Abstract:

Tracked and inscribed across the centuries by traders, pilgrims and imperial competitors, the Indian Ocean is written into literature in English by Joseph Conrad, and later by selected novelists from the region. As this thesis suggests, the Indian Ocean is imagined as a space of littoral interconnections, nomadic cosmopolitanisms, ancient networks of trade and contemporary networks of cooperation and crime. This thesis considers selected fiction written in English from or about the Indian Ocean—from the particular culture around its shores, and about the interconnections among its port cities.

The Cape gurnard (Chelidonichthys capensis) and the lesser gurnard (Chelidonichthys queketti) are two members of the Triglidae family found off Southern Africa. Chelidonichthys capensis is distributed from depths of 10 m to 390 m in subtropical waters between Namibia and Mozambique, while C. queketti is distributed from 0 m to 150 m in subtropical waters from Namibia to southern Mozambique. This thesis presents closed loop control of active Gurney flaps on rotors. Firstly, it builds on the Helicopter Multi-Block 2 CFD solver of the University of Liverpool and demonstrates the implementation and use of Gurney flaps on wings, and rotors. A two-dimensional numerical investigation was performed to determine the effect of a Gurney flap on symmetric and cambered airfoils at very low Reynolds number. A Gurney flap is a device consisting of a small tab attached at the trailing edge and perpendicular to the chord line of the airfoil. Originally installed on a race car wing, a Gurney flap was proven to have a positive influence on the lift to drag ratio, and leading therefore to better efficiency and performance. This project examined the effect of Gurney flaps on a 2D, 2-ft chord NACA 0036 airfoil in the Cal Poly 3’x4’ low speed wind tunnel at 25 m/s. It also covered the numerical simulation of the experiment in computational fluid dynamics (CFD). During the study, problems with the wind tunnel data were seen. After a careful diagnosis, the problem was traced to dirty flow conditioners which were subsequently replaced. Five Gurney flaps at 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5% of the chord were tested. The South African demersal trawl fishery, as with most trawl-directed fisheries worldwide, has a substantial bycatch component. With increasing commercial emphasis being placed on retained bycatch, an urgent need has arisen to investigate these species. In the past the bycatch component has received little research or management attention. The Central figure in this thesis is William Gurnall M.A. (Cambridge) who lived from 1616 to 1679. He was the Rector of the Lavenham Parish church for 35 years, 1644/45-1679. He was one of the few Puritans who remained in the Established Church after the 1662 Act of Uniformity had been promulgated. His 'The Christian in Complete Armour' is one of the greatest practical-pastoral works to come from the pen of any Puritan. It is firmly based on Calvinistic theological principles.
