Abstract:
This study examined the ecology of “free gym” as it occurred in both school lunch hour and after-school community settings. In an effort to understand how urban youth experience sport, an ethnography using multiple methods was conducted to ascertain how urban youth shape their own cultures according to the social forces operating within the gymnasium. A period of sustained observation revealed a student-imposed hierarchy that was dominated by skilled male African American basketball players. Status was gained through what occurred within the free-gym ecology. Students often had to learn the system by “serving time” before they could join a desired level of the hierarchy. While a few students thrived in this environment, most merely survived or were marginalized. Such a setting has implications for how physical education and school culture is subjected to wider societal influences. The presence of socially chronic situations such as free gym require a pedagogy that is more democratic and more enriching, thereby moving from the real toward the ideal.

Abstract:
This article describes and analyses the historical development of gym and fitness culture in general and doping use in this context in particular. Theoretically, the paper utilises the concept of subculture and explores how a subcultural response can be used analytically in relation to processes of cultural normalisation as well as marginalisation. The focus is on historical and symbolic negotiations that have occurred over time, between perceived expressions of extreme body cultures and sociocultural transformations in society—with a perspective on fitness doping in public discourse. Several distinct phases in the history of fitness doping are identified. First, there is an introductory phase in the mid-1950s, in which there is an optimism connected to modernity and thoughts about scientifically-engineered bodies. Secondly, in the 1960s and 70s, a distinct bodybuilding subculture is developed, cultivating previously unseen muscular male bodies. Thirdly, there is a critical phase in the 1980s and 90s, where drugs gradually become morally objectionable. The fourth phase, the fitness revolution, can be seen as a transformational phase in gym culture. The massive bodybuilding body is replaced with the well-defined and moderately muscular fitness body, but at the same time there are strong commercialised values which contribute to the development of a new doping market. Finally, it is possible to speculate on the development of a fifth phase, in which fitness doping is increasingly being filtered into mainstream gym and fitness culture, influencing the fitness doping demography.

Abstract:
The article discusses macho culture in Israeli gyms. It describes male trainees’ efforts to preserve their dominance, facing female trainees’ threat to undermine it. The article analyzes means, such as military icons, physical battles, and vocal expressions, used to convey male dominance at the gym. Two gyms in the metropolis of Tel Aviv were studied by the male researcher for three years, and one suburban gym was studied by the female researcher for a year. Being researchers and trainees from both genders introduced a unique perspective of gender power relations at the gym. The different sociogeographic backgrounds of the studied gyms offered a refreshing understanding of the impact of specific circumstances on gender dominance. The analysis suggests that males’ hegemony can be threatened by potential women’s dominance, as the ethnography on the suburban gym reveals. Moreover, although men are struggling forcefully to preserve their dominance over “males’ territory” at the Tel Aviv gyms, women’s gradual penetration into the perceived masculine space destabilizes it.

Abstract:
In this article, I explore manifest and latent discourses about masculinity in a predominantly white, middle class boxing gym. In this gym, the owner and coaches promote a discourse that emphasizes love, bridgework, and sparring with care. This discourse is part of the gym’s white-collar boxing culture. A key part of this discourse is distancing themselves from other gyms, claiming they promote a violent masculinity. While on the surface the gym criticizes certain ideals and practices associated with American hegemonic masculinity, it still reproduces discourses, norms, and practices associated with it. Employees use a latent discourse that constructs a hybrid masculinity. I argue that employees and members construct a hybrid masculinity by perpetuating ideals and practices associated with American hegemonic masculinity.

The development of popular culture, in particular the development of information technology develops so fast as television, mobile phones and internet network as a part of the development of information technology, ultimately, it has an impact on the creation of a new reality called hyper reality. Media in this case were able to reconstruct a new reality through technological sophistication. The construction of this media also comes into the religious sphere. This can be seen in the figure of an Abdullah Gymanstiar (Aa Gym). Through the media of information, Aa Gym is not only known as an Islamic priest who offers a depth of spirituality but he is also as a celebrity through the image formed. This paper aims to identify and describe the phenomenon of celebrity ustadz, Abdullah Gymnastiar in popular culture, by using hyper semiotics approach Yasraf Amir Piliang.

Abstract:
ORGANIZATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY: ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE REVIEW AT A GYM ABSTRACT The organizational identity of a company comprises vision, mission, and values, through that set of principles the company provides its employees the reason to exist and where they aim to go. Organizational values are approaches the organizational reality and may be chosen during the creation of the company or even along its trajectory, being influenced either by founders and employees. Hence we see, this paper aims to identify organizational values from the administrators and employees’ views at a gym. This paper describes exploratory quantitative research using a Sociodemographic Questionnaire, Organizational Culture Profile Inventory (OCPI), and Organizational Climate Scale (OCS) as tools. After data analysis, administrators and employees’ values were identified in two different views, which suggest divergent factors in the conceptions of those values. Consequently, it is important to note the necessity to align such conceptions in order to strengthen the organizational culture. Keywords: Organizational Culture. Organizational Psychology. Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this study was to explore perceptions and attitudes around physical activity among immigrants from the Democratic Republic of Congo and examine the influence of Congolese cultural beliefs on physical activity practice. Methods In-depth interviews were conducted and augmented by photo-elicitation among 20 Congolese immigrants, distributed equally by gender, aged 35 years or older. The PEN-3 model was used as the cultural conceptual framework. Results Using both the Relationships and Expectations dimension (Perceptions, Enablers, and Nurturers) and Cultural Empowerment dimension (Positive, Existential, and Negative) of the PEN-3 model, emergent themes were categorized around knowing the benefits of being physically active (perceptions), doctor encouragement to be more physically active (enablers), and the habit and local tradition of consuming beer after a soccer match (nurturers). Other emergent themes included Congolese loves to dance (positive), going to the gym is not Congolese culture (existential), and the challenge of increased physical activity (negative). Conclusions Congolese have their intrinsic cultural perceptions and attitudes around types of physical activity. The study disclosed a much more pronounced willingness to dance (as a potential source of increased physical activity) than to go to a gym. As such, if one wants to advocate a regimen of increased physical activity to offset the risk for type 2 diabetes, dance is an alternative to consider among some immigrants.

Abstract:
Gyms are populated by more and more people and there is an increased interest in wellness and health. However, there is a downside to the culture that people choose to step into. Exercise can go too far and take unhealthy directions. The purpose of this study is to examine how norms are created in the gym culture and how unhealthy behaviour is reproduced inside the walls of the gym. We have also done research about how a local gym identifies and handles deviant behaviour such as the use of doping and eating disorders. Methods used are qualitative interviews and participating observations. Our theoretical framework has consisted of social constructivist theories of Peter Berger and Howard S. Becker such as the socially constructed reality and deviant careers. Our results have shown that it’s difficult to draw a line between what is healthy and unhealthy. The gym atmosphere and it`s message, the gym visitors and how they relate to values, interact and confirm each other mutually. This creates the gym norm. The gym handles deviant behaviour by conversations with its visitors and by having close ties to medical care. Knowledge is the key to a healthy approach towards training and also to the identification of deviant behaviour.

Abstract:
This essay revolves around a climbing gym and its culture. The purpose of the essay is to find out how the culture at the climbing gym is affected by both climbing culture and managing culture. A qualitative study was conducted, and semi structured interviews were held with ten respondents who work at the climbing gym in question. To understand and analyse the results, Schein’s theory on organizational culture and Johnson, Scholes and Whittingtons model for culture analysis, The Cultural Web, were used. First, a brief introduction is presented, followed by the theories just mentioned, after which climbing culture is examined according to Schein’s three levels of culture. After that, the essays methodology, is presented – a qualitative study with semi structured interviews. The results and analysis are presented simultaneously, starting with a brief introduction of the climbing gym, and followed by a discussion and conclusions. The result of the study gives a thorough picture of the climbing gym’s culture and its paradigm, which is people oriented, relaxed, and features humour, climbing identity, culture as a managing mechanism, trust issues and a tension between leaders and employees. The employees can be seen as the carriers of climbing culture and the organizational culture. This study concludes that climbing culture and managing culture are not fully compatible, and when brought together, tensions may emerge.

Abstract:
Personal trainers are spending countless of hours at the gym where the society's health interests and the norms around health and fitness are obvious. These norms, ideals and expectations that exists in this context reserve the learning conditions and can therefore shape and affect personal trainers. Aim: The study aims to illustrate how personal trainers talk about norms in gym context and how these norms affect them. Theoretical framework: Thetheoretical framework is a combination of a socio-cultural perspective on learning, where the theories of communities of practice and symbolic capital are an extension. The health theories presented is a holistic health perspective and healthism. Method: The studies method is of qualitative character where the collection of materials made by two semi-structured focusgroup interviews with five professional personal trainers. The study is based on an abductive approach and the results were analysed and compiled by a conventional qualitative contentanalysis. Results: The result showed that the norms around health is bisectional. The personal trainers talked about gym attendants approach to health as of a pursuit of extreme body ideal. At the same time the personal trainers talked about that their own view of health was comprehensive with an emphasis on wellness. It also emerged that personal trainers are expected to "live as they learn" when the gym attendants have expectations of them to live healthy and have a high physical ability and knowledge about exercise and health. It also emerged that the standards created by various participants in the gym, both personal trainers, club owners and gym attendants. Conclusion: The personal trainers talked about norms concerning health, body ideal and exercise at the gym as a difference between gym participantand personal trainers. Another conclusion is that both personal trainers, gym participants and club owners affects the culture and thus all three actors are creators of norm conditioning informal learning

Abstract:
This study deals with the trend of male bodybuilding in Korea and investigates the motivations and aesthetic ideals of Korean male bodybuilders. The author of the study uses the few hitherto academic research works on the subject and tries to give an overview of the history of Korean bodybuilding. Besides, the author has conducted a digital survey in order to collect answers from Korean male bodybuilders about their motivations, aesthetic ideals, etc. The aesthetic ideals of the bodybuilders are then compared to the male aesthetic ideals of modern Korean society and also discussed in relation to the somatic beliefs of NeoConfucianism. The findings are thereafter analyzed in context of two theses of the cultural consequences of globalization, namely homogenization and hybridization. The study concludes that Korean bodybuilders are more concerned with the arduous process of sculpting their physiques rather than the look of them themselves. Although the research material on Korean bodybuilding is scarce and the responses to the conducted survey are small in terms of both numbers and scale, it may be suggested that Korean bodybuilding appears to be an instance of the hybridization thesis. Lastly, the study emphasizes the need for more extensive research on the subject in question.

Abstract:
Due to the high recognized complexity in the process of creation and development of an entrepreneurial business, there are many studies seeking to answer the big question: what truly potentiates or stimulates the entrepreneurial action' Knowing that the behaviors adopted by the individual are influenced or conditioned by its country National Culture, it would be predictable that it can represent a significant predictor of the Entrepreneurial Activity (EA). So, the purpose of this study was to analyze and check in what dimension or in what conditions, the National Culture influences the levels of EA from each country. Based on the scientific work Global Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness (GLOBE), which characterizes societies base on 9 Cultural Dimensions, and using the data related to the Total early-stage Entrepreneurial Activity (TEA) of Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), it was confirmed on this study a meaningful relationship between the National Culture and the EA. Cultures characterized by: high Uncertainty Avoidance and Power Distance, weak In-group Collectivism and high Performance Orientation and Humane Orientation, enhance the growth of EA. It was also intended to analyze if this meaningful relationship was confirmed, when the entrepreneurship motivation is justified by the Need (Necessity-Driven Entrepreneurial Activity). In this case, the results show that the relationship between the Cultural Dimensions are even more significant, adding a meaningful relationship with two more cultural dimensions, high Institutional Collectivism and weak Future Orientation.

Abstract:
AbstractMicrobial community simulations using genome scale metabolic networks (GSMs) are relevant for many application areas, such as the analysis of the human microbiome. Such simulations rely on assumptions about the culturing environment, affecting if the culture may reach a metabolically stationary state with constant microbial concentrations. They also require assumptions on decision making by the microbes: metabolic strategies can be in the interest of individual community members or of the whole community. However, the impact of such common assumptions on community simulation results has not been investigated systematically. Here, we investigate four combinations of assumptions, elucidate how they are applied in literature, provide novel mathematical formulations for their simulation, and show how the resulting predictions differ qualitatively. Crucially, our results stress that different assumption combinations give qualitatively different predictions on microbial coexistence by differential substrate utilization. This fundamental mechanism is critically under explored in the steady state GSM literature with its strong focus on coexistence states due to crossfeeding (division of labor).

Full text
Abstract:
A cell culture microfluidic device has been developed to test the cytotoxicity of anticancer drugs while reproducing multi-organ interactions in vitro. Cells were cultured in separate chambers representing the liver and tumor. The two chambers were connected through a channel to mimick the blood flow. Glioblastoma (GBM) cancer cells (M059K) and hepatoma cells (HepG2) were cultured in the tumor and the liver chambers, respectively. The cytotoxic effect of cancer treatment drug Temolozomide (TMZ) was tested using this two chamber system. The experimental results showed that with the liver cells, the cancer cells showed much higher viability than those without the liver cells. This indicates that the liver metabolism has strong effect on the toxicity of the anticancer drug. The results demonstrated that the perfused two chamber cell culture system has the potential to be used as a platform for drug screening in a more physiologically realistic environment.

Abstract:
A porous polymer-based three-dimensional (3D) cell culture device has been developed as an in vitro tissue model system for the cytotoxicity of anticancer drug test. The device had two chambers connected in tandem, each loaded with a 3D scaffold made of highly biocompatible poly (lactic acid) (PLA). Hepatoma cells (HepG2) and glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) cancer cells were cultured in the two separate porous scaffolds. A peristaltic pump was adopted to realize a perfusion cell culture. In this study, we focus on cell viability inside the 3D porous scaffolds under flow-induced shear stress effects. A flow simulation was conducted to predict the shear stress based on a realistic representation of the porous structure. The simulation results were correlated to the cell variability measurements at different flow rates. It is shown that the modeling approach presented in this paper can be useful for shear stress predication inside porous scaffolds and the computational fluid dynamics model can be an effective way to optimize the operation parameters of perfused 3D cell culture devices.

Abstract:
This research identifies key factors, or safety culture categories, that can be used to help describe the safety culture for the offshore oil and gas industry and develop a comprehensive offshore safety culture assessment toolkit for use by the US Gulf of Mexico (GoM) owners and operators. Detailed questionnaires from selected safety culture frameworks of different industries were collected and analyzed to identify important safety culture factors and key questions for assessment. Safety frameworks from different associations were investigated, including the Center for Offshore Safety (COS), Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE), and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). The safety culture factors of each of these frameworks were generalized and analyzed. The frequency of the safety culture factors in each framework was analyzed to explore commonality. The literature review and analysis identified a list of common factors among safety culture frameworks.

Abstract:
We describe a novel technique, low surface energy gas expansion molding (GEM), to fabricate microbubble arrays in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) which are incorporated into parallel plate flow chambers and tested in microcell culture and cell sorting applications. This architecture confers several operational advantages that distinguish this technology approach from the current state. Here in we describe the GEM molding process and the parameters that are used control microbubble formation. We introduce a vacuum-assisted coating process developed to selectively and spatially alter the PDMS surface chemistry in the wells and on the microchannel surface. We describe results from preliminary microparticle image velocimetery (μPIV) studies conducted to investigate fluid streams above and within microbubble wells and conclude with a discussion of our initial efforts to integrate optical sensors in PDMS.
