Abstract:
In the present study, Uludağ University, Faculty of Education, Guidance and Psychological Counseling (GPC) undergraduate program students’ expectations and satisfaction levels regarding the services and facilities provided by the university were investigated in a sample of 354 students (227 females and 127 males). The data collected by the “Student Expectation and Satisfaction Survey of Hacettepe University” were analyzed based on the program type (Daytime and Nighttime Education) and year of study. Findings revealed that the expectation levels of students in all groups were high and satisfaction levels were medium or lower. There was no significant effect on the satisfaction level of the program type and the year of study.

Abstract:
This chapter presents a case study of an online task-enhanced Virtual Exchange (VE) project that involved 19 English students at Hacettepe University, Turkey, and 19 students of English at Sfax University, Tunisia. The objective behind the VE was to provide students with opportunities for intercultural and interactional development through the performance of collaborative intercultural tasks. At the end of the project, students’ performances were assessed and graded, and the project was evaluated by Tunisian students, by means of narratives. The case study concludes with recommendations to be taken into consideration for future VE projects.

The present study was designed to determine the relationship between loneliness and Internet addiction, based on a sample of young generation from Turkey. Participants in this study were students of the Hacettepe University in Ankara, Turkey (n = 440). Findings show that there is a statistically significant relationship (p <0.05) between students' Internet addiction and only the grade they are studying. According to the correlation analysis, it was found that there is a negative relationship between the loneliness of students and the time they spend on the internet, and a positive relationship between internet addiction and age of students. Moreover, it was found that the age, time spent on the Internet and loneliness of university students were important determinants of Internet addiction.

Abstract:
This qualitative study examines the current status of Web 2.0 technologies in Turkey and focuses specifically on the use of such technologies by academics. The main focus of the chapter involves presenting the results of two surveys (using samples of convenience) conducted on faculty members at Hacettepe University (a public research-oriented institution located in Ankara) and Bilkent University (a private research-oriented institution, also located in Ankara). In both universities, the majority of instruction is done in English, and English is the native language or second language of most faculty members. The chapter also examines the applicability of Web 2.0 technologies in the Turkish academic setting and the future implications of these technologies both in Turkey and around the world.

This study’s aim is to find out student’s perspectives on online and face-to-face problem-based learning approaches. The study was conducted at the Department of Computer Education and Instructional Technologies, Faculty of Education, Hacettepe University. Participants were 42 freshman students attending the department during fall of 2006-2007. These students were put into two groups—the online problem-based learning group and the face-to-face problem-based learning group. The research was conducted on Mathematics-I while implementing the topic of ‘derivation’. The content analysis statistical technique is used, as well as a questionnaire consisting of open-ended questions, which perform as a data collection tool to find out the views of the students in context to the process.

Cancheng Guo of Hunan University devised (J. Org. Chem. 2014, 79, 2709) con­ditions for the oxidative cleavage of an alkyne 1 to the esters 2 and 3. Hirokazu Arimoto of Tohoku University found (Chem. Commun. 2014, 50, 2758) that IBX oxidized a primary alcohol 4 to the acid 5 one carbon shorter. David Milstein of the Weizmann Institute of Science uncovered (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2014, 136, 2998) condi­tions for the direct oxidation of the cyclic amine 6 to the lactam 7, with concomitant evolution of H₂. Cyclic ene sulfonamides such as 9 are versatile synthetic intermediates. Henri Doucet of the Université de Rennes reported (Adv. Synth. Catal. 2014, 356, 119) the regioselective conversion of 8 to 9. In this case, the oxidizing agent was the organo-PdBr intermediate. There have been many reports of the functionalization of the oxygenated carbons of cyclic ethers, as exemplified by the conversion of 10 to 11, observed (J. Org. Chem. 2014, 79, 3847) by Jianlin Han of Nanjing University. If these methods were regiose­lective with an acyclic benzyl ether, this could be a new method for the removal of that common protecting group. Jianliang Xiao of the University of Liverpool described (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2014, 136, 8350) a selective benzylic ether oxidation that converted 12 to 13. Baris Temelli of Hacettepe University effected (Synthesis 2014, 46, 1407) the conversion of a primary nitro compound 14 into the corresponding nitrile 15. Jean- Michel Vatèle of Université Lyon 1 oxidized (Synlett 2014, 25, 1275) the primary alcohol 16 to the nitrile 17. Many methods have been put forward for the oxidation of primary alcohols to alde­hydes and secondary alcohols to ketones. Piperidinium oxy radicals such as TEMPO are widely used to catalyze this transformation. Yoshikazu Kimura of Iharanikkei Chemical Industry Co. Ltd. established (Synlett 2014, 25, 596) a manufacturing proc­ess for crystalline NaOCl•5H₂O that served as the bulk oxidant for the conversion of 18 to 19. Neither a ketone nor an aldehyde was chlorinated under the reaction condi­tions. Yoshiharu Iwabuchi of Tohoku University showed (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2014, 53, 3236) that with his piperidinium oxy radical AZADO and Cu catalysis, air could be the bulk oxidant for the otherwise difficult conversion of the amino alcohol 20 to the amino ketone 21.
