Abstract:
Gyms are populated by more and more people and there is an increased interest in wellness and health. However, there is a downside to the culture that people choose to step into. Exercise can go too far and take unhealthy directions. The purpose of this study is to examine how norms are created in the gym culture and how unhealthy behaviour is reproduced inside the walls of the gym. We have also done research about how a local gym identifies and handles deviant behaviour such as the use of doping and eating disorders. Methods used are qualitative interviews and participating observations. Our theoretical framework has consisted of social constructivist theories of Peter Berger and Howard S. Becker such as the socially constructed reality and deviant careers. Our results have shown that it’s difficult to draw a line between what is healthy and unhealthy. The gym atmosphere and it`s message, the gym visitors and how they relate to values, interact and confirm each other mutually. This creates the gym norm. The gym handles deviant behaviour by conversations with its visitors and by having close ties to medical care. Knowledge is the key to a healthy approach towards training and also to the identification of deviant behaviour.

Abstract:
This essay revolves around a climbing gym and its culture. The purpose of the essay is to find out how the culture at the climbing gym is affected by both climbing culture and managing culture. A qualitative study was conducted, and semi structured interviews were held with ten respondents who work at the climbing gym in question. To understand and analyse the results, Schein’s theory on organizational culture and Johnson, Scholes and Whittingtons model for culture analysis, The Cultural Web, were used. First, a brief introduction is presented, followed by the theories just mentioned, after which climbing culture is examined according to Schein’s three levels of culture. After that, the essays methodology, is presented – a qualitative study with semi structured interviews. The results and analysis are presented simultaneously, starting with a brief introduction of the climbing gym, and followed by a discussion and conclusions. The result of the study gives a thorough picture of the climbing gym’s culture and its paradigm, which is people oriented, relaxed, and features humour, climbing identity, culture as a managing mechanism, trust issues and a tension between leaders and employees. The employees can be seen as the carriers of climbing culture and the organizational culture. This study concludes that climbing culture and managing culture are not fully compatible, and when brought together, tensions may emerge.

Abstract:
Personal trainers are spending countless of hours at the gym where the society's health interests and the norms around health and fitness are obvious. These norms, ideals and expectations that exists in this context reserve the learning conditions and can therefore shape and affect personal trainers. Aim: The study aims to illustrate how personal trainers talk about norms in gym context and how these norms affect them. Theoretical framework: Thetheoretical framework is a combination of a socio-cultural perspective on learning, where the theories of communities of practice and symbolic capital are an extension. The health theories presented is a holistic health perspective and healthism. Method: The studies method is of qualitative character where the collection of materials made by two semi-structured focusgroup interviews with five professional personal trainers. The study is based on an abductive approach and the results were analysed and compiled by a conventional qualitative contentanalysis. Results: The result showed that the norms around health is bisectional. The personal trainers talked about gym attendants approach to health as of a pursuit of extreme body ideal. At the same time the personal trainers talked about that their own view of health was comprehensive with an emphasis on wellness. It also emerged that personal trainers are expected to "live as they learn" when the gym attendants have expectations of them to live healthy and have a high physical ability and knowledge about exercise and health. It also emerged that the standards created by various participants in the gym, both personal trainers, club owners and gym attendants. Conclusion: The personal trainers talked about norms concerning health, body ideal and exercise at the gym as a difference between gym participantand personal trainers. Another conclusion is that both personal trainers, gym participants and club owners affects the culture and thus all three actors are creators of norm conditioning informal learning

Abstract:
This study deals with the trend of male bodybuilding in Korea and investigates the motivations and aesthetic ideals of Korean male bodybuilders. The author of the study uses the few hitherto academic research works on the subject and tries to give an overview of the history of Korean bodybuilding. Besides, the author has conducted a digital survey in order to collect answers from Korean male bodybuilders about their motivations, aesthetic ideals, etc. The aesthetic ideals of the bodybuilders are then compared to the male aesthetic ideals of modern Korean society and also discussed in relation to the somatic beliefs of NeoConfucianism. The findings are thereafter analyzed in context of two theses of the cultural consequences of globalization, namely homogenization and hybridization. The study concludes that Korean bodybuilders are more concerned with the arduous process of sculpting their physiques rather than the look of them themselves. Although the research material on Korean bodybuilding is scarce and the responses to the conducted survey are small in terms of both numbers and scale, it may be suggested that Korean bodybuilding appears to be an instance of the hybridization thesis. Lastly, the study emphasizes the need for more extensive research on the subject in question.

Abstract:
Due to the high recognized complexity in the process of creation and development of an entrepreneurial business, there are many studies seeking to answer the big question: what truly potentiates or stimulates the entrepreneurial action' Knowing that the behaviors adopted by the individual are influenced or conditioned by its country National Culture, it would be predictable that it can represent a significant predictor of the Entrepreneurial Activity (EA). So, the purpose of this study was to analyze and check in what dimension or in what conditions, the National Culture influences the levels of EA from each country. Based on the scientific work Global Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness (GLOBE), which characterizes societies base on 9 Cultural Dimensions, and using the data related to the Total early-stage Entrepreneurial Activity (TEA) of Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), it was confirmed on this study a meaningful relationship between the National Culture and the EA. Cultures characterized by: high Uncertainty Avoidance and Power Distance, weak In-group Collectivism and high Performance Orientation and Humane Orientation, enhance the growth of EA. It was also intended to analyze if this meaningful relationship was confirmed, when the entrepreneurship motivation is justified by the Need (Necessity-Driven Entrepreneurial Activity). In this case, the results show that the relationship between the Cultural Dimensions are even more significant, adding a meaningful relationship with two more cultural dimensions, high Institutional Collectivism and weak Future Orientation.

Abstract:
The aims of this work were the functionalization of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs)with Gum Arabic (GA) and the study of the effect of these modified particles on the growth and survival of mammalian cell cultures. MNPs consisting of Fe3O4 were synthesized by the Massart Method and further functionalized with GA by adsorption and covalent coupling via GA amino or carboxylic acid groups. The GA adsorption and binding isotherms displayed a Langmuir type. The maximum of GA coated on MNPs followed the order MNP_GAAPTS < MNP_GA_GAADS < MNP_GAADS < MNP_GAEDC,where MNPs coated with GA via EDC activation gave the best result for coupling (2,80g GA bound/g MNP for 2,62 mg/ml GA (eq.)). The particles were characterized by FTIR, BET, TEM and DLS, showing the greater dispersion and colloidal stability of particles in aqueous solution when GA is present. Cultures of mammalian cell lines(HEK293, CHO and TE671) were grown in the presence of uncoated and GA coated MNPs. Cellular viability was assessed for different incubation periods by means of the Trypan Blue exclusion test and by comparing cellular density with that of cells grown in the absence of particles. Different MNPs need different incubation periods to deposit at cellular surface, and the results vary with the cell type tested. With HEK293 cells, MNP_GAAPTS attach to the cell surface after only 30 minutes, while bare magnetite and MNP_GAEDC have a greater effect on compromising cellular viability. On the other hand, MNP_GAADS needed longer incubation periods to attach to the cell surface and caused less cellular damage for identical incubation times with the other particles tested.

Abstract:
In this study Disneyland is analysed as a model for the creation of an aesthetic of Postmodern consumer culture, hyperreality and semiotic content. It explores Postmodern society and its visual art preferences, whilst revealing an ubiquitous aesthetic for Postmodern spectator-consumers as actors on the proverbial Postmodern stage. The various manifestations of 'Disneyfied' consumerism, hyperreality and semiotic content collectively reveal a society saturated with mass media produced imagery and messages. In this milieu, this study explores the responsibilities as well as opportunities that are presented to the artist via a Disneyland aesthetic. These include the awareness of stereotypic information in the mass media, the exercise of responsible choice over complacent spectatorship, the celebration of newly acquired imagery, as well as the discovery of richer semiotic essences that assist a society in redefining itself. The central fear of an Orwellian 'Big Brother' syndrome and entertainment or mass media bombardment, indicates a central problem in Postmodern society. In this connection, spectator-consumers are saturated with American cultural goods via imagery, mass media messages, and fabricated 'hyperrealities' which are regarded as master narratives. The final emphasis is placed on responsible choice and meditated comprehension of personal spectatorship, as well as the manifestation of the latent power of mass media in the Information Revolution era.

Rushbrook, Elisabeth Louise. "Models of controversy : reflections on cultural theory and the GM crop debate." Thesis, University of Gloucestershire, 2002. http://eprints.glos.ac.uk/3078/.

Full text
Abstract:
In the 1990s social scientists researching public perceptions of GM foods recommended the introduction of new modes of public participation to make decision-making more inclusive. This research utilises categories and concepts from cultural theory (as developed by anthropologists Mary Douglas, Michael Thompson and Steve Rayner, and political scientists Aaron Wildavsky and Richard Ellis) as tools to consider how a range of opinions, illustrated by cultural theory's ideal types, were represented within the GM crop debate. By doing so, it considers whether this approach supports the notion that greater public participation would improve inclusiveness. Furthermore, it considers how best to model the ways that individuals utilised the discourse of cultural theory's ideal types, and whether this has implications for seeking greater inclusiveness. The research is based upon 55 one-to-one interviews that were conducted with various individuals engaged in the GM crop debate in 2000, and secondary sources of data such as media coverage, electronic mailing lists and public meetings between 1996 and 2002. It was determined that the discourses of cultural theory's ideal types were best presented along a continuum, with the hierarchists in the centre and the egalitarians and individualists at either extreme. Within the wider public debate, the media and public reflected the concerns of egalitarians, while government discourse reflected the concerns of hicrarchists. By enabling the public to have a greater say in decision-making,it is asserted that decisions will favour the egalitarian outlook and will ignore the wisdom of cultural theory's other ideal types. Furthermore, since the discourse of those engaged in the debate included all but the most fatalistic comments made by members of the public, it is argued that public participation is unlikely to bring any new voices to the debate. Rather than introducing new modes of public participation,t his research recommends that the government actively consults with individuals already engaged in the GM crop debate on all issues, including those of a more political nature. The aim of such an exercise would be to identify, communicate and consider the full range of opinions available so that decisions can become more fully informed, transparent and trusted.

Nader, Richard Harrison. "Cultural impacts on public perceptions of agricultural biotechnology: comparison between South Korea and the United States." Texas A&M University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/4976.

Abstract:
According to Millar (1996), the gulf between science and society is growing. Technologies are tools cultures develop to solve society's problems. The rapid dispersion of science and technology across cultural borders through trade, technology transfer and exchange, increasingly requires people in different cultures to make choices about accepting or rejecting artifacts of science and technology such as genetically modified (GM) foods, which originate primarily from the United States. These issues challenge policy makers and scientists to account for the affects of different cultural perspectives on controversial scientific issues. Given the controversy across cultures over acceptance or rejection of genetically modified (GM) foods, GM foods are an excellent example with which to begin to reveal how culture impacts public perceptions of the risk and benefits of science and technology in different societies. This research will: 1. Define public awareness and understanding of science, specifically GM foods; 2. Examine culture's impact on knowledge, including different cultural approaches to research; and 3. Compare recent findings of a bi-national public opinion survey on GM comparing in South Korea and the United States. The proposed research outlines two research questions: 1) How and in what ways do South Koreans and Americans differ in their opinions about GMOs? This question is important for gathering current points of contrast about how the two cultures may differ; and 2) What role does culture play on opinion formation about GM foods? Through grounded theory, the researcher will investigate how cultural differences help explain opinion on public perceptions of GM foods. Is it possible to identify common cultural factors that impact public perceptions of GM foods between South Koreans and Americans? The study will utilize both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. Higher education is a major producer of new science and technology. The study is significant for higher education administrators who must understand cultural factors impacting science internationally and globalization of the academic enterprise.

The present work anchors on the attempt to investigate within the fiction novel by the French writer Lolita Pille and the Brazilian André Sant’Anna, the formal and thematic alterations which the romance novel has been showing to represent the experiences from the individuals integrated into the contemporary world – hypermodern age and hyperstage, thus relating to Gilles Lipovetsky (2009). As attested by Mikhail Bakhtin (1988) and Marthe Robert (2007), if the romance novel never reaches its limits, it is possible to glimpse new forms of the romance representation in the fictions of Pille and Sant’Anna. The content from their works is demarcated by the use of expressive strategies that try to accentuate the impoverishment of the characters’ configurations and relations stablished among them, as always written in an immediate space, detatched from the modern universalism and marked by the cacophony of signs and symbols from the global consumerism that is abundant in the hypermodern and hyper stage era. This is the age in which culture loses its monolithic and elevated status, now becoming a matter of media, therefore, crossed by the pluralism of the massive, imaginary and multimedia forms, inherent to the consumerist cosmos, and in which once were postponed to ostracism by the high modernism. Thus, certain form of contemporary narratives, and here are inserted the novels Bubble gum (2004), by Lolita Pille and O paraíso é bem bacana (2006), by André Sant’Anna, instead of representing the materiality of the real, end up absorbing a discursive style adapted from the media and hyperstage culture, developing a prose ruled by a “video style” or “videography” (JAMESON, 2002; DUBOIS, 2004), which contributes to doubt on the analytic paradigms used by modernity in what refers to the novel aspect and hermeneutic meaning aroused by the work in the receiver. In this sense, the thesis procedures on an analytic study on the two referred novels, lining up on a bibliographic and quality research, as also as treading an investigative course that focus on highlighting how the social contexts of the novels articulate themselves under the literary, sociologic, historical and cultural points of view. From this perspective, oriented by the notion of concepts inherent to the field of culture and contemporary studies, we will promote an analysis on the intrinsic structural processes regarding each novel lastly directing to the search of elements thatprove their resistance, or not, to the standards set by the order of globalized capitalism.

Abstract:
Using data from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, this paper examines differences in entrepreneurial perceptions (fear of failure, opportunity perception, self-efficacy, public opinion) between CEE and non-CEE countries, before and after the 2008 recession, as well as the effects of these perceptions on entrepreneurial motivation and overall levels of activity. The results suggest that CEE countries have systematically more pessimistic outlooks in terms of fear of failure and opportunity perception, but no difference from non-CEE countries in self-efficacy and public opinion. Additionally, most of the difference in fear of failure and opportunity perception, along with an increase in necessity-motivated entrepreneurship, comes after the recession, suggesting less durability and resilience of optimistic entrepreneurial perceptions in CEE countries. Finally, there is evidence of a higher threshold for a perceived opportunity to become a business reality in these post-socialist CEE countries.

Lewis, William R. "Reframing strategic inertia : the politics of innovation and the case of GM biotechnology." Thesis, University of Essex, 2017. http://repository.essex.ac.uk/20061/.

Full text
Abstract:
In a broad sense this thesis concerns the politics (and ethics) of strategic management, organisational psychology, organisational narratives, knowledge management and conditions of innovation. More specifically, this is research into the dimension of politics and the legitimacy of power relations within the synchronization of time and space in social organisations, typically as part of the design and implementation of strategy, in context of organisational definitions of innovation and contestations of 'the new'. With a conceptual archaeology, the thesis contends that strategy research focuses on the nodal concepts of 'inertia', 'adaptation' and 'friction', in context of three past conceptual frameworks: namely, Newtonian mechanics, Hobbesian interpretations of evolution, and Clausewitzian military theory. A genealogical approach is used to reveal the persistent influence of the Newtonian notion of simultaneity (absolute time and absolute space) across these three frameworks in their combinatorial guise in the discourse of strategic management. The genealogy unfreezes the nodal concepts by showing the history of their contingent construction and selection. Finally, a critical analysis scrutinizes the contextual appropriateness of applying the concept of simultaneity to social matters. The thesis rejects simultaneity and its dominant position as an 'articulatory practice' of organisational strategy. By decoupling the notion of simultaneity from frames through which sense is made of motion and events, the grip that structuralism has on organisational strategy is loosened and by substituting simultaneity with political power the implications for strategic management become clear. The approach draws from Political Discourse Theory to reframe the strategy discourse, in its current conception, as hegemonic and an antagonistic system of 'Politics' that, instead of facilitating either stability or innovation, leads, instead, to 'conceptual inertia' and economic stagnation, by repressing emergences of 'the Political'. The thesis proposes a strategy of 'agonism' as an alternative. Rather than replacing one despotic concept with another, the suggestion of agonistic strategy is made because agonism allows for its own reinterpretation, thus does not represent a sedimented centre of a discourse. In this way, agonism is less susceptible to stagnation, and more amenable to innovation. The theoretical framework is then accompanied with a study of the design and implementation of strategy within a research institute engaged with the innovation of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) using the CRISPR-cas9 technique. The selection of this case organisation allows for an analysis of the politics and power relations at play in the definitions of innovation, and a means to ground a study of the social construction of reality within an empirical setting regarding the strategic development of genetic constructs.

Downing, D. "Local food, cultural risk and GM controversies : a case study of networks and narratives in Dorset, UK (and beyond)." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2010. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/19984/.

Full text
Abstract:
The release of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) into the environment and food chain in the UK has produced one of the most visible and enduring cultural controversies in recent times. This research explores the ways in which these debates unfolded and were mobilised in the context of one region, the southern county of Dorset, where Farm Scale Evaluations of GM crop varieties were carried out. Contrary to existing studies that focus on conceptions of the specifically ‘genetic’ aspect of GMOs, typically associated with feelings of ‘unnaturalness’, and potential health/environmental risks, I refocus on the ‘modified’ aspect. Modify is a synonym for change and I argue this controversy is all about contested cultural change. Understood as such this is less a problem of culture interfering with nature; but rather a problem of competing cultural networks, as alternative ways of doing and being are subjected to, what I term, cultural risk. Ethnographic participant observation, semi-structured interviews and other qualitative methods were used to trace the ongoing construction and defence of local food networks in Dorset, a hub of social/economic activity in the construction of new food cultures and a centre of protest in the Farm Scale Evaluations. Simultaneous ‘virtual’ ethnography was also carried out as activist groups, historically connected to performative protest in Dorset, initiated network-building activities in response to trials of GM potatoes elsewhere in the UK. By utilising theories of cultural change and rhetoric, this research asks: what cultures are at stake here in the GM controversy? How do they identify and define themselves? Upon what resources do they depend? How do they persuade others to travel with them? Throughout I suggest that a key role is played by the rhetorical weaponry of the story, a crucial tool in both boundary-making and history-making processes within the ‘serious games’ of culture.

Abstract:
This dissertation investigates the role of architecture in the emergence of community identity with specific reference to the spontaneous surfacing and expansion of informal settlements within the South African context and the need for fundamental public service infrastructure provision. The aim is to understand and illustrate the significance of contextual infrastructure provision as catalyst in the emergence of social and cultural networks. In analysing the current innovative survival strategies induced by the community themselves, a theoretical premise will be established regarding the implications of an "African urbanist" approach to infrastructure and means of applying it in design. The current rate of urbanization within the South African context has resulted in several human settlements expanding organically, attempting to meet the increasing housing demands whilst neglecting the provision of platforms for various interwoven layers of urban fabric and public services. These platforms are integral in the shaping of cultural and community identity. The intent of the proposal is to provide an interface between the public and the built fabric that serves the needs of, as well as enhances the quotidian praxis within the Eastern Mamelodi precinct. The proposal intends to disclose an existing cultural language and identity by establishing physical loci that host and exhibit quotidian social practices unique to Mamelodi. Through theoretical and contextual enquiry the study provides an understanding of the role as well as the necessity of infrastructure architecture manifested into an appropriate solution which will facilitate the corroboration of a unique cultural identity.

Grunewald, Tosca Dina. "For(t)midable Landscapes : past cultural landscapes as a model to aid ecological and social healing at Fort West Village." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/31629.

Abstract:
Traditionally cultural landscape of the past involved a dialogue between natural system, human modifications and the value given by humans to the landscape, ultimately nurturing a healthy interaction between human and natural systems. Development pressures on remnants of these past harmonious cultural landscapes threatens the memory and therewith the future possibility of this healthy interaction. With looming exponential urban growth in African cities in the near future, it is important to learn from and protect the few past remnants that are left. The main question that was explored in the dissertation is how a degraded cultural landscape can be regenerated to establish social and ecological health. The hypothesis proposed that degraded cultural landscapes can be regenerated using principles of past cultural landscapes that can reconnect fragmented human and natural systems. A degraded cultural landscape settled against the backdrop of the Witwatersberg Ridge served as the location for the testing of the hypothesis. This site, situated near Danville and Lotus Gardens in Pretoria West is a former leprosy colony called Fort West. The aim of the dissertation was to find methods for the regeneration of the degraded cultural landscape. It was proposed that an integrated methodology be followed that brings together a site’s cultural, natural and economic ‘capital’ or latent potential. The integration of these three capitals was proposed in two ways: through applying five principles of ecological design as set out by Van der Ryn and Cowan (1996); and by raising awareness and educating society and the community as proposed by Farina (2000). This process delivered a set of design guidelines for degraded cultural landscapes. The approach matches biological diversity with cultural diversity, ensuring that that the ecological relevance of a cultural landscape and its capacity to inform and guide other human activities are met. The design intervention was applied at three different scales: framework, master plan and sketch plan. Interventions are proposed at each scale that can improve the natural and social health of Fort West. The cultural, natural and economic capital of the site is harnessed by reconnecting past and existing potential in these three fields and integrating proposed natural and cultural systems in this way. Education and awareness is at the forefront of all proposed interventions. In this way a public space that facilitates the reintroduction of biodiversity and also assists in the regeneration of the Fort West community can be established.

Arthropods have been a major cause of agricultural losses worldwide. Only in Brazil can these losses reach 7.7% per year. The extensive use of synthetic pesticides has been the main form of control of this type of pest, however, the adverse effects of these compounds for both the environment and human health have motivated the search for less impactful alternatives. In this context, several mechanisms are being studied in order to minimize these damages, such as the development of modified release systems using biodegradable polymers and proteins. In addition to this, the use of botanical pesticides has also shown potential for combating these pests, due to the lower impacts caused by these products of natural origin. Therefore, the present work showed the development (preparation and characterization) of nanocarrier systems produced from chitosan and gum arabic polymers and zein protein for the botanical compounds (geraniol, citronellal, eugenol and cinnamaldehyde), as well as the potential effects and phytotoxic systems. In addition, tests of the biological activity of these systems on agricultural pests (whitefly, two-spotted spider mite and soybean looper) were also carried out. The botanical compounds showed high encapsulation efficiency in both carrier systems, and the systems were able to protect the compounds against premature degradation and also against ultraviolet radiation. The phyto and cytotoxicity results showed that encapsulation decreased the toxic effect of the active compounds. The systems also showed biological activity against the agricultural pests tested. The zein nanoparticles containing the botanicals showed a repellent effect against the brindle two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae) under laboratory and semi-field conditions, as well as a sublethal effect on soybean looper (Chrysodeixis includes). The chitosan/gum arabic nanoparticles containing geraniol showed attractive effect for whitefly, being promising for applications in trap systems. The importance of this thesis lies in the dimension that the agricultural sector represents for the Brazilian and world economy, in addition to that the market for agricultural pesticides grows annually, in special as Brazil is one of the leaders in the consumption of these products. In this way, the development of new technologies to pest control in agriculture is promising since more efficient pest control systems can be produced, less impacting the environment and consequently to human health.

Abstract:
The Tswaing Meteorite Crater, formed 220 000 years ago, on the farm of Zoutpan, (or also known as the Pretoria Saltpan), had been a topographic and geological riddle for a long period of time. The gathering of salt from the crater was its main attraction for many groups that flocked to the crater, which later became an important beacon of infrastructure, becoming the largest producer of Soda and Salt in the Transvaal in the early 1900’s. Knowledge is an intangible quality of the cultural landscape and its history which can be lost in the blink of an eye if it is not preserved, commemorated and conserved for future generations. Through the investigation of Inclusive Design and the application of its principles, the narrative which is Tswaing, can be made accessible to all by revealing the concealed narrative of the place, tangible and intangible, through time. The afterthought or lack of design for disabled individuals can be seen in many projects. By ensuring accessibility is part of the design process from the onset of the project, valuable resources are not needlessly wasted later. As a result the cultural landscape and its secrets can be uncovered and shared with all.

Abstract:
The location of Černá louka is situated between the city-centre of Moravská Ostrava and an area of Slezská Ostrava next to the confluence of two rivers – Ostravice and Lučina. The development at the building site of Černá louka is a result from an international competition 2010, which winner was the project Culture Meadow from studio Maxwan. The main idea of the project is to concentrate cultural and educational buildings around a culture meadow. This design has been used as a default situation for the master´s thesis. The complex of schools is situated at the parcel of existing Miniuni-site between cultural cluster Černá louka and the residential quarter Nová Karolina. The volume of the school with its front-spaces reacts to the surrounding structures. In the middle of the complex arises a half-public open space, where are located the internal entrances. Because of the placing of the school next to the city-centre the multifunctional pitch is situated on the roof of the gym. The design of the school respects principles of the age differentiation just as the horizontal integration. That´s why the substance makes up a symbiosis of 5 parts - common space, gym, first and second level, gymnasium. These parts are connected together and at the same time enable to use individual parts separately. The building of kindergarten with its garden is separated from the school because of differential needs of the smallest children.

Abstract:
In an increasingly sedentary western context, the responsibility of maintaining the physical condition now lies with the individual. The proliferation of fitness culture has its origin here, being a global phenomenon with an impact felt in the Portuguese context. This is an ethnographic study about a gym in Portugal, with its particular idiosyncratic dimension, but whose general reality is identical to the common landscape of gyms in western societies. Here, the body is trained due to health motivations but, mainly, due to desires of achieving a certain plateau of physical beauty. Negotiations between pain, guilt, discipline, gender, food and representations about the body are established, within a space in which a specific hierarchy and authority relations exist, but where it becomes possible to achieve objectives about the body, individually or collectively.

Entrepreneurial activity has always been a significant issue in academic research. Reviewing entrepreneurial research, such research was grounded in Economy, and some scholars discussed the dimension of characteristics of individual entrepreneur. From the researches in recent years, the key factor influencing entrepreneurial activity was institutionalism. Currently, some researches stated that macroeconomic forms a S-shape relationship with entrepreneurial activity, while some other researches focused on relationships between environment (i.e: law or safety) and entrepreneurial investment. However, it lacks of researches taking consideration of cultural factors. In order to realize the effects of culture and institution on entrepreneurial activities, this research conducted cross-nation comparison on effects of cultural value, institution, and interacting effects of culture and institution on entrepreneurial activity separately. This research adopted self-organizing map for research, and conducted categorizing research on data from global entrepreneur observations, world value survey and global competitive competence survey. Research subjects were nations from these three databases, in total 41 nations were selected as research samples. According to three stages and cultural value of economic development introduced by Michael Porter, this research further added sub-dimension in WEF to conclude 9 propositions and 52 sub-propositions from indices. From these, this research discovered that 1. Culture significantly influences entrepreneurial activity, 2. Distinct institutions would influence entrepreneurial activities and 3. Culture and institution interactively influences entrepreneurial activities.

Because fossil fuels including coal, petroleum and natural gas are going to run out in the future. Thus, renewable energy sources gained increasing interest, and among these, biodiesel reduced the reliance on petroleum. Recently, as the production of biodiesel increased dramatically, the by-product glycerol increased, too. For the production of 10 kg of biodiesel, 1 kg of glycerol is produced. The glycerol obtained from biodiesel industry is much higher than the traditional demand, led to a substantial decline in the price of glycerol. Therefore, the conversion of glycerol into other substances is a critical problem for the development of biodiesel. Xanthan gum is commercially available in foods, pharmaceutical formulations, cosmetics, drilling fluids and other industries. But commercially available xanthan gum is relatively expensive due to glucose or sucrose being used as the sole carbon source. Therefore, if glycerol is used as the carbon source for fermentative production of xanthan gum, the production cost of xanthan gum will be significantly reduced. The aim of this work is to produce xanthan gum by fed-batch culture of Xanthomonas sp. YT-24, using glycerol as the substrate. The fermentation conditions are : 28 ± 2℃, 2 vvm, 500 rpm and 120 h. The maximal yield was 17.1 grams (dry weight) per liter of culture broth, with an maximum viscosity of 24.9×103 cP. This is higher than the similar fermentation by X. campestris BCRC 12354. The results showed when xanthan gum fermentation used glycerol as the substrate, Xanthomonas sp. YT-24 was more effective than X. campestris BCRC 12354 .

In one way, this study takes the approaches of history, sociology, anthropology, business model, social work and public policy, and in the other, this also probes the fields of psychology, geography, body techniques, health concepts, sports science and public health. In between, the origin and interaction among the weightlifting community, the dance community, the yoga community, and the martial arts community are discussed. Issues like gender, culture, communitarianism, lifestyle and the sociology of sports are taken into consideration as well. Regarding research methods, the structural hermeneutics and sequence analysis advocated by German sociologist Ulrich Oevermann are adopted in addition to domestic and foreign literature review. With performing arts entering curriculum guidelines, the revision of National Sports Act, and the passage of Culture Basic Law, physical education policy and cultural policy have drawn more attention; hopefully, subsequent researches can yield more concrete achievements in theory building, resource allocation, and the interdisciplinary evaluation of related policies, including social policy and economic policy.

Abstract:
Nowadays, the biggest challenge in tissue engineering consists in developing structures and in the application of strategies to emulate the anatomical and cellular complexity and vascularization of native tissues to maintain cell viability and functionality. The presence of functional blood vessel networks is essential to ensure adequate nutrient flow and oxygen diffusion throughout the support structure, two key requirements for maintaining cell viability. This work aimed to develop a complex in vitro model that mimics the native vascular network. To this end, a multilayered membrane made of six bilayers of chitosan (CHI)/alginate (ALG) or CHI/ALG-RGD (tripeptide of Arginine (R)-Glycine (G)- Aspartic acid (D) responsible for the cellular adhesion to the extracellular matrix (ECM)) were produced via Layer-by-Layer (LbL) assembly technology on the ALG printed structures. The ALG structures coated with the multilayered membranes were embedded in xanthan gum, chemically modified with methacrylated groups in order to obtain a mechanically robust hydrogel structure after photocrosslinking by UV light exposure. The liquification of the ALG printed structures, coated with the CHI/ALG, CHI/ALG-RGD or without the multilayers membranes, with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), led to the formation of microchannels in which human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were cultured for 24 hours. The obtained results demonstrate that the microchannels encompassing CHI/ALG-RGD multilayered membranes contributed to a larger cellular adhesion, demonstrating their potential to be applied in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine strategies.

Nowadays, the development of the mobile technology significantly improves the way information can be provided. The technological evolution of different devices provides more space for data storage, allows the introduction of different formats and of different types of communication (WiFi, Infra-red, GPS). The improvement of the capability to store and release a variety of contents, opens new perspectives to the creation of useful applications to meet the daily needs. This project intends to develop a mobile system that can provide information about exhibitions present in a cultural space and which can be accessed and consulted both inside and outside that space. It consists of an application built with Flash Lite software that allows the introduction of audio and video files containing explanations about the objects that are being exhibited, produced by the curator of the space, or by the artist himself. In addition to these formats it is also possible to provide a textual outline of the objects or a detailed biography of the artist, according to the interests of the visitor. This application was developed in order to be used in personal phones, thus facilitating both the access to the contents and its distribution, because it relieves the exhibitor from the necessity of acquiring any hardware for guided tours. In order to plan and produce a fully functional prototype that meets such specificities, a careful gathering of information was done, by researching similar products and their functionalities. It was also necessary to understand how the communication between visitor and exhibitor entity is achieved, as well as to gain a perception of the state of the art in what concerns the use of mobile systems as a means of information.

Abstract:
The French debate over genetically modified organisms (GMOs) is more than a controversy about genetic science. It is also a conflict between two ways of seeing the world. In the French debate, there is a collision between two competing rationalities, one instrumental, the other, ‘socioethical’. When defined according to an instrumental rationality, actors tend to assess GMOs in terms of environmental and health risk. When defined according to a socioethical rationality, actors evaluate GMOs in relation to issues such as food quality or globalization. While scientists are the primary spokespeople for the instrumental rationality of risk, small paysan farmers are the main spokespeople for the socioethical rationality, invoking forms of cultural expertise to speak critically about GMOs. Drawing from ethnographic data collected in France during 1997–2000, historical sources, and contemporary theory including Foucault and Latour, this dissertation explores the success of paysan farmers such as José Bové from the Confédération Paysanne in shifting the site of discursive authority from scientists to farmers, turning an instrumental debate about ‘science’ into a broader debate about ‘the commodification of life’ and cultural identity in an age of globalization. This transformation of the French GMO debate, however, is implicit. Actors promoting particular rationalities of science and society may be unaware that they are doing so—and thus may be unaware of the broader implications for debates about technoscience. Nevertheless, the Confédération Paysanne's discursive maneuvers have broadened understandings of what may count as expertise for technoscience practice and policy making in the future.

Scheffer, Bianca. "Zwartkoppies farm complex : exploiting a redundant cultural landscape for social, ecological and economical development." Diss., 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/32808.

Full text
Abstract:
The cultural landscape has long been the indigenous language of man and the original inhabitancy of all living things. Humans evolved amongst animals, under the sky, upon the earth and near water resources. We have touched, saw, heard, smelled, tasted, lived in, and shaped the landscape before the spaces had words to describe what it did. Inhabited landscapes were the first human texts, read before the invention of other signs and symbols. This legacy of ‘native identity’ and cultural process makes a connection in each one, physically and mentally. Landscape thus provides the social milieu of our lives and even though we consist of multi-layered knowledge of the ethnographic landscape which is dependent on personal background, traditions, education and character, we should be collectively and individually aware of changes in our cultural landscape and or heritage (Swaffield 2005: 17). The following dissertation attempts to present an approach that might inform landscape design strategies or principles as a basis to the reclamation and/or conservation of redundant cultural heritage places. Along with theory, this paper will also investigate precedential studies to gain knowledge on how to efficiently redevelop a cultural landscape. Key Words: Cultural landscape, heritage, landscape design, reclamation, conservation

Hughes, Clare Margaret. "Reviving the Capitol, contemporary cultural production in left-over spaces." Diss., 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/32817.

Full text
Abstract:
The city of Pretoria can be likened to a blanket stretched thin, where previously urban programs shift to the expanding periphery leaving gaps in the city fabric. It is essential to investigate ways in which these urban “left overs” can be re-imagined within the contemporary context. This complex urban condition is investigated with the focus on conservation of abandoned buildings of heritage significance. In South Africa, state funding cannot be relied upon for conservation of individual buildings. Thus the conservation of leftover and abandoned heritage buildings should happen not through singular museum projects but through the everyday usefulness of the building. The role of art and the artist has long been linked to the reuse of buildings which have become difficult to inhabit in conventional ways. Thus the introduction of cultural programs to derelict heritage sites and “left over” spaces is pertinent to their reuse. One such site is the Capitol theatre in the Pretoria CBD. It is undoubtedly a place of cultural richness and expression, having been a place of daily gathering as well as formal entertainment throughout its history. It is a natural point in which to reintroduce culture into an extended public realm at the heart of the city. Originally a space of introverted and exclusive cultural expression, curated cultural artifacts (films and occasional shows) were displayed to a limited audience in a highly internalised experience. However, it is proposed that this condition be inverted through external display of the processes of cultural production on the exterior of the theatre. The intention is to broaden the sphere of cultural influence into the public realm of the city and simultaneously invite the existing communities to engage with the building. Thus the focus shifts from internal event space to external production space which becomes part of the public everyday experience. Reviving the Capitol The Capitol Theatre complex was never completed and no exterior facade was ever design for the auditorium. This creates the opportunity for a new inhabitable facade to be designed which fulfills the role of both a supportive and expressive element. The new element incorporates spaces where people and processes of cultural production are expressed externally while curated cultural artifacts and events remain housed in the auditorium. Ultimately the concept is one of support. The physical support of a failing structure being the starting point which necessitates an intervention; the functional support which allows the building to become useful again in a contemporary context with new cultural meaning; and the social support of the everyday rituals which make up the daily cultural experiences through the extension of the sphere of cultural influence of the Capitol Theatre.

De, Klerk Sunica. "An Exploration of Office Design: Understanding the character of our workplaces." Diss., 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/32806.

Full text
Abstract:
The workplace environment is intrinsically dynamic, yet architecturally it is treated as something that is fixed. Functional layouts specific to the thinking of the time (zeitgeist) are built into the structure leaving little opportunity for adaptation. Frank Lloyd Wright’s Johnson Wax building is one such example; built to function in the Taylorist paradigm with little scope for alteration. The contemporary workplace often lends itself to the adaptive reuse of a range of building typologies or the construction of new structures with Green Star ratings. At the same time, a significant amount of office buildings, constructed prior to the green building movement of the 1990’s, are still in use, despite the typically hermetic and unhealthy spaces they contain. The possibility of adapting an office building from pre-1990 building stock is investigated. Previous workplace layouts inhibited conversation (since interaction in the workplace was frowned upon), but today workplaces are designed with social interaction as its core. The largely unused potential of this aspect within corporate culture and the influence it might have on spatial organisations is investigated. Interior architecture, as mediator between office buildings’ accommodation and their dynamic programs, forms the premise of the study. The hypothesis that an interior architectural intervention can make a positive translation from an unhealthy to a healthy building is tested by designing for the interplay between the character of a space and its design elements. The design process is guided by the Open Building methodology of fixed, semi-fixed and loose-fit. The intervention translates this methodology into a responsive and context conscious proposal with an emphasis on the users and their sense of place. Finally, traditional architectural elements are reinterpreted in terms of their ability to enable or disable interaction between users according to the theory of social friction. Three types of interaction are considered: official meetings, casual meetings and chance encounters. Human interaction, central to the creation of a workplace as opposed to a work space, is a constant theme throughout the study.

Paterson, Avril Roderick. "Le Morne world heritage site - interpretation centre." Diss., 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/32812.

Full text
Abstract:
Through the passing of time we gain perspective of the past and thus we gain knowledge. Through the interpretation of this knowledge we can inform and evaluate our visions of and goals for the future. ‘Our knowledge of time lies in the very heart of our humanity. We learn from the past, we pass on that wisdom to the future, that has been the bedrock of our civilisation’ (OXLEY, P., & KAKU, M.,2007). This knowledge, also known as our cultural heritage, can take numerous forms such as literature, art, architecture, traditional dances, festivals, folk tales, cuisine, etc. Our cultural heritage is to be preserved for posterity and ‘should be protected and made publicly available, subject to requirements of security and privacy, and where this is culturally appropriate’ (Burra Charter,1999:Article 32). The phenomenon of slavery forms part of the cultural heritage of the world, Mauritius and specifically the Le Morne peninsula. Following the area’s inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a need arose for an Interpretation Centre to provide more information on the culturally significant area’s history. For the design of this facility, this thesis study proposes an experiment in interaction of space and emotion, where the container interacts with the user and induces sensations associated with the artefacts, taking the form of multi-media exhibitions, therefore using a variety of tools to induce a holistic, subjective and objective learning experience. Through this proposal the cultural heritage is to be interpreted and displayed to inform contemporary concepts and visions of the future amongst locals and tourists alike.

Tumor vaccines derived from genetically modified tumor cells or from tumor antigen-pulsed dendritic cells (DCs) show promise in cancer immunotherapy. DCs can be generated from bone marrow-derived cells and splenocytes in the presence of GM-CSF and IL-4. DCs would mature into functional tumor antigen-presenting cells under the exposure to tumor cells or tumor extracts. In this study, the strategies based on DCs combined with genetically engineered tumor cells expressing GM-CSF and IL-4 were exploited to test the feasibility of generation of mature DCs in vitro for tumor immunotherapy. Murine GM-CSF and/or IL-4 cDNA were each cloned into recombinant retroviral vectors (pRufCD), which combine the expression of a suicide gene, E. coli cytosine deaminase (CD), for drug selection. These retroviral vectors were transfected into MBT-2 (murine bladder tumor cell line) and LL2 (murine lewis lung carcinoma cell line). The GM-CSF and IL-4 genes were integrated into the chromosomal DNA of MBT-2 and LL2 cells as confirmed by PCR. The expressions of these two cytokines were also verified by RT-PCR. Furthermore, the GM-CSF protein was detectable in the supernatants of GM-CSF-transfected tumor cells. When splenocytes from naive mice were cultured with MBT-2 cells transduced with GM-CSF gene and those transduced with IL-4 gene, matured DCs were generated, which were characterized for expression of MHC class II antigen, CD11c and CD86. The matured DCs can induce T-cell maturation as well as generate more matured DCs when cocultured with naive splenocytes. We will exploit this DC-based strategy for tumor immunotherapy.

Von, Geyso Carlheinz Christoph. "Barren praise : an apiary as a placemaking interface in the post-industrial context." Diss., 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/32803.

Full text
Abstract:
The relation between industrial enclosures and their environments change in the post-industrial state, which causes a loss of orientation and identification of place. While the inherent character of such a place does not become thinned, it does however become encased in the remnants of industrial activity. The re-assessment, activation and interpretations of the transitions between industrial enclosures and their environments intend to bring the character of a place forward, and therefore emerges its seemingly vague placeness. The project proposal is situated on the periphery between the industrial and altered natural environment of Era Bricks, a dilapidated quarry which borders on industrial Silverton and Eersterust. The architectural intervention grapples with the transitions between the site’s dynamic environmental transformations and the static physicality of its structures. This exploration is manifested as an apiary and beekeeping facility, a formalised industry which cannot be fully contained. Translated into architecture, the dissertation suggests that beekeeping brings forward and reflects the ungraspable and imposing essence of the post-industrial terrain. Through the layered transitions of this programme, the terrain is aimed at becoming activated in its inherent sense of place.

Otieno, Odhiambo Luther. "The relationship between capital structure, performance and replacement of CEO in firms listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange." Thesis, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/18746.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigated the relationship between capital structure, performance and replacement of chief executive officer in firms listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE). Data was collected from a sample of 37 firms listed on the NSE over a period of 23 years, from 1990 to 2012. The analysis was conducted at three stages. The canonical correlation technique was employed to investigate the bi-directional relationship between capital structure and performance and to select competing indicators of performance and capital structure. Second, the general linear model (GLM) procedure was used to test the effect of performance and ownership structure and to test the effect of capital structure and ownership structure. Lastly, the generalised estimating equation (GEE) was used to assess effects of performance, capital structure and ownership structure on change in CEO. The results revealed that a bidirectional relationship exists between capital structure and debt capital. The indicators found to be useful in examining the relationship between performance and capital structure are asset turnover ratio and total debt to the total asset ratio. The findings support the efficiency hypothesis but not the franchise hypothesis. The results also indicated that firms with a low asset turnover are with a low asset turnover are 3.045 times likely to change CEO compared to firms with a high asset turnover. The results also indicated that firms with high leverage (debt) are he results also indicated that firms with high leverage (debt) are 3.430 times likely to change CEO compared to firms in low leverage, while the firms with medium leverage are are are are 6.491 times likely to change CEO. Therefore managers should not be passive when it comes to choosing between equity and debt capital played a disciplinary role on firms listed on the NSE.
