Two potable water quality monitoring tests, the H2S paper strip test and coliphage test, were evaluated on Chilean raw potable source waters and drinking waters that had received conventional treatment to render them safe for drinking. Abstract Three types of drinking water used in Thailand, tap water, rain water and deep well water (200 m) were tested for bacteriological and coliphage content. 13.5% of the samples contained only coliphage and 13% contained both coliphage and total coliforms. The incidence of coliphage in these potable water supplies reflect the probability of human pathogenic virus also surviving in these waters. The H2S paper-strip test was found to be an equally sensitive indicator of coliform presence compared to MF and MPN total coliform procedures.

This chapter presents Kant’s arguments for the thesis and antithesis of the third antinomy. It argues that Kant regards these claims as having a status that might be described as: ‘non-conflicting-when-correctly-construed’ (i.e., when construed as they ought to be construed on the assumption that Transcendental Idealism is true). The antinomy-resolving construal involves recognizing that, if Transcendental Idealism is assumed, an action can be free—in the sense of the product of a spontaneous ‘causality of freedom’—without failing to be event caused. Defending this interpretation requires discussion of Kant’s conception of ‘causality’ as well as of the plethora of meanings he bestows upon the term ‘freedom’. It also requires resolving an ambiguity in the meaning of ‘libertarianism’ that has crept into discussions of Kant’s views on free will. With these matters clarified, Kant—surprising as it may sound—emerges as a soft determinist—albeit one of a highly unusual stripe.

The induced ferrite and other high magnetic microstructures content changes are studied when 304 austenitic stainless steel stripe specimens are tested under different uniaxial tension deformation, namely its deformation less than 50%. Furtherly, the correlation is plotted between the resulting magnetic permeability or coercivity caused by these microstructures and deformation. Meanwhile, the optimal eddy current excitation frequency under different deformation was obtained, which was consistent with 3-D finite element analysis (FEA). Besides, other various factors affecting the quality of eddy current testing (ECT), such as temperature and conductivity, are also considered comprehensively during the tensile test. The results of the experiment and simulation calculation show that when the deformation is within 50% that necking deformation has occurred, the magnetic permeability of specimens increases with deformation, and gradually begin to have the magnetic properties of weak ferromagnetic materials, which also changes the optimal excitation frequency, which varies from 60 kHz to 110 kHz. Because of the electromagnetic response noise increase, the impedance plane diagrams of defects distort simultaneously, which leads to the quantitative evaluation error of defects.

The Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act 1974 and its successors was only part, albeit an important part, of the methodology used to control the Irish community. Very few terrorists were arrested and prosecuted under these Acts but they provided the British government with a wide range of effective information gathering powers. Many members of the Irish community had suffered from a lack of civil and economic rights in the North of Ireland in the past and were deeply concerned at the use of strip-searching, plastic bullets and shoot to kill policies there. But the Prevention of Terrorism Acts tended to have a chilling effect on political debate and action in the Irish community in Britain; as did a number of now notorious miscarriages of justice; such as the Birmingham Six, the Guildford Four and the Maguire Seven. At the same time, Frank Kitson’s intelligence gathering methods, referred to in his seminal text, Low Intensity Operations, were used to increase surveillance of the Irish community in Britain and much of the British media fuelled anti-Irish racism. Later the spread of similar policing tactics to other minority communities in Britain had the unintended consequence of building understanding of and support for the previously beleaguered Irish community.

This chapter addresses British composer Joe Cutler’s Bands (2008). This touching, insightful piece, deceptively simple, demands immense concentration and empathy. The text, by the composer’s father Richard Cutler, is a moving encapsulation of the traumatic experiences faced by child evacuees during the Second World War, as they left home and parents and boarded trains for unfamiliar places. With immense skill and daring, the composer strips his material to the bone with a pared-down, static harmonic base and stark, repetitive vocal lines to convey graphically the desolation and numbed emotions of the departing children. Rhythmic fluidity is provided by the interplay between irregular patterns in the piano’s left hand punctuated by percussive right-hand acciaccaturas, while the singer maintains a steady quarter-note pulse through syncopations and tied notes. In view of the plethora of high Gs, some prolonged, a tenor would perhaps be most comfortable, although a very light baritone with a secure high range could sound suitably disembodied.

This chapter explores the numerous and heretofore overlooked physical, personal, and psychological areas of overlap between Mo Testa in Dykes to Watch Out For and Linus van Pelt in Charles Schulz’s Peanuts. Many of Mo’s signature traits and hallmark qualities are ones she shares with Linus: from her insecurity and intellectualism to her philosophical nature and her role as reflective commentator for the group. Indeed, even Mo’s penchant for striped clothing can be seen as taking a sartorial cue from Linus, who is always clad in a t-shirt with strikingly similar horizontal stripes. While Bechdel never identified Schulz as an inspiration for her work nor the Peanuts gang as a model for her DTWOF crew, the suggestive echoes between Mo and Linus seem too numerous to be merely coincidental. Exploring the similarities between Mo and Linus reveals a compelling kinship between Bechdel’s work and one of the most well-known strips in the history of American comics, while it also sheds new light on the relationship that DTWOF has to its socio-cultural milieu.

Pharyngitis is common with incidence peaking from autumn to spring. Respiratory viruses are most commonly implicated, and are generally self-limiting conditions not requiring diagnostic workup or treatment. Bacterial pharyngitis is less common, is spread by droplets or direct transmission, and Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A strep, or GAS) is the most frequent cause. Haemophilus influenzae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and Neisseria gonorrhoeae are less frequent causes. Rapid antigen detection tests make the point-of-care assessment of GAS pharyngitis possible, although a negative test does not exclude infection. No method can distinguish oropharyngeal colonization from actual infection, but culture can obtain antibiotic susceptibility testing. Suspicion of infection with Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Bordetella pertussis, Haemophilus influenzae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Chlamydophila pneumoniae, or Corynebacterium diptheriae should be communicated to the laboratory so that the appropriate culture media is utilized. The Centor criteria provide a clinical predictive score that can give the likelihood a sore throat is due to a bacterial infection with the following: the presence of tonsillar exudate, tender anterior cervical adenopathy, fever over 38°C, and absence of cough. If three or four of these criteria are met, the positive predictive value is 40% to 60%. The absence of three or four of the Centor criteria has a relatively high negative predictive value of 80%, and may be use to evaluate whether antibiotics can be withheld or deferred. Oral penicillin or macrolide are used to treat streptococcal pharyngitis. Treatment may reduce severity, duration, transmission, and risk of post-infectious sequelae like rheumatic heart disease and post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis. Other complications include scarlet fever, streptococcal toxic shock syndrome, and quinsy. Otitis media, is frequent in the young children, possibly due to a short and horizontal Eustachian tube. Purulent material buils up leading to a bulging, red tympanic membrane which may rupture and discharge. Intense local pain and fevers may occur. Streptococcus pneumoniae, Moraxella catarrhalis, and Haemophilus influenzae are frequently implicated. Frequently there are no sequelae, although complications include hearing impairment, and less common are mastoiditis, bacteraemia, and meningitis. Diagnosis is clinical based on presentation and otoscopic examination. Microbiological diagnosis is possible through culture of exuate on swab or following tympanocentesis.

I doubt that Woody Guthrie had public lands specifically in mind when he wrote “This land is your land.” But I am sure he’d be pleased that each American citizen, through the agency of the federal government, is part owner of some six hundred million odd acres, roughly one quarter of the nation’s land. To be sure, a good deal of it would strike most of us as uninviting and not at all “made for you and me.” Guthrie couldn’t have been thinking of the Great Basin when he wrote of “the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts.” Even so, his words do fit the public lands. There we may be uplifted by natural wonders such as the Grand Canyon and what’s left of the “redwood forest.” There we are free to roam and ramble, for the signs read not “Private Property—No Trespassing” but “Please close the gate.” There, far horizons and the “endless skyway” can release us for a time from the narrowness of our lives. The federal estate is also rich in resources of a more conventional and coveted sort: timber, minerals, coal, oil, livestock forage, damsites, etc. Of course, sharing title with a couple hundred million other people would not give you or me much to say about how these lands and resources are used, even if they were managed by public referendum and not, as they are, by federal agencies. Except for weapons test sites and other military reservations, the public generally has free access to federal lands, but that does not mean that we may do whatever we like there. Private use is regulated in various ways. Rights to graze livestock, strip-mine coal, cut sawtimber, gather firewood, drill for oil, develop a ski resort, backpack into certain areas, excavate a prehistoric site, and so forth, are controlled by permit or lease, and some areas are closed to activities that some of us would dearly love to pursue. Extensive public lands and resources, whose use is governed by regulations rather than the wishes of those willing to pay most to satisfy their desires, may seem anomalous in a country ideologically committed to individual freedom, private property, and the free market.

Visitors to the Hull and East Riding Museum used to reach the climax of the Iron Age exhibition, Celtic World, by coming face-to-face with the extraordinary funerary offerings from three chariot burials at Wetwang Slack (Dent 1985). Now removed for urgent conservation, the iron swords from two male burials, their scabbards decorated with intricate, incised Celtic art, and the corroded iron mirror and sealed bronze container from the female burial, were displayed in Perspex cases. Beads of red glass ‘enamel’ adorned both swords and box, and a slender iron pin shone with a thin strip of glowing gold, entwined around a coral bead. These artefacts are marvellous testimonies to Iron Age craft skill, speaking of the repertoire of decorated objects through which power amongst these communities was underpinned and reproduced (Giles 2008). Behind these cases, setting the scene for these personal possessions or funerary gifts, is an oversized image—now the focus of that section of the museum: a reproduction of Peter Connolly’s impressive and moving reconstruction of a chariot burial (Fig. 19.1), loosely modelled on the Kirkburn K5 inhumation (see Stead 1991) and painted in the late 1980s. The image shows a tableau of mourners surrounding a grave, in which has been interred the body of an adult male (Fig. 19.1). He is lying over the wheels of a dismantled chariot, with a shield placed over his chest, and forequarters of pig lain on top. The box of the chariot (still attached to the pole shaft) is being lowered over the body like a coffin, before the grave is back-filled. The participants in this ceremony are predominantly male, with one woman at the edge in an apparent state of grief: two others are in the background, one keeping a pair of children at a distance from the proceedings. Two ponies are being led away from the scene, tossing their heads as if perturbed by the event. Such images have a powerful, instantaneous impact: ‘act[ing] at a distance, across the gallery, in a way a block of text cannot’ (James 1999a: 121).

Abstract:
As described in Chapter 1, psychosis is a syndrome. This syndrome can include a number of different signs and symptoms (see Chapter 2 on What Are the Symptoms of Psychosis?). In this chapter, we discuss the different diagnoses that may relate to psychosis. A diagnosis is a specific medical term given to an illness or syndrome by health-care providers. When a doctor evaluates someone experiencing psychosis, he or she gathers as much information as possible. This information comes from a detailed psychiatric interview and observations, medical records, additional information from family members, a physical exam, cognitive assessments, lab tests, and other types of evaluations to determine the illness underlying the episode of psychosis (see Chapter 5 on The Initial Evaluation of Psychosis). While gathering information to evaluate a first episode of psychosis, the doctor often comes up with a differential diagnosis. This is a list of the most likely reasons for the syndrome, in this case, psychosis. Doctors generally use a differential diagnosis to list the possible illness underlying any health problem. For example, if you go to the doctor for a fever, the doctor may make a list of possible reasons for the fever, such as a minor nose cold caused by a virus, strep throat caused by bacteria, pneumonia, meningitis, or other infections. To narrow down this list to the most likely diagnosis, the doctor then uses information from the history (asking questions), physical exam, and lab tests. Oftentimes a doctor uses a working diagnosis to guide treatment planning even if he or she has yet to decide on a final diagnosis. It is important for patients and families to recognize that making a specific diagnosis often requires long-term information that often is not fully available when a person first comes in for treatment. Being unsure about the diagnosis is one reason why a differential diagnosis and a working diagnosis are so important. A working diagnosis allows the doctor to begin an effective treatment plan even though a final diagnosis may not yet be clear. Some patients and families may want to get a specific diagnosis and may be skeptical when the doctor cannot yet definitively provide one.
