Abstract:
This dissertation intends to present and analyse the translation from English into Italian of the first twenty-five chapters of Habibi, a teenager and young adult’s novel written by the Palestinian-American author Naomi Shihab Nye. It has been necessary to present the theoretical approach to the literary translation studies, in order to focus the attention on the translation problems and provide suitable solutions and strategies. The first chapter gives an historical perspective on children’s literature from the end of the Nineteenth century till today, distinguishing the Italian and the American contexts. The description of the evolution process of this literary genre, which developed to satisfy the needs of the educational system, is its central issue. At the end of the chapter, we outline the main traits characterizing children’s literature and the image of the ideal reader. The second chapter provides an overview on Palestinian literature, especially on the features of the contemporary novel and the Diaspora literature. Afterwards, we present the author Naomi Shihab Nye and the book Habibi. In the third chapter we analyze the novel, focusing the attention on the rhythm of the narration, on the linguistic registers and the textual peculiarities found during the reading stage, according to the features of the children’s literature. The fourth chapter consists of the translation of the first twenty-five chapters of the novel. The fifth chapter begins with a section about the translation theory, the literary translation studies, focusing on the translation of children’s literature. Finally, there is the translation analysis. Here we present the strategies and the choices of the translation process, along with some practical examples with reference to theoretical studies. Special attention is paid to culture-specific items, lexicon and syntax. The source text can be found in appendix.

Abstract:
In narrative terms, this thesis analyses the spatial structure in the palestinian arabic novel especially in some literary works of gassan kanafani (1936-1972) and imil habibi (1922-1996). Its purpose is to demonstrate that the space of the novel is far from being simply a geographic setting; it is a narrative component. When considering the space as a verbal act able to be erected in a structure, we try to deal with its functional system. This can be achieved through the analysis of its narrative interrelations with the narrator, the character, the action and time. In the conclusion, we finally deal with the "spatiality" in the palestinian novel as a way of narrating the story

Abstract:
In the Arabo-Francophone culture, the literary value of narrative fiction often tends to intermingle with its subversive dimension. The present study deals with this problematical notion of subversion considered as a posture and a discursive modality. The disturbances inflicted on linguistic, enunciative and generic codes are analysed under the assumption that the writers' bilingualism and biculturalism favour this type of inspiration and nurture it. Indeed, the poetics of authors as different as Rachid BOUDJEDRA, Albert COSSERY, Edmond Amran EL MALEH, Émile HABIBI and Paul SMAÏL seem to meet around this double belonging, whether it is real or simply assumed. Together, text analysis and authors' postures observation enable us to discern a literary movement in which what is a priori offered as a political literature ends up being a metamorphosis of a literary policy

Scull, Christopher Thomas. "Utilizing Habit Reversal and Contingency Contracting to Impact Eating Habits With Obese Individuals." Scholar Commons, 2013. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/4578.

Abstract:
One of the most difficult set of behaviors for individuals to engage in is weight management. The United States boasts an astonishing 35% obesity rate in adults while children show almost a 20% obesity rate. These statistics identify the importance of developing effective methods to help change an individual's eating habits. There are many eating habits that may contribute to an individual gaining or losing weight over a period of time. Simplified habit reversal (SHR) has an impressive history in shaping desirable responses to compete with many different types of habitual behaviors. The present study extended the SHR procedure to eating habits in an attempt to affect change in types of foods and timing of eating for the purpose of weight reduction. Additionally, contingency contracting was added to increase the potential for adherence to eating habit goals. The three targeted behaviors were late night eating (LNE), consuming high sugar content beverages (HSCB), and unhealthy snacking (UHS). It was found that utilizing a treatment package utilizing a contingency contract plus SHR with typically developing adults could aide in reducing specific and well defined eating habits. A reduction in weight by all participants was also observed.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Public speaking is a challenge faced by people from all walks of life. Research in the area of public speaking has focused on examining techniques to reduce public speaking anxiety. Very little research, however, has focused on the acquisition of public speaking skills. While presenting speeches, many people engage in nervous habits that have the potential to decrease the effectiveness of the speech and their credibility as a speaker. This study evaluated the effectiveness of simplified habit reversal in reducing three of these nervous habits: filled pauses, tongue clicking, and inappropriate use of the word like. Following baseline, participants received simplified habit reversal training that consisted of awareness training and competing response training. During post-intervention assessments all 6 participants exhibited an immediate decrease in all three target behaviors.

This research approaches the process of habit-change in the thought of Peirce (1839-1914) starting from the hypothesis that there is a strong relation between self-control and pragmatism and that habit-change takes place by a stimulus, even though vague, to use reason with the aim of reaching a coherent and admirable conduct. Peirce who was a well-known chemist with a vast experience in laboratory and owner of an eclectic mind very well trained in Logic and Philosophy is considered as one of the greatest American thinkers and the father of pragmatism. Pragmatism which is a method that aims apprenticeship and evolution e that can be used to guide thought to higher levels of clarity has a normative realm as it aims deliberate conduct, which is conscious and self-controlled. In this research it was observed that the habit conception, which is that specialization of the law of mind whereby a general idea gains the power of exciting reactions (CP 6.145) is fundamental in Peirce´s pragmatism. It was also observed that the tendency to acquiring habits as an evolution principle has in its essence a tendency to change since evolution does not happen without habit-change and vice-versa. Through evolutionary habit-change, that inspires itself in an admirable ideal, which is also under evolution, tends to rational self-control and takes place in daily practice deliberate by logic

Abstract:
Arabic literature in Israel has evaded critical attention, or has been treated as an uncomplicated part of Palestinian national culture, on a quest for unification and an identity that was devastated in 1948. This dissertation complicates that narrative through close readings of short stories by five Arab citizens of Israel—Imil Habibi, Muhammad ‘Ali Taha, Muhammad Naffa‘, Hanna Ibrahim, and Zaki Darwish—between 1967 and 1983. Focusing on the relationship between geography and fiction, I suggest that literary constructions of “place” and “space” by these authors reveal a range of cultural negotiations that break down entrenched dyads: Palestinian yet Israeli; Palestinian on the one hand, Israeli on the other; spared exile, but suffering occupation. Instead, these writers evoke the hybrid and ambivalent experiences produced in the paradoxical spaces of Israeli-Palestinian life. I develop an analytical framework that incorporates geographic and literary theory. I use the work of humanists such as Gaston Bachelard, Yi-Fu Tuan, and Edward Casey to suggest that literature mediates geography in a way that communicates belonging, alienation, or personal and collective meaning. The framework is bolstered with the work of postcolonial theorists such as Homi Bhabha, along with historical and political sources, to capture the contextual resonance of the texts. After laying out these theoretical guidelines, I offer a historical account of Arabic literature in Israel and embark on four analytical chapters. Chapter Two explores Imil Habibi’s portrayals of anxiety around post-1967 Palestinian reunions. Chapter Three focuses on the themes of Muhammad ‘Ali Taha’s Palestinian collective identity in Israel. Chapter Four takes up the theme of “the land” in the works of Muhammad Naffa‘ and Hanna Ibrahim, in the context of 1970s land expropriations. Chapter Five explores a long story by Zaki Darwish and its depiction of the body’s phenomenological relation to the homeland. Rather than portraying counter-narratives that suggest a binary of “Israeli” and “Palestinian” always at odds, these authors portray the spaces and characters in between. They disclose the anxieties of finding a sense of place in the context of a dispersed Palestinian nation, geopolitical uncertainty, social marginalization within the state, and the subtle geographies of a historic homeland that both is—and is not—one’s own.

Abstract:
This report deals with the creation of Habit's website, which is aimed at private customers, habitsapp.eco. Habits is a small company in Gothenburg and they want to help companies, organizations and individuals to reduce their environmental impact in an easy and fun way. They have developed a web-based tool for this that will be launched in the fall of 2020 and the website created will be their "face out" for the tool aimed at private individuals. The report describes the steps and tools that were made and used to create this site. User stories have been made to get to know the user and identify their needs, sketches of the website have been made to easily illustrate how the site would look like and a sitemap has been created to know which pages the project should contain. How the creation has been done from HTML to Twig and the functionality behind things like menu, questions and answers section, support for multiple languages etc. Is brought up. In addition to this, tests have also been done by both me and my supervisor at Habits. Various tools have been used to ensure that the load time remains within an approved framework and tools such as the WAVE Evaluation Tool have been used to ensure the availability of the site. In the end, there is a finished product that fulfills Habit's purpose and hopefully is representative of their service and can draw users into their web-based tools.
Abstract: The main objective of this work is to analyze the process of belief formation in the scope of the new digital social networks and the possible consequences in the habits of conduct of their users. In particular, we will approach the (dis)informative phenomenon of fake news and their increasing dissemination in social networks, implying new ways of acquiring beliefs and habits of conduct. For this, we will use as an analysis tool the concept of belief and the dynamics of belief fixation as proposed by Charles S. Peirce (1931-1958), emphasizing the role of the scientific method in the justification of beliefs and the foundational-coherence theory of epistemic justification of beliefs offered by Susan Haack (1993). Next, we will investigate the possible influence of the new information technologies in the generation of beliefs and habits of behavior of social network users in the light of the different ways of establishing beliefs. We seek to emphasize the role that emotions/feelings play in such processes, including the scientific method of belief acquisition and its justification. Finally, we will try to analyze assumptions and consequences of the impact of deliberately promoted disinformation on the processes of beliefs and behavioral habits of users of digital social networks. We conclude by indicating the relevance of (1) recognizing the role of epistemic (genuine and degenerate) emotions and sentiments in the processes of acquisition and justification of beliefs and habits... Abstract:
Children's fruit and vegetable intake is well below recommended levels on average, but explanations for the wide variation in consumption remain elusive. This thesis investigates the determinants of children's food preferences and eating habits with the aim of informing the development of effective interventions to promote healthier diets. Study 1 examined the developmental patterning of food preferences from age four to 16 in a large cross-sectional survey. Vegetables were widely disliked at all ages with little evidence of developmental improvement, but children rated fruit unexpectedly highly. Study 2 investigated the relative contribution of parental behaviours and children's own traits to fruit and vegetable consumption in a large sample of preschool children. The strongest predictors of children's intake were parental intake and the child's food neophobia. Two studies further investigated the relationship with neophobia. In Study 3A, neophobia was significantly negatively correlated with intake of fruit, vegetables and protein, but not with intake of starchy, dairy, or fatty/sugary foods. These findings were based on parental reports of children's intake, but they were replicated in Study 3B which assessed food intake directly in a school setting. Study 4 investigated the relative contribution of genes and environment to phenotypic variation in neophobia in a large cohort of 9-11 year-old twins. Heritability estimates for neophobia were high but nevertheless over a quarter of the variance was accounted for by shared environmental factors, pointing to the importance of the home setting. Study 5 was a RCT of an exposure-based intervention aimed at increasing children's acceptance of vegetables. Intake was measured in taste tests and showed significantly greater increases in the intervention group than either of the control conditions. Finally, Study 6 tested the effectiveness of the intervention in a low-income population obtaining similar results. The implications and potential applications of these findings are discussed.

This paper presents research findings related to the human habits of using digital devices. Through theoretical research and empirical fieldwork, it’s clarified that there is a significant concern regarding how we use digital devices and there is health implication that follow. From this baseline this paper presents an application solution designed from the methods of gamification and persuasive computing, concepts where user motivation is a core for success. Therefore, we present a solution based on a social community because from the research and empirical work a community should be a good platform and the social interactions can provide a large amount of the motivation that has been deemed so relevant.

Abstract:
Many of us can relate to being tired and maybe even feel down during the winter months. Reports show that we spend more and more time indoors and with that, problems linked to low daylight exposure increases. The main recommendation from doctors is to try to spend more time outdoors to really get that dosage of the sun that one needs. Research also shows that people are not aware of the actual amount of time they spend either indoors or in their cars.  With this in mind, what could we do to create a healthier way of living?  In this project, I have chosen to explore how we can motivate and inspire people with a sensitivity to light to spend more time outdoors and help them stimulate their circadian rhythm. People that suffer from symptoms could in worst cases not even leave their bed making them unable to cope with their life. Using natural ways of changing habits could in most cases have a better effect than what heavy medication does.

This thesis analyzes the relationships between nature, humans, and technology; and analyzes the responsibility of each party in relation to the destruction of nature in John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath. The critique of technology is explicit. Technology is portrayed as possessive of monstrous qualities, as something uncanny that disrupts the familiar landscape. This critique is conveyed through the way the tractors perpetrate technological rape, in the way the men of science try to alter products' natural properties, and in the recurrent image of the road killings. Implicitly, the novel also criticizes the tenants' attitudes towards the land. By pointing out their contradictory behavior towards nature throughout the story, the novel lays bare the irony behind the tenants' pastoral speech. The pastoral ideal preached by the tenants-of how they are attached to the land, how the happiness is in the closeness with that land-is flawed, for, despite all their love and respect, they regard the earth as something to be used and exploited, without serious concern for preservation. My discussion of technology and nature in The Grapes of Wrath suggests that the novel presents a critique of both technological and human interactions with the environment, differing only in the level of explicitness in which they are portrayed. A crítica feita à tecnologia é explícita.

Abstract:
This dissertation examines possible differences in media habits and tastes between Christians and non-Christians. The study utilizes data from singles Internet personal advertisements to determine whether or not Christians, especially those with high levels of religiosity or who may be part of the Christian Right, have different television viewing patterns. Three models were developed using multivariate data analysis and logistic regression to examine Christians' television viewing habits regarding reality shows, soap operas, and news. The first model looks at the viewing habits of Christians, the second model examines the viewing habits of Christians attending religious services at least monthly, and the third model analyzes the viewing habits of Christians attending religious services at least monthly and having conservative political views. No significant differences were found in viewing habits between Christians and non-Christians for any of the three models. Although the results of this study cannot be generalized to Christians as a whole, they suggest that Christians in this sample might have adopted secular practices with regard to their television viewing habits.

Abstract:

While spending many hours of vigorous practice, it is possible for trumpet musicians to develop bad habits which inhibit growth and discourage their inspiration. In a trumpet player’s daily life, their constant goal is to sound better in their practice routines than the day before. However, without setting realistic goals and dream goals, reaching a level of perfection can be daunting and many fundamental problems may occur such as lipping, tension, or insufficient air flow. Applying goals to everyday practice is essential for the fundamental and musical development of an aspiring trumpet player. According to Claude Gordon, practice should always be done with a goal in mind, just like constructing a tall building. First you dig the trenches. Next the forms are built. Then the cement is poured followed by the floors, sides and finally the roof. Too many students try putting the roof on before the foundation is built.

By examining the many fundamental problems trumpet players potentially face every day, I will express how to efficiently tackle these obstacles by describing how to install good practice habits while having a desired goal in mind. Second, I will discuss how humans are creatures of habit and how it effects daily practice. Alva Noe describes habits as environmental, in the sense that they are triggered by outside forces and they vanish in the absence of the appropriate environmental setting. In the case of practicing, a novice trumpet player might only practice in preparation for an event, instead of maintaining their skills every day. The methodology of trumpet pedagogy and educational studies will supply evidence-based theories on practice and observation, which will illustrate how habits and goal setting effects trumpet routines. I will also partake in field work by practicing and analyzing different trumpet method books.

Full text
Abstract:
I propose that if we pay proper attention to habits, we can correct distortions in prevailing accounts of action, and make progress in a number of contemporary debates. First I describe the everyday phenomenon of habit, and sketch the context as we find it within contemporary analytic philosophy. I then develop a notion of habit which has its origins in Wittgenstein, Ryle and Aristotie. The generic notion upon which all three thinkers draw is that of a kind of behaviour which is repeated; automatic, in the sense that it does not involve deliberation or trying; and responsible, since it is under the agent's control. I call such behaviour habitual action. Third, I reject the widely held view that the class of rational actions and the class of actions which we perform "for reasons" are equivalent. This view, made popular by Davidson, distorts our conception of rational actions by taking deliberated actions to be the sole paradigm. I suggest that this is an "intellectualist" error, which gives too prominent a place to our deliberative capacity in our picture of rational actions. 1 argue, against this, that on many of the occasions that we act habitually, we do not act for reasons, although we do act rationally, in ways that 1 spell out. Fourth and finally I outline how broadening our conception of rational actions to include many of those we perform habitually allows us to make progress in contemporary debates. I focus on the debate in meta-ethics between Humean (Smith, Blackburn) and anti-Fiumean (McDowell) accounts of moral motivation. I argue that properly understood, habits form a crucial part of the anti-Flumean argument - one which has hitherto been obscure in McDowell. I suggest other debates to which an understanding of habits could contribute, such as the project of "naturalising" rational action.

Abstract:

This dissertation contends that the kinds of consistency composition both affords and demands in order to hold together as a composition have a special location within European and American late modernism. In the decades surrounding the Second World War, artists acknowledged that art needed to let in disorder to reflect lived experience; yet, it still had to cohere in order to be recognizable as art, or a form of presentation. Paying attention to how diverse late modernist artists were thus creatively challenged, I argue that their works of art demonstrate historically located and informed compositional conservatism, or formal rigidity. Making the case for the breadth of composition's organizing force during the period, I focus on a different artist and disciplinary area in each of three chapters: Francis Bacon's oil paintings, Samuel Beckett's dramatic and theatrical work in Endgame, and Ralph Ellison's novelistic efforts in Invisible Man and his unfinished second manuscript.

Late modernist artwork exercises formal control in ways extreme enough to be called violent. But if "violence" signifies here how formal control stringently orders components (and excludes others) to bring them into line with composition's demands, this formal signification hardly removes such violence from having lived consequences. More, such components' failure to fall into line, or the artist's failure to accomplish such organization, can itself have unfortunate repercussions. Building on Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari's art theory, which lays the groundwork for aligning apparently dissimilar compositions, I argue that in Bacon, Beckett, and Ellison, compositional force operates in ways shared by larger physical and psychological arrangements. I show how not just home or domestic spaces, but also national and political structures, including, e.g., those defining German fascism, partake in composition's formational activities. Making use of conceptual apparatuses that extend beyond Deleuzoguattarian theory to include psychoanalysis and Frankfurt School theorists, this dissertation examines how the violence (and pleasure) of form variously subtends the period's configurations.

Abstract:
The motivational value of food is lower during satiety compared to fasting. Dynamic changes in motivational value promote food seeking or meal cessation. In obesity this mechanism might be compromised since obese subjects ingest energy beyond homeostatic needs. Thus, lower adaptation of eating behaviour with respect to changes in motivational value might cause food overconsumption in obesity. To test this hypothesis, we implemented a selective satiation procedure to investigate the relationship between obesity and the size of the behavioural devaluation effect in humans. Lean to obese men (mean age 25.9, range 19–30 years; mean BMI 29.1, range 19.2–45.1 kg/m2) were trained on a free operant paradigm and learned to associate cues with the possibility to win different food rewards by pressing a button. After the initial training phase, one of the rewards was devalued by consumption. Response rates for and wanting of the different rewards were measured pre and post devaluation. Behavioural sensitivity to reward devaluation, measured as the magnitude of difference between pre and post responses, was regressed against BMI. Results indicate that (1) higher BMI compared to lower BMI in men led to an attenuated behavioural adjustment to reward devaluation, and (2) the decrease in motivational value was associated with the decrease in response rate between pre and post. Change in explicitly reported motivational value, however, was not affected by BMI. Thus, we conclude that high BMI in men is associated with lower behavioural adaptation with respect to changes in motivational value of food, possibly resulting in automatic overeating patterns that are hard to control in daily life.

Abstract:
During three decades, the discourse analysis, included in Human and Social Sciences, used methods in common with language teaching (first, second and foreign languages). In this respect, we can observe that President Bourguiba’s great francophony orations, rich with philosophy and humanism, offer a space of thought in line with an ethic dimension that Didactology of Languages and Cultures is trying to discover by its researches. It is already known that after the independence of Tunisia, Bourguiba, as a pioneer and a spirit reformer, deeply contributed to elaborate a symbolic space powerful enough to enable the creation at Niamey, the 20th March 1970, of an institutional francophony with L. S. Senghor and H. Diori. The spearhead of this institution was the A. C. C. T (Agency for cultural and technical Cooperation) in which Bourguiba conceived a concord plan between antiquity and modernity, past and present, East and west. It is this humanist thought aiming for utopia, that this work is trying to render by analysing the main international speeches of President Bourguiba

Schrag, Kylea. "Literacy habits of sixth grade students." Thesis, Wichita State University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10057/2532.

Abstract:
Literacy continues to be important during the secondary school years; however, during middle school motivation to read is known to decline (Hughes-Hassell & Rodge, 2007; Moss & Hendershot, 2007; Pitcher, et al., 2007; National Institute for Literacy, 2007). There is little research on how adolescents spend their free-time and less research regarding types of preferred literacy related activities (Nippold, Duthie, & Larsen, 2005). Less is known about differences in urban or rural communities. The purpose of this study is to determine to what extent sixth graders in an urban and rural public school differ in their preferred types of literacy activities, amount of time spent engaging in literacy activities, and the effect of time spent doing homework on leisure reading. Participants were 78 students from urban and rural sixth grade classes. Data were collected using a multiple choice survey constructed to obtain information about student's freetime activities as they relate to time spent engaging in literacy activities and homework. Results indicated that urban students spent more time reading for fun than the rural students and girls spent more time reading for fun than boys. There was not a significant difference in the amount of time students spent on homework and reading for fun. All students indicated a high preference for magazines. Additionally, urban students preferred comics while rural students preferred non-fiction materials. Also, boys preferred comics and internet articles while girls preferred novels and nonfiction materials.

Abstract:
The purpose of the studies presented was to develop and examine the psychometric properties of the Eating Habits Questionnaire (EHQ). The author designed the 21-item self-report inventory to assess cognitions, behaviors, and feelings related to an extreme focus on healthy eating as a preliminary step in researching an alleged syndrome that has been labeled "orthorexia nervosa", defined as a pathological fixation on healthy eating. Study 1 examined the factor structure of the EHQ and refined the instrument with exploratory factor analysis. A 3-factor solution was preferred, with subscales labeled: knowledge of healthy eating, problems associated with healthy eating, and feeling positively about healthy eating. In the Study 1 sample (n = 174) the subscales displayed good internal consistency (.87 to .91) and test-retest reliability (.74 to .87). Study 2 examined the fit of the 3-factor model in a new sample (n = 213) with confirmatory factor analysis. Poor initial fit became adequate after eliminating poorly fitting items. Internal consistency (.82 to .90) and test-retest reliability (.72 to .81) of the subscales remained good in the Study 2 sample. Examination of correlations between the EHQ subscales and a variety of other measures provided preliminary evidence for both convergent and discriminant validity in the Study 2 sample. As expected, the EHQ subscales correlated more highly with measures of eating related pathology than with measures of general pathology, personality characteristics, or social desirability.

Abstract:
This study aims to examine the factors that influence college students' eating habits and that may impede them from eating how they would prefer to eat by surveying 219 undergraduate college students, looking especially at the impacts of time and money on college students' eating habits. The results show that money does not affect all students equally but disproportionately affects students of lower economic classes. Social class and time constraints make eating healthy difficult for many college students. Students today have busy lives because they are not only students but workers, volunteers, and participants in campus organizations. Prices of food also have lead students to seek out cheaper, often unhealthy food choices. Unfortunately, eating healthy costs more money in our society. While in my study I look at college students these same issues are relevant and visible in a larger society as well.

Abstract:
Previous research has revealed that adolescents have the highest prevalence of unsatisfactory nutritional status and unstructured eating patterns. They also recognized the importance of snacks in the eating habits of this population group. The purpose of this study was to investigate the snacking habits of undergraduate college students, and their correlations with the population’s general eating practices and response to nutrition education. Two hundred eighty four a nutrition course undertook a term project in which they provided information on consumption in the percentage calories provided by protein, fat, carbohydrate and alcohol; their nutrient meals and snacks; and their vitamin/mineral supplement(s) usage toward the beginning of the class. Toward the end of the class, they answered questions on the effect of nutrition education on their eating habits for the overall diet and on vitamin/mineral supplement usage. They also re-ported their frequencies of meals and snacks, their snacks’ food preferences, and responded relationships between snacking perceptions. Correlational statistics were used to identify any significant all the variables. The data analysis revealed that the unstructured eating patterns of college students do not automatically mean unsatisfactory nutritional status and a fondness for just low nutrient dense foods. However, no specific trend could be detected between the snacking perceptions and the consumption practices of college students.

Abstract:
Computer-assisted learning is older than Turing machines, and constantly evolves as technology improves. While some teachers are resistant to using technology in the classroom, “e-learning” techniques are becoming more common in almost every school, from K-12 to universities. As technology becomes more widespread, it becomes crucial to examine the various methodologies of computer-assisted learning and find the techniques that are most effective. This paper explores the effectiveness of one such methodology, spaced repetition. This technique applies to homework assignments available to students online. We include an exploration of several existing apps that use this technique, and introduce our own novel app, Polycommit. Polycommit was developed for use with several Cal Poly classes and was deployed during the first half of the Spring 2017 quarter. With careful attention to user feedback, we created a tool that motivated students to form better study habits. While our results do not show statistically significant improvement to student grades, this tool gives insight into how modern technology and gamification can be leveraged to create an engaging app that encourages positive study habits, and gives us a platform to develop future applications concerning gamification.

Aitken, Nicole. "Differentiating Habits for Pro-Environmental Behaviours." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/32104.

Full text
Abstract:
To help protect the environment people need to change current non-environmental behaviours into more sustainable behaviours. By understanding habits for pro-environmental behaviours, people can strive toward building a more sustainable future. The goal of this thesis was to identify different types of repeated pro-environmental behaviours and how to best foster strong habits for pro-environmental behaviours. To achieve this purpose we combined the theoretical framework of habits (Bargh, 1994; Verplanken, 2006) with the theoretical framework of self-determination theory (SDT; Deci & Ryan, 1985; 2000) to address current gaps in the habit literature. The present thesis is comprised of two articles. The first article determined if the proposed indicators of habits (i.e., behaviour frequency, habit strength, and behaviour interference) could identify different patterns of repeated pro-environmental behaviours predicted by habit and self-determination theory using cluster analysis. The three studies provided support for the three proposed types of repeated behaviours: weak habits, repeated behaviours with interference, and strong habits. These results were very robust since the same pattern was found across three studies, three samples, and three different target behaviours. The second article used the groups (i.e., weak habit, repeated behaviour with interference, and strong habit) in exploratory multinomial logistic regression analyses to identify factors related to pro-environmental behaviours which distinguished between the different types of repeated behaviours. Once again, the same three types of repeated behaviours were found across these three studies, with three new samples and two different target behaviours. Three predictors fairly consistently identified differences between the groups: autonomous motivation toward the environment, perceived importance of the environment, and the frequency of other pro-environmental behaviours. The implications of the thesis findings are discussed in relation to self-determination theory and the study of habits.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The effectiveness of an eight-week nutrition and physical activity intervention at a summer camp to prevent obesity, and promote healthy eating habits and physical activity among children in Kuwait was studied. Two summer camps were recruited for intervention and comparison groups. Convenient sampling was used (N= 79). Pre-test/post-test assessment were used for the participants in the intervention and comparison groups. Modified Healthy Habits Survey (HHS) was used to measure children’s knowledge, behavior and attitude about nutrition, screen time and physical activities, BMI-for age percentile were collected. Statistical analysis included independent t-test, paired t-test, chi-squared test, McNemar's test, and multiple regression. Results indicated that there was a significant increase in nutrition knowledge score (Pp= 0.013, p = 0.007, p = 0.002, and p = 0.012, respectively). There was no significant decrease in the number of servings of unhealthy foods for french-fries and chips, fruit flavored drinks or soft drinks. The only significant decrease in the unhealthy food intake was seen in the number of servings of sweets and candies. Thirty-three-point-three percent of participants in the intervention group decreased their consumption of sweets and candies to 1 time or less per day (P=0.001).
