Abstract:

The aim of the present study is to present the composition of the leech fauna from Lithuania. Based on morphology, 12 species of leeches belonging to 10 genera and 5 families (Haemopidae, Hirudinidae, Glossiphoniidae, Erpodellidae and Piscicolidae) were identified in the country. Comparison of the data generated in current study with historical records, we extend the list of species to 21. Additional localities of Hirudo medicinalis and Erpobdella monostriata, two uncommon leeches, were established in Lithuania.

In this study, two new species of Helobdella leeches, Helobdella octatestisaca n. sp. and Helobdella melananus n. sp., and a newly recorded species, Helobdella europaea, are reported. The geographic range of Haemopis lateromaculata Mathers 1963 (Hirudinea: Haemopidae) is extended across North America. Dal Lake supports a diverse group of fauna, including fishes, aquatic birds, zooplankton, and macrobenthic invertebrates. The knowledge about records of leeches (Hirudinea) in Baltic brackish waters of north-east Germany (Mecklenburg-West Pomerania) will be summarized. Observations were made from estuaries of rivers (Stepenitz and Warnow) and lagoons (Darss-Zingst, Stettin) as well in Baltic offshore waters (especially at the Adlergrund/Rønnebank).
