Abstract:

Richardson, Emma V. "Resisting disablism in the gym : a narrative exploration of the journey from disabled client to disabled instructor." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2017. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/26422.

Full text
Abstract:
It is imperative that individuals with physical impairments maintain an active lifestyle to enhance various aspects of well-being and overall quality of life. This population, however, are also one of the most sedentary in society. One identified reason for this is the ableism which exists in many fitness establishments that promotes acceptance of one particular body; the strong, physically athletic, muscular body is given value. Individuals who do not align to his particular physical reality may be subject to discrimination which can have a detrimental effect on their psycho-emotional well-being and deter them from exercising. Surprisingly, there is an increasing number of disabled individuals who are becoming gym instructors and further integrating themselves into a space which is deemed to oppress them. The purpose of this PhD is to explore these individuals' journey from gym clients to gym instructors. Framed by interpretivism and with particular focus on narrative inquiry, various qualitative analysis techniques were applied to explore 1) participants experiences exercising in the gym, 2) participants' motivations to be gym instructors, 3) how participants made sense of their gym instructor training and, 4)what impact participants perceived they had in the gym as instructors. This thesis has made original contributions to the literature by crafting a deep understanding of disabled people s experiences in the gym and why people enact social missions. For example, this thesis contextualizes disability in the gym and identifies that despite the numerous health benefits disabled people experience by exercising in this space, the psycho-emotional disablism they are subject to acts as a barrier for individuals to exercise here. Importantly, although disablism acted as a barrier to continued exercise for participants, it was also a facilitator in their decision to become a gym instructor. Essentially, participants described their own negative gym experiences as fuelling their desires to enact positive change in this space and do social missions in the gym. To be a gym instructor, participants went through a training programme specifically designed to train disabled people to embody this role. At this training, participants initially experienced a sense of validation and belonging through peer group exercise and were able to craft a collective story which allowed them to resist the oppressive disablism they experienced in the gym. However, as training continued and evolved so too did the narratives participants crafted to make sense of their experiences. Instead of one united story, participants crafted two conflicting narratives which redefined their relationship with each other and InstructAbility, and ultimately determined why some participants continued their training and others did not. For those who did continue to become fully qualified gym instructors, they felt they had a positive influence in promoting inclusion, exercise and diversity in the gym. In light of these findings, there are several practical recommendations for exercise practitioners, rehabilitation specialists, gym managers and those prescribing exercise to disabled people. Implications are aimed at improving exercise promotion and experiences of exercise in the gym for disabled people. For example, disabled gym instructors could be a way to bridge the perceived experiential gap between disability and the gym as they exhibit an alternate way of being which is accepted in this space. Through their experiential knowledge of disability and practical knowledge of exercise, these individuals can also relate to disabled clients in a way that non-disabled instructors cannot. Disabled gym instructors, however, can educate non-disabled gym instructors in how to train someone with an impairment. Equally, a more critical attitude to promoting exercise to disabled people is called for. Specifically, to steer away from disabling expectations and narratives of disabled people s motivations to exercise and move towards more realistic, enabling strategies and narratives to facilitate disabled peoples exercise behaviour.

Doğan, Ceren. "The 'subject-effects' of gyms : studying the interactional, sociospatial and performative order of the fitness site." Thesis, Birkbeck (University of London), 2015. http://bbktheses.da.ulcc.ac.uk/151/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the ‘subject-effects’ of fitness gyms by investigating how the gym’s interactional, sociospatial and performative order informs participants’ sense of self and the ways in which they relate to their bodies. The thesis engages predominantly with the following theories: Foucault’s concept of heterotopia, Goffman’s theorization of total institutions and Scott’s elaboration of it as well as Bourdieu’s notion of habitus. Adopting a psychosocial framework, it is argued that these theories are more productive for the present study when their scope is widened to the level of subjective experiences, affects and relationships. A variety of methods were utilized in this study: a multi-sited participant observation in three London gyms including a small-scale analysis of gym advertisements, thirty-two semi-structured interviews with gym participants, and an analysis of online blogs and fitness handbooks. Four interrelated subject-effects of the gym were identified: first, material practices employed at gyms are tied into discourses of effectiveness and productivity through which bodies are conceptualized as open to strategic manipulation, control and power. On an affective level, this may generate feelings of mastery but also anxiety and discomfort amongst gym users. Second, gyms promote the idea that training brings about happiness, selfsatisfaction and emotional resilience. These ideas are taken up by most participants who state that they gain a greater sense of control through their gym training and feel self-contented. Third, gyms afford their users with a sense of individuality which lets them feel ‘special’. However, whilst there is a constant emphasis on members’ uniqueness in terms of their own, distinctive body and its ‘needs’, there is also the impetus to compare, contrast, to look and to be like the others which produces subtle forms of rivalry. Four, belonging to a gym expresses and affirms participants’ sense of self in a way that harmonizes with neoliberal imperatives on the self as an enterprise. The gym invites participants to be selfresponsible, self-reliant and constantly becoming.

Abstract:
Sports supplements include nutritional supplements and ergogenic aids and are widely used in the gym culture. Previous research has examined predictors for supplement use, but lacks an insight into why these patterns appear. The objective was to examine predictors for sports supplement use among people exercising at gyms and explore how sports supplements are used, perceived and viewed upon among a group of regular gym users. A mixed methods explanatory sequential design was used. In phase 1, an online cross-sectional survey was conducted. Phase 2 consisted of six semi-structured interviews exploring why sports supplements are used and not used, as well as expectations and beliefs regarding sports supplements among training individuals. 85 individuals participated in the survey. 68 percent used sports supplements regularly, but no predictors from previous research could be confirmed. The interviews showed that supplements were used for convenience and to ensure a sufficient nutrition intake, while non-users expressed a lack of knowledge and believed supplements to be inefficient and unnecessary. No predictors for use of sports supplements were confirmed, but both users and non-users highly value health responsibility in their decision of supplement use. To users, sports supplements are efficient and convenient dietary complements and replacements. Non-supplement users regard sports supplements to be unnecessary, inefficient and less enjoyable than food. Due to the small sample size, more studies are needed within the field in order to fully understand the role of sports supplements in the target group.
85 individer deltog i enkäten.

Abstract:
Researches about motivation with individuals from different ages in a variety of sportive contexts, has got distinction in literature related to sport, especially in the one related to sport psychology. The purpose of this study is to explore and evaluate different motivational dimensions associated to regular physical activities practice in gym users in the city of Porto Alegre. Six motivational dimensions associated to the regular practice of physical activities were observed: stress control, health, sociability, competitive, esthetics and pleasure. More specifically, this study pretended to verify significant statistical differences (p< 0,05) between the motivational rates from the six dimensions and controlled variables: “gender”, “group age”, “training”, “practice time”, “frequency time” and “modality”. The IMPRAF-126 (Balbinotti, 2003) was answered by 300 gymnastics users, from Porto Alegre gyms, of both genders and ages between 18 and 65 years old. The research established that the dimension that mainly motivated them is health followed, respectively, by pleasure, esthetics, stress control, sociability and competitive. The results are explained when identifying the motivational factor health related with the improvement of physical capacity, increasing vitality, decreasing risk factors to diseases and quality life gain. It is perceived that the higher was the age of participants, the higher was the value related to health. The results of this study suggest that the participants’ motivation begins, predominantly, from their extrinsic motivation. Additional studies are important in order to acknowledge better the motivational dimensions in different users according to their regular physical activities.

Abstract:
This study examined relationships among self-esteem, media internalization, sexual orientation, and ethnicity in predicting drive for muscularity in a diverse group of men (N = 217) who work out in gyms. Investigations examined media internalization and sexual orientation as moderators of the relationship between self-esteem and drive for muscularity. Additional analyses examined media internalization as a moderator of the relationships between a) sexual orientation and drive for muscularity and b) ethnicity and drive for muscularity. Standardized questionnaires were utilized to assess drive for muscularity, media internalization, self-esteem, sexual orientation, and ethnicity. While lower self-esteem predicted greater drive for muscularity, neither media internalization nor sexual orientation were significant moderators of this relationship. However, media internalization mediated the relationships between sexual orientation and drive for muscularity and between ethnicity and drive for muscularity. Findings suggest that the internalization of ideal muscularized images explain demographic differences in the drive to be more muscular.

Abstract:
The present project consists of the implementation of the project on the rental of gym equipment in good condition through a web platform. Due to the current situation, several companies dedicated to providing the gym service through their premises had to close by order of the Peruvian government to mitigate the risk of contagion by COVID-19 and later only opening was allowed with the capacity of only 30 % which generated significant economic losses. Likewise, the people who attended these places stopped doing so for fear of contagion or because they could not attend because there were no hours available, and they were forced to do physical activity at home in a rustic way or by buying gym equipment so as not to lose the routine. For this reason, this project was proposed to solve this problem, which consists of offering a web platform so that people who have gym machines can register on the web platform where the status of their gym machines will be evaluated, and they can rent their equipment to people who require specific gym equipment that allows them to perform physical activity at home.

The search for a model of lean and muscular body, seen as fit, is a contemporary phenomenon. On the one hand, the body is the object of care and construction of meanings in today's society. On the other hand, the Christian religion has traditionally handled the body under the sign of distrust, as it is the object of sin and perdition. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between body and religion in our days, considering the centrality of the body. It was attempted to show how the change of body importance reflected on the relationship between body and religion, as well as to what extent this has happened. The research was done based on the perception of regular gym-goers. It was investigated how these individuals related the fit body to the religious body, and whether the body has taken a greater religious significance in our society. We believe there are other frontiers between the Christian understanding of the body and the perception of the body among the new contemporary subjectivities. In addition, if there is a search for a fit body, we can also speak of a religious body in shape.

Abstract:
While physical activity has many important benefits on our health and well-being, many people find it hard to establish and maintain long-lasting exercise routines. Technology can be an effective tool to combat this issue by increasing users’ motivation to exercise and encouraging them to make healthier choices. In this qualitative study, we explored the persuasive effect and potential of an online booking system (OBS) implemented in a gym in the South West of United Kingdom to limit the amount of people in the facilities during the Covid-19 pandemic. The purpose of our research was to examine gym members’ experiences of the system, how it had impacted their motivation to exercise, and to explore how their experiences could be used in a digital system aiming to promote regular gym-use and long-lasting exercise routines. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews, carried out with five gym members. The results demonstrate that all informants had ambivalent feelings towards the OBS, with both positive and negative attitudes towards the system. Three key findings were identified. First, the system forced the users to adapt their exercise routines and daily activities in general to its new constraints which, in some instances, reduced their motivation to exercise. Second, the activity of booking and scheduling gym sessions gave the users a sense of commitment and determination, which increased their motivation to adhere to their planned exercise regime. Third, the users experienced the increased familiarity in the gym as a positive outcome of the OBS. Based on the empirical findings, we proposed a set of recommended features and three key components which can be beneficial to include in a digital system aiming to increase gym user’s motivation to exercise, and that could come of use to designers developing interactive systems for gym settings.

Abstract:
The implementation of the online Service in Gymnasiums / health clubs: Customer ABSTRACT: A public health problem, characterized by the transmission of the SarS-Cov-2 virus (Covid-19), has caused a worldwide pandemic. Several measures have been adopted to contain the spread, one of which is the confinement, which as a result, has considerably increased the use of distance communication tools in various areas of activity. The physical activity and leisure sector was one of those that sought to adapt to the circumstances, focusing on online services. The aim of this study was to discover the potential of online services in gyms and health clubs, characterizing the profile of potential customers and customers who enjoy this type of service, evidencing their motivations to adhere to it and its usefulness. An anonymous questionnaire was applied to 358 individuals, divided into 2 groups, (Potential clients, N=202; clients, N=158). It was also analyzed the potential interest in acquiring the online service, through the characterization of the existing service and its usefulness. The results indicate that the main motivations of potential service clients are essentially intrinsic, related to the practical dimension (physical exercise), psychological and personal dimension. The variables “Physical assessment service"; "Exercise library"; "Personal Trainer Service"; “Nutrition consultations"; "description and training objective"; "Duration of training", "Exercise intensity levels"; "Training schedule", "daily activity reports", "inclusion of objectives"; "Password"; "Cloud" and "ATM" were considered the variables with the greatest potential for interest and usefulness. The analysis undertaken is relevant for managers and directors of gyms and health clubs, since it not only allows the development of more effective marketing plans, adapting the online service to different types of customers, but also increases the specialization of the service, the level of customer satisfaction and, consequently, loyalty rates.

Abstract:

It causes people to be prone to contracting chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, cancer, according to Alexandro Saco, director of Health Promotion of the Minsa. It should be noted that those who suffer from the aforementioned diseases are at risk by contracting covid-19. To the aforementioned, it is added that the constant exhalations due to effort during physical activity cause a more favorable environment for coronavirus infections within gyms. That is why the Peruvian Government was forced to close the gyms. However, in Peru, according to the latest IHRSA report (2019), there are 1,818 gyms and training centers, which are currently closed, affecting around 20,000 sports professionals. Based on this, “HEALTHY MIND” was born, a business idea from a group of students from the Peruvian University of Applied Sciences. This team analyzed the current situation and developed a service so that people can change their lifestyle from home and have no excuses for doing any physical activity. Abstract:
This final thesis is written by Jelena Todorovic, studying Product Design at Malmö Högskola. The purpose with this project was to develop a sport bag for people living nearby a gym and who showers at home instead of the gym after training. The main focus of the project is User Centered Design, which means that the product development of the concept is based on the end users, or the customer’s preferences, needs and wishes. The user is included in every step of the project development, such as commenting and criticizing sketches and concepts, being interviewed and observed, and evaluating the different stages of the concept and product. The student saw a need of a different bag than the traditional sport bag. The pilot study resulted in a list of requirements based on the target group and their needs and preferences. A gym bag with focus on the functionality became the project. The student wanted the project and the final concept to be environmentally friendly, why a research in that field was necessary. We need to think about our planet, and for a Designer, it is a challenge to develop a product which is environmentally friendly and sustainable. It is also desirable for a product to fill its function and last for a long time. Finally, the project resulted in a functionality model of the new gym bag.

Abstract:

Syfte och frågeställning

Studiens syfte:

Muscle Dysmorphia (M.D.)

Purpose and question

The purpose of this essay:

Muscle Dysmorphia (M.D.) is a syndrome with an incorrect body-opinion and low self-esteem.

The purpose of this essay is to study the prevalence of Muscle Dysmorphia among male weightlifters in two different sized cities.

The question of the essay is:

Are there any difference in occurrence of M.D. amongst men at the age 16–50 who workout in gyms in a big city (Stockholm) versus a medium sized town (Lidköping)?

Method

The purpose of our previous b-essay was to seek definition and criteria for the M.D. syndrome, and we used the Pubmed database as a source for our findings. These findings also act as a base for creating the questioner we used in our survey research in this study. The survey research was personally done by the authors on 240 men and took place at SATS Odenplan in Stockholm and at Lidköping’s three gyms. After data collection was completed, it was analyzed in Excel and a Chi2-test was done.

In order to create a high internal validity in our research, literature related to the subject and other similar research projects have become a foundation for planning of this essay.

Results/Discussion

The research shows that the prevalence of M.D. among weightlifting men between the ages of 16-50 years are more than four times likely in a medium sized city than in a big one. Lidköping have a prevalence of 6.36 % whereas Stockholm’s figure was much lower at 1,53 %. The result of this study is narrowed because the criteria of the Chi2-test were not completely fulfilled.

The reason for these results can depend on several different things, one might be the time aspect. In a smaller city more time is devoted to work out in gyms, witch can involve the persons to a special lifestyle and direction of work out. Individuals with the same interests for work out are gathering and pushing each other forward.

Abstract:
Recommender systems provide new opportunities for retrieving personalized information on the Internet. Due to the availability of big data, the fitness industries are now focusing on building an efficient recommender system for their end-users. This thesis investigates the possibilities of building an efficient recommender system for gym users. BRP Systems AB has provided the gym data for evaluation and it consists of approximately 896,000 customer interactions with 8 features. Four different matrix factorization methods, Latent semantic analysis using Singular value decomposition, Alternating least square, Bayesian personalized ranking, and Logistic matrix factorization that are based on implicit feedback are applied for the given data. These methods decompose the implicit data matrix of user-gym group activity interactions into the product of two lower-dimensional matrices. They are used to calculate the similarities between the user and activity interactions and based on the score, the top-k recommendations are provided. These methods are evaluated by the ranking metrics such as Precision@k, Mean average precision (MAP) @k, Area under the curve (AUC) score, and Normalized discounted cumulative gain (NDCG) @k. The qualitative analysis is also performed to evaluate the results of the recommendations. For this specific dataset, it is found that the optimal method is the Alternating least square method which achieved around 90\% AUC for the overall system and managed to give personalized recommendations to the users.

Abstract:
Over the last decade, three species of Gyps vultures on the Asian subcontinent have declined dramatically in population numbers, some as much as 97 to 99%. Although the initial cause was believed to be infectious, it was later shown to be due to an inadvertent exposure to diclofenac via the food chain. In order to protect the remaining wild vultures, diclofenac needed to be removed from the food chain. Unfortunately the Indian government was reluctant to ban diclofenac until an alternate veterinary non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that was both safe in vultures and effective in cattle could be identified. Although meloxicam was tentatively identified as this drug, toxicity testing still needed to be undertaken. Using a previously validated model, two studies were undertaken to determine the acute toxic effect of diclofenac in vulture as well as to ascertain if the drug had the potential to accumulate. In the first study, meloxicam in formulation was shown to be safe as a single oral dose up to 2mg/kg in African White Backed-Vultures (Gyps africanus). To further demonstrate the safety of food borne meloxicam, vultures were exposed to meat rich in meloxicam residues, with once again no signs of toxicity being evident. In the second study the drugs ability to accumulate was evaluated pharmacokinetically in Cape Griffon Vultures (Gyps corprotheres). From this study meloxicam was shown to have a very short half-life of elimination, making it unlikely that the drug could be a cumulative toxin. This was subsequently confirmed clinically by the absence of toxicity in birds receiving repeated doses of meloxicam. Although meloxicam was shown to be adequately safe, the safety of other veterinary NSAIDs still required elucidation. While further testing in vultures would have been possible, the small population size of the various vulture species made this unethical. Therefore a surrogate species needed to be identified. With the domestic chicken (Gallus domesticus) being commonly available, attempts were made to validate the chicken as a model. Although the dosed chickens did show similar toxicity patterns from clinical pathology to histopathology, a major problem was their higher tolerance making it impossible to use them as a surrogate. It was, however, concluded that the domestic chicken may be used in mechanistic studies in an attempt to establish an in vitro model. From the mechanistic studies both diclofenac and meloxicam were directly toxic to chicken and vulture renal tubular epithelial cells following 48h of incubation. It was later shown that this toxicity was associated with an increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which could be temporarily ameliorated by pre-incubation with uric acid due to its anti-oxidant activity. When cultures were incubated with either drug for only two hours, meloxicam showed no toxicity in contrast to the cellular toxicity present for diclofenac. In both cases no increase in ROS production was evident. In addition diclofenac influenced the excretion of uric acid by interfering with p-amino-hippuric acid channels. The effect on uric acid excretion persisted after the removal of the diclofenac. It was therefore concluded that vulture susceptibility to diclofenac results from a combination of an increase in cellular ROS, a depletion of intracellular uric acid concentration and most importantly the drug’s long half-life in the vulture. Unfortunately the importance of the drug’s half-life in the toxicodynamics makes it unlikely that in vitro testing will be possible.

Nethathe, Bono. "Pathophysiology of diclofenac-associated hyperuricaemia in Gyps spp. vultures." Thesis, University of Pretoria, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/76745.

Full text
Abstract:
Diclofenac toxicity in old world vultures is well described in the literature. As part of the toxicity of the drug, dead birds were generally found in the environment with signs of severe renal damage and gout. In birds that were tested before death, signs of hyperuricaemia and hyperkalaemia were also present. Although the clinical picture is very clear, the sequence of hyperuricaemia is not yet established with one possibility being drug induced renal damage leading to hyperuriceamia and the second being secondary kidney damage resulting from hyperuricaemic cellular damage. For this study we evaluated this sequence by assessing the effect of diclofenac on uric acid transporters in the chicken, a validated model for diclofenac toxicity. We speculated that diclofenac, a known uricosuric drug in people, inhibits the avian organic anionic transporters (OATs) with subsequent increase in plasma uric acid, precipitation and kidney damage. As a first step, the impact of diclofenac was evaluated in healthy chicken as it was not justifiable to kill vultures through diclofenac administration. For this two-phase study heathy chickens were treated intravenous with para-amino hippuric acid (PAH) and iohexol (IOH) in combination in phase 1 or this same combination with diclofenac (10 mg/kg) in phase 2. In both phases blood and faeces were sequentially collected. In phase 1, birds showed no signs of ill health, moreover PAH, IOH and uric acid clearance was rapid. In phase 2, two chickens eventually died with hyperuricaemia being present as soon as 8 hours after exposure. Necropsy showed classic signs of renal damage and hyperuricaemia. Pharmacokinetic analysis revealed a rapid half-life of elimination of less than 2 hours indicating that toxicity was due to irreversible inhibition of a physiological process. In phase 2 all the birds had decrease uric acid, PAH and IOH clearance. While tubular excretory rates of PAH were reduced in all birds in phase 2, they were 98% reduced in the two birds that died. Based on the global change in clearance parameters, it is concluded that diclofenac alters both renal perfusion (IOH measures glomerular filtration) and renal plasma flow. However death results from tubular secretion being reduced to negligible functionality for a prolonged period. With birds being highly reliant on tubular secretion of uric acid, we conclude that diclofenac hyperuricaemia is as a result of OAT inhibition and that cell death results secondarily from uric acid precipitation as described in gouty chicken. In the final conclusive study, we used next generation sequencing of the transcriptome of the renal tissue from one African white backed vulture (AWB), to establish if these tissues expressed OATs and multidrug resistance protein (MRP) transporters. Both these channels are known to be involved with uric acid transport either basolaterially or apically respectively. The Trinity assembled transcriptome, was used to create a local blast database from which predicted sequences of OAT1 and 2 and MRP2 and 4 from the Golden Eagle were evaluated for similarity. The golden eagle was selected as it was the closest related species phylogenetically that also had a complete genome sequence published. OAT3 was not included in this study as no avian sequence was available on the NCBI database. From the search, all four channels were identified in the AWB vulture kidney with high similarity to the golden eagle. Sanger sequencing confirmed the presence of the OAT 1, 2 and MRP2, 4 related mRNA. The predictive amino acid sequence and predictive protein channel (Swiss-Prot) was also used to provide some evidence that the proteins in question shared the required characteristic and function of OAT and MRP channels. After in silico analysis revealed the similarity of only AWB OAT2 gene with other species i.e chicken, expression study was carried out. It revealed that chicken OAT2 gene was expressed more than the vulture, this maybe the reason to vulture sensitivity to diclofenac. With the genes showing the presence of the requisite uric acid transport proteins in the kidney, the distribution of the OAT channels in the vulture was confirmed by immunohistochemistry (IHC) using mouse polyclonal OAT3 antibodies as sequence analysis showed high similarity between vulture OAT1 and mouse OAT3. As expected the IHC showed the presence of OAT1 with good distribution along the renal tubules.

Abstract:
Abstract. Q-Learning is an off-policy algorithm for reinforcement learning, that can be used to find optimal policies in Markovian domains. This thesis is about how Q-Learning can be applied to a test environment in the OpenAI Gym toolkit. The utility of testing the algorithm on a problem case is to find out how well it performs as well proving the practical utility of the algorithm. This thesis starts off with a general overview of reinforcement learning as well as the Markov decision process, both of which are crucial in understanding the theoretical groundwork that Q-Learning is based on. After that we move on to discussing the Q-Learning technique itself and dissect the algorithm in detail. We also go over OpenAI Gym toolkit and how it can be used to test the algorithm’s functionality. Finally, we introduce the problem case and apply the algorithm to solve it and analyse the results. The reasoning for this thesis is the rise of reinforcement learning and its increasing relevance in the future as technological progress allows for more and more complex and sophisticated applications of machine learning and artificial intelligence.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to identify exerciser athlete’s motivational orientation, coping strategies used and stressors that primarily is perceived in gym training. The study also studied gender differences in relation to motivation orientation, coping strategies and stressors. A survey was conducted with a quantitative design. The study included 118 participants (43 women and 75 men) aged 18 - 42. The results showed no difference regarding motivation orientation between participants. Participants were predominantly emotion-focused current choice of coping strategy. The three most perceived stressors were "Errors," "My performance" and "Injuries." Furthermore, women tended to higher perceive stressors such as “My shape”, “My weight/strength”, “Crowd”, “That instructors are present” and “Others at the gym” than men. For future research it would be interesting to examine the perceived stressors, coping strategies, and motivational orientation between individuals of different ages and number of years training at the gym. In order to determine if age and experience act as an influencing factor.

Abstract:
In the world where the Internet has nearly linked people in every corner, for some people, the nearby places seem to disappear. It might also lead to the alienation of friends and neighbours. For addressing the disadvantages of the change, this study aims to design for stimulating social interaction in outdoor gyms that are distributed in most communities and parks. Towards this goal, I engaged in designing and evaluating a movement-based interaction project. I invited 5 participants to work as designers for generating design ideas, using reflecting somaesthetics and bodystorming design methods. The bodystorming braid was used for depicting how design ideas generated and evolved. Design ideas were packaged into 3 types of design solutions -- cooperative play, competition and just talking. The most practical solutions for each kind were selected for building prototypes. These prototypes were evaluated with Wizard-of-Oz techniques by 4 participants, followed by a focus group. The qualitative analysis surfaced the important factors that impacted social interaction and major users, including the target users, usage, interaction, and maintenance.

Phipps, W. L. "Identifying drivers of Cape vulture (Gyps coprotheres) space use in southern Africa." Thesis, Nottingham Trent University, 2015. http://irep.ntu.ac.uk/id/eprint/27887/.

Full text
Abstract:
The decline of worldwide vulture populations due to multiple anthropogenic threats is recognised as one of the most important issues in avian conservation due to the loss of the important ecosystem services that they provide. The Cape vulture (Gyps coprotheres) is endemic to southern Africa and is listed as Vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature due to declines across its range largely attributed to poisoning and fatal interactions with the expanding power line network. In this thesis I provide a first insight into the factors that drive the space use patterns of Cape vultures in an effort to inform future conservation strategies. I deployed Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking units attached to vultures caught from the wild in the main breeding range of the species in northern South Africa, and in north central Namibia where the species has recently been declared extinct as a breeding species but a small population remains. Tracking units were also deployed on three Cape vultures released in Namibia as part of a pilot reintroduction program. The GPS tracking data were used to delineate the size and extent of the vulture home ranges and to identify key factors influencing their movement patterns. Their relative use of unprotected and protected areas was assessed, as well as the influence of vegetation characteristics. Finally, I present the first approximation of the spatial niche of Cape vultures using ecological niche modelling methods and provide a first assessment of the potential impacts of climate change on their future occurrence. Immature individuals and two of the reintroduced vultures traversed extensive ranges (maximum home range > 975,000 km2) and regularly crossed international borders, while wild-caught adult vultures tended to show a higher degree of site fidelity while foraging across more restricted ranges (maximum home range < 150,000 km2) closer to known breeding colonies. The vultures tracked from South Africa regularly used transmission line towers as roost and perch sites which has allowed them to extend their foraging range beyond their historical distribution into areas previously devoid of suitable perches. Although some adults often roosted at breeding colonies inside officially protected areas, all of the vultures foraged primarily on unprotected or privately managed land. The vultures generally tended to forage in more open habitats. The ecological niche models indicated that bioclimatic variables such as precipitation seasonality were the key factors that influenced the space use of the tracked vultures. The models predicted that climate change could potentially result in significant pole-wards shifts of up to 333 km in Cape vulture occurrence patterns, putting the core breeding colonies in the north of their range under threat. This study has provided a first insight into the ranging patterns of Cape vultures using GPS tracking methods and has identified that their extensive ranges, frequent use of unprotected land and close association with power lines puts them at serious risk from multiple threats during their regular foraging activity. The findings of this study confirm for the first time that the threat of climate change to Cape vultures should be seriously considered when planning future conservation measures. This research has demonstrated the ability of GPS tracking methods to identify new threats and key areas for the implementation of conservation measures.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This report investigates the technical and economic viability of introducing a Near Field Communication (NFC) client system in a gym environment. The system aims to aid the customers with logging their workout, retrieving information regarding exercises as well as enhancing the attendance control for both staff and customers. To identify what information to be presented, the most important quality factors and what functionalities are most desired, an exploratory case study was conducted. The study showed that there is a discrepancy between the desire to log ones workout and actually doing it. Most people want to keep track of how they workout, but despite the wide variety of workout applications on the market, they choose not to use them. The main concern expressed was that the logging needs to be fast and easy, indicating that the existing apps do not fulfill the ease of use desired. The system presented in this report is coupled to the gym where NFC tags pair an exercise to its corresponding logger and information in the application. The ability for the gym to track its customers’ workout habits is a rare feature that provides several economic benefits such as targeted advertisement, better maintenance control and new customer services analyzing their workout. For the system to be effective the customers need to use the system and log their workout, therefore it needs to be supported by the major mobile platforms. To accommodate this a hybrid platform approach using PhoneGap was used. This approach allows for development in one language that translates into native embedded web applications. At the time of writing Apple’s latest models do include the hardware for NFC communication. However, it is not possible to develop a custom NFC application for iPhone yet. By adopting the hybrid approach there is no need to create a whole new app when they do release the rights to do so. In conclusion, the technical viability of the NFC based system comes with the tradeoffs of dealing with the lack of standards of a new technology and being early on the market with a new feature. This calls for some custom solutions, since each platform adopts their own way of NFC implementation, but is manageable. The economic aspects are tied to the use of the system where the ease of use is the key factor for the customers. The end user tests indicate that NFC provides that small advantage over traditional workout applications needed to make logging attractive.

Abstract:
Abstract Background:  Both the fitness and gamification industry are booming with no signs of slowing down in the near future. Gamified applications are entering the markets, attempting to induce gameful elements into tedious environments to enhance intrinsic motivation. The same goes for the gym sector, as market leaders, such as the Swedish gym chain Nordic Wellness, are increasingly implementing gamification elements into their business models.   Problem: The true effectiveness of gamification on intrinsic motivation remains underdeveloped. Literature highlights the necessity of adapting gamification design towards the end-user, by considering the different effects from the individual game elements and the context. However, the gym context has been completely neglected, even though gamification has become increasingly utilized in this sector.     Purpose: The purpose of this study is to increase the body of knowledge on how extrinsic mechanisms such as gamification can influence intrinsic motivation. This study utilizes the context of a gamified gym application for Nordic Wellness to determine the motivational potential of game elements. Thereby, the research team attempts to add to the body of literature by expanding on the effectiveness of gamification on intrinsic motivation, while also contributing through entering a currently undiscovered domain of gamification in the gym context.   Method: A qualitative approach with fifteen semi-structured interviews has been conducted on young Swedish adults attending the Swedish gym chain Nordic Wellness.   Results: The findings suggest Self-Determination Theory as a valid framework to examine the effects of gamification on intrinsic motivations. Through connecting the identified themes and theory, a framework is proposed for the evaluation on the effectiveness of game elements on intrinsic motivation. From evaluating the discussed game elements through this framework, recommendations are made for a gamified gym application that is argued to positively satisfy the psychological needs and therefore enhance the intrinsic motivations in a gym context.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this assignment was to examine what meaning the body’s shape and form has on an active person who works out in gym. Method We have used a survey as our method in this assignment to get the results. The people that we have asked to answer the survey are 51 individuals, between 18- 65 years old that lives in a medium-sized Swedish town. All of these women and men are regularly working out at a gym. Result The results of this survey have shown that those who has work outed for over two years, feels satisfied with their body shape in a wider perspective then those who have trained less then two years and that age do not play a big part of it. Men are in general more satisfied with their bodies than women are. Men also work out more hours per week then women. The result also shows that older people are more satisfied with their bodies then younger but the younger in a large perspective have become more or less satisfied with their bodies after they started working out. The younger generation put a lot more focus on how other people’s bodies look and how their own shape look. Another result this survey have had were that far from everybody who visited the gym feel at home there, but most of them have become more satisfied with themselves after they have gone to the gym more regularly, especially those who have done it over two years’ time. Conclusion Many but still far from everybody that work out at a gym feels at home there, however many who do work out regularly feel more satisfied with themselves. Age play a small part in it all, older people care far less about their body in comparison with the younger generations. Gender also seems to play a part of the comparison as men feels more satisfied with their bodies than women do. Men tends to have more and longer workout sessions at the gym.

Abstract:

"Models of body and femininity in a local gym." Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, 2012. http://repositorio.pucp.edu.pe/index/handle/123456789/78693.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this work is to explore the ideals of body and behavior among adult women of our new Peruvian middle class attending a gym. It suggests that the ideals of bodies developed in this place are in closely related to traditional notions of gender roles of our society. But, at the same time, emphasizes the fact that they, not only try to have a body in accordance to social expectation, but also to interact or make friends, and to experience a variety of emotions in performing aerobic activity itself. Finally, the paper explores the meaning that these women give to their experience at the gym. Not only does this experience get them closer to the ideal body, fixed by the social standards of femininity, but the experience turns into an opportunity to discuss and remake those models of femininity, and assert their own discourses of identity.
