Abstract:
In central Serbia, a total of 88 species which are natural enemies of the gypsy moth, i.e. 23 predators, 49 parasitoid insects and 10 saprophagous insects, and 6 pathogens, has been reported. The most abundant of them are the insects which attack the gypsy moth in the larval instar (41 species). Regarding the number of the species, the representatives of the Hymenoptera (14 species from Ichneumonidae family and 11 species from Braconidae family) and Diptera orders (12 species from Tachinidae family and 8 species from Sarcophagidae family) are most frequent. Regarding the predators of the gypsy moth, Carabidae family, from Coleoptera order, is most frequent. In addition, at some sites Lymantria dispar nucleopolyhedrosis virus and Entomophaga maimaiga had the dominant role in the reduction of the gypsy moth density.

Abstract:
Using a co-ethnographic approach to focus on one person’s story, we explore how a sense of place may be evident in self constructed Gypsy-Traveller identity and narrative. Mary’s recounting of her experiences of living and growing up in the Caldewgate district of Carlisle (UK) illustrates the place of family relations as a key element of Gypsy-Traveller self identity and suggests, we believe, the centrality of family and internal relationships as a strong feature in the construction of personal notions and narratives of place for Gypsy-Traveller people.

Abstract:
In this paper, we propose a consensus sequence for a putative complete Tirant retrotransposon. Several defective copies, as well as relevant sequences available in databases have been analyzed. The putative complete Tirant element is 8533 bp long, and presents all the structural features of a retroviruslike transposable element of the gypsy family. It contains three ORFs (open reading frames) that encode putative products resembling the retroviral Gag, Pol, and Env proteins. Southern blot analyses show that complete and defective Tirant elements are widespread in Drosophila melanogaster. The different hybridization patterns observed in several natural populations of this species suggest that Tirant is an active element. Key words: Drosophila, LTR-retrotransposon, gypsy, retrovirus, envelope protein, phylogeny.

Abstract:
It has become increasingly clear that retrotransposons (RTEs) are more widely expressed in somatic tissues than previously appreciated. RTE expression has been implicated in a myriad of biological processes ranging from normal development and aging, to age related diseases such as cancer and neurodegeneration. Long Terminal Repeat (LTR)-RTEs are evolutionary ancestors to, and share many features with, exogenous retroviruses. In fact, many organisms contain endogenous retroviruses (ERVs) derived from exogenous retroviruses that integrated into the germ line. These ERVs are inherited in Mendelian fashion like RTEs, and some retain the ability to transmit between cells like viruses, while others develop the ability to act as RTEs. The process of evolutionary transition between LTR-RTE and retroviruses is thought to involve multiple steps by which the element loses or gains the ability to transmit copies between cells versus the ability to replicate intracellularly. But, typically, these two modes of transmission are incompatible because they require assembly in different sub-cellular compartments. Like murine IAP/IAP-E elements, the gypsy family of retroelements in arthropods appear to sit along this evolutionary transition. Indeed, there is some evidence that gypsy may exhibit retroviral properties. Given that gypsy elements have been found to actively mobilize in neurons and glial cells during normal aging and in models of neurodegeneration, this raises the question of whether gypsy replication in somatic cells occurs via intracellular retrotransposition, intercellular viral spread, or some combination of the two. These modes of replication in somatic tissues would have quite different biological implications. Here, we demonstrate that Drosophila gypsy is capable of both cell-associated and cell-free viral transmission between cultured S2 cells of somatic origin. Further, we demonstrate that the ability of gypsy to move between cells is dependent upon a functional copy of its viral envelope protein. This argues that the gypsy element has transitioned from an RTE into a functional endogenous retrovirus with the acquisition of its envelope gene. On the other hand, we also find that intracellular retrotransposition of the same genomic copy of gypsy can occur in the absence of the Env protein. Thus, gypsy exhibits both intracellular retrotransposition and intercellular viral transmission as modes of replicating its genome.

Abstract:
English Title:Crime and socialisation dynamics in sub-cultures: Case of Gypsies in KaramanAbstractIn this study, the relationship between crime and the socialization process in Gypsy subculture is examined. This is is a qualitative study analysing the relationship between crime and the socialization process among Gypsies in different parts of Karaman between the years 2014-2015, especially the “Yeni” neighborhood known as Abdali district. In-depth interviews helped us to group Gypsy families into four different family types. It can be said that during unique socialization process of Gypsy subculture, Gypsy individuals’ attitudes to crime is shaped in the context of its unique dynamics through their families, relatives and friends. Unlike other social groups, the Gypsy subculture allows forming a habitus conducive to be involved in crime. Although they have common social characteristics with Gypsies living in different parts of Turkey, Gypsies in Karaman have a distinctive lifestyle and habitus due to their unique socialization process. Keywords: Gypsy; crime; culture; religion; socialization ÖzetBu çalışmada Çingene alt kültürü içerisindeki toplumsallaşma sürecinin suç ile ilişkisi incelenmektedir.

Annotation: My master's thesis deals with the gypsy children in schools. The main goal of the thesis was to find out success rate of gypsy pupils in finishing elementary schools and special classes by the elementary school, and to find out how teachers work with gypsy children and what the experience of teachers in working with gypsy kids are. The next part of my research focuses on gypsy pupils in the fifth grade and how they see their future and their prospects. In the end of my research focused on educational counseling I investigated how the educational counselor and teacher can influence education of a gypsy pupil in the school. The whole thesis is divided into four chapters. First three chapters are focused on theory. The first chapter is focused on the history and culture of Gypsies, their origin, traditional family relations and customs, music, language and their relation to the major society. The second chapter describes the younger school age, its maturity, physical, emotional and language development. It also deals with the development of cognitive processes, socialization and failing in school. The third chapter deals with the education of gypsy children, their integration into primary schools and with issues related to school. The fourth part is a research part. It provides information on the...

Almeida, Sofia Ferreira Sotto-Mayor de. "O sucesso escolar de alunos ciganos: estudo de caso numa escola de 1º ciclo do ensino básico em Lisboa." Master's thesis, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10071/15478.

Abstract:
As a part of the Master's Degree in Education and Society I set out to make this dissertation, taking as a starting point the following question: "What family processes can explain the "unexpected" success of gypsy students?" The main objective was to understand the family practices and processes that Roma families use that can relate to the success or failure of their children. The method adopted was a case study that integrated the documental analysis of the students' school processes, and interviews with the parents (five mothers) of these children. The interviews allowed to establish a comparison between parents, whose children are successful at school or, unsuccessfully, and also verify the practices used by them. The chosen school for the study was a Lisbon primary school, with a large number of gypsy students. In conclusion, it is due to the experience that each child has within the school that one can see the difference and inequality in their performance, that is, although there are few traces that distinguish the family life of these children, it is the experience that will have the main role.

Abstract:
This dissertation considers Henri Rousseau (1844-1910) as a painter and as a figure of discourse. It addresses the longstanding concern of Rousseau’s resistance to interpretation and proposes that this derives from Rousseau’s incomplete fulfillment of the professional obligations of the artist, specifically, from his failure to motivate his work through the pursuit of what modern art critics commonly called “a problem.” Rousseau did not practice painting as artists of his day did, and because of this difference—first articulated by Guillaume Apollinaire in 1908 as an absence of artistic inquiétude—he entered the discourse of art with unprecedented susceptibility to reinvention. The Rousseau we know today, the Rousseau who was a miraculous modernist in the interwar period, and the Rousseau who emerged in the context of the avant-garde in the earliest years of the twentieth century share little besides a name, and this frustrates any effort to write a coherent history of the painter and his pictures. Rather than propose once again Rousseau’s recuperation into a traditional art-historical narrative, this dissertation tells the history of a maker who produced admirable images but fulfilled few other author-functions, and it tells the history of writers who, compensating for Rousseau’s authorial deficits, produced a new artist, a new body of work, and widespread puzzlement about the place of each in the history of modern art.

Full text
Abstract:
The present paper is a salvage Linguistic Anthropology, in which attempt has been made to document a nearly-extinct language known as māṅgtā bhāsā, and to suggest appropriate measures for saving it from complete extinction. The word māṅgtā is said to have been derived from māṅā, which means ‘to ask for’ or ‘to beg’. The language is spoken by a few groups of the Bedia, which is a Scheduled Tribe (ST) in India with a population of 88,772 as per Census of India, 2011(Risley [1891]1981; Bandyopadhyay 2012, 2016, 2017). Bedia is a generic name for a number of vagrant gypsy like groups which Risley has divided into seven types. They live by a number of professions such as snake-charming, selling of medicinal herbs, showing chameleon art or multi-forming. Almost all of them have become speakers of more than one language for interacting with speakers of different languages in the neighbourhood for the sake of their survival. Even the present generation has almost forgotten their native speech, and their unawareness of the language becoming extinct is of concern to us. Elders still remember it and use it sometimes in conversations with the fellow members of their community. The ability to speak this language is construed with regard to the origin of this particular group of Bedia. In fact, the language had given them the identity of a separate tribal community while they demanded the status of ST in the recent past. Thus, socio-historically, the māṅgtā language has a special significance. In spite of being a distinct speech, there has been almost no study conducted on this language. This is one of the major motives for taking up the present endeavour. This project conducts morphological, phonological, syntactical and semantic studies on the māṅgtā language. Sociolinguistic aspects of this language have also been considered. The language has its roots in the Indo-European language family with affinity to the Austro-Asiatic family. The paper interrogates whether māṅgtā can be called language or speech. The study required ethnographic field work, audio-visual archiving, and revitalization, along with sustainable livelihood protection of speakers of the language.
