ABSTRACTUgandan colonial authorities carved Bugisu and Bukedi districts out of Mbale district in 1954, isolating Mbale town as a separate entity. With ethnic tensions escalating as independence approached, Gisu and Gwere fought for Mbale's ownership. Empowered by decentralisation, Bugisu District Council pressed the colonial state to declare Mbale part of Bugisu, viewing the town as key to the region's wealth, and providing a symbolic status similar to that enjoyed by Uganda's leading ethnic groups. While traditional anthropological models of lineality have been largely dismissed in recent scholarship, the problem remains that patrilineages and patriclans have played important roles in the lives of the Ganda, Gwere, Soga and their North Nyanza ancestors. By carefully examining changes and continuities in the form and content of patrilineality it becomes possible to understand it as historically contingent. Purpose: In developing countries, such as Zimbabwe, the nexus between green innovation and sustainable economic development has not been thoroughly investigated. To fill this gap, this study examined the role of green innovation in promoting sustainable economic development in Gweru and Zimbabwe. Research Methodology: Interpretivist philosophy underpinned qualitative data collection through a multi-case study method and thematic analysis approaches. Fifteen purposively and conveniently sampled participants participated in face-to-face interviews and focus-group discussions. Results: The study’

This study identifies and analyses the occupational risks associated with solid waste management practices in the informal enterprises of Gweru. Many concerns have been raised about the potential harm from waste to the environment and the general public, but the risks and consequent costs of occupational hazards in waste management have received little attention in the rush to adopt or adapt technologies such as composting. A multimethods research design that triangulates qualitative and quantitative research paradigms is employed in this study. The quantitative design involves physical charac

The study aimed to establish the views of residents of Old Senga, City of Gweru, on the proposal by the government to ban disposable baby diapers in Zimbabwe. Soiled disposable baby diapers have become an environmental nuisance. The issue of whether diapers should be banned or not has generated a contentious debate in the country. This qualitative study was conducted in Old Senga, a high-density residential suburb of the City of Gweru, Zimbabwe. A questionnaire survey, interviews and observations were employed to gather information. Purposive sampling was used in the selection of participants.

Abstract Controlling the false discovery rate (FDR) has been proposed as an alternative to controlling the genomewise error rate (GWER) for detecting quantitative trait loci (QTL) in genome scans. The objective here was to implement FDR in the context of regression interval mapping for multiple traits. Data on five traits from an F2 swine breed cross were used. FDR was implemented using tests at every 1 cM (FDR1) and using tests with the highest test statistic for each marker interval (FDRm). For the latter, a method was developed to predict comparison-wise error rates. At low error rates, FDR
