<p>Theoretical background: The dynamic development of modern-day economies causes a rapid obsolescence of economic resources that leads to a reduction in companies’ total capital. Current accounting methodology does not provide clear procedures for relevant measurements and reflections on obsolescence in financial reporting.</p><p>Purpose of the article: The purpose of the paper is to develop a relevant accounting methodology for objective representation of a company’s assets and capital value in financial reporting as well as preventing the loss of capital due to obsolescence.</p><p>Research methods: This paper critically reviews the extant literature and international accounting standards. The proposed methodology is based on the concepts of capital maintenance (physical and financial) and the approach of replacement assets value, originally formulated by Schmidt (1921) in their organic balance theory.</p><p>Main findings: The main result of the paper is substantiated reasonableness of relevant reflection of obsolescence in accounting and financial reporting through a specially created account – reserve for capital stock obsolescence with retained earnings as a main source of its formation. The application of the proposed <em>ex-ante</em> approach ensures the preservation of productive energy of capital and the possibility of its reproduction in a qualitatively new (innovative) technical and technological form.</p>

Abstract:
This case is written at a time when organized retailing in India was booming, opening up opportunities for numerous big indigenous and foreign players. Also, with the rising disposable incomes of the Indian middle class and their changing tastes and preferences, they were becoming more and more demanding. The case is written at this crucial juncture of the changing economy wherein a mammoth like H. & R. Johnson, with a rich lineage of product and process innovations and international and domestic (Indian) market leadership needed to make the best out of the changing economy. Should HRJIL ride the retail wave by offering different products from its broad range of products, like ready-made kitchens, living rooms and the like; or should the company, given its dreams and present capabilities, utilize the unmet customer service gaps to provide services required of laying tiles, and in the process, develop servicing capabilities to become an end-to-end solution provider to its customers. The purpose of this case is to enable students to practice making decisions for the company at this important point in time with regard to the market opportunities by considering the capabilities and the core competencies of the company, its business model, and the existing distribution network.

Abstract:
In this case study of Hillerich & Bradsby Company, Inc. (H&B), the ways in which H&B implemented principle components of Just In Time (JIT) Manufacturing in the production of wooden baseball bats are identified. Various JIT components such as small batch production, a cellular layout, multifunctional workers, reduced set-up times, empowered employees, the kanban system, and supplier partnerships are discussed and applied to H&B productions. An analysis of selected financial ratios indicated that JIT successfully contributed to the maintenance of H&B's production efficiency and market leadership. While the first section of the paper briefly outlines the history of the H&B company, the second section addresses the JIT manufacturing process. Seven principle components associated with the JIT manufacturing process are addressed and applied to H&B's operations. In conclusion the limitations associated with H&B's implementation of the JIT manufacturing process are identified.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT The staff needed for the support of cleanup operations can be large even for moderately sized spills. Marshaling sufficient and qualified people to respond on short notice at locations throughout the world can tax even the largest corporations. This paper describes how Chevron has prepared for this important aspect of spill response. Basically, Chevron has formed 13 separate teams covering specialty areas such as safety, finance, public relations, and legal. Each teams is organized and managed by people who regularly work within that function. Members of each team are regular employees of the various Chevron companies throughout the world. The incident command system and coordinated plans are the common threads which allow these groups to work together effectively. Drills and self-audits are used to keep the plans current and team members prepared. The organization and activities of the Safety, Fire and Health (SF&H) Functional Team is described in detail as a illustrated example of the functional team approach. This team consists of about 50 professionals in related fields. To facilitate rapid mobilization worldwide, each member has been medically qualified and has a current passport and selected inoculations. The team plan outlines the responsibilities of each professional group, the call-out procedure and telephone lists, and information on pre-identified SF&H contractors that can be called upon if additional resources are needed. The plan is flexible so that it can be used by one or two people to handle all SF&H functions at a small spill or by many persons within each specialty for larger incidents.

Abstract:
Synergistic effects arise as effects of joint action based on mergers or acquisitions. Bundling is a common part of the growth strategy. A merger may acquire forms of merger or merger. Acquisition represents the acquisition of the ownership and management value of one company over another. Theory distinguishes in this case from property acquisitions in which the acquisition of the company's assets and capital acquisitions occurs, in which the acquisition of a decisive share in the voting rights of the company is obtained. Reasons for merger and acquisition are to gain more market share, restructure entities, improve balance of payments, and so on. The success of the merger and the acquisition confirms the emergence of a synergy effect. In determining the value of synergies in this article was used newly created Model H, which is based on a valuation of the business enterprise.

Abstract:
<p>This article describes the possibilities of improving customer satisfaction from the company's involvement in every point of interaction via digital marketing communication instruments and the customer's journey map concept. To achieve this goal, the literature on the concept of customer travel was examined, the results from a two-year monitoring of two production companies were selected and the companies' online and offline marketing communication with clients was presented. The findings indicate that the customer experience should be simple and intuitive for the customer's perception. The customer experience is not limited to certain channels of interaction and is not one-time. Rather, it is the sum of the customer's feelings at every point of their interaction with the company that accumulates during the customer's journey. Managers must design and create a customer’s travel map in order to direct their customers to a correct purchase decision, according to the company. The customer journey map includes elements such as staff, instruments and content, each of which influences the final customer experience and together create synergies that give the company the opportunity to maximise customer satisfaction and increase its income. Effective management of the customer's journey map design must be supported by digital means, especially in marketing communication. The customer's journey map should be tailored to the specific industry and this opens up the need for further research in this field.</p>

Abstract:
Introduction. The objective of this work was the radiation survey in the vicinity of “The 30th Shipyard” Company. The studies were carried out during the period between 2014 and 2016 within the supervision area and in the area of the radioactive trace formed after the accident of 1985 in the nuclear submarine.Material and methods. The following methods were used in the course of the survey: pedestrian gamma surveys, gamma spectrometry measurements of radionuclides using a gamma spectrometer, and radiochemical extraction of 90Sr, followed by measurement of its activity at radiometric installations.Results. Gamma ambient dose equivalent rate within the supervision area beyond the radioactive trace varies within the range between 0.09 and 0.18 µSv/h. The specific activities of 90Sr, 137Cs, and 235U in soil do not exceed 11, 34, and 5.8 Bq/kg, respectively. The specific activity of 60Co in the soil of the Dunay village is lower 0.42 Bq/kg and does not exceed 4.9 Bq/kg at the rest part of the supervision area. The area of the radioactive trace limited by 0.13 µSv/h iso-line does not exceed 0.5 km2, while that limited by 0.3 µSv/h iso-line - 0.0063 km2. Within the area of the trace, the highest value of the gamma dose rate accounts for 0.60 µSv/h. Soils contaminated with emergency radionuclides do not belong to solid radioactive waste. Emergency radionuclides migrated in soil up to 20 cm depth. Today, 137Cs is firmly fixed in the soil. 40-45% of 60Co activity is in acid-soluble form. Under specific conditions, it can migrate deep into the soil and be accessible to plants.Conclusions. Within the supervision area of “The 30th Shipyard” Company, except for the area of the radioactive contamination trace induced by the accident, the radiation situation is the same as that in the area of the Primorskiy Krai. The soil of the radioactive trace does not belong to solid radioactive waste. In the future, the improvement of the radiation situation on the trace will be mainly due to the physical decay of radionuclides.

Abstract:
Enhanced natural radioactivity due human activities can be harmful to the environment and human health depending on the amount of exposure. A sensitive gamma spectrometry system consisting of 7.6cm x 7.6cm Nal(Tl) scintillation detector coupled with Canberra series 10 plus multichannel analyzer was used to determine the radioactivity concentration of natural radionuclides 232Th, 238U, and 40K in soil samples collected from the five communities around Ashaka Cement Company. The results obtained showed that the radionuclides are present in the soil samples in varying concentrations ranging from 11.36 Bq kg−1 measured in Badabdi to 98.06 Bq kg−1 in Ashaka Cement for 238U, from 13.21 Bq kg−1 in Jajami to 44.36 Bq kg−1 in Ashaka Cement for 232Th and from 65.50 Bq kg−1 in Gwangila to 415.62 Bq kg−1 in Julgwal Barkono for 40K. Absorb dose rate and annual effective dose rate due to these radionuclides are in the range 36 nGy h−1 in Badabdi to 50 nGy h−1 in Ashaka Cement and 0.132 mSv to 0.194 mSv in Badabdi and Ashaka Cement, respectively. These results are within global limits recommended by UNSCEAR. Therefore, the environmental matrices around the factory could be used without any restrictions

Friedman, Walter A. "John H. Patterson and the Sales Strategy of the National Cash Register Company, 1884 to 1922." Business History Review 72, no. 4 (1998): 552–84. http://dx.doi.org/10.2307/3116622.

Abstract:
This article assesses John H. Patterson's influence on the development of sales management and modern understandings of salesmanship. From 1884, when Patterson started the National Cash Register Company, to his death in 1922, the firm dominated its industry. At the heart of the company's success was its sales force. Patterson created an intricate system of management to monitor and train company salesmen. He gave them scripts to memorize and assigned them territory to cover. He held conventions and thematic sales contests, and pressured salesmen to rid their regions of competition. Patterson sought to create a method of sales management that encompassed all aspects of selling, from the calculation of quotas and commission rates to the motivation of discouraged salesmen. While much attention has been paid to efforts to improve the efficiency of production processes, especially those advocated by Frederick W. Taylor, Pattersons work at N.C.R. reveals a contemporary effort to reform methods of distribution.

Abstract:
The former majority shareholders of Industria Nacional de Clavos y Alambres de Puas, S.A. (INCA), a large Nicaraguan steel company, sought to recover from Harlow & Jones, Inc. (H & J), a U.S. steel company, the purchase price of a shipment of undelivered steel billets. Following the Sandinista revolution, the Nicaraguan Government had “intervened” in INCA and it, too, demanded the funds that H & J interpleaded into the court. The district court rejected the claim of the Sandinista Government and allocated the funds to the benefit of all parties who held shares in the company prior to the intervention. On cross-appeals by the claimants, a panel of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit (per Kaufman, J.) affirmed in part and reversed in part, and held: the act of state doctrine does not bar judicial resolution of the dispute over the funds; the actions of the Sandinista Government amounted to a taking without compensation that will not be enforced by the U.S. courts; and the district court’s allocation of pro rata shares for all of the preintervention stockholders, including minority interests, was equitable.

Abstract:
Purpose This study aims to examine the effect of the structure of board of directors and company ownership on social responsibility disclosure of listed companies on the Tehran Stock Exchange. Design/methodology/approach The variables of the study included independent board of directors, institutional ownership, managerial ownership, family ownership and family-managerial ownership. The study population consisted of 125 listed companies on the Tehran Stock Exchange during the years 2009-2014. Content analysis used to measure social responsibility disclosure level and test hypothesis was performed using multiple regression analysis. Findings The results demonstrated that there was no significant relationship between any of the independent variables and the level of social responsibility disclosure. This study empirically shows managers, investors and other stakeholders that if business owners are made of different groups, namely, institutional ownership, managerial and family ownership, it will not affect the social responsibility disclosure in annual reports. Originality/value The outcomes of the current study may bridge the gap between social responsibility disclosure and ownership structure in a developing country like Iran.

Krzeczewska, Olga. "The Competitors’ Response to a Bankruptcy Filing Announcement Made by a Stock-Listed Company Depending on Sector Characteristics." Annales Universitatis Mariae Curie-Skłodowska, sectio H – Oeconomia 55, no. 1 (May 11, 2021): 31. http://dx.doi.org/10.17951/h.2021.55.1.31-40.

Abstract:
<p>The main aim of the article is to determine how the bankruptcy filing announcement of a stock listed company affects the market valuation of its competitors, depending on the sector characteristic. An event study was conducted on the example of returns to shares of companies comprised in the WIG index and operating in 9 sectors. It is indicated that the bankruptcy filing announcement is quickly (within one day) incorporated into the share prices of competitors of the announcing firm. It is confirmed that the direction of market reaction toward share prices of competitors is differentiated by the characteristics of the sector. Averaged results show that the competitive effect occurs in the sectors with a high level of concentration, while the contagion effect is noted in sectors with low concentration. Companies from sectors characterized by low leverage experience the competitive effect. No information transfer was found for a group of companies in sectors characterized by high leverage.</p>

Full text
Abstract:
The initial support and tie foundation problems of a railroad track built in 1974 to carry axle loads 21% greater than presently (1998) permitted under interchange laws at a speed of 88 km/h are presented. Some of the concerns related to and affecting the final rehabilitation that resulted in a final satisfactory performance are documented. The foundation engineer's interest is directed to the ballast, the tie, and to a lesser extent the rail's behaviour. Cobble-sized (75-150 mm) river gravel was used as the source for the ballast in the rehabilitation. The ballast's satisfactory performance has permitted the establishment of guidelines for future use of this type source of material where suitable quarried rock is not available. The railroad's satisfactory performance after rehabilitation has proven that the design concepts involving 36 t (40 tons) axle loads operating on 60 kg/m (119 lb/yd) continuously welded rail, concrete ties, and ballast manufactured by crushing from a river aggregate were achievable.Key words: railway track, concrete ties, ballast aggregate, aggregate, crushed face, rail, 36 t (40 tons) axle loads.

Abstract:
The sale of luxury goods during the 1930s represents an incongruous aspect of American business that has been largely ignored by historians. This essay focuses on the efforts of one manufacturer of high-quality, elegant glassware, A. H. Heisey & Company of Newark, Ohio, to survive the Great Depression. Heisey created successful new sales strategies and product designs to meet the changing tastes of its customers. Although difficult to gauge with precision, Heisey's business also benefited from the overlapping influence of several New Deal measures: the Beer–Wine Revenue Act, the National Recovery Act, and the National Housing Act. Paradoxically, Heisey was most hampered by President Roosevelt's adoption of fiscal restraint in 1937, a policy that the company's Republican executives strongly advocated.
