Abstract:
As the gymnasiums in subtropical region with hot and humid climate are naturally ventilated during non-competition periods, occupants exercising indoors often feel uncomfortable, especially in summer. In order to provide thermally comfortable and healthy environment for the occupants, the design on architectural form is found to be an effective solution on improving indoor thermal comfort of naturally ventilated gymnasiums. Therefore, a new perspective regarding optimization of naturally ventilated gymnasiums is proposed in the aspect of the architectural form. This paper presents the optimization of architectural form in naturally ventilated gymnasiums in which simulation and orthogonal experiment methods are combined. Through numerical simulation with FlowDesigner software, the significance of architectural form affecting indoor thermal comfort has been given, and the optimal architectural forms of naturally ventilated gymnasium are determined. The results show that the roof insulation type is the most significant factor influencing indoor thermal comfort; thus, it should be considered primarily in optimization. Moreover, the range analysis and variance analysis reveal the rankings of the factors for the gymnasium thermal comfort. In addition, it is demonstrated that the optimal gymnasium model, when compared with the initial gymnasium model, has a satisfactory effect on improving the indoor thermal comfort, as the average value of Predicted Thermal Sensation (PTS) in August decreased from 1.11 (Slightly hot) to 0.86 (Comfortable). This study provides a new insight for the designers in optimizing the architectural form of gymnasiums for achieving the indoor thermal comfort at hot and humid climate.

Abstract:
The article analyzes the role of women’s gymnasiums in the city of Chita in public education system of the Trans-Baikal Region of the late 19th – early 20th centuries, based on documents from the State Archives of the Trans-Baikal Territory and the Irkutsk Region. The author considers the main aspects of the activities of educational institutions: the problems of the creation and existence of female gymnasiums, the organization and content of the educational process, the material base, and also pays attention to the issue of training teachers for secondary educational institutions. The analysis of the level of knowledge of the topic, the content of archival funds is carried out. The research methodology is based on the application of the method of functional analysis, historical-genetic and historical-comparative methods. The source base of the study is presented by the reporting documentation of the gymnasiums, including design and estimate, for different years of their existence, correspondence of superiors with higher officials on the organization of the educational process and others. The article is illustrated with a large volume of photographic materials – photographs of the commanding persons, students and educational buildings of the indicated educational institutions. However, in spite of a sufficient number of archival documents, the researchers did not submit extensive work on the activities of women’s gymnasiums in the Trans-Baikal region. At the end of the article, the author provides an assessment of the activities of the Chita women’s gymnasiums. The study is timed to celebrate two anniversaries: the 115th anniversary of the opening of the Second Women’s Gymnasium (1906) and the 110th anniversary of the Private Women’s Gymnasium of O. M. Tsinbal-Miklashevskaya (1911).

Abstract:
Background: Nutritional supplements refer to a product ingested to increase the nutritional content of a normal diet, to fill a dietary need and/or presumed deficiency. The usage and popularity of nutritional supplements, however, raises concerns from a health benefit and risk perspective. In South Africa, there is currently no adequate regulatory framework of enforcement for nutritional supplement products and undeclared constituents by the statutory body, the Medicines Control Council (MCC). Education awareness programmes by organisations that should take consumer protection and the general public health and wellness as a right, needs to be improved. Objectives: To investigate the attitudes toward nutritional supplements by adult gym users from commercial gymnasiums in the Johannesburg North region of South Africa. Methods: A cross-sectional quantitative design, using a selfadministered questionnaire was applied to 364 recruited study participants who attended commercial gymnasiums in Johannesburg North. Results: One hundred and fifty users (41%) claimed that they ‘always’ read the information about the nutritional values, benefits, and side effects of the supplements on the labels prior to use. Three hundred and three users (83%) indicated that the number of users of nutritional supplements in gymnasiums is on the increase. Two hundred and seventy-three (75%) of main information sources for nutritional supplements may be found on the internet, while 292 (80%) indicated the need for gymnasiums to provide educational programmes pertaining to nutritional supplement consumption. Conclusion: Gymnasium users are aware of the increase in nutritional supplement use in commercial gymnasiums. Many of the users were unaware of the potential mislabelling and health concerns regarding these supplements. Therefore there is a need for improved nutritional supplement education programmes and diligence at multiple levels.

Abstract:
Modernization, which consisted in the transition from feudalism to capitalism in post-reform Russia, had a significant impact on education. Due to the fact that the Russian Empire was a classic world economy with a large city at its center, it varied in the development of different territories. In the Tomsk Province, as well as in the center of the country, there was a large city — Tomsk, and smaller cities in the same way included the surrounding territories in their sphere of economic and socio-cultural influence. In order to replenish the staff, pedagogical classes were organized in gymnasiums. They were of particular relevance for Siberia, where there was only one university at the beginning of the 20th century. Detailed sources remained on the pedagogical class of the Barnaul First Women's Gymnasium. In this regard, it is relevant to study this topic on the materials of this gymnasium. The preserved protocols of the trial lessons contain information about the requirements for teachers and students in pedagogical class. The experience of prerevolutionary gymnasiums can be useful in our time.

Abstract:
A long-span sports centre generally comprises multiple stadiums and gymnasiums, for which mutual interference effects of wind-induced snow motion are not explicitly included in the specifications of various countries. This problem is addressed herein by performing wind tunnel tests and numerical simulations to investigate the snow distribution and mutual interference effect on the roofs of long-span stadiums and gymnasiums. The wind tunnel tests were used to analyse the influences of the opening direction (0°, 90°, 180°, and 270°) and spacing (0.3 L, 0.5 L, 1 L, 1.5 L, 2 L, and 2.5 L, where L is the gymnasium span) of the stadium and gymnasium. The wind tunnel tests and numerical simulations were used to analyse the influence of the wind direction angle (from 0° to 315°, there are a total of eight groups in 45° intervals). The following results were obtained. The stadium opening had a significant effect on the snow distribution on the surface of the two structures. An even snow distribution was obtained when the stadium opened directly facing the gymnasium, which corresponded to the safest condition for the structures’ surfaces. As the spacing between the buildings increased, the interference effect between the two structures was reduced. The interference was negligible for a spacing of 2 L. The stadium had the most significant amplification interference effect on the gymnasium for a wind direction angle of 45°, which was extremely unfavourable to the safety of the structure. The most favourable wind direction angle was 270°, where there were both amplification interference and blockage interference.

Jones, Steven LaVoe. "Mercury Emissions from Polyurethane Flooring in Gymnasiums." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/42755.

Full text
Abstract:
From the 1960s to the 1980s, many schools throughout the country installed synthetic flooring in indoor gymnasiums that contained mercury which was used as a catalyst in the polyurethane formulation. Many of these floors now have been found to be releasing mercury vapors into the school gymnasiums, leading to a concern that these mercury concentrations might be elevated enough to cause harmful effects. This paper examines data that have been collected from 57 different school gymnasiums using portable devices, such as the Lumex RA-915+ Portable Mercury Vapor Analyzer, and aggregated for analyses, then compares this data to that obtained in chamber tests performed on samples obtained directly from a gymnasium with mercury-containing floors. The overall objective of this paper is to determine if the chamber tests can adequately emulate mercury emissions in school gymnasiums, and using the results of the laboratory experiments, successfully analyze the emissions curve to determine what factors drive the profile. The laboratory testing was successful in emulating the condition of a school gymnasium, as data collected from the laboratory setting was comparable to the measured field data. The average mercury concentration in the gymnasium yielded an emission rate 3.1E-05 ug/m2s, while the calculated laboratory emission rate was 3.2E-05 ug/m2s, a negligible difference. The overall objective was met, as it was determined that floor samples taken from a gymnasium could be measured in the laboratory with similar results to those screened in the actual gym with handheld devices. Additionally, using the data collected in the chamber experiments, the emissions profile was characterized.

Abstract: The outdoor gyms (AAL's), a set of equipment for functional training, have emerged as a way to encourage the development of outdoor activities. These kind of contemporary urban furniture are located in open spaces (streets, squares, parks), whether public or private. The use of this equipment is directly related to the quality of the physical environment in which they are inserted, however, studies that address the quality of this new modality are still very recent and little explored. In order to contribute to this issue, the objective of the research was to create a method to assess the quality of the physical environment of outdoor gyms (AAL's) from the definition of themes and evaluation indicators. Through the analysis of the bibliographic review it was possible to highlight the themes "accessibility, comfort, use and activities and sociability", the indicators of each and the following categories of evaluation: Base - surface where AAL equipment is installed; Border area - public space for the insertion of AAL's and surroundings - urban space around the border surface. Thus, the proposed methodology was divided into three phases: Phase 1 - Definition of themes and indicators for evaluation of AALs; Phase 2 - Development of an AAL's evaluation index; Phase 3 - Validation of the methodology. The validation of the methodology in 24 AAL's in the city of Bauru - SP, Brazil, evidenced the main aspects that favor and compromise the quality of each one within the themes and cat... Abstract:
Middle school students are physically and psychologically different from adults. They are in a relatively special and rapidly changing phase. As the most penetrating level of environmental perception, visual perception directly affects the use of the space in middle school gymnasiums. Based on the human factors engineering problem of teenagers using campus gymnasiums to carry out sports activities, this study takes visual perception as the starting point and adopts the method of combining research and experiment. Through semi-structured interviews and grading questionnaires, the strong factors related to middle school students’ willingness to exercise and architectural space design were refined. A seven-differentiation evaluation scale was constructed by SD method, and a questionnaire survey was conducted on 1150 middle school students. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed on the statistical data, and multiple groups were compared by age group and gender, and thus corresponding design strategies were proposed. The paper aims at promoting the enthusiasm of youth sports development, and providing theoretical support for the construction and development of middle school gymnasiums.

Abstract:
Formal education is one of the most influential predictors of professional success. As parents in Germany are aware of the importance of education, they often try to enable their children to enrol in the prestigious academic schooling track (Gymnasium). This explains why the transition recommendation made by the teacher after the fourth grade is sometimes ignored if the desired track was not recommended for a particular student. How the mismatch between the teacher’s recommendation and the parents’ choice of schooling for their child affects the child’s development is not sufficiently known. It is very likely that such a mismatch can have consequences for the child’s well-being, competences and overall academic success. Based on five consecutive panel waves of German National Educational Panel Study (NEPS) data (waves 1 to 5, collected between 2010 and 2016) (n = 2;790 in wave 1), our analyses demonstrate that social background and the probability of ignoring a teacher’s recommendation are associated, and that highly educated parents are more likely to overrule the teacher’s recommendation. Panel regression models show that pupils who pursued the academic track (Gymnasium) despite the absence of a teacher’s recommendation were more likely to drop out of the academic schooling track, and were not able to catch up with their peers with respect to both objective and subjective academic competences over the entire observation window. However, the models also show that academic track mismatch did not seem to negatively influence the health and well-being of these pupils.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Rosendal Jensen,, Niels, Malene Engsig Brodersen, and Naya Hansen. Evalueringsrapport. Steiner HF. Aarhus Universitet, DPU, November 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.7146/aul.498.
