Abstract:
Abstract The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility and efficacy of nonmyeloablative allogeneic stem cell transplantation in patients with hematologic malignancies and metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Thirty patients with various pathologies (AML/MDS, n=9; CML, n=5; lymphoid malignancy, n=6; Multiple Myeloma, n=7; RCC, n=3) received a fludarabine (F)-based nonmyeloablative regimen (F+Busulphan, n=5; F+TBI, n=18; F+Cyclophosphamide, n=3; others, n=4), followed by unmanipulated peripheral stem cells from HLA-identical sibling donors. Prophylaxis for graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) consisted of cyclosporine and mycophenolate mofetil. Median age was 43 years (range, 17–62), median time from diagnosis to transplant was 1.6 years (range, 0.4–9.1). Patients underwent a median of 2 prior chemotherapy regimens (range, 0–7). Prior stem cell transplantation failed in seven patients (23%) (autologous, n=6; ablative allogeneic, n=1). Disease phase prior to transplant was complete or partial remission in 16 patients (CR, n=12; PR, n=4) and active disease in 14 patients (Primary refractory, n=1; Relapse, n=10; Untreated, n=3). Recipients were male and donors were female in 15 transplants (50%). The median numbers of mononuclear and CD34+ cells infused were 8.8 x 108/kg (range, 4–26 x 108/kg) and 9.7 x 106/kg (5.2–32.5 x 106/kg) respectively. Neutrophil engraftment achieved after a median of 9 days (range, 6–12) and platelet engraftment occurred after a median of 11 days (range, 9–19). In twelve (40%) patients, absolute netrophil count did not fall below 500/mm3 and 14 patients (47%) required no platelet transfusions. The patients received a median of 2 donor lymphocyte infusions (range, 0–8). Nine patients (30%) had acute GVHD (Grade II-IV, n=5, 17%) and 12 patients (40%) had chronic GVHD (limited, n=4; extensive, n=8, 27%). Three patients (10%) died of nonrelapse treatment-related complications within 100 days post-transplant (Pneumonia, n=2; Bronchoalveolar hemorrhage, n=1). Two patients had graft failure at day 100 post-transplant. Twenty two patients (73.4%) are currently alive with a median follow-up of 6 months. Primary causes of deaths (n=8, 26.6%) are as follows; GVHD (n=3), pneumonia (n=2), bronchoalveolar hemorrhage (n=1), and relapse (n=2). Among 22 evaluable patients, response was obtained in 18 patients (82%) (CR, n=14; PR, n=2; stable disease, n=2) and 4 patients relapsed. Our data suggest that nonmyeloablative allogeneic transplantation is a safe and effective treatment strategy in hematological malignancies.

Abstract:
In today's technological and information rich society, millions of people are using social media as part of online socialisation and virtual life. They create and share contents such as pictures, texts and videos. Social media takes on the role of being the platform in which individuals can freely express themselves. Individuals have the opportunity of networking in the form of creating and sharing content, brainstorming, chatting, and expressing opinions thanks to the reflective and refractive (Medeni and Medeni, 2012) characteristic of social media. But social media which is supposed to provide a space for free expression is subject to different forms of censorship. As a result, social media and censorship have become interwoven terms. According to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, individuals have the right to express their ideas, opinions freely regardless of the types of media used. Even though social media might be controlled in the same way as traditional media, it can be stated that censorship is taking many forms due to the emergence of the intelligence methods with the capability of governments to monitor and counteract social media (Papic and Noonan, 2011). In this study, self-censorship as well as the underlying causes of censorship in social media will be discussed. Censorship and self-censorship which are embedded within each other will be studied from psychological, sociological and linguistic aspects. The study explores the extent of self-censorship in social media using a population comprising of 37 senior students of Department of Information Management, Hacettepe University.

Abstract:
Abstract Adolescent medicine is currently not a certified subspecialty by the Ministry of Health in Turkey. Until recently, no subspecialty education was available for pediatricians interested in pursuing a career in this field. To compensate for the lack of training opportunities in the field, to meet the needs of adolescents and to increase research and strengthen scientific knowledge in the area of adolescent medicine, a doctoral program was established in 2004 by the Division of Adolescent Medicine under the Institute of Child Health at Hacettepe University in Ankara. This paper discusses the opportunities provided by the program, describing the pros and cons of such a course and what the program aims to achieve. This unique program provides pediatricians with extended postgraduate, subspecialty education in adolescent health care. We believe that the adolescent medicine PhD program at Hacettepe University could be a model for educating health care professionals in this field in other countries where there are not established fellowship programs.

Abstract:
In the 21st century, some factors, such as the awareness of multiculturalism, the preservation of local culture and the recognition of national cultural heritage, have led to the need for a new literacy skill called cultural heritage literacy. This study aimed to draw attention to the concept of cultural heritage literacy, defining the competencies of this literacy and investigating these competencies among academics from the humanities and social sciences at Hacettepe University Faculty of Letters, Turkey. Cultural heritage information needs and the information behaviours of academics were found to have differences in practices and perceptions across age, gender, status and subject disciplines. Within the scope of the study, a questionnaire with 30 questions was given to 114 academics from the humanities and social sciences at Hacettepe University Faculty of Letters, Turkey. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics and a chi-square test. The findings show that most of the academics reported having strong cultural heritage literacy abilities. There are statistically significant correlations between participants’ demographic features and cultural heritage literacy. It is expected that this study will contribute to the professionals of cultural heritage institutions. By considering cultural heritage literacy skills, professionals of cultural heritage institutions can develop new information services for cultural-heritage literate people.

Abstract:
AbstractIntrauterine Parvovirus B19 infections may cause fetal anemia, non-immune hydrops fetalis or abortion. This study focuses on the pathogenic role of Parvovirus B19 in non-immune hydrops fetalis at Hacettepe University, a major reference hospital in Turkey. Twenty-two cases of non-immune hydrops fetalis were retrospectively selected out of a total of 431 hydrops fetalis specimens from the Department of Pathology archieves. Paraffine embedded tissue sections from placental and liver tissues from each case were evaluated by histopathology, immunohistochemistry, nested PCR and commercial quantitative Real-time PCR. Viral DNA was detected in placental tissues by Real-time PCR in 2 cases (2/22, 9.1%) where histopathology also revealed changes suggestive of Parvovirus B19 infection. No significant histopathologic changes were observed for the remaining sections. Nested PCR that targets the VP1 region of the viral genome and immunohistochemistry for viral capsid antigens were negative for all cases. As a result, Parvovirus B19 is identified as the etiologic agent for the development of non-immune hydrops fetalis for 9.1% of the cases in Hacettepe University, Turkey. Real-time PCR is observed to be an effective diagnostic tool for nucleic acid detection from paraffine embedded tissues. Part of this study was presented as a poster at XIIIth International Congress of Virology, San Francisco, USA (Abstract V-572).

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to compare the levels of forgiveness, tolerance and happiness of university students in terms of different variables (gender, age, marital status and program) in Turkey and Iran. A total of 1234 (797 female and 437 male) university students, between 18 and 23 years old, who were studying at Hacettepe University and Ondokuz Mayıs University in Turkey and Tehran University and Tabriz University in Iran, participated in the study. They completed three data collection instruments: the Oxford Happiness Scale (OMO), Tolerance Scale (TO) and Heartland Forgiveness Scale (HFS). The analysis of the data was performed with the SPSS 23 statistical program. The results of the statistical analyses showed that the happiness and tolerance levels of university students in Turkey and Iran differ according to gender, age, marital status and educational status variables. However, when the same variables were considered, there was no significant difference in forgiveness levels. Finally, the findings were discussed in reference to previous studies.

Abstract:
The relationship between the evaluation of Turkish university students of their family problems and their age, gender and identity status was studied. The study group was composed of 291 students from Hacettepe University. The results of the study showed that there is a direct relation between gender and Identity Foreclosure and Moratorium, and between age and identity status. Depending on the evaluation of insensitivity and inconsistency within the family, the Identity Achievement scores of the students decrease, however, the scores of Moratorium and Identity Diffusion increase. An increase in the evaluation of health and economic problems within the family seems to be related to a decrease in Moratorium scores, and the evaluation of a disorganized family and incompatible parents seems to be related to a decrease in the scores of Identity Foreclosure.

Abstract:
Objective: Since 1991, carbapenem resistance is being reported in an increasing fashion worldwide. It is expected to increase due to increasing frequency of international travels. Carbapenem resistant Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae can cause colonization or clinical infection. Treatment of carbapenem resistant Escherichia coli or Klebsiella pneumoniae is not precise and we have limited choices of antibiotics. This brings increasing morbidity and mortality with itself. We aimed to find out risk factors for colonization or infection with carbapenem resistant Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae in this study. Materials and Methods: With the decision of Adult Hospital Infection Control Comittee, a surveillance has been started among adult patients (>18 years of age) at Hacettepe University Hospitals at June 2009. A perianal swab culture has been obtained weekly by Adult Hospital Infection Control nurses from patients included in surveillance program. In this study, carried on adult patients hospitalized at Hacettepe University hospitals between 01.06.2009-31.12.2010, risk factors for colonization or infection with carbapenem resistant Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae, those are detected via surveillance cultures or clinical specimens, were investigated. Results: According to results of the multivariate analysis of the study; being hospitalized in an internal ward (any ward other than a surgical ward) (p=0,005), Diabetes Mellitus (p=0,010), immunosuppression (p<0,001), hospitalization history (p<0,005), burn history (p=0,026), central venous line history (p=0,012), arterial line history (p=0,010), feeding or nasogastric tube history (p<0,001), sulbactam/ampicillin use (p<0,001), glycopeptide use (p=0,003) and carbapenem or piperacillin/tazobactam use (p<0,001) were all detected to be risk factors.
