<p>Theoretical background: The dynamic development of modern-day economies causes a rapid obsolescence of economic resources that leads to a reduction in companies’ total capital. Current accounting methodology does not provide clear procedures for relevant measurements and reflections on obsolescence in financial reporting.</p><p>Purpose of the article: The purpose of the paper is to develop a relevant accounting methodology for objective representation of a company’s assets and capital value in financial reporting as well as preventing the loss of capital due to obsolescence.</p><p>Research methods: This paper critically reviews the extant literature and international accounting standards. The proposed methodology is based on the concepts of capital maintenance (physical and financial) and the approach of replacement assets value, originally formulated by Schmidt (1921) in their organic balance theory.</p><p>Main findings: The main result of the paper is substantiated reasonableness of relevant reflection of obsolescence in accounting and financial reporting through a specially created account – reserve for capital stock obsolescence with retained earnings as a main source of its formation. The application of the proposed <em>ex-ante</em> approach ensures the preservation of productive energy of capital and the possibility of its reproduction in a qualitatively new (innovative) technical and technological form.</p>

Abstract:
This case is written at a time when organized retailing in India was booming, opening up opportunities for numerous big indigenous and foreign players. Also, with the rising disposable incomes of the Indian middle class and their changing tastes and preferences, they were becoming more and more demanding. The case is written at this crucial juncture of the changing economy wherein a mammoth like H. & R. Johnson, with a rich lineage of product and process innovations and international and domestic (Indian) market leadership needed to make the best out of the changing economy. Should HRJIL ride the retail wave by offering different products from its broad range of products, like ready-made kitchens, living rooms and the like; or should the company, given its dreams and present capabilities, utilize the unmet customer service gaps to provide services required of laying tiles, and in the process, develop servicing capabilities to become an end-to-end solution provider to its customers. The purpose of this case is to enable students to practice making decisions for the company at this important point in time with regard to the market opportunities by considering the capabilities and the core competencies of the company, its business model, and the existing distribution network.

McCarthy, Gerard John. "Knowledge management within a multinational knowledge led company." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2009. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/603/.

Full text
Abstract:
The semiconductor industry relies on knowledge sharing and collaboration between its employees and amongst subsidiary companies to remain competitive in an ever changing, market driven environment. Practise has changed from workers supplying labour to workers supplying knowledge. Technology improvements and investment in automation have provided companies the platform to generate, codify, harness and exploit knowledge as a means of improving organisational performance. This research explores knowledge dynamics in the organisation and specifically looks at knowledge sharing within a subsidiary and among subsidiaries in a multinational corporation. The corporation in question operates its manufacturing facilities as competing business units. The purpose of the research was to establish if this method of organising business units provides the overall corporation with a competitive advantage, or if competing business units inhibits performance preventing or restricting the potential for a competitive advantage for the corporation. To determine how knowledge is shared within the organisation a series of semi-structured interviews were conducted. Senior managers and professional staff across a number of disciplines were interviewed. Knowledge sharing within functional area departments, collaboration between functional area departments, knowledge systems and compliance to knowledge systems were used as determinants to establish the extent of the knowledge dynamic in the subsidiary. The relationship between knowledge sharing and how it impacted the “bottom line” performance of the subsidiary was also considered in an attempt to quantify the impact knowledge sharing has on performance. To determine how knowledge is shared between subsidiaries, two case studies were conducted. The first case study involved a benchmarking visit to allow two of the corporation’s subsidiaries to compare best practice cost systems with multi-disciplines involved. The second case study involved a cross functional team of technical staff to define a manufacturing facility technical yield roadmap. Significant cost, productivity and yield improvement at the site was attributed to the success of collaborative units established at site. Establishing collaborative units was a precursor to setting up a network within the site to promote knowledge sharing in the organisation. The site was cognisant of the impact of effective knowledge sharing and receptive to sharing knowledge on an informal or formal basis. The site put great stock in codified knowledge and invested heavily in automating knowledge based systems. Many barriers to knowledge sharing were identified including compliance to codified procedures, departmental conflicts, viewing knowledge sharing as a burden, variation across automated systems, conflicts caused by the internet as a knowledge source and logistics due to geographical dispersion. Knowledge-led teams overcame many of these barriers. Success bred success to the extent knowledge sharing has become a business process in the organisation. Knowledge sharing is a two way process. It can be a vehicle for trust, respect and improvement. This research has shown knowledge sharing even within competing business units can produce a competitive advantage. An organisation is an accumulation of knowledge. A knowledge-led collaborative approach provides many benefits: it will advance the company, engage staff at all levels and favourably impact the “bottom line”. Knowledge management differentiated the local site from other corporate subsidiaries with the local site demonstrating “best in class” results on its key performance indicators. Encouragingly, there is ample opportunity to improve performance further once knowledge management is fully embedded as a business process across the organisation.

Abstract:
There are numerous histories of the Victorian goldfields, individual diggers experiences, and the digging community as a whole. By contrast, very little has been written about the early gold mining companies. This thesis seeks to address this dearth in part, with a longitudinal study of one of the leading gold mining companies in nineteenth-century Victoria. The Port Phillip and Colonial Gold Mining Company (Port Phillip Company) was one of many gold bubble companies formed in England during 1851-3 to undertake gold mining in Australia. Within a few years it was the only survivor of this episode of British corporate gold-fever. The thesis argues that the influence of Rivett Henry Bland, the companys managing director, was instrumental in its success, particularly in its early years when faced with anti-company sentiment and unfavourable mining legislation. The company established a large-scale operation at Clunes in 1857, rapidly assuming a pre-eminent position in colonial gold mining with its superior technology and mining practices. Historians generally portray Australian gold mining operations as small, locally funded and inefficient, prior to British capital investment in the late 1880s. While true of the larger picture, this simply emphasises the uniqueness of the British-owned and funded Port Phillip Company, the largest and most efficient gold mining operation in Australia from 1857 until the early 1880s. The company and its investment offshoot, the Victoria (London) Mining Company, invested in over thirty Victorian gold mining companies during the 1860s. Again, this runs counter to the general view that British investment in Australian gold mining began only in the late 1880s. Although the two companies investments equalled only a fraction of the later wave of British capital in absolute monetary terms, their contribution to the growth of the Victorian gold mining industry at the time was significant.

Kim, Minha. "A contending logics perspective on employer branding in a technology service company in Korea." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2015. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/6148/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to explore how employer branding in an organization in Korea is understood and constructed by its employees. Three focal research questions are raised: (1) ‘how do employees understand employer branding in the context of an organization in Korea?’(2) ‘which actors are the most influential in the employees’ perceptions of employer branding? and why?’ and (3) ‘how does the organization mediate societal logics and employees’ perceptions as a sensegiver?’ Drawing on a social constructionist approach though semi-structured interviews with employees and managers of a Korean organization, ‘growth obsession’ and ‘immanent individualism’ are identified as contradictory dimensions in employees’ perceptions of employer branding. The coexistence of these contradictory dimensions is understood in terms of contending logics of growth and individualism at the societal level. Employees’ growth obsession shows how deeply employees’ perceptions of employer branding are embedded in the dominant logic of growth. Immanent individualism reflects the coexistence of the growth logic and the alternative logic of individualism, and suggests employees’ agentive capacity in making sense of their organization’s employer branding. This thesis also points out that the organization’s role as a sensegiver is limited, in contrast to the assumption, dominant in the existing literature, of employer branding as an employer-driven strategy. The main theoretical contributions of the thesis lie in extending employer branding literature by illuminating it from the perspective of contending logics. This approach shows how employees’ perceptions of employer branding are tightly coupled with societal logics, and suggests considering the possibility of employees’ agency in enacting or rejecting the implications of these logics. Despite limitations in terms of generalizability, a rich and deep-rooted understanding of employer branding, situated in the context of the organization in Korea, is expected to provide a springboard for a more contextualized approach to employer branding both in the academic area and in practice.

Abstract:
Problem: The scarcity of resources and increasing awareness of human rights issues in the media and the public are increasing the pressure on companies to introduce a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy. Company Stakeholder Responsibility is a relatively new model in this field and is suggesting a wider approach to CSR. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to describe the topics of CSR, Stakeholder Theory and Company Stakeholder Responsibility and apply them in order to analyze the CSR strategy of H&M. The focus is on the similarities and differences between the theoretical requirements of the Company Stakeholder Responsibility model and the practical CSR strategy currently applied by H&M. Method: The approach used in this thesis is a case study approach with a focus on documentary exegesis. Documents were collected from H&M, media and NGOs and two interviews were conducted. Result: The CSR strategy of H&M is based on their seven commitments and has a very strong focus on the work with their suppliers. The main instrument for the implementation of the strategy is their Code of Conduct (COC) and for the monitoring, there is an auditing system with regular audits conducted by H&M. Conclusion: H&M with their CSR strategy has many similarities with the Company Stakeholder Responsibility model and they are trying to expand it to more stakeholders. While their strong focus on suppliers is good because they are their most important stakeholders, which also brings a danger of neglecting other stakeholder in terms of CSR. The strong focus on the price in their business model might also bring problems.

ABSTRACT Title: The profit model of construction company: an example of company H. Page:76 School:National Taipei University of Technology Department:EMBA of Business Management Time: March,2019 Degree:Master Researcher: Pao-Shi Liu Advisor:Chien-Cheng Chen Ph.D. Keywords:Land developers、Urban planning review、Property registration、Scrivener、Architect、Luxury property tax The real estate industry is the bellwether business for Taiwan economy, and it leads the development of related industries. For example, it includes cement industry, gravel industry, tile industry, paint industry, construction industry, foundation construction, architectural design industry, property consignment industry, decoration work gardening work, joiner work, and so on. The massive construction manpower and construction materials, and even the catering industry that provides construction personnel also benefit from activities. The whole industry covers a wide range of business, so that it has a significant impact on boosting the economy. Therefore, it is so-called the bellwether industry. Luxury houses in Taiwan have been gradually declining since 2014, and several indicating projects of luxury properties such as ‘One Park Taipei’ case and ‘Peace Palace’ built by Yuanlih Group, ‘55 TIMELESS’ case built by Continental Engineering Group, ‘Kingdom Xinyi’ case C and D, did not make a fortune without considering the customer group. It was a different from the economic environment in boosting period. Due to the Taipei city government took the lead to issue luxury property tax since July 2011, and levied the tax in 2012. However, in the past only a single-family building could be regarded as a luxury property, so that some high-floor and high-class projects were not included. To cope with that, Taipei city government increased property evaluation massively in January 2014 and started to levy tax based on single family in July 2014. As a result, luxury property tax increases highly and the property sale market shrinks. It imposes negative effect on economic development. Because construction companies have to invest huge capital on acquiring construction site, so companies need proper financial plan before putting projects on market. The research is about that how company H uses prime location to deal with luxury property tax and marketing shrink. It is through literature review and interview to understand the decision process and strategies made by the enterprise which decided to build a hotel project to make a profit based on economic circle. The study would be a basis for further research in real estate industry.

This study explores the business strategy of medical material and takes H Company as an example. Compared with many medical material companies, H Company has the advantages of European certification of medical materials, Vietnam production and targeting of the market of elderly people. At this time, medical material has a place in the world. The government encourages the medical materials industry to be an important industry in Taiwan in the future. The medical materials-related industries are crucial to the future transfor-mation and development of the Taiwan economy. This study uses the H company in Changhua County as an example to an-alyze the medical material industry management strategy and explore the SWOT of H company. This study used the qualitative research of the inter-view method, and the in-depth interview with the vice chairman of the H company of Changhua County. The interview content is mainly aimed at Tai-wan's medical material industry business strategy, problems and future im-provement directions, in order to provide suggestions for the revision of gov-ernment policies. The research results show that H company did encounter considerable challenges in the early stage of implementation. However, since the target market of H Company is an aging country in Europe, America and the main-land, and through the EU medical material certification and production in Vi-etnam, it can finally develop its own competitive advantage. Finally, this study proposes the future direction of Taiwan's medical material industry policy for the revision of government policies.

The printed circuit board(PCB)industry is the next leading technology following the footsteps of IC and LCD manufacturing in the electronic component industry. After 30 years of research and development in this field, Taiwan’s PCB industry has established a comprehensive supply chain that has competitiveness in terms of quality and price in the international market place. The production facility of Taiwan’s PCB industry has also expanded to Mainland China throughout recent years of business expansion. China’s rapid economic growth has attracted foreign investors including Taiwanese. Taiwan’s PCB industry is not exceptional. The more investments flow into Mainland China, the more production capacity is established there. China’s PCB output value increased to $54.6 billion in 2011, which outranks Japan as the top producer globally and accounts for 40% of the total global production. Facing this trend, how to use their competitive advantages to overcome the increasing challenges has become a top issue for PCB producers in Taiwan. The purpose of this study is to explore opportunities that would be derived from the signing of the ECFA agreement. Specifically, the study looks into how Taiwan’s PCB companies can benefit from the particular mode of economic activity provided by ECFA under the international trade and liberalization principles in oder to keep their momentum forward.

AbstractThe successful implementation of internal crowdsourcing (IC) in a company requires a precise description and definition of the personnel responsibilities for the various process levels and process components within each process phase of IC. As part of the research project ‘ICU—Internal Crowdsourcing in Companies’, we have developed a new role model for internal crowdsourcing based on a practical application of IC in the company GASAG AG, an energy provider located in Berlin, Germany. The aim of this article is to present the main features of this role model (Some aspects of this article will also be published in German. Please be referred to Daum, M., Wedel, M., Zinke-Wehlmann, C., Ulbrich, H. (ed.) (2020): Gestaltung vernetzt-flexibler Arbeit. Beiträge aus Theorie und Praxis für die digitale Arbeitswelt. Berlin: Springer Vieweg). It is based on the roles of the agile model of Scrum, because partial aspects of the internal crowdsourcing process and certain process steering tasks have similarities with the procedure and task descriptions of Scrum. Scrum, as a mature and practice-proven set of rules with role descriptions, rules, events and artefacts, provides helpful implications for the design of an internal crowdsourcing role model as we will prove in further detail.

Abstract:
This author had the pleasure of knowing and working with Spencer H. Bush, from the time he began his career at the Hanford Atomic Plant operated by the General Electric Company for the Atomic Energy Commission until his demise. This paper presents some of the unusual attributes he possessed, such as speed reading, his memory retention, and a connoisseur of fine wines. Papers presented following this presentation will emphasize and extol his accomplishments in the technical and engineering areas addressing the nuclear power industry. My remarks are from a perspective of serving with Spence for half a century and to emphasize his remarkable humanistic attributes, for example his ability to read a lengthy novel at the rate of a page every few seconds, and his photographic retention of the subject and details.
