Hammond, Catherine Campbell. "Relationships between psychological factors and immune dysregulation in context : a life-course approach." Thesis, University of Essex, 2018. http://repository.essex.ac.uk/22333/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis provides evidence about relationships between adverse exposures, psychological responses to them and immune dysregulation. The approach taken is informed by theories about the life-course, the stress process, the stress response and the inflammatory theory of depression. The first two empirical chapters provide evidence about the contribution of psychosocial factors to immune dysregulation. Immune dysregulation is measured by onsets of asthma and rheumatoid arthritis during adulthood. Comprehensive life-course data are used to provide valuable evidence about the epidemiology of each

I describe a series of seven experiments investigating how undergraduate students' comprehension of 2x2 `interaction' bar and line graphs widely used to present data from two-way factorial research designs is affected by both the graph format and the nature of the interaction with them. The first four experiments investigate how different Gestalt principles of perceptual organization operate in the two graph formats and demonstrate the effects of these principles (both positive and negative) on graph comprehension. A variety of topics on the statistical analysis of time series are addressed in this thesis. The main emphasis is on the state space methodology and, in particular, on structural time series (STS) models. There are now many applications of STS models in the literature and they have proved to be very successful. The keywords of this thesis vary from - Kalman filter, smoothing and diagnostic checking - to - time-varying cubic splines and intra-daily effects -. Abstract:
Physical processes such as the weather are usually modelled using nonlinear dynamical systems. Statistical methods are found to be difficult to draw the dynamical information from the observations of nonlinear dynamics. This thesis is focusing on combining statistical methods with dynamical insight to improve the nonlinear estimate of the initial states, parameters and future states. In the perfect model scenario (PMS), method based on the Indistin-guishable States theory is introduced to produce initial conditions that are consistent with both observations and model dynamics. Abstract:
To reduce bias in survey estimates, most longitudinal survey organisations, nowadays, prepare and include sets of weights in public use data files for use by analysts. Aside from correcting for non-coverage, the weights are usually designed to reflect the sample design as well as to correct for non-response error by combining design weights and non-response weight adjustments together. With regard to non-response weights, many longitudinal surveys implement similar strategies (referred to as the standard weighting approach in this thesis) to create them. The introductory chapter reviews the causes and consequences of turnout over-reporting, providing the basis for an in-depth research into solutions. Abstract:

The statistics of the amplitude, time and angle of arrival of multipaths in an indoor environment are all necessary components of multipath models used to simulate the performance of spatial diversity in receive antenna configurations. The model presented by Saleh and Valenzuela, was added to by Spencer et. al., and included all three of these parameters for a 7 GHz channel. A system was built to measure these multipath parameters at 2.4 GHz for multiple locations in an indoor environment. Another system was built to measure the angle of transmission for a 6 GHz channel. However, these digital contents can be easily modified and copied by end users. Hence copyright protection, copy control and integrity verification has become important issues in recent years. Digital watermarking is a means of claiming ownership of a data source. In the proposed system, block polarity and block index modulation are used to achieve watermark embedding. The block polarity is determined based on the nonzero quantized DC coef

Abstract:
From the last decade of the nineteenth century, the Siamese government developed many kinds of systems for recording empirical information in order to support the modern state administration. During the 1890s, the government began to register households in order to count the number of people in each locality. With such information, the government could collect taxes directly from the people, maintain law and order within the country and take care of the people's life more closely. After the registration of households was applied throughout the kingdom, the government took another step. In the

From the image structure tensor, we can determine the candidate directional modes that are most possible for representing the main edge direction in a block. After we find out the possible directional modes, we can just take these modes as our candidate modes for encoding the current block to improve the intra mode decision computation complexity. The second proposed algorithm is based on learning the m
