Full textThis dissertation assumes itself as a personal journal of reflections around research that informs the process of an architectural proposal. The entire process depicts a workflow where the bibliographic sources brief the design decisions, and these guide the search process itself. From this set, an essay for a residential building is born, at Vila do Conde, which seeks to be the catalyst for a new transformation.

This investigation aims to find a new definition to the concept of economic dwelling. This concept arises in the various attempts to tackle the housing deficit that revealed deep throughout Europe, consequence of armed conflicts that marked the twentieth century and the sudden mass movements of the poorest people in search of better living conditions. In order to achieve an objective approach, recourse is made to case examples, through which it is analyzed the topic of housing over the past century. These exemplary cases are organized in housing -in- block and housing -inband. Types of construction usually covered by the concept of affordable housing. In the housing-in-bloc were selected: Mies van der Rohe´s Block Housing in Weissenhof-siedlung (01); Unité d'Habitacion in Marseille, Le Corbusier (02); Robin Hood´s Gardens of Smithson Building (03). For the study of housing-in-band were analyzed: Kiefhoek-siedlung of J.J.P. Oud (04); the Halen-siedlung Atelier 5 (05); and Conjunto Habitacional Quinta da Malagueira, Siza Vieira (06). In order to understand what may be considered new models, flexible and transient samples of the previous cases, with Kazuyo Sejima in Gifu Building (07), and the design of Cité Manifest Lacaton and Vassal (08) were opposed. Following a comparative analysis of all these case examples, it can be perceived that this definition becomes vulnerable to constant social changes, in part at the expense of new paradigms which define the priorities of society, that consequently, affect what each one defines as home.

Full textThis research aims to recognise and characterise modern multifamily housingbuildings in order to promote their safeguard. From a number of representativeexamples of the Modern Movement architecture in Oporto (1948-1961), theanalysis focuses on the flats as private domestic spaces particularly subjected toobsolescence and transformation. In this ensemble, we examine the relationshipbetween the changes necessary to fulfil current domestic requirements and thepreservation of their authenticity. The research comparatively examines the original projects and the existent, based on primary sources with archival research, secondary sources, visits tocase studies and interviews with the owners, residents and architects. Thus, thespace-functional transformations are systematized and the tolerance to changetested. Also, the patrimonial valorisation of this architectural legacy isconsidered through the observation of the main instruments that contribute totheir study, dissemination and conservation, as well as the analysis of the legalconditions concerning urban renovation and built heritage protection. In addition, contemporary interventions in Geneva are examined in case studieswith different levels of patrimonial protection, leading to the identification ofdifferent intervention strategies. The latter represent answers to domesticcomfort needs with different consequences in the preservation of originalelements. The main goal of this research is to identify and characterize interventionstrategies that result from a set of actions analysed in the case studies, and todevelop instrumentation to guide future interventions, thus raising awareness tothe potential and limitations of different degrees of transformation.

Full textThe main objective of this work is to study two multi-familyhousing buildings developed by Santa Casa da Misericórdia do Porto, framing them in the context of the architectural production of the 1960s.The selected case studies - housing complex Campo do Luso (1961-68)and residential complex in Foz (1967) - were built in the same decade, however they are distant regarding to some project themes. The research analyzes the context of multi-family housing in theearly twentieth century, focusing on the specific case of Oporto, and thehistory and patrimony of Santa Casa da Misericórdia do Porto, with specialinterest in housing patrimony. This analysis is based on primary sources, from different institutional archives, and bibliographical sources. Inaddition, an analysis is made of five comparison cases whosecharacteristics contribute to a better framework of the two case studies. The study of the two projects built by Santa Casa da Misericórdiado Porto and the comparison with other examples at national andinternational level will provide a more accurate picture of the new housingmodels that emerged in the 1960s and their contemporaneity. Furthermore,it positions Santa Casa da Misericórdia do Porto in the context of theOporto housing, in particular within the framework of the implementedmodels.
