garnering national power and recognition.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Several Shigella flexneri mutants with defects in aromatic amino acid and/or purine biosynthesis have been evaluated as vaccines in humans or in animal models. To be suitable as a vaccine, a mutant has to show virulence attenuation, minimal reactogenicity, and a good immunogenic potential in animal models. With this aim, we have constructed five S. flexneri 5 (wild-type strain M90T) mutants with inactivation of one or two of the loci purEK, purHD, and guaBA, governing early or late steps of purine biosynthesis. The mutants have been analyzed in vitro in cell cultures and in vivo in the Sereny test and in the murine pulmonary model of shigellosis. M90T guaBA, M90T guaBA purEK, M90T guaBA purHD, and M90T purHD purEK gave a negative result in the Sereny test. In contrast, in the murine pulmonary model all of the strains had the same 50% lethal dose as the wild type, except M90T guaBA purHD, which did not result in death of the animals. Nevertheless, bacterial counts in infected lungs, immunohistochemistry, and reverse transcription-PCR analysis of mRNAs for tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), gamma interferon (IFN-γ), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), IL-6, IL-12, and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) revealed significant differences among the strains. At 72 h postinfection, M90T guaBA purHD still induced proinflammatory cytokines and factors such as IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, and iNOS, along with cytokines such as IL-12 and IFN-γ. Moreover, in the absence of evident lesions in murine tissues, this mutant highly stimulated major histocompatibility complex class II expression, showing a significant ability to activate the innate immunity of the host.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper reports the investigation of a community-acquired outbreak of Legionnaires'; disease in the municipalities of Vic and Gurb (Central Region of Catalonia, Spain). There were 55 cases reported in October and November 2005. An epidemiological and environmental investigation was undertaken. Thirty-five case patients (64%) lived in Vic or Gurb, while 36% had visited or worked in Vic or Gurb during the 10 days before onset of symptoms, but no commonly frequented building could be identified. Water probes for culture were obtained from 30 cooling towers. In five cooling towers of two industrial settings in Gurb (plants A and B), Legionella pneumophila (Lp) serogroup 1 was present. Two Lp-1 strains were recovered from cooling towers in plants A and B. The Lp-1 strain from plant A showed a PGFE profile identical with those obtained from three patients. The exposure to Legionella pneumophila apparently occurred in a large area, since 43 of the 55 cases lived, visited or worked within a distance of 1,800 m from plant A, and six cases in a distance between 2,500 and 3,400 m. The inspections of cooling towers in plant A revealed inadequate disinfectant doses of biocide, non-existent maintenance records on weekends and wrong sample points for routine microbial check-ups. Weather conditions in October 2005 template temperature and high humidity (wind conditions are unappreciable) could have been favourable factors in this outbreak together with the flat terrain of Gurb and Vic area, explaining the extensive horizontal airborne dissemination of contaminated aerosols. The outbreak could have been prevented by proper and correct maintenance of the cooling tower at plant A.

Abstract:
High productivity breed cows are delivered to the Republic recently for intensive development of livestock. Subsidies are allocated to farmers, modern type livestock complexes are constructed by state. But, although all conducted works, there are several diseases which prevent the development of livestock. The leading one of such diseases are diseases occurred after delivery among breed cows. Along with various factors, special attention involves the age of animals and number of lactation in occurrence of such diseases. In order to study the effect of livestock age and the number of lactations on the occurrence of diseases, a study was conducted on highly productive thoroughbred and local cows of the Guba-Khachmaz region. During the study period, on the farms located in the Guba, Gusar, Khachmaz regions of the Guba-Khachmaz economic region, 4826 cattle were examined. Thus, in the Guba region, 828 heads of cows were examined: 130 heads at the Shahin farm, 141 heads at the Guneshli farm, 438 heads at the Pirvahid farm, and 119 heads at private farms. In the Gusar region, a total of 3696 cattle were examined: 3540 animals in the Shahdag livestock complex, 119 cows on private farms. In the Khachmaz region, 302 heads of cattle were examined: on the Isaev farm – 170 heads, on private farms - 132 heads of cows. Metritis was observed in 361cows from 4826 cows between 3–8 ages and older, as well as passing lactation for 6 and more times (7.5%), mastitis in 278 of 4826 cows (5.8%), latency delay in 106 of 4826 cows (2.2%), and birth paresis in 42 of 4826 cows (0.9%) in Guba – Khachmaz natural – economic geographic region. The results of the study show that as the age of cows and the number of lactations increase, their sensitivity to postpartum diseases increases.
