Abstract:
Hadiths play a pivotal role in shaping norms and laws for the Muslim community in Islam, but they often give rise to controversies and differences in interpretation and application. This article aims to explore the phenomenon of Ikhtilaf Al-Hadith, which refers to the divergence in the understanding of Hadiths among Islamic scholars and its methods of resolution. Employing a literature analysis method, the author references pertinent sources for this study. The findings reveal that Ikhtilaf Al-Hadith can emerge due to various factors, including the content of the Hadith, the context of its delivery, methodology, and ideology. Resolution approaches include compromise, tarjih (selecting the stronger Hadith), or nasakh (abrogation of one Hadith in favor of another). Hence, a meticulous understanding and methodological approach are essential to maintain consistency in comprehending and applying Hadiths in Islam. Compromise, tarjih, and nasakh serve as methods for resolving discrepancies between Hadiths, and contextual and historical understanding is crucial in interpreting apparently contradictory Hadiths.

Abstract:
Historians rely on hadiths (narratives about Muhammad) as a source for writing the history of early Islam. Each hadith is preceded by an isnād, which is a list of names purporting to give the sequence of individuals who transmitted it. Scholars apply a variety of methods to the isnāds of hadiths in order to determine their dates and geographic origins. These methods presuppose the absence of inadvertent mistakes in the names cited. Because the hadith literature is so voluminous and unwieldy, the systematic discovery and correction of these mistakes using manual methods is unfeasible. We introduce new computational and statistical methods for automatically detecting a subset of these errors and correcting them. We do so by investigating the citations of sources in the isnāds documented in the digital hadith repository, Gawāmiʿ al-Kalim.

Second, this book's method of narrating the hadith is the simā' method. The hadith used comes from the hadith expert priests. Third, in explaining the meaning of amṡāl, the author quotes the opinion of 'ulama and Arabic poetry. Fourth, the book's strengths are the explanation from the author regarding the purpose of the amṡāl in hadith. As for the weakness of the book, the author ignores the quality of the hadith, so there is no information whether the hadith is ṣahīh, ḥasan, or ḍa'īf.

Abstract:
Hadith is the second source of reference for Islamic law after the Qur'an, which explains the sentences in the Qur'an which are still global by referring to the provisions of the Prophet Muhammad SAW. Classification of text documents can also be used to overcome the problem of interrelation between the Qur'an and hadith. The problem of interrelation between books of hadith needs to be done because some hadiths in certain hadith books have the same meaning as other hadith books. This study aims to analyze the development of text representation and classification methods suitable to overcome similarity meaning problems in detecting interrelationships between hadith books. The research method used is Systematic Literature Review (SLR) sourced from Google Scholar, Science Direct, and IEEE. There are 42 pieces of literature that have been studied successfully. The results showed that contextual embedding as the newest text representation method considered word context and sentence meaning better than static embedding. As a classification method, the ensemble method has better performance in classifying text documents than using only a single classifier model. Thus, future research can consider using a combination of contextual embedding and ensemble methods to detect interrelationships between books of hadith.

The writing of hadith in this cross-stream perspective historical review is the result of literature research, which is a method obtained by collecting data and information sourced from literature. The process involves a series of procedures for collecting data from library sources which are then processed from various stages of analysis, and ultimately produce research findings. The characteristics of the Hadith of the Prophet's period of Revelation revealed by Allah were explained by the Prophet through his words, deeds, and taqrir. Characteristics of the Hadith period Muslim companions can directly obtain hadith from the Prophet as a source of hadith. The characteristics of hadiths from the tabi period were collected and discarded through talaqqi with the companions then they recorded what was gained from the meeting. Characteristics of Hadith period Tabi' at-Tabi'in Group existing hadiths according to the field of discussion. Three elements must be met in order to be called a hadith narrative. The three elements are (1) the activity of receiving hadith (al-tahammul), (2) the re-delivery of hadith, and (al-ada') (3) the mention of a series of narrators at the time of the hadith (al-isnad). The history of the development of hadith is a period or period that has been passed by hadith since the moment of its birth and grew in the introduction, appreciation, and practice of the ummah from generation to generation.

Educators are the best curriculum for applying knowledge, culture, and science. As for realizing all these goals, it is necessary to have the right idea. From that, the ideas conveyed by Nadiem Makarim the Indonesian Minister of Education, will be correlated in the hadith perspective. This idea can be drawn from five important points, namely, class discussion, the role of students in teaching and learning activities, fostering the social spirit of students, discovering student’s identities, cooperation between teachers and students. Where these ideas have been conveyed indirectly through the hadiths, which are, part of the Prophet is learning. Hadiths found through literature study are the Kitab Syarah Bukhari, Fathul Baari, Sahih Muslim, and journals. The method used in this Takhrij al-Hadith is a qualitative study with the sanad criticism approach to determine the authenticity of a hadisth. In the sanad criticism method, the writer uses the Lidwa Pustaka i-software assistance method. Hadith found with the bil ma’na redaction method. So that there are 4 hadiths in the study. The first hadith in Shohih Bukhari no. 5514 regarding the method of question and answer the Prophet. Second, in Shohih Bukhori no. 77 about the virtue of konwledge and teaching. Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the study and analysis of three main issues: 1. The role of the Qur'an in the establishment of the Sunnah, and the affirmation of its status and the importance of acting in accordance with it. 2. The role of the Prophet in the propagation and preservation of the Sunnah. 3. The main evidence that is cited by Goldziher in support of his theory of the fabrication of Hadlth during the Umayyad period. The thesis consists of an introduction, two parts and a conclusion. The introduction describes the motivation for choosing the above issues as the subject of the research and demonstrates the method followed. Part One deals with the role of the Qur'an and the Prophet in relation to the Sunnah and contains two chapters. In Chapter 1, attention is given to two issues: The clarification of the Qur'än's urgent requirement for the Sunnah from the revelation of the first verses onwards; and an examination of the Qur'än's detailed explanation of the importance of the Sunnah and of acting according to it. This chapter consists of six sections and a conclusion. Chapter 2 aims to present and discuss the various roles that were performed by the Prophet in the preservation and propagation of his Sunnah. This chapter consists of eight sections and a conclusion. Part Two, which constitutes the main part of the study, undertakes a rigorous study of Goldziher's main evidence regarding his theory of the fabrication of Hadith during the Umayyad period. It consists of an introduction, five chapters and a conclusion. In the introduction, we give a general overview of Goldziher's theory regarding the fabrication of Hadith in the Umayyad period. Chapter 3 contains an analysis of the evidence he cites in support of his claim that the Companions fabricated Iladith, and consists of five sections. Chapter 4 attempts an analysis of the evidence he cites in support of his claim that various `pious scholars' fabricated Hadith during the Umayyads' rule, and consists of seven sections. Chapter 5 contains an analysis of his evidence regarding the Umayyads' fabrication of Hadith, and consists of five sections. Chapter 6 contains an analysis of his evidence regarding the fabrication of Hadith by various theologians and consists of four sections. Chapter 7 contains a demonstration of the impact of Goldziher's opinions on subsequent studies. Finally, the Conclusion summarises the findings of the study.

Saad, Salma. "The legal and social status of women in the Hadith literature." Thesis, University of Leeds, 1990. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/508/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis covers the status of, and attitude to, the woman in Islam, as reflected by the literature of the Hadith. All previous works which have dealt with the status of the woman in Islam have attempted to cover vast areas and aspect ranging from the pre-Islamic era to our present time. However, no single work has ever been devoted to the position of woman as depicted in Muslim tradition. Since the amount of material collected is so vast, it seems to the author that even a general survey of the status of woman from pre-Isalmic times to our present day, is beyond the scope of this research, especially that this subject has already been discussed by many scholars. The literature of the hadith, however, has never been the sole corpus for this subject and hence is the major source for the present research. The status of women is examined in this work following the different "stages" in the life of the woman. Hence the following aspects have been considered; a. the baby girl b. the young girl c. the married woman and the mother d. the divorced woman e. the widow f. the slave woman. The six major books of Hadiths, and the books of Sunni, contain an enormous number of references to woman noted by the Prophet and his companions. These references usually refer to the status and legal position of women from birth to death, mainly based on actual facts which were brought to the attention of the Prophet. In order to collect all the relevant references; all six books of the Hadith, were carefully examined, registered and classified. In addition, all relevant works available were read so that a sound background for the research can be established. Experts in the field of Islamic law were consulted on various aspect of this topic and were also to lesser extent relied on traditions and customs known to the author and her family. Having dealt with a most sensitive subject which has been neglected up till now. The author aware of the incompleteness of this work, nevertheless, the author feel that the amount of materials examined and methods of analysis which were employed should give the reader on authentic insight into the life and position of the Muslim woman as depicted in the Hadith.

Yarrington, Matthew D. "Lived Islam in Bangladesh : contemporary religious discourse between Ahl-i-Hadith, 'Hanafis' and authoritative texts, with special reference to al-barzakh." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/5690.

Full text
Abstract:
Contemporary north-west Bangladesh is the scene of a religious contest between the self-described 'Hanafis‘, who include various expressions of Islamic faith and practice, and Salafi reformist groups known as Ahl-i-Hadith. Occasionally labelled 'Wahhabis‘ due to their affinity with the doctrine from Arabia, the Ahl-i-Hadith actively seek to purify local Islam of all practices which they consider to be bidaʿ. Local Hanafi Muslims, who form a majority, are resistant to these efforts at total religious reform. This thesis investigates the contemporary discourse taking place between these two communities in Rajshahi, Bangladesh, and between these groups and their authoritative Islamic texts. The case study used to focus on inter-group debates is the contested issue of whether or not to perform rituals meant to assist the dead during al-barzakh – the conscious waiting period in the grave believed to last from death until the day of resurrection. Especially during a soul‘s first forty days in al-barzakh, the Hanafi community observes rituals intended to reduce the torment of the grave and send soʾab, or merit, to the account of the deceased. Participant observation at numerous milad, chollisha and khotom ceremonies for the dead, as well as interviews with local ʿulamaʾ and other informants highlight the progress of Ahl-i-Hadith reform efforts, but also the way in which Hanafi leaders defend and interpret their 'unorthodox‘ practices using authoritative Sunni hadith and Qurʾanic passages. Additional Islamic texts which are locally influential are examined. Special voice is given to "what Muslims say" in an attempt to let the words and actions of those involved in the debates direct the research agenda as they interpret and defend their respective positions. This thesis provides other researchers with a field-based account of contemporary Islamic belief and practice in Bangladesh – an understudied Islamic context containing over 150 million people. Dozens of quotations from ʿulamaʾ are reproduced in the original Bengali and in English. Additionally, this study complicates Islamic fundamentalist and Western scholarly conceptions of 'popular Islam‘ and 'syncretism‘ by showing that Hanafi ʿulamaʾ in Rajshahi explain their (contested) beliefs and activities in Islamic terms, using universally recognised Sunni sources of authority, especially the hadith literature.

Khair, Nur Saadah Binti. "Anti-woman discourse in the Hadith literature : an analytical study of debates in literary works of feminists and fundamentalists." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2018. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/8768/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study analyses interpretations of Hadiths among selected feminists and fundamentalists, in which they have different views on the meaning of the texts of Hadiths concerning women. The feminists argue that the Hadith literature contain misogynistic and anti-women reports. This debate has gradually developed in the nineteenth century and the issues continuously disputed until the present day. However, the debate receives different reactions from the fundamentalists who believe that Hadiths contain equal treatment to both men and women. Therefore, the present study seeks firstly to investigate which Hadiths that have caught the attention of both feminists and fundamentalists, and to identify the features of those Hadiths that have been claimed as anti-women. Secondly, to examine and compare various approaches applied by both feminists and fundamentalists in comprehending Hadiths concerning women by examining their strength and weakness. Finally, this study aims to develop a means of utilising the findings to tum the debates between feminists and fundamentalists into something constructive in the interpretation of Hadith. The study is qualitative in nature, by applying textual analysis on literary works written by selected women figures from the feminists and fundamentalists. The study in its findings argues that both feminists and fundamentalist have their own interpretative approach towards the Hadith, but both have similar objective in protecting women's rights. It recommends that future research on the Hadiths concerning women inquire further into said problems and limitations, in order to produce fair and better understanding of the Prophetic texts that can contribute to the contemporary gender discourse.

Abstract:
This thesis analyses the eschatological productions, both Christian and Muslim, written in the two centuries after the birth of Islam. In works such as the Syriac apocalypses of Pseudo-Methodius and Pseudo-Ezra the sudden expansion of Muslim troops was mainly perceived by Eastern Christians as an apocalyptic trial, a sign of the End of Time. On the Muslim side, the main eschatological a collection, is the Kitab al-Fitan by Nu'aym b. Hammd (d. 843) shows the existence of a vital apocalyptic production which rose in correspondence to times of internal and external strife. This work wishes to survey some of the main themes common to both of these eschatological productions (such as the depiction of the enemy, the development of messianic figures, the role of Jerusalem in the end-time, etc.); the use of a comparative perspective bears a fundamental theoretical contribution, by highlighting the presence of direct references between the different traditions, but also by underlining the common processes of eschatological production and development. Some final remarks deal with the contemporary use of these traditions, made by both Muslim and Christian fundamentalists, who look for a prophesied roadmap to read the current world events.

Abstract:
In this thesis we aim to study what defines the sacredness in a comparative and interdisciplinary perspective as it manifests itself by a bilingual corpus. We had resorted to both literary and exegetical theories. Through this study of intertext of Qur’ân and Hadith in the tunisian literature which uses french and arabic-language we had emphasized the importance of three major dimensions in interextuality that contribute fully to devise the poetry in the « sacredness » : mystic, rhythmics and myth. Our thesis deconstructs preconceived ideas that keep the separation between the literature and sacredness by showing the importance of reviewing the sacred texts beyond doubt. The Authors seem to have intuitively deconstruct many myths of the « unthinkable » islamic thought. What they brought has considerable merit while Islam is becoming known more by its myths than by the essence of its texts

Abstract:
From the point of view of literary qualities, Prophetic Traditions stand out among Arabic literature. This study aims at selecting some unique words the Prophet used, and search for their presence or absence in the Arabic Although several sources were used, the reliance for the choice of words is mainly on An-Nihayah fi gharib al-Athar of Ibn al-Athir; and for comparison, several published works. literature. The objective is to find out how the Prophetic words affected the literature. An analysis is attempted to arrive at the meaning of these words as used in Hadith literature, literatures preceding or following it, and compare to find whether they have been used at all, and, if used, in the same meaning or not, or whether they are used in a unique sense. Thus, this study brings to light differences between Prophetic literature, and literatures other than it.

Abstract:
AbstractWomen were an important source of hadith, most notably Aisha, the Prophet’s wife. Female scholars of hadith and other Islamic “sciences” were aplenty and were well-respected for at least nine centuries. They travelled widely and held public lectures to students of mixed gender who would also travel far to hear them. But references to women scholars gradually began to disappear from the literature from the sixteenth century on.

Abstract:
AbstractIn the Qur’anic account, human beings are God’s representatives on earth, His viceroys (aka caliphs). Men and women are explicitly entrusted with being each other’s protectors, or walis, and with building up their societies. Yet despite these Qur’anic prescriptions of a male-female partnership, the idea of men as “guardians” of women managed to take root and persists to this day in many places, making men the gateway to women’s education, professional life, social life, marriage—their very existence. How is this possible? Because two verses, 4:34 and 2:228, have traditionally been (mis)interpreted so as to completely overturn the Qur’anic message of equality and partnership, and to place men in charge, despite the historical record from Muhammad’s life as recorded in none other than the hadith literature, and from medieval times.

Abstract:
The Qurʾan itself refers to a call to prayer (although using another term, nidāʾ, not adhān) without laying down a form. Several stories are told of how the call to prayer was originally formulated. Some describe fire, horns, and even semantrons as alternative means suggested or even tried at the earliest stage. Maroussia Bednarkiewicz traces variant wordings to different stages in history, regional centres, traditionists, and jurisprudents. Changes over time suggest that verbatim transmission was a low priority, yet an original core story can be discerned.

Abstract:
In this chapter, the author discusses the second part of Muhammad al-Muwaylihi's Hadith ʻIsa Ibn Hisham, the ‘second journey’ (Al-Rihla al-thaniya). The author published his Oxford DPhil thesis of 1968, a translation and commentary on Hadith ʻIsa Ibn Hisham, in book form upon the suggestion of Mustafa Badawi. It appeared in 1992 as A Period of Time (Fatra min al-zaman). Later in the 1990s another Egyptian scholar, Gaber Asfour, requested the author to prepare for publication the complete works of Muhammad al-Muwaylihis and his father Ibrahim. These also appeared in Cairo in 2002 and 2007 respectively. The author first provides a background on al-Muwaylihi's ‘first journey’ in Hadith ʻIsa Ibn Hisham before turning to Al-Rihla al-thaniya, al-Muwaylihi's account of his visit to Paris.

Afsaruddin, Asma. "STRIVING IN THE PATH OF GOD: FETHULLAH GÜLEN’S VIEWS ON JIHAD." In Muslim World in Transition: Contributions of the Gülen Movement. Leeds Metropolitan University Press, 2007. http://dx.doi.org/10.55207/vvrp6737.

Full text
Abstract:
Jihad (‘struggle’, ‘striving’) in the Qur’an and Sunnah is a term with multiple inflections. The reiterated Qur’anic phrase al-jihad fi sabil Allah (‘striving in the path of God’) allows for that striving to be accomplished in myriad ways. After surveying a range of exegeses of relevant Qur’anic verses and early hadith works, the paper shows how fully Fethullah Gülen’s empha- sis on jihad as a means of personal, moral, spiritual and social renewal and transformation is in line with the earliest meanings found in exegetical and hadith works. Such a traditional, historical understanding runs counter to recent, polemical assertions that jihad is a monova- lent term requiring unremitting armed combat against non-Muslims. The paper demonstrates that contemporary Muslim thinkers like Gülen, who offer a more expansive and multi-facet- ed reading of what it means to ‘strive in the path of God’, are harking back to earlier, and thus more historically authentic, understandings of jihad and its moral purview. The Arabic term jihad has primarily come to mean “armed struggle/combat” and is frequently translated into English as “holy war.” And yet a close scrutiny of the occurrence of this term in the Qur’an and early hadith literature in particular demonstrates that this exclusive under- standing of the term cannot be supported for the formative period of Islam. In the Qur’an the phrase “fi sabil Allah,” meaning “in the path of God” or “for the sake of God,” is frequently conjoined to al-jihad. The full Arabic expression “al-jihad fi sabil Allah” means “striving/ struggling in the path of God” in the broadest sense. In the supporting hadith and exegetical literature, this human struggle for the noblest purpose – that is, to win God’s approval– is manifested in multiple ways. This paper will discuss the multiple meanings of jihad as evident in the Qur’an, exegeses, and hadith literature, particularly from the early period. After having established the broad range of meanings assigned to jihad in these sources, I will then proceed to discuss Fethullah Gülen’s understanding of jihad and its relevance for contemporary Muslims. It will be argued that his understanding of jihad replicates the polyvalence of this term in Qur’an and hadith literature and that his emphasis on both its spiritual and physical dimensions is timely and relevant today, especially in the wake of the appropriation of this term as a relentlessly mili- tant activity by contemporary extremist groups.
